Holocene pollen and phytolith dataset from the Xinglong site in the Bashang Grassland, northern China.

This dataset comprises pollen and phytolith records obtained from the Xinglong site (42.09°N, 114.61°E) in the Bashang Grassland, northern China. The data were systematically collected from a 340 cm sediment profile (TG1E) containing well-stratified deposits from the Paleolithic-Neolithic transition to mid-Neolithic period (13,500-5000 cal. a BP). 70 contiguous samples were taken in 5 cm interval for multi-proxy analyses. The dataset provides fundamental material for reconstructing early-mid Holocene environment and human-environment interactions. Pollen extraction followed standardized HCl-Na

Sod farms drive habitat selection of a migratory grassland shorebird during a critical stopover period.

Migratory shorebirds are one of the fastest declining groups of North American avifauna. Yet, relatively little is known about how these species select habitat during migration. We explored the habitat selection of Buff-breasted Sandpipers (Calidris subruficollis) during spring and fall migration through the Texas Coastal Plain, a major stopover region for this species. Using tracking data from 118 birds compiled over 4 years, we found Buff-breasted Sandpipers selected intensively managed crops such as sod and short-stature crop fields, but generally avoided rangeland and areas near trees and

Dose-dependent in vivo effects of formulated moxidectin on seedling emergence of temperate grassland species.

Sheep function as effective endozoochorous seed vectors in grasslands. Recent laboratory-based studies showed that this important function can be impaired by macrocyclic lactone anthelmintics, which are used to control parasites and enter into the environment mainly via faeces; however, there is a lack of in vivo studies. We conducted a seed-feeding experiment with sheep that included four temperate grassland species from four different families (Achillea ptarmica, Asteraceae; Agrostis capillaris, Poaceae; Dianthus deltoides, Caryophyllaceae; Plantago lanceolata, Plantaginaceae). A series of t

Drought-Induced Accumulation of Root Exudates Supports Post-drought Recovery of Microbes in Mountain Grassland.

Droughts strongly affect carbon and nitrogen cycling in grasslands, with consequences for ecosystem productivity. Therefore, we investigated how experimental grassland communities interact with groups of soil microorganisms. In particular, we explored the mechanisms of the drought-induced decoupling of plant photosynthesis and microbial carbon cycling and its recovery after rewetting. Our aim was to better understand how root exudation during drought is linked to pulses of soil microbial activity and changes in plant nitrogen uptake after rewetting. We set up a mesocosm experiment on a meadow

Soil Moisture and Prey Life Cycles Promote Seasonal Dietary Shift in a Grassland-Breeding Migratory Shorebird.

Understanding the dietary flexibility of migratory birds is essential for predicting their resilience to rapid environmental changes. For the continental black-tailed godwit (Limosa limosa limosa), precise knowledge of seasonal diets and the underlying causes of prey selection on their breeding grounds has remained limited. This is largely due to challenges of observing foraging in tall vegetation and the rapid digestion of soft-bodied prey. We utilized DNA metabarcoding of 207 fecal samples to describe the diet of flock-foraging godwits in southwest Friesland, the Netherlands, during pre-nest

Elevated CO2, warming and drought differentially impact reproductive and vegetative economic traits in two grassland species.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Since the Industrial Revolution, rising atmospheric CO2, warming and more frequent droughts have significantly impacted ecosystems. While the responses of leaf functional traits to these climate change factors have been widely studied, reproductive traits remain relatively understudied, despite their key role in the diversification and distribution of flowering plants. Here we investigated how elevated CO2, warming, drought and their interactions affect floral, leaf and seed traits in two model grassland species. We also examined how these factors influence trait coordinat

Soil organic carbon stability and its influencing factors during grassland enclosure on the Loess Plateau, China.

Taking grasslands with different closure durations (13, 22, 30, and 39 years) on the Loess Plateau as the research subjects, with grazed grasslands serving as the control, we explored the characteristics and regulating factors of changes in SOC mineralization (Cmin), temperature sensitivity (Q10), SOC turnover rate (K), and turnover time (T) during grassland enclosure, using the space-for-time substitution method. The results showed that Cmin significantly increased with enclosure duration, reaching 2.1 times that of grazed grassland after 39 years of enclosure. Q10 significantly decreased wit

DMN-YOLO: A Lightweight Small-Object Detector for Multi-Species Animal Detection in UAV Grassland Imagery.

To meet the requirements of accurate multi-class animal detection and model lightweighting in UAV-based grazing monitoring, this study presents DMN-YOLO, an efficient detector built upon YOLO11n. In particular, a lightweight downsampling module, DSDown, is introduced to alleviate the loss of detailed features of tiny targets during downsampling under complex grassland backgrounds, thereby improving the preservation of edge, texture, and local structural information. Meanwhile, a MACFPN multi-scale feature fusion structure is designed to handle large scale variations and feature confusion among

The Brazilian Cerrado through herbarium lenses: vegetation structure and composition across savanna, forest, and grassland formations.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The Cerrado is a biogeographic domain located in the heart of South America. Of continental proportions, it harbors remarkable plant diversity across numerous vegetation types. In recent years, the Cerrado has received increasing attention due to its central role in providing ecosystem services. This growing interest, however, has also led to confusion about its vegetation, with different sectors of society interpreting its plant communities in diverse ways. To clarify Cerrado's vegetation patterns, this study provides a decentralized synthesis based on over 600,000 herbar

Plant biomass and macro- and micronutrients jointly drive top-heavy arthropod trophic pyramids in grassland monocultures.

Identifying the key drivers of changes in species biomass, abundance, and distribution across trophic levels in terrestrial ecosystems represents a fundamental challenge in ecology. The shape of trophic pyramids-reflecting the relative biomass or abundance of various trophic groups, such as herbivores, omnivores, predators, and parasitoids-is anticipated to vary with both the quantity and nutritional quality of plants. However, a comprehensive understanding of how these factors influence the shape of trophic pyramids in grassland ecosystems remains elusive. In this study, we utilize replicated

Grass silica short cell phytoliths in Pyrenean subalpine grasslands: taxonomy and palaeoecological relevance.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Subalpine grasslands of the Central Pyrenees (1600-2300 m a.s.l.) are semi-natural ecosystems shaped by millennia of pastoral land use. Reconstructing their long-term dynamics requires proxies with higher taxonomic resolution than Poaceae pollen. Grass silica short cell phytoliths (GSSCPs) offer this potential. We aim to build a taxonomically broad, ecologically grounded reference collection and assess the diagnostic value of GSSCP assemblages across grass lineages and habitats. METHODS: We inventoried 251 grass species and selected 66 native taxa to maximize phylogenetic

Contrasts in niche breadth and its drivers between soil microbes and plants in alpine grasslands.

Niche breadth reflects the extent to which taxa or communities can tolerate environmental variations, indicating their potential to respond to environmental changes. However, it remains unclear whether micro- and macro-organisms share similar patterns of niche breadth along the same environmental gradients, and which environmental filters regulates niche breadth across different trophic levels. In this study, 180 soil samples were collected from the northeastern and central Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. By integrating microbiome sequencing with plant community surveys, we quantified niche breadth for

Recurrent heatwaves reduce production but reveal species mixture‑mediated resistance and recovery in grasslands.

Current and future heatwaves threaten temperate grasslands as they impair plant temperature regulation, photosynthesis, and eventually lead to production losses. Species mixture could mitigate the negative effects of heatwaves as documented for drought. Our main objective was to test the effect of species mixture on grassland responses to heatwaves by comparing mixtures with monocultures. We conducted a greenhouse experiment to simulate four heatwave treatments: i) control ii) two mild heatwaves, iii) a severe heatwave, and iv) recurrent scenario combining the mild and severe heatwaves. We ana

Health and performance of fattening pigs reared in grassland and agroforestry systems in a temperate maritime climate.

Outdoor pig production is often seen as more welfare-friendly than indoor production. However, unless restricted to concrete runs, it is often carried out on grassland. This offers little protection from adverse climatic conditions and grassland is susceptible to poaching during rainy periods. Both can be expected to negatively impact pig health, whereas the use of wooded areas can limit such issues as trees provide shelter and promote water evaporation. To investigate this, we compared the health of pigs kept in grassland and agroforestry plots from 8 weeks of age until slaughter. Two batches

Seasonal Emission Factors from Rangeland Prescribed Burns in the Kansas Flint Hills Grasslands.

Operational-sized prescribed grassland burns at three mid-West U.S. locations and ten 1-ha-sized prescribed grassland burns were conducted in the Flint Hills of Kansas to determine emission factors and their potential seasonal effects. Ground-, aerostat-, and unmanned aircraft system-based platforms were used to sample plume emissions for a range of gaseous and particulate pollutants. The ten co-located, 1-ha-sized plots allowed for testing five plots in the spring and five in the late summer, allowing for control of vegetation type, biomass loading, climate history, and land use. The operatio

The diversity of iron acquisition strategies of calcifuge plant species from dry acidic grasslands.

Although the calcifuge plant species existing in dry acidic grasslands are believed to be prone to iron (Fe)-dependent limitations, little is known about their susceptibility and reaction to pH-dependent Fe starvation. Therefore, the present study examines the effects of contrasting soils (acidic Podzol vs alkaline Rendzina) and Fe supplementation (Fe-HBED) on alkaline substratum (5 and 25 μmol Fe-HBED kg-1 soil). Five calcifuge dicotyledonous plant species (Alyssum montanum L., Antennaria dioica (L.) Gaertn., Hypochaeris radicata L., Jasione montana L. and Potentilla arenaria Borkh.) were tes

[An evaluation of potential occurrence of grasshopper plague in Xianghuangqi grasslands of Inner Mongolia, North China].

In this study, the key climatic factors in spawning, overwintering, and hatching periods of grasshopper were taken as the main factors to establish the climatic suitability index of potential occurrence of grasshopper (POG) in Inner Mongolia, and an evaluation was conducted on the climatic suitability of POG in Xianghuangqi County of Inner Mongolia in 2010. Based on the field investigation data collected in early and mid July 2010, seven relatively stable habitat factors including elevation, aspect, soil type, soil sand content, vegetation type, vegetation coverage, and land cover type were se
