Radiographic detection of mobilizable lung water: the gravitational shift test.

A radiographic method for detecting excessive lung water in patients with pulmonary infiltrates of uncertain cause is described. The gravitational shift test uses bedside frontal films before and after prolonged lateral decubitus positioning. Excess lung water is identified by detecting a shift in infiltrate to the dependent lung while the opposite side clears or remains stable. The test was evaluated in 33 patients with infiltrates of well defined etiology. Twelve patients had heart failure or fluid overload (edema): 14 had pulmonary infection or parenchymal damage (inflammation); and seven h

Quantum Sensing of Gravitational Frame Dragging with a Superfluid ^{4}He Gyrometer.

We propose a laboratory-scale experiment to locally measure the general relativistic frame-dragging effect on Earth using the macroscopic quantum properties of a novel superfluid ^{4}He single Josephson junction gyrometer. We derive the frame-dragging and related geodetic and Thomas effects in the superfluid gyrometer and present a procedure for their experimental measurement. We compute the expected thermal noise floor and find that very high sensitivity can be expected at millikelvin temperatures, where near-future Josephson junctions using nanoporous 2D materials are expected to operate. Thick Lunar Crust Amplifies Deci-Hertz Gravitational-Wave Signals.

Gravitational waves (GWs) in the 0.01∼1  Hz band encode unique signatures of the early Universe and merging compact objects, but they are beyond the reach of existing observatories. Theoretical models suggest that the Moon could act as a resonant detector, but the unknown influence of its rugged surface and heterogeneous interior poses a challenge to the accurate modeling of its response. Here, we address this long-standing uncertainty by constructing the first high-resolution, two-dimensional model of the lunar GW response, more realistic than previous ones. We achieve this by combining high-

Discovering μHz Gravitational Waves and Ultralight Dark Matter with Binary Resonances.

In the presence of a weak gravitational wave (GW) background, astrophysical binary systems act as high-quality resonators, with efficient transfer of energy and momentum between the orbit and a harmonic GW leading to potentially detectable orbital perturbations. In this Letter, we develop and apply a novel modeling and analysis framework that describes the imprints of GWs on binary systems in a fully time-resolved manner to study the sensitivity of lunar laser ranging, satellite laser ranging, and pulsar timing to both resonant and nonresonant GW backgrounds. We demonstrate that optimal data c

Formation of multiscale structures in a self-gravitating dusty plasma with matter current.

I investigate the formation of multiscale magnetic-field structures in a rotating, self-gravitating dusty plasma comprising electrons, ions, and charged dust grains. By incorporating the gravitomagnetic field, arising from mass currents in rotating astrophysical objects, into a three-component fluid model, I derive a triple-curl Beltrami equilibrium characterized by three distinct spatial scales. These scales emerge from the eigenvalues of a governing cubic equation, reflecting the combined effects of self-gravitation, rotation, and electromagnetic interactions. The model provides novel insigh

Adjustable differential pressure versus adjustable gravitational valves in pediatric hydrocephalus.

OBJECTIVE: Hydrocephalus in children is mostly treated with a CSF-diverting shunt system as a lifelong implant. Presently, a variety of shunt valves are available on the market, but there is a lack of evidence guiding valve type selection for the management of pediatric hydrocephalus. The aim of this study was to compare two shunt valve types in the treatment of pediatric hydrocephalus. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of synchronized patient databases was conducted at two pediatric neurosurgical centers. At one center, an adjustable differential pressure (aDP) valve with a fixed gravitation

A technical note on percutaneous fixation of trapezium fracture under gravitational traction.

Trapezium fractures rarely present as isolated fractures and warrant anatomical fixation to minimize post-traumatic arthritis. Fixation techniques reported include open approach to trapezium fracture and fixation, percutaneous fixation under image intensifier guidance or percutaneous arthroscopic fixation under gravitational traction. We have reported a novel method of percutaneous fixation of a trapezium Walker type IV coronal split fractures under gravitational traction and per-operative image intensifier guidance. Two percutaneous headless differential pitch screws were used for fixation, w

Acute Heart Failure, 90-Day Mortality, and Gravitational Ischemia in the Brain.

During the 90 days following hospitalization for acute heart failure, the ejection fraction and type of discharge medications have been shown in clinical trials to have little effect on mortality. We examined the recent literature addressing brain-related etiologies of sudden death following heart failure. Two mechanisms of sudden unexpected death have been suggested to possibly result from four significant influences on pathophysiology in the brain. The two causes of sudden death are (1) severe cardiac arrhythmia and (2) neurogenic pulmonary edema. They are both mediated through the brainstem

Medical Imaging Lesion Detection Based on Unified Gravitational Fuzzy Clustering.

We develop a swift, robust, and practical tool for detecting brain lesions with minimal user intervention to assist clinicians and researchers in the diagnosis process, radiosurgery planning, and assessment of the patient's response to the therapy. We propose a unified gravitational fuzzy clustering-based segmentation algorithm, which integrates the Newtonian concept of gravity into fuzzy clustering. We first perform fuzzy rule-based image enhancement on our database which is comprised of T1/T2 weighted magnetic resonance (MR) and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images to facilitat

Afferent and peripheral control of muscle fiber properties during gravitational unloading.

The present paper covers two series of the experiment studies performed in attempt to analyze the support-triggered cellular mechanisms, controlling the maintenance of tonic muscle fiber characteristics. Exposure to 7 day dry immersion induced significant decline of the human soleus single fiber peak isometric tension and the Ca(2+)-sensitivity of myofibrils. 30-40% losses of the relative content of titin and nebulin were found after immersion. The application of the plantar support stimulation device prevented all these alterations. In the second experimental series the treatment of hindlimb

Orthostatic intolerance: different abnormalities in the neural sympathetic response to a gravitational stimulus.

In this paper we shall focus on the different abnormalities in the neural sympathetic response to a gravitational stimulus, characterising syndromes with symptoms of orthostatic intolerance. In Vaso vagal Syncope, an increase or a reduction of cardiac and vascular sympathetic modulation have been described in occasional and habitual fainters, respectively. Pure Autonomic Failure (PAF) is characterized by a global cardiovascular denervation. Accordingly, the spectral markers of cardiac and vascular sympathetic modulation are absent or reduced. However, a concomitant vagal diminished activity is

Structural and functional asymmetry of the lower limb related to gravitational acceleration tolerance.

This study investigates the physiological effects of intensive physical training on femoral cartilage morphology and limb asymmetry in strength in air force cadets. Thirty male cadets were evaluated using ultrasonography to measure femoral cartilage thickness, isokinetic testing to assess knee flexor and extensor strength, and the functional movement screen (FMS) to examine movement patterns. Participants were divided into pass and fail groups based on the G test, a measure of gravitational acceleration tolerance. Cadets in the fail group exhibited significantly thinner cartilage in the medial

Evaluation of the efficacy and safety of gravitational therapy in a cohort of patients with systemic sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: The exposure to artificial gravity (AG) through human centrifugation is the basis of the treatment called gravity therapy (GT), in which the mechanical stimulation over the vessel wall, induces the synthesis and release of prostacyclin. It has been used for more than four decades in Uruguay in the treatment of different vascular-based pathologies. In patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) it has shown good benefits and excellent safety profile over the years. However, there is a lack of knowledge in the scientific community about GT and its results. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effe

The effect of bariatric surgery on gravitational loading and its impact on bone mass.

INTRODUCTION: Mechanical unloading associated with weight loss might be one of the main causes for bariatric surgery (BS) induced bone loss. However, no study has tested this hypothesis through objectively measured accelerometry-derived gravitational loading. We aimed to assess how gravitational loading changes following BS and how this correlates with bone mass losses. METHODS: Twenty-one patients submitted to gastric bypass were assessed before, 1, 6 and 12 months after BS for areal bone mineral density (BMD), calciotropic hormones, sclerostin, body composition and daily physical activity.

The evaluation of gravitational recognition in patients with spinocerebellar degeneration using Listing's plane.

Background: The thickness of Listing's plane accurately reflects gravitational recognition, constructed through the integration of visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive sensory input in the neural integrator of the central nervous system. Spinocerebellar degeneration (SCD) is a progressive degenerative disease mainly involving the cerebellum and brainstem that leads to destabilize the gravitational recognition, and may thicken thickening of Listing's plane. Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the gravitational recognition in response to positional change in patients with SCD, usin

Gravitational shunt units may cause under-drainage in bedridden patients.

OBJECTIVE: Implantation of a shunt in a hydrocephalic patient still carries a risk of complications such as over-drainage and under-drainage. Gravitational shunt units are especially designed to minimize the problem of over-drainage. Nevertheless, these valves carry a risk of under-drainage. The best choice of valve for a patient is still challenging. The purpose of this survey was to identify in which patients a gravitational shunt valve is liable to lead to under-drainage. METHODS: Patients with hydrocephalus entered prospectively into a data base were reviewed retrospectively. The patients

[The effectiveness of gravitational valves in the prevention of over-drainage in adult patients with hydrocephalus].

AIM: To evaluate the effect of gravitational valves on over-drainage in hydrocephalus in adults. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of the shunt systems placed in patients over the age of 18 years between 1998 and 2006. Patients were divided into two groups: non-GV group (without gravitational valve) and GV group (with a gravitational valve, Aesculap-Miethke 5/35). The complications that occurred during the first year following the placement of the shunt system were recorded. RESULTS: Of a total of 137 patients, 91 were from the non-GV group and 46 belonged to the GV gr

Prospects for detection of gravitational waves from intermediate-mass-ratio inspirals.

We explore prospects for detecting gravitational waves from stellar-mass compact objects spiraling into intermediate mass black holes (BHs) M approximately 50M to 350M) with ground-based observatories. We estimate a rate for such intermediate-mass-ratio inspirals of <or= 1-30 yr(-1) in Advanced LIGO. We show that if the central body is not a BH but its metric is stationary, axisymmetric, reflection symmetric and asymptotically flat, then the waves will likely be triperiodic, as for a BH. We suggest that the evolutions of the waves' three fundamental frequencies and of the complex amplitudes of
