Concurrent vaccination of goats with foot and mouth disease (FMD) and peste des petits ruminants (PPR) booster vaccines.

Foot and mouth disease (FMD) remains subclinical and self-limiting in small ruminants, but risk of spread of infection to susceptible cohorts is of great epidemiological significance; therefore, small ruminants must be included in vaccination campaigns in FMD endemic regions. Three groups of goats already immunized against peste des petits ruminants (PPR) were vaccinated with FMD and PPR vaccines alone or concurrently. The specific antibody response against three FMD virus strains and PPR virus were evaluated by competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA). Goats concurrently vaccina

Immune response against lumpy skin disease after simultaneous vaccination of cattle with sheep pox and goat pox and foot and mouth disease vaccines.

Foot and mouth disease (FMD) and Lumpy skin disease (LSD) are contagious viral diseases that cause significant economic damage in the livestock industry of countries. Cattle are vaccinated two times a year with FMD and sheep pox and goat pox vaccines (SGP) within 30-day intervals to combat both diseases in Türkiye. However, vaccinations in different periods increase vaccination costs, labor, and distress on animals. Therefore, it was aimed to determine the effects of simultaneous vaccination of FMD and SGP vaccines on the immunity against LSD and FMD in cattle. For this purpose, animals were d

Seroprevalence of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease Virus in Cattle, Sheep, and Goats in New York State From 2022 Through 2025.

Epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) virus (EHDV) is a vector-borne virus transmitted by Culicoides midges that infects domestic and wild ruminants. EHDV causes high mortality in white-tailed deer (WTD) and oral lesions mimicking foot and mouth disease (FMD) in cattle. Small ruminants (e.g., domestic sheep, domestic goats) seroconvert but do not typically develop disease. In 2021, ~2100 WTD deaths were attributed to EHD in New York (NY) State. That same year, an EHD outbreak at a NY dairy resulted in a foreign animal disease (FAD) investigation to rule out FMD, and EHDV was detected in a captiv

Toxin genotypes and antimicrobial resistance profiles of Clostridium perfringens isolated from healthy and diseased goats in Jiangsu Province, China.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Clostridium perfringens is a major enteric pathogen of goats, capable of producing multiple toxins and harboring diverse antimicrobial resistance (AMR) determinants. The coexistence of toxin diversity and AMR complicates disease control and poses risks to animal health and antimicrobial stewardship. This study aimed to characterize toxin genotypes, phenotypic AMR patterns, and associated resistance genes in C. perfringens isolates obtained from healthy, diseased, and deceased goats in Jiangsu Province, China. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 404 samples were collected fro

Deployment of a herd health package increases production traits and reduces parasite load and disease incidence in sheep and goats in Mali.

Small ruminant production plays a crucial role in rural livelihoods and food security in Mali but is constrained by infectious diseases, parasitic infections, poor nutrition, and limited preventive healthcare. This study evaluated the effect of implementing a herd health package on the productivity, parasite load, and disease incidence in small ruminant herds in the Farakala commune, Sikasso region, Mali. This package included regular, targeted deworming campaigns, vaccination against Peste des Petits Ruminants, and training for livestock farmers on best practices regarding feeding, hygiene, h

A low-carbon high inulin diet improves intestinal mucosal barrier function and immunity against infectious diseases in goats.

INTRODUCTION: Abrupt weaning is a major stressful event, contributing to intestinal abnormalities and immune system dysfunction in weaned kids. Inulin is a prebiotic fiber with many positive functions, including promoting intestinal fermentation and enhancing host immunity in monogastric animals. However, the effects of a high-inulin, energy-rich diet on ruminal fermentation characteristics, methane emission, growth performance, and immune systems of weaned kids have not been investigated. METHODS: A fully automated in vitro fermentation system was used to investigate ruminal fermentation cha

High prevalence of scrapie in a dairy goat herd: tissue distribution of disease-associated PrP and effect of PRNP genotype and age.

Following a severe outbreak of clinical scrapie in 2006-2007, a large dairy goat herd was culled and 200 animals were selected for post-mortem examinations in order to ascertain the prevalence of infection, the effect of age, breed and PRNP genotype on the susceptibility to scrapie, the tissue distribution of diseaseassociated PrP (PrP(d)), and the comparative efficiency of different diagnostic methods. As determined by immunohistochemical (IHC) examinations with Bar224 PrP antibody, the prevalence of preclinical infection was very high (72/200; 36.0%), with most infected animals being positiv

Infection by Trypanosoma vivax in goats and sheep in the Brazilian semiarid region: from acute disease outbreak to chronic cryptic infection.

A study was undertaken to investigate the role of Trypanosoma vivax in sheep and goat mortality and abortions in the Brazilian semiarid region, where outbreaks had been previously reported in bovines. For this purpose, 177 goats and 248 sheep (20% of herds) were randomly sampled on four farms in the State of Paraiba in May and October 2008. The animals were screened for trypanosomes by the buffy coat technique (BCT) and PCR. Infected animals, approximately 25% in both surveys, manifested apathy, pale mucous membranes, enlarged lymph nodes, weakness, weight loss, opacity of the cornea, blindnes

Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) virus serological surveillance in goats in Lao PDR: Issues for disease eradication in a low-resource disease-free setting.

Peste des Petits ruminants (PPR) is an economically important transboundary viral disease of goats. This study aimed to determine a baseline of serological evidence for Peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) in Lao goats. A total of 1,072 serum samples were collected by convenience sampling across five provinces in Laos and tested for antibody response to PPRV using a commercially available competitive ELISA. Positive antibody responses were found in 2.2% (95% CI 1.4, 3.2) of the samples. True prevalence calculations indicated a total overall sample prevalence of 1.7% (95% CI 0.9, 2.8). The h

Post-vaccination serological status predicts protection against heterologous SAT1 foot-and-mouth disease virus challenge in goats.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a contagious transboundary animal disease of many cloven-hooved livestock and wildlife species readily transmitted by multiple routes of infection. Goats are susceptible to FMD and have been implicated in previous FMD outbreaks, but limited data are available for this species. The objective of the current study was to estimate the vaccinal antibody titer at the time of exposure that would protect goats from developing FMD lesions after experimental infection with a heterologous Southern African Territories 1 (SAT1) FMD virus (FMDV). Forty FMD-free goats were obt

Evaluation of antibody titer and associated risk factors of goat pox vaccine against lumpy skin disease in crossbred buffaloes.

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is an infectious disease affecting large ruminants, caused by the lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV). It is characterized by symptoms such as hyperthermia, emaciation, lymphadenopathy, and skin nodules. Pregnant animals affected by LSD often experience abortions and may develop infertility syndrome, while affected males can become sterile. A live attenuated goat pox virus vaccine (GTPV) was administered to various groups of crossbred buffaloes. After vaccination, blood samples were collected from each group to analyze post-vaccination antibody titers. Additionally, vaccin

A review of coxiellosis (Q fever) and brucellosis in goats and humans: Implications for disease control in smallholder farming systems in Southeast Asia.

Coxiella burnetii and Brucella spp. are pathogenic bacteria that can cause large-scale outbreaks in livestock. Furthermore, these infectious agents are capable of causing zoonotic infections and therefore pose a risk to the close relationship between farm households and their livestock, especially goats. A review of seroprevalence studies of Coxiella burnetii and Brucella spp. in domestic goats demonstrated large differences in the total number of samples tested in different regions and countries. This review aims to provide information on coxiellosis (Q fever in humans) and brucellosis in goa

[Proposal of the DVG Specialist Group "Diseases of Small Ruminants and New World Camelids" for a program to combat Maedi-Visna infection in sheep herds and caprine arthritis-encephalitis infection in goat herds].

ABSTRACT: The control of small ruminant lentivirus (SRLV) infections - Maedi, Visna, and caprine arthritis and encephalitis (CAE) - is based on the establishment of SRLV-free closed herds, achieved by serologically testing of all small ruminants aged one year and older for antibodies against SRLV. After four completely negative serological test results within a period of at least 24 months, a farm is recognized as SRLV-free. Maintaining SRLV-free status is based on regular serological testing of all small ruminants in the herd over one year of age. To reduce the administrative and financial bu

Genetic Evolutionary Analysis of Lumpy Skin Disease Virus Strain Under Immune Pressure Exerted by Heterologous Goat Poxvirus Vaccines.

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is an important infectious disease that threatens the global cattle industry. Recently, LSD has occurred frequently in Asia. The attenuated goat poxvirus (GTPV) vaccine is widely used to prevent LSD in cattle in China; however, sporadic cases of LSD still occur in immunized cattle. This study aimed to investigate the genetic evolution of isolated LSD virus (LSDV) strain under GTPV heterologous vaccine immune pressure. We isolated a new strain of LSDV, named LSDV/China/SX/2023, from a cattle herd immunized with a GTPV-attenuated vaccine in Shaanxi Province, Northwest Ch

Mucopolysaccharidosis IIID and Beta-Mannosidosis in Brazilian Anglo-Nubian Goats: Molecular and Genealogical Insights for the Development and Implementation of a Genetic Disease Eradication Program.

Beta mannosidosis and Mucopolysaccharidosis IIID are two autosomal recessive lysosomal storage diseases identified in Anglo-Nubian goats. Even though they are well characterized from the clinical and molecular point of view, there is a gap in studies aiming to understand distribution and dissemination risk in goat populations throughout the world. Considering this, we developed probe-based qPCR tests and combined it with pedigree analysis to deepen the knowledge related to the distribution of both mutations in Brazilian Anglo-Nubian population. This study revealed, for the first time, that the
