Orthodontics is a periodontal treatment. "Guided orthodontic regeneration" (GOR) procedures use orthodontic movements in perio-restorative patients. The GOR technique includes a guided orthodontic "soft tissue" regeneration (GOTR) and a guided orthodontic "bone" regeneration (GOBR) with a plastic soft tissue approach and a regenerating reality. The increased amount of soft tissue gained with orthodontic movement can be used for subsequent periodontal regenerative techniques. The increased amount of bone can as well improve primary implant stability and, eventually, simplify a GTR technique to

As a widespread chronical disease, periodontitis progressively destroys tooth-supporting structures (periodontium) and eventually leads to tooth loss. Therefore, regeneration of damaged/lost periodontal tissues has been a major subject in periodontal research. During periodontal tissue regeneration, biomaterials play pivotal roles in improving the outcome of the periodontal therapy. With the advancement of biomaterial science and engineering in recent years, new biomimetic materials and scaffolding fabrication technologies have been proposed for periodontal tissue regeneration. The clinical management of periodontal disease is a global concern, and the regeneration of periodontal tissue defects due to periodontitis faces a huge challenge in the field of regenerative dentistry. Although conventional periodontal therapies focusing on in flammation control could stop or delay the progression of the disease, periodontal regeneration remains an elusive but laudable goal. Since late 1980s, concerted efforts have been made to accelerate and augment periodontal repair by using guided tissue regeneration (GTR), guided bone regeneration (GBR) and a wide range of other regenera

A 36-year-old male patient diagnosed with severe chronic periodontitis was treated with novel surgery for his maxillary right lateral incisor. Preoperatively, a 3D printer was used, based on CBCT datasets, to produce a photosensitive resin bony anatomy replica. The patient's blood was centrifuged to obtain advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) and injected platelet-rich fibrin (I-PRF), then mixed with Bio-Oss and packed onto the 3D replica to form the ideal shape. The replica was positioned at the planned sites without changes. The A-PRF membrane was applied over the replica as well as a Bio-G

Periodontitis is a common chronic inflammatory disease that affects tooth-supporting tissues. We engineer a multifunctional periodontal membrane for the guided tissue regeneration of lost periodontal tissues. The major drawback of current periodontal membranes is the lack of tissue regeneration properties. Here, a series of nanofibrous membranes based on poly(ε-caprolactone) with tunable biochemical and biophysical properties were developed for periodontal tissue regeneration. The engineered membranes were surface coated using biomimetic polydopamine to promote the adhesion of therapeutic prot

Periodontal regenerative techniques are performed to accomplish the restitution of soft and hard teeth-supporting tissues that have been lost due to trauma or inflammatory disease. Periodontal membranes are used for these techniques to provide support and a framework for cell growth and tissue regeneration. They act as a temporary and selective barrier to cell proliferation. Easy clinical handling, biomechanical specifications, high biocompatibility, cell-occlusivity, and satisfactory bioresorption rate are essential properties a membrane needs to be effective. The aim of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic effects of probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum in experimentally induced periodontal disease in rabbits. The incisor teeth of 24 rabbits were scaled under general anesthesia. Two weeks later, silk ligatures were placed at the gingival margin of the incisor teeth to induce periodontal disease. After confirming the presence of periodontal disease by periodontal probing four weeks later, incisor mucogingival flaps were created and gingival pocket lavage and debridement was performed. The rabbits were randomly divided into four groups. Group 1: C

External cervical resorption (ECR) is a type of dental resorption that originates from the loss of the cementum's protective layer. The direct exposure of dentin to the periodontal ligament may lead to the invasion of clastic cells through an entry point on the external root surface into the dentinal tissue, causing resorption. Depending on the extension of ECR, different treatments are proposed. Although the literature presents distinct materials and methods for restoring ECR areas, an existing gap is related to care in the treatment of the supporting periodontal tissue. This review provides an in-depth analysis of dental bone regeneration, tracing its evolution and applications. Recent advancements in dental bone regeneration have allowed the utilization of barrier membranes to direct the regeneration process, excluding undesired cell types and fostering the growth of beneficial tissues, particularly in treating periodontal and bone defects. Over the past forty years, bone regeneration has advanced significantly, effectively enhancing periodontal ligament restoration while preventing unwanted soft-tissue growth. It is widely applied in periodontal, oral, impl

Periodontitis is a dysbiosis-driven inflammatory disease affecting the tooth-supporting tissues, characterized by their progressive resorption, which can ultimately lead to tooth loss. A step-wise therapeutic approach is employed for periodontitis. After an initial behavioral and non-surgical phase, intra-bony or furcation defects may be amenable to regenerative procedures. This review discusses the regenerative technologies employed for periodontal regeneration, highlighting the current limitations and future research areas. The search, performed on the MEDLINE database, has identified the av

BACKGROUND: Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) has the potential to promote periodontal regeneration, which is one of the goals of periodontal surgery. While many successful reports of periodontal regeneration using barrier membranes exist in the literature, considerable heterogeneity of GTR outcomes is more typical of current reports. The reasons for this variability are numerous, but could be attributed to differences in surgical skills and case selection. There is a need for a current analysis of the factors affecting success and the formation of evidence-based treatment guidelines for GTR.

The periodontium is an integrated, functional unit of multiple tissues surrounding and supporting the tooth, including but not limited to cementum (CM), periodontal ligament (PDL) and alveolar bone (AB). Periodontal tissues can be destructed by chronic periodontal disease, which can lead to tooth loss. In support of the treatment for periodontally diseased tooth, various biomaterials have been applied starting as a contact inhibition membrane in the guided tissue regeneration (GTR) that is the current gold standard in dental clinic. Recently, various biomaterials have been prepared in a form o

Guided tissue regeneration procedures often result in the loss of gingival tissue. This postoperative problem is associated with the treatment of interproximal periodontal defects. A surgical technique is presented which preserves the interproximal tissue, facilitating primary and sustained coverage of the guided tissue regeneration barrier. Twelve interproximal defects were treated with this technique using Gore-Tex Periodontal Material. The Gore-Tex Periodontal Material remained in place for 4 months. The sites were reentered at 1 year and clinical parameters were recorded. At 4 months, 11 o

Periodontal regeneration aims to restore the structural and functional properties of periodontal tissues, which are often lost or diminished due to infection, inflammation, age, and other factors. Traditional approaches, while effective, often face limitations such as uncertain outcomes and limited capacity for precise tissue regeneration. This review explores the transformative potential of microfluidics and 3D printing used in periodontal regeneration. Microfluidics and 3D printed scaffolds, allow for precise control over architecture and functionalities at the microscale environment. Both t

Periodontal diseases are highly prevalent and are linked to several systemic diseases. The goal of periodontal treatment is to halt the progression of the disease and regenerate the damaged tissue. However, achieving complete and functional periodontal regeneration is challenging because the periodontium is a complex apparatus composed of different tissues, including bone, cementum, and periodontal ligament. Stem cells may represent an effective therapeutic tool for periodontal regeneration due to their plasticity and their ability to regenerate different tissues. This review presents and crit

Surgical separation of supernumerary teeth fused to permanent incisor teethhas typically given rise to residual post surgical periodontal defects, induding loss of attachment and deep periodontal pocketing with persistent inflammation. Other complications include devitalisation of the retained tooth section, ankylosis, external and replacement resorption. A unique technique of using guided tissue regeneration has been successfully employed to promote periodontal healing, after 2 cases of surgical removal of a supernumerary tooth fused to a permanent maxillary lateral incisor tooth. BACKGROUND: Although hyaluronic acid (HA) has long been used for many medical applications, only in recent years has it gained greater popularity in the field of periodontics because of its biological effects during wound healing. Even today, most clinicians are not aware that more than one type of HA exists and that the extent of its biological functions may vary depending upon the particular characteristics of the biomolecule itself.
AIM: To review and synthesize the current preclinical and clinical evidence on the biological effects and therapeutic applications of HA in periodontology, wit

Tissue engineering scaffolds with specific surface topographical morphologies can regulate cellular behaviors and promote tissue repair. In this study, poly lactic(co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)/wool keratin composite guided tissue regeneration (GTR) membranes with three types of microtopographies (three groups each of pits, grooves and columns, thus nine groups in total) were prepared. Then, the effects of the nine groups of membranes on cell adhesion, proliferation and osteogenic differentiation were examined. The nine different membranes had clear, regular and uniform surface topographical morpho
