Use of multiple correspondence analysis to explore associations between caregivers and sun protective habits during summer vacations.

BACKGROUND: Childhood exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) plays an important role in the development of keratinocyte carcinomas and melanomas. Therefore, sun protective measures ought to be implemented during early childhood. Young children are largely dependent upon adult care providers in order to achieve proper sun protection. OBJECTIVES: To develop effective photoprotection in children, it is necessary to understand caregivers' attitudes and knowledge about UVR exposure. This study aimed to explore the variables associated with sun protective behaviour in parents and grandparents duri

Pneumocystis jirovecii transmission from immunocompetent carriers to infant.

We report a case of Pneumocystis jirovecii transmission from colonized grandparents to their infant granddaughter. Genotyping of P. jirovecii showed the same genotypes in samples from the infant and her grandparents. These findings support P. jirovecii transmission from immunocompetent carrier adults to a susceptible child.

Cost-effectiveness of population based BRCA testing with varying Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry.

BACKGROUND: Population-based BRCA1/BRCA2 testing has been found to be cost-effective compared with family history-based testing in Ashkenazi-Jewish women were >30 years old with 4 Ashkenazi-Jewish grandparents. However, individuals may have 1, 2, or 3 Ashkenazi-Jewish grandparents, and cost-effectiveness data are lacking at these lower BRCA prevalence estimates. We present an updated cost-effectiveness analysis of population BRCA1/BRCA2 testing for women with 1, 2, and 3 Ashkenazi-Jewish grandparents. STUDY DESIGN: Decision analysis model. METHODS: Lifetime costs and effects of population an

A geneticist's perspective from within a broiler primary breeder company.

Recent trends occurring in broiler primary breeding companies are described. The structure and operation of broiler primary breeder companies are described from pedigree elite populations, through great-grandparent and grandparent generations, down to the parent stock. The relatively low value of fertility and hatchability, compared with yield and feed efficiency as selection traits, is assessed. The impact of the last 10 yr of genetic improvement in broiler and breeder traits are quantified and discussed, and predictions for future performance are made. It is concluded that artificial insemin

Will teenagers today live with and care for their aged parents tomorrow?

AIMS: Older adults who live alone are vulnerable physically, emotionally and socially. However, there is a trend towards children not living with their parents. We studied the willingness of teenagers today to live with and care for their aged parents tomorrow, and the reasons for their decision. METHODS: A convenient sample of 1405 teenage students (M age  = 14.9 ± 1.30) in the north region of Singapore completed a purpose-designed questionnaire. Structural equation modeling was used to explore the relationships between teenagers' closeness to grandparents, challenges faced living with grand

Frequency and origin of G-6-PD deficiency among icteric newborns in the metropolitan area of Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico.

829 icteric newborn males were studied in order to have more information about the frequency of the G-6-PD deficiency and its origin in the population of the Monterrey Metropolitan area (MMA), in northeastern Mexico. For each subject information about the maternal grandparents' birthplace (states of Mexico) was gathered. The newborns were grouped into five geographic areas. It was found that the frequency of G-6-PD deficiency is higher in icterics than in normal newborns. The grandparents of the deficient newborns with variant B belonged to the northeastern states of Mexico where more European

Cancer in homozygotes and heterozygotes of ataxia-telangiectasia and xeroderma pigmentosum in Britain.

We have documented mortality and cancer incidence in the families of 67 patients with ataxia-telangiectasia and 48 patients with xeroderma pigmentosum resident in Britain. For both diseases, parents of patients are obligate heterozygotes and grandparents have a probability of heterozygosity of 0.5. Fourteen ataxia-telangiectasia patients had died by June 30, 1986. This was a significant excess (14 deaths observed, 1.65 expected). Only one death was from a malignancy (non-Hodgkin's lymphoma). Three parents of ataxia-telangiectasia patients had died, all from cancer. The excess from breast cance

Does Poverty Explain All? A Path Analysis of Single Mothers' Dietary Behaviors in Japan.

Background/Objectives: In Japan, single mothers face a high risk of poverty and poorer dietary quality than partnered mothers; however, the pathways underlying these disparities remain unclear. This study examined whether economic status mediates the association between family structure and maternal dietary behaviors and whether intergenerational co-residence modifies these pathways. Methods: Using nationally representative repeated cross-sectional survey data from 2018 to 2022 (N = 1319 mothers), we conducted path analysis of dietary awareness and behaviors. Family structure was classified as

Love, Listen and Learn: Grandmothers' Experiences of Grief Following Their Child's Pregnancy Loss.

OBJECTIVES: In Australia, 15-20% of pregnancies result in miscarriage, and 0.69% in stillbirth. Pregnancy loss is a distressing experience for parents, with many turning to their own parents for support. Pregnancy loss has been identified as an ambiguous loss, leading to disenfranchised grief. However little research has been conducted regarding grandparents' experiences following pregnancy loss. Much of what is known comes indirectly from family studies of grief and loss. This study aimed to explore grandparents' experiences of loss and grief, following a child's pregnancy loss. DESIGN: A gr

Adolescent-to-Mother Psychological Aggression: The Role of Father Violence and Maternal Parenting Style.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent-to-parent psychological aggression is often a precursor to physical aggression toward their parents. Recently, there have been 4 high-profile matricide cases that happened in China. To date, there is limited research in Confucian filial piety culture on child-to-parent psychological aggression, especially toward the mother who is overwhelming the target of children's aggression. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study is to explore the prevalence of adolescent-to-mother psychological aggression and examine the role of father violence and maternal parenting style in contributi

Lost in transmission? Comparing emotional profiles in transmitted vs. remembered family memories.

This research investigated the emotions associated with intergenerational memories within families. Across three studies, we examined the perspectives of transmitters (parents and grandparents) and receivers (children and grandchildren) regarding important family memories. In Studies 1 and 2, transmitters selected memories they had previously shared with a specific family member, whereas receivers independently selected memories told by the same family member. Study 3 combined these datasets to compare emotional patterns across generations. Across studies, transmitters reported higher emotiona

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and Alzheimer's disease and any dementia: A multi-generation cohort study in Sweden.

INTRODUCTION: We examined the extent to which attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a neurodevelopmental disorder, is linked with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and any dementia, neurodegenerative diseases, across generations. METHODS: A nationwide cohort born between 1980 and 2001 (index persons) were linked to their biological relatives (parents, grandparents, uncles/aunts) using Swedish national registers. We used Cox models to examine the cross-generation associations. RESULTS: Among relatives of 2,132,929 index persons, 3042 parents, 171,732 grandparents, and 1369 uncles/aunts had

Associations between family history of alcohol use problems and undergraduate students' alcohol use: a brief report.

OBJECTIVE: Family history (FH) of alcohol use problems are associated with undergraduate student alcohol use. Research is limited by generally focusing on the role of parents alone. Therefore, this research examined the association between parents' and grandparents' alcohol problems and undergraduate student alcohol use. PARTICIPANTS: Data from 79 undergraduate students were examined. METHODS: Secondary data analyses were conducted using cross-sectional baseline data from an experimental study investigating pain coping and alcohol urge. RESULTS: FH of severe alcohol use problems was positiv

"Their Bodies Were Made to Move and Wriggle Right from the Word Go": A Qualitative Exploration of Family Engagement with Fundamental Movement Skills in Early Childhood.

Background: Fundamental movement skills (FMS) underpin lifelong physical activity (PA) and health, yet many children are failing to meet age-appropriate standards. Caregivers hold a critical influence over children's motor development, but little is known about what helps or hinders family participation, including messaging. This study explored the determinants of family FMS engagement in the United Kingdom (UK) during early childhood, addressing unexplored gaps in how guidance reaches families and the role of grandparents in supporting children's motor development. Methods: Twenty-three semi-

Couples' experiences of grandparenthood: Grandchild-related bliss and psychological well-being.

Building on family systems theory and lifespan views on aging, the present study investigates how the experiences of grandchild-related bliss (i.e., the subjective fulfillment and joy of having a grandchild) are related to grandparental couples' partnership-related and general well-being. We hypothesized both (a) actor effects (i.e., a grandparent's grandchild-related bliss is positively associated with this grandparent's well-being) and (b) partner effects (i.e., a grandparent's grandchild-related bliss is positively associated with the partner's well-being). We used the actor-partner interde

Grandmother presence improved grandchild survival against childhood infections but not vaccination coverage in historical Finns.

Grandmother presence can improve the number and survival of their grandchildren, but what grandmothers protect against and how they achieve it remains poorly known. Before modern medical care, infections were leading causes of childhood mortality, alleviated from the nineteenth century onwards by vaccinations, among other things. Here, we combine two individual-based datasets on the genealogy, cause-specific mortality and vaccination status of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Finns to investigate two questions. First, we tested whether there were cause-specific benefits of grandmother presen

Leveraging multigenerational health data to enhance mental disorder risk prediction: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders are highly prevalent, and comorbidities between physical and mental health conditions are common. Physical comorbidities and family health histories may improve the accuracy of mental disorder risk prediction. We developed prediction models for mental disorder risk using comprehensive individual and family mental and physical health histories. METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study using administrative Health data in Manitoba, Canada, and included adults between 1977 and 2020 with linkages to at least one parent and one grandparent. Mental disorders

A premature termination mutation in a patient with Lowe syndrome without congenital cataracts: dropping the "O" in OCRL.

The oculocerebrorenal syndrome of Lowe is an X-linked recessive disorder characterized by the triad of congenital cataracts, mental retardation and a renal proximal tubulopathy. Although severity of phenotype might vary, congenital cataracts are part of the definition of this rare disorder. We report a 13-year-old patient with the typical cerebrorenal phenotype of Lowe syndrome, that had remained undiagnosed due to absence of any ocular involvement. OCRL gene analysis was carried.DNA analysis revealed a c.C760T (p.Gln199X) nonsense mutation in exon 8 expected to cause complete disruption of OCR
