Respiratory disease in mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) in Rwanda, 1990-2010: outbreaks, clinical course, and medical management.

Between 1990 and 2010, 18 outbreaks of respiratory disease occurred in Rwanda's wild human-habituated mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei). An outbreak was defined as clinically observable respiratory illness involving at least one third of all the gorillas in a family group (> 30% morbidity) over the course of at least 7 days. Outbreaks lasted 2 wk to 4 mo and affected up to five different gorilla family groups, either concurrently or sequentially. An outbreak was considered over if no further clinical illness was observed in the same or another group for at least 1 mo. Clinical sign

Arboreal signals in the skeletal proportions of the Gorilla foot.

Postcranial skeletal proportions in living apes have been linked to patterns of arboreal behaviors within and between populations, offering a comparative baseline for interpreting arboreal behavior in fossil hominoids. We quantified metatarsal and proximal phalangeal lengths across all five pedal rays in Gorilla, comparing western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla), low- and high-elevation Grauer's gorillas (Gorilla beringei graueri), and two ecologically distinct mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) populations: those of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda, and the Virun

Craniofacial fluctuating asymmetry in gorillas, chimpanzees, and macaques.

OBJECTIVES: Craniofacial fluctuating asymmetry (FA) refers to the random deviations from symmetry exhibited across the craniofacial complex and can be used as a measure of developmental instability for organisms with bilateral symmetry. This article addresses the lack of data on craniofacial FA in nonhuman primates by analyzing FA magnitude and variation in chimpanzees, gorillas, and macaques. We offer a preliminary investigation into how FA, as a proxy for developmental instability, varies within and among nonhuman primates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We generated 3D surface models of 121 crania

Wild gorillas as a potential reservoir of Leishmania major.

Vector-borne parasites of the genus Leishmania are responsible for severe human diseases. Cutaneous leishmaniasis, a common form of the disease, is most often caused by the transmission of Leishmania major to humans by female phlebotomine sand flies. Apes are increasingly being seen as a source of zoonotic diseases, including malaria and rickettsiosis. To examine whether gorillas harbor Leishmania species, we screened fecal samples from wild western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) in Cameroon for the presence of these pathogens. Of 91 wild gorilla fecal samples, 12 contained Leishman

A gorilla-sized ape from the miocene of India.

A large ape existed in India at the close of the Miocene or the beginning of the Pliocene epochs; this ape shows a complex of anatomical structures at the opposite pole from its contemporary, Ramapithecus. Although found in the same beds, the two seldom occur at the same exact sites and levels. Considering the thickness of these beds, recovery close to Haritalyangar does not, of itself, prove sympatry of these two different kinds of Hominoidea. However, both are definitely present at one recently located site representing, most probably, a death assemblage. Observations by the authors on score

Phylogenomic evidence for recombination of adenoviruses in wild gorillas.

Human adenoviruses (HAdVs) of species Human mastadenovirus B (HAdV-B) are genetically highly diverse and comprise several pathogenic types. AdVs closely related to members of HAdV-B infect African great apes and the evolutionary origin of HAdV-B has recently been determined in ancient gorillas. Genetic evidence for intra- and inter-species recombination has been obtained for AdVs of humans and captive great apes, but evidence from wild great apes is lacking. In this study, potential HAdV-B members of wild Eastern gorillas were analysed for evidence of recombination. One near-complete genome wa

The bias of the question posed: a diagnostic "invisible gorilla".

Posing a question can introduce a powerful bias into the diagnostic process. A clinical case is presented to demonstrate how a colleague's diagnostic question can focus the clinicians' attention on one detail, distracting and blinding them even to the most obvious and important clinical findings. This "inattentional blindness" is similar to the phenomenon demonstrated by Simons in the famous "invisible gorilla" psychological experiment. As much as practical, clinicians should attempt to assess referred patients independently before considering previous clinical information; including the quest

Ecological divergence and medial cuneiform morphology in gorillas.

Gorillas are more closely related to each other than to any other extant primate and are all terrestrial knuckle-walkers, but taxa differ along a gradient of dietary strategies and the frequency of arboreality in their behavioral repertoire. In this study, we test the hypothesis that medial cuneiform morphology falls on a morphocline in gorillas that tracks function related to hallucial abduction ability and relative frequency of arboreality. This morphocline predicts that western gorillas, being the most arboreal, should display a medial cuneiform anatomy that reflects the greatest hallucial

Ultrasonic evaluation of echinococcosis in four lowland gorillas.

Four captive lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) were subjected to abdominal ultrasonic scanning. Evidence of progressive infection by the enzootic parasite Echinococcus vogeli was observed in all 4 of them. Ultrasonic scanning revealed abdominal disease, with evidence of both hepatic and bowel involvement. Three gorillas subsequently died. Necropsy results validated the ultrasonic diagnoses.

Gorilla Glue Ingestion in Dogs: 22 Cases (2005-2019).

Gorilla Glue contains methylene diphenyl diisocyanate that expands significantly and hardens once exposed to moisture. Case reports of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate glue ingestion in dogs document gastrointestinal foreign body formation and mechanical obstruction. Medical record queries from four veterinary hospitals identified 22 dogs with Gorilla Glue ingestion. Records were evaluated retrospectively to characterize clinical presentation, diagnostic findings, treatment, and patient outcome. Vomiting was the most common clinical sign (n = 11), with a median time from ingestion to presentati

Giardia in mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei), forest buffalo (Syncerus caffer), and domestic cattle in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda.

Mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) are critically endangered primates surviving in two isolated populations in protected areas within the Virunga Massif of Rwanda, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. Mountain gorillas face intense ecologic pressures due to their proximity to humans. Human communities outside the national parks, and numerous human activities within the national parks (including research, tourism, illegal hunting, and anti-poaching patrols), lead to a high degree of contact between mountain gorillas and wildlif

Monkeys (Sapajus apella and Macaca tonkeana) and great apes (Gorilla gorilla, Pongo abelii, Pan paniscus, and Pan troglodytes) play for the highest bid.

Many studies investigate the decisions made by animals by focusing on their attitudes toward risk, that is, risk-seeking, risk neutrality, or risk aversion. However, little attention has been paid to the extent to which individuals understand the different odds of outcomes. In a previous gambling task involving 18 different lotteries (Pelé, Broihanne, Thierry, Call, & Dufour, 2014), nonhuman primates used probabilities of gains and losses to make their decision. Although the use of complex mathematical calculation for decision-making seemed unlikely, we applied a gradual decrease in the chance

Secondary Spontaneous Pneumothorax in Asthma: A Dancing Gorilla Moment.

This report describes how cognitive bias contributed to a delay in diagnosing secondary spontaneous pneumothorax in a patient with asthma. A female in her 70s with a past history of asthma presented with shortness of breath at rest and chest pain. She was treated for an acute asthma exacerbation but did not respond as expected. With failure to improve overnight, a review of the chest X-ray revealed a right-sided pneumothorax that had not been previously recognised. This case illustrates how clinicians' susceptibility to cognitive biases and perceptual errors can affect patient care. It highlig

Characterization of recombinant gorilla adenovirus HPV therapeutic vaccine PRGN-2009.

There are approximately 44,000 cases of human papillomavirus-associated (HPV-associated) cancer each year in the United States, most commonly caused by HPV types 16 and 18. Prophylactic vaccines successfully prevent healthy people from acquiring HPV infections via HPV-specific antibodies. In order to treat established HPV-associated malignancies, however, new therapies are necessary. Multiple recombinant gorilla adenovirus HPV vaccine constructs were evaluated in NSG-β2m-/- peripheral blood mononuclear cell-humanized mice bearing SiHa, a human HPV16+ cervical tumor, and/or in the syngeneic HPV

Lethal combats in the forest among wild western gorillas.

Lethal intergroup encounters occur in many species because of sexual selection. While documented in mountain gorillas, they are absent in western gorillas as, instead, it is predicted by their higher feeding (frugivory) and mate competition (single-vs. multi-male groups). We investigate whether the injuries on three dead silverbacks and one adult female from four groups of western gorillas in the Central African Republic, resulted from interactions with gorillas or leopards. We identified two distinct injury patterns caused by gorillas (isolated lacerations, round wounds) and leopards (punctur

The genetic impact of an Ebola outbreak on a wild gorilla population.

BACKGROUND: Numerous Ebola virus outbreaks have occurred in Equatorial Africa over the past decades. Besides human fatalities, gorillas and chimpanzees have also succumbed to the fatal virus. The 2004 outbreak at the Odzala-Kokoua National Park (Republic of Congo) alone caused a severe decline in the resident western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) population, with a 95% mortality rate. Here, we explore the immediate genetic impact of the Ebola outbreak in the western lowland gorilla population. RESULTS: Associations with survivorship were evaluated by utilizing DNA obtained from fe

Strategies for ovulation induction and oocyte retrieval in the lowland gorilla.

PURPOSE: Ovulation induction and oocyte retrieval were performed in a lowland gorilla in an attempt to propagate and potentially cryopreserve embryos from an infertile animal and to advance techniques to help preserve this endangered species. RESULTS: Following 34 days of leuprolide acetate suppression, human menopausal gonadotropins were administered for 14-days in a 32-year-old wild-born lowland gorilla. Ten oocytes were retrieved by transrectal ultrasound-guided aspiration. Other approaches to oocyte recovery were not feasible in this case. A serum estradiol concentration of 4700 pg/ml at

Alveolar hydatidosis in a gorilla and a ring-tailed lemur in Japan.

Alveolar hydatidosis by Echinococcus multilocularis (Em) infection occurred on a 22-year-old (approx.) male gorilla (Gorilla gorilla) and a 4-year-old female ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) in a zoo, in Hokkaido, Japan. Case 1: The gorilla presented neurologic signs in course of nine months and died. Pathologically, alveolar hydatid lesions were found in the liver, the liver-associated lymph nodes, the cerebrum, and the lungs. A protoscolex was found only in one hepatic cyst. Case 2: In the lemur, large masses of hydatide cysts were found on the liver and at the lung-associated lymph nodes. Cy
