Convergent innervations of mesencephalic trigeminal and vestibular nuclei neurons onto oculomotor and pre-oculomotor neurons-Tract tracing and triple labeling in rats.

In studies of vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), the horizontal VOR circuit is much clearer than vertical-torsional VOR. The circuit and mechanism of gravity-related vertical-torsional VOR is probably weak. "Somatosensory vestibular interaction" is a known extra source to facilitate VOR, and cervico-ocular reflex is a representative for torsional VOR compensation. Whereas, how the cervical afferents finally reach the oculomotor system is less documented. Actually, when the head tilts, which generates cervico-ocular reflex, not only the neck muscle is activated, but also the jaw muscle is stretched

Design, Development, and Laboratory Validation of a Low-Cost Multi-Sensor System for Bridge Structural Health Monitoring with Scour-Related Environmental Sensing.

This paper reports the design, development and laboratory validation of a low-cost multi-sensor system for bridge Structural Health Monitoring with complementary scour-related environmental sensing. The proposed sensing apparatus is intended for continuous dynamic (vibration-based) and quasi-static structural monitoring, in particular for bridge applications. It employs a distributed wired architecture comprising two custom printed circuit boards, BridgeWatch and EnvironMonitor. BridgeWatch nodes integrate MEMS accelerometers and gyroscopes, enabling acceleration measurements, quasi-static inc

Pathology of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo revisited.

The pathophysiology of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is not completely understood. Although the concept of degenerated otoconia transforming the posterior canal (PC) crista into a gravity-sensitive sense organ has gained popular support, several temporal bone (TB) series have revealed similar deposits in normal TBs, suggesting they are a normal change in the aging labyrinth. Furthermore, some TBs from patients with BPPV do not contain particles in the posterior canal. Five TBs from patients with BPPV were studied quantitatively and qualitatively. A small PC cupular deposit was fo

Sensory Biology of Starfish-With Emphasis on Recent Discoveries in their Visual Ecology.

Asteroidea, starfish, constitutes a major part of the macrobenthos in most marine environments. Being members of the echinoderms, they have a nervous system with no well-defined central nervous system. Accordingly, starfish are assumed to pick up rather limited information from the surroundings, and it is also often assumed that most of their behaviors are guided by olfaction. Here, the sensory biology of starfish is reviewed in order to evaluate these assumptions. There is a vast amount of behavioral data dealing with mechanoreception, chemoreception, and combinations of the two (chemosensory

Microgravity Modulates Effects of Chemotherapeutic Drugs on Cancer Cell Migration.

Microgravity or the condition of apparent weightlessness causes bone, muscular and immune system dysfunctions in astronauts following spaceflights. These organ and system-level dysfunctions correlate with changes induced at the single cell level both by simulated microgravity on earth as well as microgravity conditions in outer space (as in the international space station). Reported changes in single bone cells, muscle cells and white blood cells include structural/morphological abnormalities, changes in gene expression, protein expression, metabolic pathways and signaling pathways, suggesting

Opto-mechanical design of long-strip space reflector applied to satellite perpendicular orbit scanning.

Perpendicular orbit scanning is a novel satellite imaging mechanism proposed in recent years, which greatly enhances the efficiency of remote sensing imaging. However, its ultra-high-speed scanning requirements can only be fulfilled by using line-scan Charge Coupled Devices (CCDs) and long-strip space mirrors. So far, most common rectangular mirrors have a length-to-width ratio of no more than 3, employing a universal single-point or non-collinear three-point support design, with lack of further optimization exploration. Moreover, beyond static gravity and thermal loads, the mirror is required

Determination of the threshold of gravity for inducing kinetosis in fish: a drop-tower experiment.

It has been repeatedly shown earlier that some fish of a given batch reveal motion sickness (a kinetosis) at the transition from 1 g to microgravity. In the course of parabolic aircraft flight experiments, it has been demonstrated that kinetosis susceptibility is correlated with asymmetric inner ear otoliths (i.e., differently weighed statoliths on the right and the left side of the head) or with genetically predispositioned malformed cells within the sensory epithelia of the inner ear. Hitherto, the threshold of gravity perception for inducing kinetotic behaviour as well as the relative impor

Frequency effect of 0.35-1.0 Hz horizontal translational oscillation on motion sickness and the somatogravic illusion.

BACKGROUND: Low frequency translational oscillation can provoke motion sickness in land vehicles, ships and aircraft. HYPOTHESIS: Nauseogenicity should decrease towards the higher frequencies. METHODS: Some 12 subjects were exposed to horizontal sinusoidal motion (3.6 m.s-2 peak) at four different frequencies 0.35, 0.50, 0.70, and 1.00 Hz, at 1-week intervals, latin square order. Subjects were seated in the upright position; motion was through the head-body X-axis. Motion was stopped (motion endpoint) at moderate nausea or after 30 min. RESULTS: The proportion of subjects experiencing moder

Perception of spatial orientation in spasmodic torticollis. Part 2: The visual vertical.

Twenty-nine patients with idiopathic spasmodic torticollis (ST) and matched normal control subjects were asked to align a target line to perceived earth vertical [visual vertical (VV)]. Settings were made against a whole-field random-dot background that was either stationary or rotating around the line of sight, and subjects performed the task upright and lying horizontally on their sides. Normal subjects were tested both head upright and after assuming a voluntary head tilt. Patients with ST set the VV close to true upright with a minimal deviation toward tilt of the head in contrast to norma

Gravitactic signal transduction elements in Astasia longa investigated during parabolic flights.

Euglena gracilis and its close relative Astasia longa show a pronounced negative gravitactic behavior. Many experiments revealed that gravitaxis is most likely mediated by an active physiological mechanism. The goal of the present study was to examine elements in the sensory transduction by means of inhibitors of gravitaxis and the intracellular calcium concentration during short microgravity periods. During the course of six parabolic flights (ESA 31th parabolic flight campaign and DLR 6th parabolic flight campaign) the effects of trifluoperazine (calmodulin inhibitor), caffeine (phosphodiest

Age-dependent vestibular cingulate-cerebral network underlying gravitational perception: a cross-sectional multimodal study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The cingulate gyrus (CG) is a frequently studied yet not wholly understood area of the human cerebrum. Previous studies have implicated CG in different adaptive cognitive-emotional functions and fascinating or debilitating symptoms. We describe an unusual loss of gravity perception/floating sensation in consecutive persons with drug-resistant epilepsy undergoing electrical cortical stimulation (ECS), network analysis, and network robustness mapping. METHODS: Using Intracranial-EEG, Granger causality analysis, cortico-cortical evoked potentials, and fMRI, we explicat

Design and Testing of a Flexible Inclinometer Probe for Model Tests of Landslide Deep Displacement Measurement.

The physical model test of landslides is important for studying landslide structural damage, and parameter measurement is key in this process. To meet the measurement requirements for deep displacement in landslide physical models, an automatic flexible inclinometer probe with good coupling and large deformation capacity was designed. The flexible inclinometer probe consists of several gravity acceleration sensing units that are protected and positioned by silicon encapsulation, all the units are connected to a 485-comunication bus. By sensing the two-axis tilt angle, the direction and magnitu

The gravity of JUPITER (Justification for the Use of Statins in Primary Prevention: An Intervention Trial Evaluating Rosuvastatin).

In the recently published Justification for the Use of Statins in Primary Prevention: An Intervention Trial Evaluating Rosuvastatin (JUPITER) study, a large, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, rosuvastatin proved to be safe and remarkably effective in the setting of primary prevention. In patients without coronary heart disease or diabetes, with a baseline low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) level < 130 mg/dL and a C-reactive protein (CRP) > or = 2mg/L, a statin-induced LDL-C reduction of 50% reduced serious cardiac events by about 50%, including in women and the elderly, and also l

Cerebellar Degeneration Increases Visual Influence on Dynamic Estimates of Verticality.

Our perception of verticality relies on combining sensory information from multiple sources. Neuronal recordings in animals implicate the cerebellum in the process, yet disease of the human cerebellum was not found to affect this perception. Here we show that a perceptual disturbance of verticality is indeed present in people with a genetically determined and pure form of cerebellar degeneration (spinocerebellar ataxia type 6; SCA 6), but is only revealed under dynamic visual conditions. Participants were required to continuously orient a visually displayed bar to vertical while the bar angle

The critical role of velocity storage in production of motion sickness.

We propose that motion sickness is mediated through the orientation properties of velocity storage in the vestibular system that tend to align eye velocity produced by the angular vestibulo-ocular reflex (aVOR) with gravito-inertial acceleration (GIA). (GIA is the sum of the linear accelerations acting on the head. In the absence of translational accelerations, gravity is the GIA.) We further postulate that motion sickness produced by cross-coupled vestibular stimulation can be characterized by a metric composed of the disparity between the axis of eye rotation and the GIA, the strength of the

[Epidemiological aspects in occupational neurology. Investigational methodology]].

INTRODUCTION: In the working population, unsatisfactory working conditions (in the broadest sense) may cause effects whose gravity depends mainly on the characteristics of exposure and the general condition of the individual. DEVELOPMENT: These effects may, in practice, be classified as occupational accidents and professional illness (both legal concepts), illnesses related to work, diminished quality of life and effects on offspring. Agents as varied as head injuries and metals are known to cause from loss of memory or behavior disorders to chronic toxic encephalopathy or Parkinsonism. There

Accidental ingestion of magnetic foreign body in a pediatric patient: A potentially fatal attraction.

Foreign body ingestion is one of the most common pediatric emergencies. As part of their cognitive development, infants and toddlers are extremely curious and constantly explore their surroundings through their senses, namely taste. The ubiquity of toys containing magnetic elements consecutively meant an increase in the cases of children ingesting said magnets. While most ingested foreign bodies, including a single magnet, will spontaneously traverse the gastrointestinal tract without problems, some may give rise to grave and potentially life-threatening complications; the latter is often seen

A frequency-dependent phase-transition bioelectronic device with in-situ signal-filtering and Janus-adhesive capabilities for low-artifact sensing and tendon repair.

Mechanical and electrical mismatches exist at bioelectronic interfaces and tissue interfaces under complex environments, which easily lead to signal artifacts and adhesive residues. As a result, it is difficult to achieve both high sensitivity and anti-interference performance in bioelectronic interfaces. Inspired by multiple biological systems, this work proposes a multi-scale biomimetic construction strategy (JAH). An ionic-electronic hybrid conductive hydrogel with frequency-dependent phase transition is designed, and a Janus structure is constructed. In this way, two core functions, in-sit
