Plasma cell granuloma is a rare, benign tumor that affects people at all ages and most frequently involves the lung, gastrointestinal tract, and salivary gland. They are the most common, isolated, primary lesion of the lung in children less than 16 years of age, and usually present as circumscribed, peripheral, parenchymal tumors, which may be static or increase slowly in size without causing symptoms. Seven patients (mean age, 50.7 +/- 20.4 years; range 21-77) with plasma cell granuloma (PCG) of the lung are reported. Cough and sputum were the most common presenting symptoms, followed by fever. Elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate and serum C-reactive protein levels were found in all patients tested. Plasma cell polyps of the vocal fold (plasma cell granulomas) are rare inflammatory polyps of the larynx. They should be included in the clinical and histological differential diagnosis of laryngeal polyps. Histologically they are polyclonal aggregates of plasma cells. It is essential to distinguish them from monoclonal, neoplastic plasma cell proliferations. The treatment of choice is surgical resection, although radiotherapy, laser ablation, antibiotics and steroids have been used successfully. We present a case of plasma cell granuloma presenting as a vocal fold polyp, treated surgically.

Fourteen inflammatory disease cases in which differential diagnoses from tumorous lesions had been difficult and which were confirmed by thoracotomies, were studied. Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare disease that is considered an intermediate neoplasm, with the risk of recurrence and metastasis. Surgical treatment is the standard therapy for IMT, although there are only a few reports of surgery for lung metastasis of pulmonary IMT. We opine that surgical treatment might be effective not only for localized tumors, but also for cases of lung metastasis of IMT.

Fifty surgical specimens from 10 different diseases were examined for the presence of binucleate plasma cells. Thirty-three specimens showed binucleated plasma cells.
