National survey of blindness and visual impairment in Guatemala, 2015.

PURPOSE: To estimate the prevalence of blindness and visual impairment in older adults living in Guatemala. METHODS: Participants ³50 years of age were selected using random cluster sampling and evaluated using the Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness method. Visual acuity was measured, and the lens was examined. If presenting visual acuity was <20/60, it was also tested with a pinhole and fundoscopy was performed. Blindness and visual impairment were classified as moderate visual impairment (presenting visual acuity <20/60 to 20/200), severe visual impairment (presenting visual acuity <20

The ecology of sexual health of sexual minorities in Guatemala City.

Guatemalan gay and bisexual men, men who have sex with men (MSM), and transgender persons carry disproportionate burden of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections compared with other Guatemalan subgroups. However, little is known about the determinants of sexual health to inform health promotion and disease prevention interventions among these sexual minorities. We sought to explore sexual health and HIV risk among Guatemalan sexual minorities, using a community-based participatory research approach. We conducted 8 focus groups (n = 87 participants total) and 10 individual in-depth inter

Elimination of Onchocerca volvulus Transmission in the Huehuetenango Focus of Guatemala.

In Latin America, onchocerciasis is targeted for elimination by 2012 through twice-yearly mass treatment of the eligible population with ivermectin. In Guatemala, two of the four historical endemic foci have demonstrated elimination of transmission, following World Health Organization guidelines. Using established guidelines ophthalmological, serological, and entomological evaluations were conducted in 2007-8 to determine the transmission status of onchocerciasis in the Huehuetenango focus. The prevalence of Onchocerca volvulus microfilariae in the anterior segment of the eye in 365 residents

Investigation of an outbreak of rickettsial febrile illness in Guatemala, 2007.

OBJECTIVES: We describe an outbreak of spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiosis that occurred in 2007 in a farming community in southeastern Guatemala. We identified 17 cases of an acute febrile illness, among which 10, including two fatalities, were confirmed or probable cases of rickettsial disease (case-fatality proportion 12%). METHODS: PCR, a microimmunofluorescence assay (IFA), and Western blotting were performed on patient samples, and PCR was performed on ticks. RESULTS: Using an indirect IFA, seven of 16 (44%) ill persons tested had both IgM and IgG antibodies reacting with one or mo

Geographical characterization of the triatomine infestations in north-central Guatemala.

In an entomological study in 2002, the degree of domestic and peridomestic infestation with triatomine bugs and the geographical distribution of such infestations were investigated in north-central Guatemala. The survey team searched for triatomines in houses constructed with mud walls or thatched roofs, in villages suspected of being infested. The level of infestation observed was lower than that seen in the same area and in eastern Guatemala, in a preliminary survey, 3 years earlier. Most of the infestations detected were of Triatoma dimidiata but even this species was found in <7% of the ho

Congenital cardiac disease in children with Down's syndrome in Guatemala.

BACKGROUND: Congenital cardiac disease is the greatest cause of death in patients with Down's syndrome during the first two years of life, with from two-fifths to two-thirds of those with Down's syndrome also having congenital cardiac malformations. The lesions within the heart can be single or multiple. Our objective was to evaluate the frequency and type of such congenital cardiac malformations in patients born with Down's in Guatemala, and to provide baseline information for further research. METHODS: We reviewed all patients with Down's syndrome who underwent a cardiologic screening exami

The contrasting epidemiology of Cyclospora and Cryptosporidium among outpatients in Guatemala.

We compared epidemiologic characteristics of Cryptosporidium and Cyclospora in surveillance data from outpatient departments in Guatemala. Routinely-submitted stool specimens were screened by microscopy. Age, sex, and symptom data were collected. Cyclospora was detected in 117 (2.1%) and Cryptosporidium in 67 (1.2%) of 5,520 specimens. The prevalence of Cyclospora peaked in the warmer months, while Cryptosporidium was most common in the rainy season. Both affected children more than adults, but Cryptosporidium affected children at a younger age than Cyclospora (median age 2 years versus 5 year

Serologic survey of neotropical bats in Guatemala for virus antibodies.

Neotropical bats were collected from different life zones in Guatemala in 1983 and 1984 to determine the presence and distribution of antibody against 10 viruses. Bats were collected with mist nets at 13 sites in eight departments and 332 serum specimens were obtained for testing for neutralizing (N) antibody by the plaque-reduction neutralization test. Eighty-seven (26%) of the 332 bats from 16 (38%) of 42 bat species sampled were serologically positive for five of six arboviruses and for two other viruses tested. Antibodies against Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) variant I-A/B, eastern

The distribution of intestinal helminth infections in a rural village in Guatemala.

Fecal egg count scores were used to investigate the distribution and abundance of intestinal helminths in the population of a rural village. Prevalences of the major helminths were 41% with Ascaris lumbricoides, 60% with Trichuris trichiura and 50% with Necator americanus. All three parasites showed a highly aggregated distribution among hosts. Age/prevalence and age/intensity profiles were typical for both A. lumbricoides and T. trichiura with the highest worm burdens in the 5-10 year old children. For hookworm both prevalence and intensity curves were convex in shape with maximum infection l

Microepidemiology of onchocerciasis in Guatemala: dispersal and survival of Simulium ochraceum.

Wild Simulium ochraceum females, both blood engorged and non-blood engorged, were collected from human volunteers infected with Onchocerca volvulus, marked with fluorescent dyes, and released from the same locality as they were collected during February and March 1989. A small hyperendemic village located within 0.5 km of streams supporting large populations of S. ochraceum larvae served as the site for both collection and release of adult females. Fifteen sites for the recapture of flies were located within this same village, within two other villages located 1.0 and 3.7 km from it, and at ot

Child malnutrition and deprivation--observations in Guatemala and Costa Rica.

Traditional populations consisting of small tribal groups living in close contact with nature may be virtually free from endemic malnutrition owing to the relative absence of infectious diseases. Transition toward modern ways of life and population growth, leading to crowding and underdevelopment, favours endemic malnutrition due to the interaction of malnutrition and infection. Although important features of the traditional culture--breast-feeding, protective child rearing--may remain intact, they are not enough, and such populations exhibit high rates of infectious disease, malnutrition and

Onchocerciasis in Guatemala. III. Daytime periodicity of microfilariae in skin.

Periodicity of microfilariae of Onchocerca volvulus in the skin was not believed to exist until investigators in Africa recently demonstrated diurnal periodicity. Interestingly, this maximal density of microfilariae in the skin has been shown to coincide with the peak biting time of the Simulium vector. The current study was performed as part of other studies in Guatemala. Maximal density of microfilariae in the skin was at 1000 hours or shortly therafter. This peak is earlier than reported in Africa. The most active feeding period of Simulium ochraceum, believed to be the principal vector in

Case report of canine discoid lupus erythematosus in Guatemala.

An 11-year-old male Golden Retriever was presented for consultation due to a chronic progressive lesion on the nose that had started a year before. The majority of the nasal mucosa was affected, with the disruption of the normal architecture, pigment atrophy and abundant peeling on the rostral plane. Histopathology revealed a band of lichenoid infiltrate at the interface and vacuolation of the cells in the basal layer consistent with a diagnosis of canine discoid lupus erythematosus.

Self-reported barriers to pediatric surgical care in Guatemala.

Access to pediatric surgical care is limited in low- and middle-income countries. Barriers must be identified before improvements can be made. This pilot study aimed to identify self-reported barriers to pediatric surgical care in Guatemala. We surveyed 78 families of Guatemalan children with surgical conditions who were seen at a pediatric surgical clinic in Guatemala City. Spanish translators were used to complete questionnaires regarding perceived barriers to surgical care. Surgical conditions included hernias, rectal prolapse, anorectal malformations, congenital heart defects, cryptorchidi

Childhood asthma and indoor woodsmoke from cooking in Guatemala.

We estimated the prevalence and severity of asthma, and the association with cooking on open wood fires, as preparation for a large-scale randomized field trial on effects of indoor air pollution and child health. This is one of the first systematic studies of asthma and indoor wood-smoke pollution and to our knowledge the first asthma study in a purely indigeneous population in Latin America. The mothers of 1058 children aged 4-6 years were interviewed, using the standardized ISAAC (International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood) procedures and questionnaire. The study population is

Cutaneous leishmaniasis in Guatemala: people's knowledge, concepts and practices.

Ten rural communities in the northern area of Guatemala where cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is endemic were investigated to determine the residents' knowledge of the disease, their related concepts and practices, and their treatment preferences, and to identify the communication channels they use to acquire information. Of 425 heads of household interviewed, 96.7% could accurately describe a typical CL lesion. CL was found to be the fourth most frequently mentioned disease (in studies based on a free list format) and to be considered the sixth most serious (in studies based on paired comparison

Health seeking behaviour for child illness in rural Guatemala.

Considerable efforts were made in Guatemala to cover rural areas with health centres, and health programmes have been launched to treat and prevent the most important childhood diseases. Despite this, the utilization rate of public health services has reportedly been low throughout the past two decades. How, and how effectively, do mothers resolve the health problems of their children? To gain better insight into health care behaviour, we conducted a health services utilization survey in two highland communities in the department of Sacatepequez in 1992-1993. We asked 324 mothers in two villag
