Cell wall composition affects Cd2+ accumulation and intracellular thiol peptides in marine red algae.

Two red macroalgae species, Gracilaria cornea and Chondrophycus poiteaui, were evaluated for their intra and extracellular Cd2+ accumulation capacity, photosynthetic response and thiol peptide production. Algae were exposed for 3 and 7 days to 0.1 and 1 microg CdCl2 ml(-1) (0.89 and 8.9 microM). Intracellular accumulation of Cd2+ by G. cornea was relatively low, only comprising 20% of total metal (intracellular+extracellular). In contrast, C. poiteaui accumulated intracellularly close to 100% of total Cd2+. In both species, metal uptake was dependent on the external Cd2+ concentration, metal e

Computational and experimental insights into the interaction of the seaweed-derived steroidal metabolite 11α-hydroxyprogesterone with the glucocorticoid receptor.

Seaweed-derived metabolites offer a rich source of bioactive compounds with therapeutic potential. In this study, 112 steroidal metabolites from Sargassum polycystum, Gracilaria fisheri, and Caulerpa lentillifera were computationally screened to identify candidates interacting with the glucocorticoid receptor (GR), a key molecule regulating inflammatory signaling. Among them, 11α-hydroxyprogesterone (SW052) from S. polycystum exhibited the favorable predicted GR binding affinity (-11.6 kcal/mol), comparable to hydrocortisone and medrysone. Molecular docking and 500 ns molecular dynamics simula

Evaluation of Brown and red seaweeds-extracts as a novel larvicidal agent against the deadly human diseases-vectors, Anopheles stephensi, Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus.

Infectious diseases such as malaria, dengue, and yellow fever are predominantly transmitted by insect vectors like Anopheles stephensi, Aedes aegypti, and Culex quinquefasciatus in tropical regions like India and Africa. In this study, we assessed the larvicidal activity of commonly found seaweeds, including Padina gymnospora, P. pavonica, Gracilaria crassa, Amphiroa fragilissima, and Spatoglossum marginatum, against these mosquito vectors. Our findings indicate that extracts from P. gymnospora Ethyl Acetate (PgEA), P. pavonica Hexane (PpH), and A. fragilissima Ethyl Acetate (AfEA) displayed t

Algal protein-based 3D-printed fish-analogs as a new approach for sustainable seafood.

Rising global demand for animal-products exceeds human-population growth. This unsustainable trend causes harmful ecological effects. Overfishing causes extinction of aquatic animals and a dangerous biodiversity loss harming aquatic ecosystems. Hence, replacing animal-based food, particularly beef and fish, with sustainable alternatives is an urgent vital global mission. Analogs of animal-based products include plant-based, tissue-culture-based and fermentation-based products. Fish analogs have mainly been based on plant-protein, fungi, tissue-culture, but to our knowledge, fish analogs made o

Negative and positive effects of an invasive gastropod on seagrass performance and biodiversity.

Estuarine seagrass meadows are ecologically and socio-economically valuable habitats, but face pressures from nutrient runoffs, drift algal accumulations, and introduced species. In the Swan River estuary (Western Australia), the introduced snail Batillaria australis has proliferated since initial observations in 1954. Here, we quantified the distribution and effects of B. australis on associated benthic communities. Field surveys revealed extremely high densities of B. australis in Halophila ovalis seagrass beds, increasing from 424 ± 28 m2 in 2006 to 1212 ± 122 m2 in 2011 but then decreasing
