Mercury in Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) populations from Greenland.

Mercury concentrations were determined in muscle tissue of lake resident and anadromous populations of Arctic char in Greenland. Mercury in lake sediment, and in soil and humus from the surrounding area were also determined in the main localities. Fish length and dry weight were shown to be important covariables, which have to be taken into account when comparing mercury levels between populations. Variations in fat content did not contribute further to the differing mercury concentrations. Mercury concentrations in lake sediments, humus from around the lakes and resident populations of Arctic

Promoting equitable research: What Greenland teaches us about research ethics.

Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland) is increasingly becoming a site for international research to examine global climate change, biodiversity, deposits of rare earth elements, and various existing health disparities. Yet, there is no comprehensive code of ethical guidelines for responsible and culturally centered research there. International researchers conducting research in Kalaallit Nunaat are bound by research ethics regulations governed their home countries and institutions, but these are varied and, perhaps most importantly, were established independently of Kalaallit (Greenlanders). Consequen

Patterns in contacts with primary health care centres in Greenland.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the activity within the primary health care (PHC) in Greenland by identifying the patterns of all registered contacts made by patients in 2021, and to compare the most frequently used types of contacts and diagnostic codes in Nuuk to the rest of Greenland. The study was designed as a cross-sectional register study using data from the national electronic medical records (EMR) and diagnostic codes from the ICPC-2-system. In 2021, 83.7% (46,522) of the Greenlandic population were in contact with the PHC, resulting in 335,494 registered contacts. The majority

Examination of hearing loss among school-aged children in Greenland.

BACKGROUND: The highest prevalence of chronic suppurative otitis media is seen among children in Greenland. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of hearing loss among school children in Sisimiut, the second-largest city in Greenland. MATERIAL AND METHOD: All 423 children from 5th to 10th grade from the two schools in Sisimiut and the nearby settlements were invited to participate. Participants filled out a questionnaire at home with their parents before ear-examination and audiometry. Risk factors for hearing loss and otitis media (OM) related otoscopy findings were ana

Risk factors for Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection among children in Greenland.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the risk factors for Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection (MTI) among Greenlandic children for the purpose of identifying those at highest risk of infection. METHODS: Between 2005 and 2007, 1797 Greenlandic schoolchildren in five different areas were tested for MTI with an interferon gamma release assay (IGRA) and a tuberculin skin test (TST). Parents or guardians were surveyed using a standardized self-administered questionnaire to obtain data on crowding in the household, parents' educational level and the child's health status. Demographic data for each child--i.e. pa

Population-based survey of invasive bacterial diseases, Greenland, 1995-2004.

Invasive bacterial disease occurs frequently among native populations in the Arctic. Although a variety of bacteria are involved in invasive bacterial disease in Greenland, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and other staphylococci are responsible for most cases (69%); incidence varies according to region and ethnicity.

Human antibody recognition of Anisakidae and Trichinella spp. in Greenland.

High levels of total IgE are observed among children in Greenland. To evaluate the extent to which Anisakidae and Trichinella spp. contribute to the high total IgE level, an ELISA and a western blot were developed for the detection of IgG antibodies to Anisakidae, based on excretory/secretory antigens from Anisakidae larvae. Western blots with Anisakidae and Trichinella antigens discriminated between Anisakidae and Trichinella infections, enabling cross-reactivity between the two parasite infections to be eliminated. Serum samples from 1012 children in Greenland were analysed for specific anti

Strategy for decentralised prevention of angle closure glaucoma in Greenland.

In 1962 a blindness survey showed glaucomas to be responsible for 64% of all blindness in Greenland. In 1968 primary angle closure glaucoma was found to be the major glaucoma problem. Population studies using gonioscopy, optical anterior chamber depth, corneal thickness, diameter- and curvature measurements as well as ultrasound biometry were gradually performed. Prevalence was estimated at 5.1% in women and 1.6% in men aged 40+. Main findings were eye traits associated with increased risk of angle closure glaucoma: shallow anterior chamber depth and small corneal diameters. A high heritabilit

Trypsin from Greenland cod, Gadus ogac. Isolation and comparative properties.

Trypsin(ogen) was isolated from the pyloric ceca of Greenland cod. Greenland cod trypsin catalyzed hydrolysis of N alpha-benzoyl-DL-arginine p-nitroanilide, tosyl arginine methyl ester and protein and was inhibited by the serine protease inhibitor PMSF and other well-known trypsin inhibitors. Greenland cod trypsin was more stable at alkaline pH than at acid pH; and was inactivated by relatively low thermal treatment. Like other trypsins, the enzyme was rich in potential acidic amino acid residues but poor in basic amino acid residues and had a molecular weight of 23,500; but it had less potent

Multiple Sclerosis in the Greenlandic population. A nationwide cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The Global Burden of Disease Group modelled a surprisingly high prevalence of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in the Greenlandic population in 2016 of 290 per 100,000, higher than that in Denmark, a high-risk country of MS. OBJECTIVE: Obtain accurate data on the burden (prevalence and incidence rates) of MS in Greenland, 1973 - 2014, overall and according to ethnicity. METHODS: Greenlandic prevalence and incidence rates were estimated using validated data from the Danish Multiple Sclerosis Registry (Greenlandic citizens suspected of MS were until 2014 supposed to be transferred to Denmar

The prevalence and disease course of autoimmune liver diseases in Greenland.

Autoimmune liver diseases are rare serious diseases causing chronic inflammation and fibrosis in the liver parenchyma and bile ducts. Yet, the prevalence and burden of autoimmune liver diseases are largely unexplored in Arctic native populations. We investigated the prevalence and management of autoimmune liver diseases in Greenland using nationwide cross-sectional register data and subsequent medical chart reviews validating diagnoses and extracting liver histology examinations and medical treatments. The overall prevalence of autoimmune liver diseases in Greenland was 24.6 per 100,000 (95% C

Mortality in Greenlanders with chronic hepatitis B virus infection.

In-depth reviewing of all medical records and clinical databases concluded a 7-year shorter lifespan among Greenlanders infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV) compared with non-infected. Mortality did not associate with liver disease or any other specific disease entity. A possible mechanism for the reduced lifespan is subclinical inflammation that may be augmented by chronic viral infection. We hypothesized that chronic HBV infection contributes to this process causing a reduced life span. We added measurement of two markers of inflammation to the 10-year follow-up on our study of HBV among 50

Normative data on cardiovascular autonomic function in Greenlandic Inuit.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes is increasing among Greenlandic Inuit; however, the prevalence of cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) is yet unknown. The assessment of CAN requires an ability to differentiate between normal and abnormal. The aim was to establish normative reference data of cardiovascular autonomic function in Greenlandic Inuit. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, cardiovascular autonomic function was evaluated in participants without diabetes during the Greenlandic Population Study 2018 and in the town Qasigiannguit in 2020. Assessment included cardiovasc

Cancer in Greenlandic Inuit 1973-1997: a cohort study.

The increasing westernization of the Arctic countries may influence the very particular cancer profile of these populations. Our objective was to investigate the development in cancer incidence from 1973 to 1997 in a large and well-defined Inuit population in Greenland. Greenland is part of the Danish Kingdom, and population statistics covering both countries are available from the same registry resource. Data from the Danish Civil Registration System and from the Danish Cancer Registry were used to calculate age-standardized cancer incidence rates for the periods 1973-1987 and 1988-1997 for p

Sucrose malabsorption in children: a report of thirty-one Greenlanders.

Thirty-one children with sucrose malabsorption are reported. All had a flat blood sugar curve after sucrose ingestion but a normal one after monosaccharides. Seventy-five percent were malnourished and 11 were dehydrated at admission to hospital. Seven had to have intravenous rehydration. After institution of a sucrose-free diet, the symptoms disappeared and the patients gained weight. Eighteen had had symptoms for greater than 1 year, 13 for greater than 2 years, and 7 for greater than 5 years before their cause was discovered. Familial occurrence of sucrose malabsorption was shown in three to

Potential factors contributing to extreme longevity in the Greenland shark.

The Greenland shark (Somniosus microcephalus) is a deep-sea vertebrate inhabiting the cold waters of the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean and is renowned for its exceptional longevity, with individuals estimated to live for more than 400 years. It has also been proposed as a candidate species exhibiting negligible senescence. This narrative review synthesizes current knowledge on the biological mechanisms that may contribute to this phenotype. Potential contributing factors include its extreme environment, low metabolic rate and remarkably late sexual maturation, all of which may reduce cumulat

The visual system of the longest-living vertebrate, the Greenland shark.

The Greenland shark (Somniosus microcephalus) is the longest-living vertebrate and inhabits the exceptionally dim and cold waters of the Arctic deep sea. Due to its extreme lifespan, harsh environmental conditions, and prevalent corneal parasitisation, the Greenland shark has previously been thought to have impaired or degenerated vision. Here, we present genomic, transcriptomic, histological and functional evidence that the Greenland shark retains an intact visual system well-adapted for life in dim light. Histology and in vitro opsin expression revealed visual adaptations typical of deep-sea
