Feeder insects differ in passage of coccidian oocysts in captive reptiles.

Coccidia (Apicomplexa) may have a devastating effect on captive reptiles, particularly chameleons and bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps). This study investigated the potential of three common feeder insects - the Argentine cockroach (Blaptica dubia), the banana cricket (Gryllus assimilis) and the superworm larva (Zophobas morio) - to act as passive vectors for coccidian oocysts, specifically Isospora amphiboluri and Choleoeimeria pogonae, common enteric parasites of captive bearded dragons. Faecal samples from experimentally infected bearded dragons were fed to the insects to assess the passag

Cannibal crickets on a forced march for protein and salt.

Swarming and mass migration are spectacular and sometimes devastating features of the biology of various animal species. These phenomena are typically associated with actual or anticipated depletion of food resources after an increase in population density, but the mechanisms driving such collective movements are poorly understood. Here we reveal that insects in large, coordinated migratory bands consisting of millions of Mormon crickets in western North America were deprived of two essential nutritional resources: protein and salt. The insects themselves provided a major source of these nutri

Analysis of inter-leg coordination mechanisms in cricket locomotion: insights from thoracic Ganglion network transection.

Adaptive insect locomotion depends on interactions between the nervous system and body dynamics, yet how these components contribute to inter-leg coordination remains unclear. We investigated the role of direct neural coupling by unilaterally transecting the posterior intermediate connective linking the mesothoracic and metathoracic ganglia in the cricketGryllus bimaculatus. We analyzed kinematic changes and compared them with predictions from a purely neural phase oscillator network model featuring hierarchical asymmetric coupling. The experiments showed a clear dissociation: transection disr

Morphological, molecular and biological characterization of Mehdinema alii (Nematoda: Diplogasterida) from the decorated cricket (Gryllodes sigillatus).

The nematode Mehdinema alii was recovered from the decorated cricket Gryllodes sigillatus (Walker). Morphometric comparisons are presented from 3 populations. The nematode is characterized by dense arrays of spines on the cuticle of the anterior half of the body and a highly elongate, tubular stoma with a dorsal denticle in the glottoid region. Females have a protruding vulva. Young females are amphidelphic, but the anterior ovary disappears in older females bearing multiple developing juveniles. The male is monorchic with asymmetrically placed genital papillae, distally fused spicules, and a

Neuronal processing of complex sounds in the prothoracic ganglion of a bushcricket.

Male bushcrickets produce complex species-specific songs to attract mating partners. Since the neuronal processing underlying song-pattern detection is not fully understood, we analysed extracellularly recorded song-induced spike responses and local field potentials across the first stage of auditory processing in the prothoracic ganglion of Mecopoda elongata. We analysed the influence of the temporal structure and of any change in amplitude of spiking and local field potentials. We presented the complete chirp and compared the neuronal response pattern with those responses evoked individually

Morphological and molecular characterization of Isobinema luisdearmasi sp. nov. (Oxyuridomorpha: Thelastomatoidea: Travassosinematidae) from the mole cricket Gryllotalpa orientalis Burmeister, 1838 (Orthoptera: Gryllotalpidae) in Japan.

Isobinema luisdearmasi sp. nov. (Nematoda: Oxyuridomorpha: Travassosinematidae) is described from the mole cricket Gryllotalpa orientalis Burmeister, 1838 (Orthoptera: Gryllotalpidae) in Kasugai, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The females of I. luisdearmasi sp. nov. are similar to I. flagellocercum Rao, 1958 (type species of the genus) by some morphometric variables overlapping in both species, namely the body length and the comparative length of the oesophagus and tail. The new species can be differentiated from I. flagellocercum by its comparatively slender body and larger eggs. Isobinema luisdear

Revision of the Pygmy Cricket genus Homonemobius Chopard, 1935, with description of a new species using integrative taxonomy (Orthoptera: Trigonidiidae; Nemobiinae).

In this study, a systematic revision of the species of the genus Homonemobius in China was carried out using an integrative taxonomic approach, including the accounts of four known species and one new species, H. brevititilana sp. nov. The genus can be characterized by small body, similar vein structures between sexes, absence of stridulatory veins and lack of tympanum on the anterior tibiae. The new species, H. brevititilana sp. nov., can be distinguished from its congeners by four yellow stripes on the occiput, yellow spots on the pronotum and abdomen, and five regular longitudinal veins in

Sexual conflict and female immune suppression in the cricket, Allonemobious socius.

In many animal systems, females exhibit a localized immune response to insemination that helps defend against sexually transmitted disease. However, this response may also kill sperm, reducing a male's reproductive potential. If males could suppress this response, they may be able to increase their sperm's representation in the female's reproductive tract, thereby increasing their fitness. Here we address the hypothesis that, under conditions of sperm competition, males interfere with female immunity. To test our hypothesis, we manipulated levels of female mating frequency (single vs. multiply

Glutamate-like immunoreactivity marks compartments of the mushroom bodies in the brain of the cricket.

In the mushroom bodies of the brain of the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus, the distribution of glutamate-like immunoreactivity is shown by using several immunocytochemical staining protocols and confocal and conventional microscopy. Glutamate-like staining of intrinsic cells of mushroom bodies (Kenyon cells), their axons and projections, is demonstrated for the first time. Two types of Kenyon cells constituting distinct, separated populations within the perikaryal layer and in prominent neuropilar subcompartments exhibit strong (type III cells) or medium (type II cells) glutamate-like immunoreact

Fall-like acclimation alters mitochondrial function and substrate use in freeze-tolerant crickets.

Acclimation to low temperatures in insects involves complex metabolic adjustments to ensure survival. Notably, cryoprotectants including glycerol, trehalose and proline can accumulate in insects to promote freeze tolerance. Interestingly, these metabolites can also be converted to metabolic fuels sustaining mitochondrial ATP production. This study investigates the metabolic shifts in the freeze-tolerant cricket Gryllus veletis during fall-like acclimation, focusing on mitochondrial function and its possible link with cryoprotectant accumulation. We hypothesized that fall-like acclimation promo

Allergic Reaction to a Commercially Available Insect Snack Caused by House Cricket (Acheta domesticus) Tropomyosin.

SCOPE: Edible insects contain allergens with potential cross-reactivity to other invertebrates. Here, this study examines IgE-reactive proteins in a house cricket snack (Acheta domesticus) leading to an allergic reaction in a 27-year old man followed by a similar reaction days later after eating shrimps. METHODS AND RESULTS: Prick to prick tests verify the IgE-mediated allergy to crickets and skin prick testing confirms a type I sensitization to house dust mite without any clinical relevance for the patient, and to shrimp extracts, but is negative for several other foods. Serological testing

Acoustic evolution in crickets: need for phylogenetic study and a reappraisal of signal effectiveness.

Cricket stridulums and calls are highly stereotyped, except those with greatly modified tegmina and/or venation, or "unusual" frequency, duration and/or intensity. This acoustic diversity remained unsuspected until recently, and current models of acoustic evolution in crickets erroneously consider this clade homogeneous for acoustic features. The few phylogenetic studies analyzing acoustic evolution in crickets demonstrated that acoustic behavior could be particularly labile in some clades. The ensuing pattern for cricket evolution is consequently extremely complex. We argue that: (1) phylogen

Synthesis and paralytic activities of squaryl amino acid-containing polyamine toxins.

Eight analogs 4A-7A and 4B-7B of philanthotoxin (PhTX) from wasp venom and nephilatoxin-8 (NPTX-8) from spider venom whose tyrosine or asparagine linker is replaced by squaryl (sq) amino acid or 4-amino squaryl (4-asq) amino acid have been synthesized in an efficient manner via coupling of N-acyl squaryl amino acid intermediate 19 or 26 with the corresponding polyamine part. Preliminary bioassay using crickets revealed that the analogs substituted by glutamate-type squaryl amino acid-containing NPTX 7A and 7B showed more potent paralytic activities than that of NPTX-8.

Beneficial sterols in selected edible insects and their associated antibacterial activities.

Edible insects are increasingly gaining popularity as research reveals multiple benefits. However, the rediscovery of natural products from insects as medicinal agents has received limited attention. This study aimed at evaluating the diversity of sterols in extracts of nine edible insects and potential antibacterial activities. Dichloromethane extracts of these insects were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to identify important sterols, followed by evaluation of their anti-bacterial activities. Nineteen sterols were identified with the highest recorded in African fruit beet

Tonotopic Ca2+ dynamics and sound processing in auditory interneurons of the bush-cricket Mecopoda elongata.

Two auditory neurons, TN-1 and ON-1, in the bush-cricket, Mecopoda elongata, have large dendritic arborisations which receive excitatory synaptic inputs from tonotopically organised axonal terminals of auditory afferents in the prothoracic ganglion. By combining intracellular microelectrode recording with calcium imaging we demonstrate that the dendrites of both neurons show a clear Ca2+ signal in response to broad-frequency species-specific chirps. Due to the organisation of the afferents frequency specific auditory activation should lead to local Ca2+ increases in their dendrites. In respons

Genetic covariance in immune measures and pathogen resistance in decorated crickets is sex and pathogen specific.

Insects are important models for studying immunity in an ecological and evolutionary context. Yet, most empirical work on the insect immune system has come from phenotypic studies meaning we have a limited understanding of the genetic architecture of immune function in the sexes. We use nine highly inbred lines to thoroughly examine the genetic relationships between a suite of commonly used immune assays (haemocyte count, implant encapsulation, total phenoloxidase activity, antibacterial zone of inhibition and pathogen clearance) and resistance to infection by three generalist insect pathogens

Sand crickets (Gryllus firmus) have low susceptibility to entomopathogenic nematodes and their pathogenic bacteria.

The entomopathogenic nematode, Steinernema scapterisci, a specialist parasite of crickets, has been successfully used to combat the southern mole cricket, Neoscapteriscus borellii, which is an invasive pest of turf grass. As an entomopathogenic nematode, S. scapterisci causes rapid death of the insects it infects and uses bacteria to facilitate its parasitism. However, our understanding of the relative contributions of the nematode, S. scapterisci, and its bacterial symbiont, Xenorhabdus innexi, to parasitism remains limited. Here we utilized the sand cricket, Gryllus firmus, as a model host t

Reciprocal Coupling of Circadian Clocks in the Compound Eye and Optic Lobe in the Cricket Gryllus bimaculatus.

The circadian system comprises multiple clocks, including central and peripheral clocks. The central clock generally governs peripheral clocks to synchronize circadian rhythms throughout the animal body. However, whether the peripheral clock influences the central clock is unclear. This issue can be addressed through a system comprising a peripheral clock (compound eye clock [CE clock]) and central clock (the optic lobe [OL] clock) in the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus. We previously found that the compound eye regulates the free-running period (τ) and the stability of locomotor rhythms driven by

Venom phenotypes of the Rock Rattlesnake (Crotalus lepidus) and the Ridge-nosed Rattlesnake (Crotalus willardi) from México and the United States.

Although the Mexican Highlands has the highest diversity of small-bodied rattlesnakes in the world, studies on the species found throughout this region have been relatively scarce. This has led to challenges with examining venom phenotypic characteristics, as well as species misidentifications and misclassifications. In the current study we investigated venom variation among four subspecies of Crotalus lepidus (C. l. klaluberi, C. l. lepidus, C. l. maculosus, C. l. morulus) and four subspecies of C. willardi (C. w. amabilis, C. w. obscurus, C. w. silus, and C. w. willardi) that inhabit regions

Application of insect oils in bone broth: Effects of roasting and ultrasound-assisted extraction on meat-like volatiles, fatty acid profile and sensory properties.

Despite extensive research on insect oils, their application in food systems remains limited. In this study, roasting pretreatment was integrated with ultrasound-assisted extraction to enhance nutritional and sensory properties of insect oils. Optimal roasting conditions were 160 °C for 25 min at 60 rpm for Protaetia brevitarsis larvae and 155 °C for 35 min at 75 rpm for Gryllus bimaculatus. Incorporating these oils into bone broth significantly increased oleic, linoleic, and palmitic acids, resulting in a fatty acid profile similar to that of beef. G. bimaculatus oil contained elevated levels
