Automatic recognition of schizophrenia from brain-network features using graph convolutional neural network.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness that imposes considerable economic burden on families and society. However, its clinical diagnosis primarily relies on scales and doctors' clinical experience and lacks an objective and accurate diagnostic approach. In recent years, graph convolutional neural networks (GCN) have been used to assist in psychiatric diagnosis owing to their ability to learn spatial-association information. Therefore, this study proposes a schizophrenia automatic recognition model based on graph convolutional neural network. Herein, the resting-state electroencephalography

Intelligent audit decision support for enterprise related-party transactions based on knowledge graph and graph neural network.

Related-party transactions (RPTs) occupy a central position in contemporary corporate governance, serving as essential channels for resource allocation among affiliated business entities. The growing complexity of ownership arrangements and globalized operations has made RPT auditing increasingly challenging for financial professionals. Traditional audit methodologies struggle with intricate enterprise relationship networks that often span multiple jurisdictions and involve layered ownership through shell companies, rendering manual inspection approaches both time-consuming and incomplete. Interpretable AI-assisted diagnosis of papillary thyroid cancer cytopathology using graph neural networks and knowledge graphs.

This study presents an interpretable AI-assisted diagnostic approach for papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) cytopathology by combining graph neural networks (GNNs) with knowledge graphs (KGs). Routine cytology smears from 281 PTC cases were scanned, labeled, and processed using the Cascade RCNN model to detect pathological cell features, including 45,680 ground-glass nuclei, 712 nuclear grooves, and 116 intranuclear inclusions. By integrating GNNs, the model achieved a mean intersection over union (mIoU) of 56.14% and a mean average precision (mAP) of 0.87. The GINet model further improved clas

Predicting CircRNA-Disease Associations Based on Heterogeneous Graph Neural Network and Knowledge Graph Attribute Mining Attention.

The exploration of associations between circular RNAs (circRNAs) and diseases contributes to a deeper understanding of the pathogenesis of diseases. Many computational methods have been proposed for circRNA-disease associations identification. However, these methods still exhibit some limitations such as ignoring the effect of noise. In this paper, we proposed a new knowledge graph attribute mining attention network (KAATCDA) to predict circRNA-disease associations based on knowledge graph attribute network (KGA) and attribute mining attention network (AMA). Firstly, KGA is used to learn the f

Memory-augmented graph neural networks for multi-class cardiovascular disease recognition from 12-lead ECG signals.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Cardiovascular disease recognition from electrocardiogram (ECG) requires capturing subtle pre-symptomatic electrical abnormalities that manifest across spatially distributed leads and evolve temporally. Current predictive models inadequately address three critical challenges: the anatomical coupling between ECG leads reflecting cardiac electrical propagation, the multi-scale temporal dynamics spanning millisecond depolarization to circadian rhythms, and the progressive nature of cardiac pathophysiology. We developed an integrated spatiotemporal framework to model thes

Heterogeneous graph neural networks reveal molecular mechanisms of folate deficiency in placental insufficiency through multiomics integration.

Placental insufficiency affects five to ten% of pregnancies worldwide, and folate deficiency has emerged as a key contributing factor. The molecular pathways linking folate metabolism to placental pathology remain poorly characterized. We developed a heterogeneous graph neural network framework that integrates genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic data to investigate these mechanisms. Our network architecture explicitly models diverse node types and edge relationships within biological networks, addressing limitations of conventional approaches that treat molecular entities unifo

Implementing the discontinuous-Galerkin finite element method using graph neural networks with application to diffusion equations.

Machine learning (ML) has benefited from both software and hardware advancements, leading to increasing interest in capitalising on ML throughout academia and industry. There have been efforts in the scientific computing community to leverage this development via implementing conventional partial differential equation (PDE) solvers with machine learning packages, most of which rely on structured spatial discretisation and fast convolution algorithms. However, unstructured meshes are favoured in problems with complex geometries. To bridge this gap, we propose to implement the unstructured Finit

Rutting prediction and analysis of influence factors based on multivariate transfer entropy and graph neural networks.

The Rutting prediction model is an essential element of efficient pavement management systems. Accuracy of commonly used predictive model necessitates knowledge of the input parameters that was incorporated and local calibration of the model coefficients. In this paper, a novel rutting prediction model based on multivariate transfer entropy and graph neural networks is proposed for incorporating a limited number of observable inputs, which can accommodate with sufficient prediction performance and generalization to a variety of complex pavement design structure data. The multivariate transfer

Nonsuicidal self-injury prediction with pain-processing neural circuits using interpretable graph neural network.

BACKGROUND: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) involves the intentional destruction of one's own body tissues without suicidal intent. Prior research has shown that individuals with NSSI exhibit abnormal pain perception; however, the pain-processing neural circuits underlying NSSI remain poorly understood. This study leverages graph neural networks to predict NSSI risk and examine the learned connectivity of neural underpinnings using multimodal data. METHODS: Resting-state functional MRI and diffusion tensor imaging were collected from 50 patients with NSSI, 79 healthy controls (HC), and 44 pati

Data-Driven Prediction of Ultraviolet-Visible Spectra From Molecular Structure Using Attention-Based Graph Neural Networks.

Predicting UV-vis spectra from molecular structure is an important but relatively underexplored task. In this study, we developed a deep learning approach based on graph neural networks (GNNs) to directly predict UV-vis spectra from SMILES representations. Several GNN architectures were evaluated, among which Attentive Fingerprint achieved the best performance with an R2 of 0.8630, mean absolute error of 0.0389, root mean squared error of 0.0740, cosine similarity of 0.9589, Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.9521, and distance metric of 1.5758 on the test set. Further analysis showed that t

Temporal-Directional Tree-Walk Graph Neural Network for Illicit Transaction Detection.

Illicit transactions in large-scale financial networks manifest as rare, directional temporal motifs, which are critical for accurate detection. However, existing graph-based methods often ignore temporal causality, underutilize directional motifs, or rely on ad hoc weighting, limiting minority-class recognition. This article proposes a temporal-directional tree-walk graph neural network (TDTW-GNN), a causal, motif-aware framework for imbalanced edge classification on continuous-time dynamic graphs (CTDGs). In particular, TDTW-GNN constructs node memories via a temporal graph network (TGN) bac

MAISNet: a multi-species integrated graph neural network for acetylcholinesterase inhibitor screening.

MOTIVATION: Global population aging has led to a rapid increase in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although existing drugs can temporarily alleviate symptoms, none have been proven to delay or prevent disease progression. Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEIs) have been shown to mitigate AD symptoms, yet traditional AChEI screening approaches remain time-consuming and inefficient. RESULTS: To address this limitation, we developed multi-species AChEI screening network (MAISNet), an AChEI screening framework based on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) data from six spec

A novel neural network model with SAGPooling graph decodes changes in cognitive trajectories.

Accurately predicting the progression of neurodegenerative diseases and identifying key brain regions influencing the disease course are critical research topics in neuroimaging. Self-Attention Graph Pooling (SAGPooling) can be used to enhance prediction efficiency and accuracy. The atlas-constrained spatial-informational SAGPooling graph neural network (ACSI-SGNN) model is proposed to enable precise prediction of patients' cognitive resilience and identification of brain regions closely associated with resilience. Considering the complex structure and functionality of brain networks, frequenc

Dynamically weighted graph neural network for detection of early mild cognitive impairment.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disease that primarily affects the elderly population. The early detection of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) holds significant clinical importance for prompt intervention and treatment of AD. Currently, functional connectivity (FC) networks-based diagnostic methods for early MCI (eMCI) detection are widely employed. FC considers the interaction patterns between brain regions as a topological structure. Recently, graph neural network (GNN) approaches have been utilized for disease diagnosis using FC networks, leveraging their ability to

Schizophrenia recognition based on three-dimensional adaptive graph convolutional neural network.

Previous deep learning-based brain network research has made significant progress in understanding the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. However, it ignores the three-dimensional spatial characteristics of EEG signals and cannot dynamically learn the interactions between nodes. To address this issue, a schizophrenia classification model based on a three-dimensional adaptive graph convolutional neural network (3D-AGCN) is proposed. Each subject's EEG data is divided into various segment lengths and frequency bands for the experiment. The attention mechanism is then used to integrate the node fe

GraphDeep-hERG: Graph Neural Network PharmacoAnalytics for Assessing hERG-Related Cardiotoxicity.

PURPOSE: The human Ether-a-go-go Related-Gene (hERG) encodes rectifying potassium channels that play a significant role during action potential repolarization of cardiomyocytes. Blockade of the hERG channel by off-target drugs can lead to long QT syndrome, significantly increasing the risk of proarrhythmic cardiotoxicity. Traditional hERG screening methods are effort-demanding and time-consuming. Thus, it is essential to develop computational methods to utilize the existing knowledge for faster and more accurate in silico screening. Although with wide use of deep learning/machine learning algo

Dementia classification using a graph neural network on imaging of effective brain connectivity.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) are two of the most common forms of neurodegenerative diseases. The literature suggests that effective brain connectivity (EBC) has the potential to track differences between AD, PD and healthy controls (HC). However, how to effectively use EBC estimations for the research of disease diagnosis remains an open problem. To deal with complex brain networks, graph neural network (GNN) has been increasingly popular in very recent years and the effectiveness of combining EBC and GNN techniques has been unexplored in the field of dementia diagnosi

EEG based depression recognition using improved graph convolutional neural network.

Depression is a global psychological disease that does serious harm to people. Traditional diagnostic method of the doctor-patient communication, is not objective and accurate enough. Thus, a more accurate and objective method for depression detection is urgently needed. Resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) can effectively reflect brain function, which have been used to study the difference of the brain between the depression patients and normal controls. In this work, the Resting-state EEG data of 27 depression patients and 28 normal controls was used in this study. We constructed the b

DeepThermoMix: a local composition graph neural network model for multicomponent activity coefficients.

Local composition theory postulates that the immediate molecular environment of a component differs from the bulk mixture composition. Classical local composition models describe this by using fixed algebraic expressions in the form of Boltzmann-like distributions which in turn results in explicit pairwise enumeration of components in multicomponent mixtures. Recent hard-constrained neural networks relax this functional form but remain tied to pairwise enumeration through geometric projection. Here, we propose DeepThermoMix, a local-composition-based graph neural network that predicts multicom

Adaptive neighborhood aggregation graph neural network for early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

Early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is crucial for timely intervention but remains challenging due to subtle and heterogeneous brain alterations, particularly in the mild cognitive impairment (MCI) stage. To address this issue, we propose a pathology-aware Adaptive Neighborhood Aggregation Graph Neural Network (ANA-GNN) to model the brain as a dynamic and task-driven graph for multimodal AD classification. The framework integrates three synergistic components: an adaptive neighborhood aggregation module that aligns each node's receptive field with disease-specific heterogeneity, an imp
