PURPOSE: We examined the roles of gray-scale and color Doppler sonography in the diagnosis of granulomatous mastitis.
METHODS: We retrospectively studied the clinical, mammographic, and sonographic findings in 10 women 24-57 years old (mean age, 35.9+/-13.9 years) who had a histopathologic diagnosis of granulomatous mastitis. All patients underwent gray-scale sonographic examination, and 8 patients were further examined with color Doppler imaging. Seven patients had previously undergone mammography.
RESULTS: Mammographic findings were nonspecific in all 7 patients. Gray-scale sonographic fin

An acute manifestation of a chronic brucellosis localised to the female breast is described. A granulomatous mastitis was identified on histological examination. To our knowledge, this is the first reported occurrence of this phenomenon. It is pointed out that it is clinically difficult to distinguish this type of infection from an inflammatory carcinoma of the breast.

Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is an immune-mediated inflammatory breast disease presenting significant treatment challenges due to its varied symptoms and lack of standardized guidelines. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of immunosuppressive modalities, including corticosteroids (CS) and immunosuppressive agents such as methotrexate (MTX) and azathioprine (AZA), in managing IGM, with a focus on recurrence rates and treatment outcomes. We conducted a retrospective analysis of 505 female patients diagnosed with IGM at the Bursa Uludag University Breast Surgery Clinic

INTRODUCTION: Digital Mammography (DM) is extensively used for breast imaging however, lesion visibility is often limited by overlapping tissues, which affects lesion characterization. Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) reduces the effect of overlapping tissues and helps in revealing obscured findings. We aimed to describe the mammographic findings in granulomatous and non-granulomatous mastitis and assess the utility of adjunctive DBT in lesion characterization.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: DM and DBT images of histo-pathologically diagnosed cases of granulomatous (GM) and non-granulomatous mastit

Objectives: There is no consensus regarding the surgical or immunosuppressive treatment of idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM). This study aimed to introduce a clinical classification system for IGM that might facilitate its treatment and predict recurrence. Methods: We analyzed the management of 68 patients with IGM at (Princess Basma Teaching Hospital and King Abdulla University Hospital (1994-2016) to find out if distinct patterns of presentation exist according to the following parameters: presence of a painful or painless breast mass, local inflammation, abscess formation, communicati

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a rare benign breast disease, which can be protracted, disfiguring and may be linked to an underlying autoimmune disorder. The clinical presentation may mimic bacterial mastitis or carcinoma.
AIMS: To review the mode of presentation, diagnosis, management, resolution and incidence of IGM in three tertiary breast centres and propose guidelines for management.
METHODS: The breast and anatomical databases of three centres were reviewed from January 2000 to December 2013 to identify patients with histological diagnosis of IGM. Clinical and

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a rare inflammatory disease. Because of it's uncommon etiology and rareness, diagnosis and treatment is still a challenge. Owing to wide spectrum of IGM it is difficult to standardize and optimize the treatment. The aim of this study was to report and describe the clinical signs, radiological findings, management, clinical course and the recurrence rate of the patients which were treated due to IGM.
METHODS: In this retrospective review of patients diagnosed with IGM histopathologically between January 2006 and December 2011, medical repo

PURPOSE: The treatment of choice for idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) has not yet been established. There are limited data on the use of methotrexate (MTX) in the treatment of IGM. Herein, we investigated the role of MTX in the treatment of IGM patients.
METHODS: We present four new cases of IGM treated with MTX and a review of the English language literature concerning the use of MTX in the treatment of IGM.
RESULTS: We prospectively investigated the clinicopathological features of four female patients (aged 28-37 years) who were multiparous and had used oral contraceptives. The pati

The aim of this study was to describe the mammographic and sonographic findings of idiopathic granulomatous mastitis which is a rare inflammatory disease of the breast of unknown etiology. The clinical, radiologic, and pathologic features of 12 cases with idiopathic granulomatous mastitis were retrospectively reviewed. Mammography was performed in all cases, 8 of which showed a focal asymmetric density, 3 had a mass with irregular margins, and 1 had no abnormality. Sonography was performed in 10 cases, and a focal area with inhomogeneous and hypoechoic pattern was depicted in 6 cases, 4 of whi

We report a case of idiopathic granulomatous mastitis in a 35-year-old Japanese woman, who came to our hospital complaining of a tender mass in her right breast. Because the results of initial aspiration cytology were considered highly suspicious for carcinoma, modified radical mastectomy was performed. However, the final histological diagnosis was granulomatous lobular mastitis with no evidence of malignancy. Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis is a rare inflammatory breast disease of unknown etiology. Since the clinical manifestations are similar to those of mammary carcinoma, this condition h

Granulomatous lobular mastitis (GLM) is a chronic inflammatory breast disease of unknown aetiology, characterised by granulomatous inflammation centred on the mammary lobules. Clinically, it presents with breast redness, swelling, and ulceration, with a protracted course prone to recurrence. Its development is closely associated with multiple factors including milk stasis, hyperprolactinemia, ductal injury, and microbial infection. The pathogenesis remains incompletely elucidated, with various hypotheses proposed such as autoimmune responses, delayed-type hypersensitivity, and autoinflammatory

OBJECTIVE: Granulomatous mastitis is an uncommon benign breast disease. Varied aetiologies such as tuberculosis, foreign body reactions, sarcoidosis, fungal and parasitic infections and autoimmunity have been suggested. Pre-operative definitive diagnosis is essential for proper treatment. In developing countries like India, fine needle aspiration is still widely used as a reliable technique for preoperative evaluation of palpable breast lumps. The objective of this study is to study the cytomorphological features of different forms of granulomatous mastitis and correlate with other clinical fi

The authors report a case of granulomatous mastitis associated with erythema nodosum and oligoarthritis. The skin and joint symptoms improved with potassium iodide. The breast lesion clinically simulated a tumor of high malignant grade. Granulomatous mastitis is a benign and rare disease. Its interest lies in the possible association with systemic manifestations and in its steroid responsiveness. This condition has been recently described as a distinct entity. When associated with systemic manifestations, sarcoidosis should be considered.
