Quantifying the impact of grasshoppers: an integrated approach using dynamic vegetation indices, red edge shift and biophysical changes for remote sensing assessment in typical steppe of China.

BACKGROUND: In conventional remote sensing monitoring, the quantitative estimation of vegetation damage caused by locust feeding has long been challenged by the spatiotemporal resolution limits of satellites, as well as a lack of understanding regarding the physiological characteristics of different locust species. To address this, cage experiments were conducted in a typical steppe region of northern China, with the primary grassland pest in the area, Oedaleus decorus asiaticus, as the study subject. RESULTS: Field experiments in Xilinhot revealed that vegetation indices were significantly m

Dietary Stress From Plant Secondary Metabolites Contributes to Grasshopper (Oedaleus asiaticus) Migration or Plague by Regulating Insect Insulin-Like Signaling Pathway.

Diets essentially affect the ecological distribution of insects, and may contribute to or even accelerate pest plague outbreaks. The grasshopper, Oedaleus asiaticus B-Bienko (OA), is a persistent pest occurring in northern Asian grasslands. Migration and plague of this grasshopper is tightly related to two specific food plants, Stipa krylovii Roshev and Leymus chinensis (Trin.) Tzvel. However, how these diets regulate and contribute to plague is not clearly understood. Ecological studies have shown that L. chinensis is detrimental to OA growth due to the presence of high secondary metabolites,

Cytogenetic markers reveal a reinforcement of variation in the tension zone between chromosome races in the brachypterous grasshopper Podisma sapporensis Shir. on Hokkaido Island.

The cytogenetic characteristics of the grasshopper Podisma sapporensis (two races 2n = 23♂ X0/XX and 2n = 22♂ neo-XY/neo-XX) were analysed through fluorescence in situ hybridization with rDNA and telomeric DNA probes, C-banding, fluorochrome and silver staining. For the first time, samples from the neighbourhood of a hybrid population (i.e., Mikuni Pass population) were studied. Our results indicated a significant degree of chromosomal differentiation between P. sapporensis races when comparing the number and position of the rDNA sites, as well as the heterochromatin composition and distributi

Discovery and taste mechanisms of novel umami peptides from edible grasshopper (Oxya chinensis sinuosa) based on machine learning, molecular docking and dynamics simulation.

This study aimed to reveal umami peptides from grasshopper, and then explored their umami perception mechanism and umami enhancement. Four potential umami peptides (GDRFL, NGWGDY, NVTY and VVNY) were isolated, characterized and screened from grasshopper protein hydrolysate through machine learning and in silico approaches. Subsequently, sensory evaluation and electronic tongue confirmed their umami taste with thresholds of 0.08-0.25 mg/mL, which were lower than that of monosodium glutamate (0.3 mg/mL). The potent umami taste of GDRFL and NGWGDY was mainly driven by their umami amino acid compo

Moderate Susceptibility to Subcutaneous Plague (Yersinia pestis) Challenge in Vaccine-Treated and Untreated Sonoran Deer Mice (Peromyscus maniculatus sonoriensis) and Northern Grasshopper Mice (Onychomys leucogaster).

The variable response of wild mice to Yersinia pestis infection, the causative agent of plague, has generated much speculation concerning their role in the ecology of this potentially lethal disease. Researchers have questioned the means by which Y. pestis is maintained in nature and also sought methods for managing the disease. Here we assessed the efficacy of a new tool, the sylvatic plague vaccine (SPV), in wild-caught northern grasshopper mice (Onychomys leucogaster) and commercially acquired Sonoran deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus sonoriensis). More than 40% of the animals survived a su

Development, ultrastructure, natural occurrence, and molecular characterization of Liebermania patagonica n. g., n. sp., a microsporidian parasite ot the grasshopper Tristira magellanica (Orthoptera: Tristiridae).

A new microsporidium, Liebermannia patagonica n. gen., n. sp., is described from midgut and gastric caecum epithelial cells of Tristira magellanica, an apterous grasshopper species of southern Patagonia, Argentina. L.patagonica is diplokaryotic, apansporoblastic, homosporous, and polysporoblastic. Transitional (from merogony to sporogony) stages and sporonts of L. patagonica were surrounded by host rough endoplasmic reticulum. The ovocylindrical spores measured 2.9 +/- 0.09 x 1.2 +/- 0.04 microm (fresh, n = 50), and they had an isofilar polar filament of only three coils and a cluster of tubul

Kinematics and energetics of the desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria) when jumping from compliant surfaces.

Animals often leap from substrates that give way under them, such as leaves, soft ground or flexible branches. This provides an added complexity for latch-mediated spring-actuated (LaMSA) jumping animals because the spring-loaded system often works so quickly that neural feedback cannot adjust for errors caused by a yielding substrate. We studied a LaMSA jumper, the grasshopper, to determine how the mechanical properties of a substrate giving way under them would affect the kinematics of the jump. We measured this by allowing grasshoppers to leap from two diving boards, a long one that could g

Geographic variation in body size and tegmen shape of the grasshopper Dichroplus elongatus (Orthoptera: Acrididae) from Central-West Argentina: morphological trait variation along environmental gradients.

How phenotype varies across geographic space constitutes a key question in current evolutionary biology. Species with widespread geographic ranges are helpful models for examining phenotype variation patterns. Here we examined body size and tegmen shape variation in 12 populations of widespread agricultural pest Dichroplus elongatus collected in Central-West Argentina. D. elongatus showed significant phenotypic variation. Combining linear and geometric morphometric techniques reveals differences in body size and tegmen shape between sexes. General linear mixed models (GLMMs) analyses showed th

Embryonic development of axon pathways in the Drosophila CNS. II. Behavior of pioneer growth cones.

We have identified the neurons that pioneer the major CNS axon tracts in the Drosophila embryo and determined their trajectory and fasciculation choices using serial section electron microscopy. Although Drosophila pioneer neurons make choices similar to those of their grasshopper homologs, there are interesting differences that reflect the much smaller nervous system size and the much faster rate of development characteristic of Drosophila. For example, where 2 longitudinal tracts are pioneered independently in grasshopper, only one is formed in Drosophila. This change is due to a change in f

Evidence for the involvement of an alternate rodent host in the dynamics of introduced plague in prairie dogs.

1. The introduction of plague to North America is a significant threat to colonies of prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus), a species of conservation concern in the Great Plains. Other small rodents are exposed to the causative agent, Yersinia pestis, during or after epizootics; yet, its effect on these rodents is not known, and their role in transmitting and maintaining plague in the absence of prairie dogs remains unclear. 2. We live-trapped small rodents and collected their fleas on 11 colonies before, during and after plague epizootics in Colorado, USA, from 2004 to 2006. Molecular genetic

Inferring host-parasite relationships using stable isotopes: implications for disease transmission and host specificity.

Identifying the roles of different hosts and vectors is a major challenge in the study of the ecology of diseases caused by multi-host pathogens. Intensive field studies suggested that grasshopper mice (Onychomys leucogaster) help spread the bacterium that causes plague (Yersinia pestis) in prairie dog colonies by sharing fleas with prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus); yet conclusive evidence that prairie dog fleas (Oropsylla hirsuta) feed on grasshopper mice is lacking. Using stable nitrogen isotope analysis, we determined that many blood-engorged O. hirsuta collected from wild grasshopper mi

Plant composition changes in a small-scale community have a large effect on the performance of an economically important grassland pest.

BACKGROUND: The grasshopper Oedaleus asiaticus Bey-Bienko (Acrididae: Oedipodinae) is a dominant and economically important pest that is widely distributed across the Mongolian plateau. This herbivore pest causes major damage to the grassland of the Inner Mongolian steppe in China. The population dynamics of herbivore pests is affected by grassland management practices (e.g., mowing and heavy livestock grazing) that alter plant community structures and stoichiometric characteristics. For example, O. asiaticus outbreak is closely associated with plant preference changes caused by nitrogen loss

Exposure of small rodents to plague during epizootics in black-tailed prairie dogs.

Plague, caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, causes die-offs of colonies of prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus). It has been argued that other small rodents are reservoirs for plague, spreading disease during epizootics and maintaining the pathogen in the absence of prairie dogs; yet there is little empirical support for distinct enzootic and epizootic cycles. Between 2004 and 2006, we collected blood from small rodents captured in colonies in northern Colorado before, during, and for up to 2 yr after prairie dog epizootics. We screened 1,603 blood samples for antibodies to Y. pestis, usin

Defensive Venoms: Is Pain Sufficient for Predator Deterrence?

Pain, though unpleasant, is adaptive in calling an animal's attention to potential tissue damage. A long list of animals representing diverse taxa possess venom-mediated, pain-inducing bites or stings that work by co-opting the pain-sensing pathways of potential enemies. Typically, such venoms include toxins that cause tissue damage or disrupt neuronal activity, rendering painful stings honest indicators of harm. But could pain alone be sufficient for deterring a hungry predator? Some venomologists have argued "no"; predators, in the absence of injury, would "see through" the bluff of a painfu

Behavioral responses of Schistocerca americana (Orthoptera: Acrididae) to Azadirex (neem)-treated host plants.

Azadirex (azadirachtin and other biologically active extracts from neem trees) has been shown to have considerable potential to be used in integrated pest management systems based on its growth regulator/insecticide properties. Less well known are the antifeedant properties. The feeding-deterrent properties of a commercial azadirex formulation (Azatrol EC) were evaluated using both no-choice and choice tests, the American grasshopper, Schistocerca americana (Drury), and four host plants [savoy cabbage, Brassica oleracea variety capitata L.; cos (romaine) lettuce, Lactuca sativa variety longifo

Naturally occurring secondary nutritional hyperparathyroidism in cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis) from central Texas.

Naturally occurring secondary nutritional hyperparathyroidism is described in the nestlings of two colonies of cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis) from Central Texas (Bryan and San Antonio, Texas, USA). Nestlings from a third colony (Waco, Texas, USA) were collected in a subsequent year for comparison. Birds from the first two colonies consistently had severe osteopenia and associated curving deformities and folding fractures of their long bones. These birds also had reduced bone ash, increased osteoclasia, a marked decrease in osteoblast activity, variable lengthening and shortening of the hypertro

Ecological risk assessment at the food web scale: A case study of a mercury contaminated oilfield.

Mercury, particularly methylmercury, can accumulate through food webs and generate high risks for species at higher trophic levels. Inorganic mercury can be methylated into the organic species methylmercury if suitable reducing conditions exist, for example, in hotspots like oilfields. We developed a conceptual model to conduct an ecological risk assessment based on the food web structure of the Shengli oilfield area, China. The model can identify species at risk and elucidate the sources of risks according to their diet. A risk rating criteria was developed based on the food web structure to
