Perceived opportunities and risks of using deepfake technology in grief treatment: a qualitative study among Dutch bereaved people and mental health care workers.

Background: Deepfake technology, capable of simulating realistic representations of deceased people, is receiving growing attention as a potential technological tool in grief treatment. While its use has been explored in trauma treatment, its application in grief treatment remains unstudied. Objective: We examined how Dutch bereaved people and mental healthcare workers (MHCWs) perceive the usefulness and risks of using deepfake technology in grief treatment.Method: After viewing a videoclip of a deepfake grief intervention, participants listed three reasons for and against its use. We conducted

A protocol for a pilot randomised controlled trial of an online cancer bereavement group.

BACKGROUND: The loss of a loved one to cancer brings unique difficulties that affect the bereavement experience. Mixed evidence exists for the effectiveness of in-person group interventions for bereaved caregivers, with barriers to accessing support including perceived stigmatisation and geographical constraints. Online bereavement interventions offer an accessible means of providing grief support at the individual and group level. Research supports the effectiveness of online groups for those bereaved by cancer although most existing studies have examined peer-led online groups only, while em

[A Clinical Case of Grief Hallucination through the Mourning Work Normal Grief and Spiritual Care].

Auditory or visual hallucinations of a deceased person are well known in the normal course of the bereavement process. According to DSM-5, this symptom is included in the associated features supporting diagnosis of persistent complex bereavement disorder. In Japan, however, little is known about these hallucinatory experiences during grieving, and few reports on their prevalence are available. Here, we have reported a clinical case of such experiences following the loss of a spouse. A 66-year-old patient presented to the outpatient department with insomnia after her husband's death. She was pr

Treating complicated grief: effects on sleep quality.

Complicated grief (CG) is characterized by recurrent distressing emotions and intrusive thoughts related to the loss of a loved one and avoidance of reminders of the deceased. Poor sleep quality characterizes CG. Cognitive-behavioral therapy and interpersonal psychotherapy reduce CG symptom severity. The effect of these treatments on sleep quality is not known, however. We investigated whether complicated grief treatments (CGTs) improve sleep quality, as assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Data collected from 95 adults who participated in a randomized controlled trial were reviewed

Psilocybin-Assisted suppoRtive psychoTherapy IN the treatment of prolonged Grief (PARTING) trial: protocol for an open-label pilot trial for cancer-related bereavement.

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) represents a substantial public health issue, especially in oncology settings where it affects up to 30% of bereaved carers. Current best-practice treatments are lengthy, and up to 50% of participants have persistent PGD. Building on encouraging recent research with psychedelic-assisted therapies, the Psilocybin-Assisted suppoRtive psychoTherapy IN the treatment of prolonged Grief (PARTING) trial is the first study to consider psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy as a potential treatment for prolonged grief. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: PARTING is an open-la

Digital Reminiscence for Predeath Grief Among Family Caregivers of Patients With Dementia: A Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Family caregiving for individuals with Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRD) is associated with significant distress related to physical, emotional, and interpersonal losses. Reminiscence therapy may help family caregivers preserve connection, reframe loss, and reduce predeath grief, although its evaluation among caregivers remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of a digital reminiscence platform (Living Memory Home for Dementia Care Pairs [LMH-4-DCP]) for ADRD caregiver-care recipient dyads. "Acknowledge my grief" - experiences and needs of bereavement support in Sweden following the death of a loved one.

BACKGROUND: Grief affects most people at some point, and is commonly associated with psychological distress, reduced well-being, and difficulties in everyday functioning. Support for the bereaved is crucial for grief management, but there is a lack of evidence on how grief support should be arranged and offered. This study aims to highlight the support bereaved people in Sweden have been offered and what they wished had been offered. METHOD: Participants answered a web survey with open questions about which support they received after a loved one's death, if they were satisfied with the suppo

Sibling Bereavement Among Young Indian Adults.

This qualitative study explores the bereavement experiences of 12 surviving siblings in India, focusing on familial, societal, and cultural influences. Six themes emerged: "The Demanding Familial Role," "Isolation That Accompanies the Grief," "Damaging Impact of Society," "Positive Role of Friends and Family," "Support Systems," and "Continuing Bonds." Participants often felt the burden of supporting their parents, leading to personal grief suppression and isolation, exacerbated by societal stigmas. Conversely, empathetic friends, supportive extended family, and professional resources like the

Understanding and Treating Complicated Grief: What Can We Learn from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder?

The paper outlines possible parallels between the phenomenology and treatment of complicated grief and PTSD. In particular, it explores how treatment procedures used in Cognitive Therapy for PTSD (Ehlers & Clark, 2000) may be adapted for the treatment of complicated grief. Stimulus Discrimination may be helpful in breaking the link between everyday triggers and "felt presence" memories of the deceased. Memory Updating procedures may help the patient accept that the deceased is no longer alive and no longer suffering. Reclaiming your Life procedures may help the patient access autobiographical

[Clinical forms of post-traumatic depression].

INTRODUCTION: As a result of determinants specific to the psychopathological structure of the psychological trauma, psycho-traumatised patients very rarely solicit the health care system directly with a request for treatment centred on their trauma. The medical profession is consulted for non-specific symptoms and complications, which are mainly somatoform, addictions and depressive disorders. After a few epidemiological reminders followed by a discussion concerning contemporary depressive and post-traumatic nosographic features, we define, through our clinical experience collated with the dat

Migration and integration in the internal and external community: Narcissistic defence organizations as a hindrance to integration.

In this paper, I am concerned with the question of relationship between internal personality integration and external integration in the community within the context of voluntary migration. Migration always includes a loss of all that one has left behind. Both internal and external integration in the new community thus involve a mourning process that involves a working through of depressive position anxieties. Only then can the migrant turn towards the new object, the new community and initiate a process of integration. This process is particularly difficult for patients with an entrenched sys

Treating prolonged grief disorder with CBT for insomnia: A replicated single-case experimental study protocol.

The most effective treatments of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) result in clinically relevant effects in only about half of the patients and can be emotionally taxing. This points to the importance of improving currently available treatment options. One promising target for enhancing the efficacy of the treatment of PGD is insomnia. Sleep disturbances are very common in bereavement and are proposed to play a causal role in maintaining PGD symptoms. Therefore, targeting sleep problems may be an effective treatment for people with PGD and insomnia disorder. This protocol presents a study, regist

Comparison of Therapist-Guided Versus Self-Guided Internet-Based Stress Inoculation Therapy (ISIT) on Psychological Distress Symptoms in Women After Miscarriage in Iran: A Study Protocol of a Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Miscarriage can lead to various psychological consequences such as grief, anxiety, depression, and psychological distress. Although women who experience a miscarriage may not have formed a bond with their unborn child, the intensity of grief following an abortion does not significantly differ from the loss of other first-degree relatives. The present study will be conducted to compare therapist-guided versus self-guided internet-based stress inoculation therapy (ISIT) on psychological distress symptoms in women after miscarriage. METHODS: This study will be a randomized c

12-hour psychotherapy.

The two cases cited illustrate how short-term therapy can be used to meet a patient's needs to deal with loss and grief. Although the goals as set out in short-term therapy contracts are not always fully achieved, this treatment modality, as delineated by Mann, is valuable to psychiatry. Short-term therapy is not only a sound therapeutic intervention, but also a means of bringing psychiatric health care to a greater segment of the population.

Effects of Imagery Intervention on the Experience of Parental Loss in Adulthood.

Objective: This study investigates the effectiveness of imagery rescripting interventions for adults experiencing parental loss, a profoundly traumatic event. Method: Thirty-five participants were randomly assigned to either an imagery rescripting (IR) group, a reading and writing intervention group, or a control group. The IR intervention, applied once a week for three weeks, incorporated components. Results: Results demonstrated that the IR group showed significant reductions in grief-related emotions and improvements in cognitive appraisals compared to the other groups. These positive chang

Neurobiology of Pet Loss Grief: A Review from a One Health Perspective.

The loss of a companion animal can provoke grief whose intensity rivals human bereavement, yet its biological basis remains largely uncharted. This structured narrative review synthesizes neurobiological, endocrinological, immunological, and psychosocial evidence into a mechanistic framework offered not as established fact but as a source of testable hypotheses. We trace the substrates of the human-animal bond across six interacting systems and propose how disruption of each upon an animal's death may drive grief. Three carry comparatively robust analogical support (oxytocinergic signaling, hy

Peer-led Group Support for Grief Distress.

Despite the wide availability of peer-led grief support groups, there has been limited study of their methodology or outcomes. This pilot study examined a nonclinical sample of 99 adults who self-referred to a peer-led group. This group involved a time-limited, manualized, closed group intervention (Restorative Retelling) that was co-facilitated by peer volunteers. The study documented a low dropout rate from this free service with preimprovement/postimprovement in scores of grief distress as measured by the Prolonged Grief Disorder (PG-13) scale. The peer volunteers were preselected and train

A qualitative study of bereavement support volunteers' views and experiences on an online Acceptance and commitment therapy-based (ACT) training programme.

BACKGROUND: Grief is a natural process, and many people will adjust in time with support from family and friends. However, evidence suggests that around 40% of bereaved people may benefit from additional assistance, including support from bereavement volunteers. Despite the recognition that bereavement care is a public health priority, availability of bereavement support is inconsistent across the UK and internationally. The continuing expansion of online connectivity offers opportunities to develop digital health interventions to help address the needs of grieving individuals. To improve acce

[An interactive guidance therapy for traumatic perinatal bereavement].

The Early Childhood and Parenting Unit within the Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Department at the Reims University Hospital offers an early parent-child care program, notably through Interactive Guidance Therapy (IGT). This intervention is based on a highly structured framework, which makes it very reassuring and supportive for both the child and the parent. This approach allows the therapist to more easily access the intimacy of the parent-child relationship. The microanalysis of interactions filmed with the parent-recognized as the expert on their child-enables a different perspective o
