CD1d+ Goblet Cells Expand Colon-Resident Immature, Intermediate and Differentiated iNKT Cells to Limit Colitis.

Invariant Natural Killer T (iNKT) cells recognize glycolipid antigens presented on CD1d and rapidily respond to direct immune responses. iNKT cells develop in the thymus and migrate to peripheral tissues in what has been presumed to be differentiated/committed states. Accordingly, colonic iNKT cells are established in early life, considered to remain 'fixed' post-weaning, and determine life-long colitis susceptibility. Using single cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), we demonstrate that humans and mice contain colonic iNKT populations transcriptionally resembling immature and intermediate thymic

Goblet cells, enterochromaffin cells, superficial gastric-type epithelium and antral-type glands in the gallbladder.

From a material derived from routine investigations, 40 gallbladder specimens were selected in which metaplastic cells had been observed. All the cholecystectomies were performed for gallstones. Of the patients 6 were male and 34 female. The mean age was 51.2 years. 36 specimens revealed goblet cells, enterochromaffin cells were found in 22, antral-type (pseudopyloric) glands in 23 and islands of gastric surface epithelium in 15 specimens. Histochemical methods to visualize sulphated, non-sulphated acid and neutral mucins were used. Ordinary gallbladder epithelium showed a predominance of sulp

The protective role of conjunctival goblet cell mucin sialylation.

Gel-forming mucins secreted by conjunctival goblet cells have been implicated in the clearance of allergens, pathogens, and debris. However, their roles remain incompletely understood. Here we show that human and mouse conjunctival goblet cell mucins have Alcian blue-detectable sialic acids, but not sulfates in the steady state. Interestingly, Balb/c mouse strain lacks this sialylation due to a point mutation in a sialyltransferase gene, St6galnac1, which is responsible for sialyl-Tn synthesis. Introduction of intact St6galnac1 to Balb/c restores the sialylation of conjunctival goblet cell muc

[A Case of Goblet Cell Carcinoid Diagnosed after Appendectomy].

A man in his 60's was admitted to our hospital because of right lower abdominal pain. We diagnosed acute appendicitis with an abscess, and he was treated with laparoscopic-assisted appendectomy. The histopathological diagnosis was a goblet cell carcinoid (GCC) of the appendix. Because of the possibility of lymph node metastasis, the patient underwent laparoscopic- assisted ileo-cecum resection with lymph node dissection (D2). Metastasis was detected in one of the dissected lymph nodes. This patient has been followed-up for a year after surgery and no recurrences have been detected.

[A case report: patient with metastatic goblet cell carcinoid].

BACKGROUND: Goblet cell carcinoid represents a unique entity of appendiceal neoplasia. Its pathological features and clinical behavior are distinct from the classic carcinoid tumor as well as primary adenocarcinoma of the appendix. Correct histopathological classification and diagnosis provide guidelines for treatment and prognosis. Morphological transformation of the Goblet cell carcinoid from typical Goblet cell carcinoid to adenocarcinoma morphology is likely associated with accumulation of additional genetic changes that is why subclassification of this group of tumors is needed. [Rectal goblet cell carcinoid. Primary tumor or metastasis?].

Goblet cell carcinoids are biphasic neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract composed of a glandular and neuroendocrine differentiation. Typically, goblet cell carcinoids are localized in the vermiform appendix. We report the case of a 60-year-old female patient with the diagnosis of a 1.2-cm rectal goblet cell carcinoid tumor discovered during prophylactic proctocolonoscopy. Because of the known aggressive behavior of this entity, a rectosigmoidectomy was performed. The preoperative staging revealed neither local nor systemic spread. After 8 months, the patient is in good health. As a primary

SPDEF regulates goblet cell hyperplasia in the airway epithelium.

Goblet cell hyperplasia and mucous hypersecretion contribute to the pathogenesis of chronic pulmonary diseases including cystic fibrosis, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In the present work, mouse SAM pointed domain-containing ETS transcription factor (SPDEF) mRNA and protein were detected in subsets of epithelial cells lining the trachea, bronchi, and tracheal glands. SPDEF interacted with the C-terminal domain of thyroid transcription factor 1, activating transcription of genes expressed selectively in airway epithelial cells, including Sftpa, Scgb1a1, Foxj1, and Sox17. Role of mast and goblet cells in the pathogenesis of nasal polyps.

In this study, the role of mast and goblet cells and eosinophils in the pathogenesis of nasal polyposis was investigated. The study group consisted of 28 adult patients (15 males, 13 females) with nasal polyposis who underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). All patients in the study group were examined with a questionnaire, an otolaryngologic examination, an endoscopic examination with 0 degrees and 30 degrees endoscopes, Waters' graphy, and axial and coronal computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses. The control group consisted of 10 adult patients without nasal polyp (7 males

Goblet cell population among patients with inactive trachoma.

Trachoma is a chlamydial disease that affects millions of people each year, particularly in developing countries. In the chronic phase, inflammation causes scarring of the conjunctiva followed by dry eye which can result in blindness. Trachoma may cause dryness of the eye by decreasing mucus production and aqueous secretions. Conjunctival impression cytology was carried out to determine the goblet cell population among patients with trachoma. We performed impression cytology on 32 patients with inactive trachoma and 31 age and sex matched controls. Impression cytology showed that the nasal con

Goblet cell density and vascularization during conjunctival transdifferentiation.

After debridement of the entire corneal epithelium with n-heptanol, two groups of rabbit corneas were segregated according to the extent of corneal neovascularization. Using a new topographic goblet-cell counting method and routine histology, the authors have reexamined the process of conjunctival transdifferentiation and compared the changes of goblet-cell density and morphology between nonvascularized and vascularized groups for a follow-up period of 167 days. Analysis of the total goblet-cell density disclosed that no goblet cells appeared on the corneal surface during the entire period of

Conjunctival goblet cell densities in ocular surface disease.

Goblet cell densities were determined in the eyes of normal subjects and in the eyes of patients with various ocular surface diseases using an impression cytological technique. For normal eyes goblet cell densities on the interpalpebral bulbar and inferior palpebral ocular surfaces were 443 (+/- 266 [+/- SD]) and 1,972 (+/- 862) cells millimeter, per square, respectively. All patients in the ocular surface disease groups had decreased goblet cell densities compared with subjects with normal eyes. Compared with normal eyes, eyes with keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) demonstrated a 17% greater g

Goblet cell carcinoid of the appendix: Six case reports.

BACKGROUND: Goblet cell carcinoid (GCC) of the appendix is a rare tumor characterized by neuroendocrine and adenocarcinoma features. Accurate preoperative diagnosis is very difficult, with most patients complaining mainly of abdominal pain. Computed tomography shows swelling of the appendix, so diagnosis is usually made incidentally after appendectomy based on a preoperative diagnosis of appendicitis. Even if a patient undergoes preoperative colonoscopy, accurate endoscopic diagnosis is very difficult because GCC shows a submucosal growth pattern with invasion of the appendiceal wall. CASE SU

Controversies in appendiceal pathology: mucinous and goblet cell neoplasms.

Appendiceal goblet cell adenocarcinomas and mucinous neoplasms are uncommon compared with other epithelial tumours of the gastrointestinal tract. Both tumour types have been subjected to terminology that belies their biological risk and leads to confusion. Goblet cell adenocarcinomas display patchy staining for endocrine markers and, thus, were previously classified as goblet cell carcinoids. Unlike well-differentiated endocrine neoplasms, however, they often contain high-grade glandular elements and pursue an aggressive course akin to that of conventional adenocarcinoma. Although several auth

Gastric goblet cell carcinoma concurrent with a neuroendocrine tumor.

Goblet cell carcinoma, a tumor that is assumed to originate from crypt base stem cells, is a distinct type of tumor, that occurs typically in the appendix, however, extra-appendiceal locations were also described in few cases. We herein present a unique case of a 48-year-old male with a diagnosis of primary gastric Goblet cell carcinoma that was initially discovered at the time of an endoscopy performed to evaluate an unremitting abdominal pain that was accompanied by remarkable weight loss; four polypoid fragments of the gastric mucosa were sent for histopathologic examination which showed a

Endoscopic diagnosis of a goblet cell carcinoid tumour of the appendix.

Primary malignancies of the appendix are rare. Of these, less than 5% are goblet cell carcinoid (GCC) tumours. The majority of GCC present with findings of acute appendicitis or advanced peritoneal spread. We describe a rare presentation of GCC as subtle mucosal abnormality of the appendiceal orifice seen on colonoscopy performed for iron-deficiency anaemia. Biopsies were interpreted as adenocarcinoma; however, final surgical pathology confirmed GCC of the appendix with caecal involvement. The patient recovered well from surgery, anaemia resolved and follow-up did not show metastatic disease.

Modulation of conjunctival goblet cell function by inflammatory cytokines.

Ocular surface inflammation associated with Sjögren's syndrome is characterized by a loss of secretory function and alteration in numbers of mucin secreting goblet cells. Such changes are a prominent feature of ocular surface inflammatory diseases and are attributed to inflammation; however, the exact effect of the inflammatory cytokines on conjunctival goblet cell function remains largely unknown. In this study, we developed a primary culture of mouse goblet cells from conjunctival tissue and evaluated the effects on their function by inflammatory cytokines detected in the conjunctiva of mous

Schistosomiasis may contribute to goblet cell carcinoid of the appendix.

Abstract : To investigate whether schistosomiasis can contribute to appendiceal goblet cell carcinoid, appendix samples were obtained from 3 patients with combined appendiceal schistosomiasis and goblet cell carcinoid (CSG), 6 patients with goblet cell carcinoid only (GCC), 12 patients with appendiceal schistosomiasis only (ASO), and 12 cases with normal appendix (NA), all of similar gender ratio and age distributions. Hematoxylin and eosin-(H&E) stained sections were studied in 3 CSGs and 12 ASOs to diagnose schistosomiasis by detecting schistosome eggs. H&E and alcian blue/PAS-stained sectio

Goblet cells in the laryngeal mucosa in benign diseases of the larynx.

Pieces of mucosa were removed from the subglottis, the entrance into the sinus of Morgagni, and from the ventricular fold in 82 patients with benign diseases of the larynx. The goblet cells in these specimens were studied morphologically and quantitatively by an elective staining method and a whole mount technique. In 38 patients, the clinical and histological findings indicated an inflammatory disease in the form of chronic laryngitis or laryngeal edema. In 44 patients, the diagnosis was a nonmalignant tumorous lesion, such as papilloma, polyp, or cyst. These findings were compared with a sim

Mucogenic glaucoma and goblet cell cyst of the anterior chamber.

A 25-year-old woman had a unilateral open-angle glaucoma that was initially thought to be caused by an anterior uveitis. A deformity of the chamber angle was noted and interpreted as a peripheral anterior synechia or an old scar. A peculiar haze was noted in the anterior chamber. The intraocular pressure was controlled by trabeculectomy. A slowly enlarging cyst was observed at the site of a previous anterior synechia. Excision of the cyst resulted in clearing of the anterior chamber haze. The second trabeculectomy specimen contained mucous strands. Problems exist, both clinically and histopath

Corneal goblet cells and their niche: implications for corneal stem cell deficiency.

Goblet cells are terminally differentiated cells secreting mucins and antibacterial peptides that play an important role in maintaining the health of the cornea. In corneal stem cell deficiency, the progenitor cells giving rise to goblet cells on the cornea are presumed to arise from differentiation of cells that migrate onto the cornea from the neighboring conjunctiva. This occurs in response to the inability of corneal epithelial progenitor cells at the limbus to maintain an intact corneal epithelium. This study characterizes clusters of cells we refer to as compound niches at the limbal:cor
