Appraising groundwater quality and probabilistic human health risks from fluoride-enriched groundwater using the pollution index of groundwater (PIG) and GIS: a case study of adama town and its vicinities in the central main Ethiopian rift valley.

This research's main objective is to identify the level of contamination in drinking water in Adama town and its environs by employing PIG, GIS and HHRA. The physical-chemical parameters of groundwater were determined, and the results were compared to regional and global drinking water quality guidelines. The pH of groundwater is alkaline, and the contents of Ca2+, Na+, HCO3 -, and F- in the majority of samples surpassed the permissible drinking limit. The hydrochemical facies were identified in the following order: Ca-Mg-HCO3, Na-Ca-HCO3, and Na-HCO3. Cation exchange and Rock-water interactio

Electrochemical bioaugmentation as a new strategy for arsenic bioremediation in groundwater.

Arsenic (As) is a toxic metalloid that affects over 100 million people worldwide. Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) offer a new opportunity to catalyze the biological oxidation of arsenite to arsenate, decreasing toxicity and improving subsequent physicochemical separation steps. However, research on arsenic-related electrochemically active microorganisms (As-EAMs) remains limited. This study electrochemically enriched As-EAMs from sediments of a hydrothermal source in northern Chile using a three-electrode cell. Chronoamperometry was run for 116 days at a poised potential of +0.3V (vs. Ag/AgC

Enhancing the bioreduction and interaction of arsenic and iron by thiosulfate in groundwater.

Thiosulfate influences the bioreduction and migration transformation of arsenic (As) and iron (Fe) in groundwater environments. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of microbially-mediated sulfur cycling on the bioreduction and interaction of As and Fe. Microcosm experiments were conducted, including bioreduction of thiosulfate, As(V), and Fe(III) by Citrobacter sp. JH012-1, as well as the influence of thiosulfate input at different initial arsenate concentrations on the bioreduction of As(V) and Fe(III). The results demonstrate that Citrobacter sp. JH012-1 exhibited strong redu

Controlled-Release Materials for Remediation of Trichloroethylene Contamination in Groundwater.

Groundwater contamination by trichloroethylene (TCE) presents a pressing environmental challenge with far-reaching consequences. Traditional remediation methods have shown limitations in effectively addressing TCE contamination. This study reviews the limitations of conventional remediation techniques and investigates the application of oxidant-based controlled-release materials, including encapsulated, loaded, and gel-based potassium permanganate since the year 2000. Additionally, it examines reductant controlled-release materials and electron donor-release materials such as tetrabutyl orthos

Monitoring and prediction of high fluoride concentrations in groundwater in Pakistan.

Concentrations of naturally occurring fluoride in groundwater exceeding the WHO guideline of 1.5 mg/L have been detected in many parts of Pakistan. This may lead to dental or skeletal fluorosis and thereby poses a potential threat to public health. Utilizing a total of 5483 fluoride concentrations, comprising 2160 new measurements as well as those from other sources, we have applied machine learning techniques to predict the probability of fluoride in groundwater in Pakistan exceeding 1.5 mg/L at a 250 m spatial resolution. Climate, soil, lithology, topography, and land cover parameters were i

Environmental risk assessment of propranolol in the groundwater bodies of Europe.

A growing concern for contamination due to pharmaceutical compounds in groundwater is expanding globally. The β-blocker propranolol is a β-adrenoceptors antagonist commonly detected in European groundwater bodies. The effect of propranolol on stygobiotic species (obligate groundwater dweller species) is compelling in the framework of environmental risk assessment (ERA) of groundwater ecosystems. In fact, in Europe, ERA procedures for pharmaceuticals in groundwater are based on data obtained with surrogate surface water species. The use of surrogates has aroused some concern in the scientific a

[Distribution Characteristics and Risk Analysis of Antibiotic in the Groundwater in Beijing].

Based on the GC-MS technique, we conducted a survey to investigate the concentration, distributions, and emission sources of sulfonamides (SAs), fluoroquinolones (FQs), tetracycline (TCs), β-lactam, and macrolides in groundwater in Beijing. Results indicated that SAs, FQs, and TCs were the main types of antibiotic in groundwater, and the detection ratios of trimethoprim, ciprofloxacin, and norfloxacin were above 70%. Concentration of antibiotics in sites from sewage irrigation areas were significantly higher than those from the drinking source area or the south-to-north water recharge areas. T

Nitrate trends in groundwater of the Campania region (southern Italy).

The Environmental Protection Agency of the Campania region in Italy (ARPAC) manages a groundwater quality monitoring network. For almost all the polluted waters, the key parameter driving the classification is the concentration of nitrate; hence, the Campania region, in coherence with the EU regulations, outlined the vulnerable areas and undertook remediation policies. The best groundwater quality is recorded for carbonate aquifers of the Apennine chain; on the contrary, the Tyrrhenian coastal plains are affected by severe contamination, with a locally very contaminated groundwater of the shal

Distribution and potential health risk of groundwater uranium in Korea.

Chronic exposure even to extremely low specific radioactivity of natural uranium in groundwater results in kidney problems and potential toxicity in bones. This study was conducted to assess the potential health risk via intake of the groundwater containing uranium, based on the determination of the uranium occurrence in groundwater. The groundwater was investigated from a total of 4140 wells in Korea. Most of the groundwater samples showed neutral pH and (sub-)oxic condition that was influenced by the mixing with shallow groundwater due to long-screened (open) wells. High uranium contents exc

Development of a groundwater fungal strain as a tool for toxicity assessment.

Despite the significant ecological role played by fungi in groundwater, their value as indicators of groundwater pollution is not known, as fungi are notoriously challenging to assess for toxicity because of their varied morphological components, in particular their filamentous structures. Hence they are rarely used in environmental risk assessments and monitoring programs for aquatic systems. A rapid, low cost, 1-step static toxicity test targeting the hyphal components of fungi was developed that subsequently demonstrated the sensitivity of a ubiquitous and dominant groundwater fungal strain

Treatment of co-mingled benzene, toluene and TCE in groundwater.

This work addressed a hypothetical but practical scenario that includes biological oxidation and reductive dechlorination in treating groundwater containing co-mingled plume of trichloroethene (TCE), benzene and toluene. Groundwater immediately downgradient from the commonly used zero-valent iron (ZVI) has shown alkaline pH (up to 10.7). The elevated pH may influence BTEX compounds (i.e., benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and xylenes) biodegradation, which could also be inhibited by elevated concentrations of TCE. Data from this work suggests that the inhibition coefficients (IC) value for 100

Limitations of the use of environmental tracers to infer groundwater age.

Apparent ages obtained from the measured concentrations of environmental tracers have the potential to inform recharge rates, flow rates, and assist in the calibration of groundwater models. A number of studies have investigated sources of error in the relationships between the apparent ages, and the age assumed by models to relate this quantity to an aquifer property (e.g., recharge). These studies have also provided a number of techniques for correcting the known biases of apparent ages. In this paper, we review some of the concepts of age bias. We then demonstrate this bias through the use

Identification of multiple sources of groundwater contamination by dual isotopes.

Chlorinated solvents are one of the most commonly detected groundwater contaminants in industrial areas. Identification of polluters and allocation of contaminant sources are important concerns in the evaluation of complex subsurface contamination with multiple sources. In recent years, compound-specific isotope analyses (CSIA) have been employed to discriminate among different contaminant sources and to better understand the fate of contaminants in field-site studies. In this study, the usefulness of dual isotopes (carbon and chlorine) was shown in assessments of groundwater contamination at

Mercury speciation and mobilization in a wastewater-contaminated groundwater plume.

We measured the concentration and speciation of mercury (Hg) in groundwater down-gradient from the site of wastewater infiltration beds operated by the Massachusetts Military Reservation, western Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Total mercury concentrations in oxic, mildly acidic, uncontaminated groundwater are 0.5-1 pM, and aquifer sediments have 0.5-1 ppb mercury. The plume of impacted groundwater created by the wastewater disposal is still evident, although inputs ceased in 1995, as indicated by anoxia extending at least 3 km down-gradient from the disposal site. Solutes indicative of a progression

Bacterial communities in tetrachloroethene-polluted groundwaters: a case study.

The compositions of bacterial groundwater communities of three sites contaminated with chlorinated ethenes were analyzed by pyrosequencing their 16S rRNA genes. For each location, the entire and the active bacterial populations were characterized by independent molecular analysis of the community DNA and RNA. The sites were selected to cover a broad range of different environmental conditions and contamination levels, with tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE) being the primary contaminants. Before sampling the biomass, a long-term monitoring of the polluted locations revealed high

Effects of multiscale anisotropy on basin and hyporheic groundwater flow.

Various subsurface flow systems exhibit a combination of small-scale to large-scale anisotropy in hydraulic conductivity (K). The large-scale anisotropy results from systematic trends (e.g., exponential decrease or increase) of K with depth. We present a general two-dimensional solution for calculation of topography-driven groundwater flow considering both small- and large-scale anisotropy in K. This solution can be applied to diverse systems with arbitrary head distribution and geometry of the water table boundary, such as basin or hyporheic flow. In a special case, this solution reduces to t

A mass balance study of the phytoremediation of perchloroethylene-contaminated groundwater.

A mass balance study was performed under controlled field conditions to investigate the phytoremediation of perchloroethylene (PCE) by hybrid poplar trees. Water containing 7-14 mg L(-1) PCE was added to the test bed. Perchloroethylene, trichloroethylene, and cis-dichloroethylene were detected in the effluent at an average of 0.12 mg L(-1), 3.9 mg L(-1), and 1.9 mg L(-1), respectively. The total mass of chlorinated ethenes in the water was reduced by 99%. Over 95% of the recovered chlorine was as free chloride in the soil, indicating near-complete dehalogenation of the PCE. Occurence and distribution of fluoride in groundwaters of central Rajasthan, India.

High fluoride in groundwater has been reported from many parts of India, particularly its impact on human health. Waterborne fluorosis is prevalent in parts of Ajmer and Jaipur districts in central Rajasthan which can be correlated to excessive concentration of the toxic fluoride ions in drinking water. The area, falling under the semiarid terrain of central Rajasthan, is geologically occupied by Precambrian rocks where groundwater occurs under unconfined conditions. Fluoride concentration in shallow aquifer samples of the study area ranges between 0.12 to 16.9 mg/L. Presence of fluoride beari

Remediation of groundwater contaminated with DNAPLs by biodegradable oil emulsion.

Emulsion-based remediation with biodegradable vegetable oils was investigated as an alternative technology for the treatment of subsurface DNAPLs (dense non-aqueous phase liquids) such as TCE (trichloroethylene) and PCE (perchloroethylene). Corn and olive oil emulsions obtained by homogenization at 8000rpm for 15min were used. The emulsion droplets prepared with corn and olive oil gave a similar size distribution (1-10microm) and almost all of initially injected oil, >90%, remained in a dispersed state. In batch experiments, 2% (v/v) oil emulsion could adsorb up to 11,000ppm of TCE or 18,000pp
