Low back pain in elite rhythmic gymnasts.

BACKGROUND: Rhythmic gymnastics is a sport that blends the athleticism of a gymnast with the grace of a ballerina. The sport demands both the coordination of handling various apparatus and the flexibility to attain positions not seen in any other sport. To attain perfection and reproducibility of their routines, the athletes must practice and repeat the basic elements of their routines thousands of times. In so doing, the athlete places herself at risk of a myriad of overuse injuries, the most common being low back pain. METHODS: To document the presence and severity of low back pain in elite

Bilateral fatigue fractures of the radial shaft in a gymnast.

A 24-year-old female gymnast had a 3-month history of bilateral forearm pain. A Tc-99m MDP bone scan demonstrated focally increased activity in the radial shafts on blood pool and delayed images, characteristic of fatigue fractures. Fatigue fractures commonly occur in the lower extremities. Upper extremity fatigue fractures, in contrast, are uncommon and usually involve the humerus or ulna. Fatigue fracture of the radial shaft from gymnastic exercise has not been previously reported.

Injuries to elite gymnasts over 10 yr.

This retrospective study of 42 male and 74 female elite (artistic) gymnasts at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) reviews all the injuries reported between 1982 and 1991 (inclusive). The injuries were categorized according to type of injury and their specific anatomical distribution. The study also analyzes the incidence of stress fractures in the gymnasts and the prevalence of spondylolysis. Although it is noted from the literature that gymnastics can be a hazardous sport, this study demonstrates an absence of catastrophic injuries and a low number of severe injuries.

Chronic stress injuries of the elbow in young gymnasts.

The radiological changes of chronic stress injuries of the elbow in 19 adolescent elite gymnasts are reported. The principal abnormalities were avascular necrosis of the capitellar epiphysis (Panner's disease) (one patient), post-traumatic subarticular necrosis (osteochondritis dissecans) of the capitellum (six patients) and the medial articular eminence of the distal humerus (one patient). Flattening and anterior depression of the radial head epiphysis with an underlying metaphyseal notch associated with an epiphyseal cleft (three patients), which, in one patient who continued training, devel

Injury patterns of female competitive club gymnasts.

Gymnast and injury information on 178 competitive female gymnasts was collected through questionnaires and interviews in a 3-year prospective epidemiologic study. The injury rate was 30/100 gymnasts/year, .52 injuries/1000 h. Injury rates excluding risk exposure increased with competitive level, but the top level gymnasts had the lowest rate per 1000 h of practice. Fractures of the wrist, fingers and toes were most common, followed by sprains of ankle and knee. Nearly 40% of the sudden-onset injuries occurred in the floor event. 'Missed move' was most frequently cited as the injury mechanism,

Meralgia paraesthetica--a sports lesion in girl gymnasts.

Investigation into thigh pain in two girl gymnasts has established the likely relationship between the point of impact on the thighs during exercises on the asymmetric bars and mild neuropathy of the lateral femoral cutaenous nerve. The clinical and biomechanical steps taken to elucidate the problem are described. Local infiltration of anaesthetic has confirmed a definitive diagnosis of meralgia paraesthetica in one case.

Wrist Guards/Supports in Gymnastics: Are They Helping or Hurting You?

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of wrist pain among gymnasts ranges from 46% to 79%. To alleviate wrist pain, gymnasts wear wrist guards/supports (WG/S). PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of WG/S on the wrist joint through joint moment, angles, total joint range of motion (ROM) arc, and ground-reaction force (GRF). STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: A cross-sectional study design was used to investigate 23 female gymnasts (mean ± SD: age, 12.3 ± 1.5 years; height, 143.4 ± 7.6 cm; mass, 37.7 ± 6.6 kg; body mass index, 18.6 ± 2.9) who performed back handsprings (analyzed by first

Spatiotemporal gait parameters and ground reaction force analysis in female non-gymnasts versus gymnasts during adolescence and university stages.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Gymnastics requires balance, coordination, and flexibility, making it both enjoyable and challenging. However, ensuring safety is crucial to prevent injuries. This study aimed to assess key spatiotemporal gait parameters, including cadence, velocity, stride length, cycle time, and step width, in conjunction with the anteroposterior ground reaction force (GRF-X) across five sub-phases of the gait cycle, in female gymnasts and non-gymnasts during the adolescence and university stages. METHODS: In this study, 40 participants were recruited and categorized into two primary gro

Specific injuries induced by the practice of trampoline, tumbling and acrobatic gymnastics.

PURPOSE: The recreational and competitive practice of acrobatic sports, that is, trampoline, tumbling and acrobatic gymnastics (ACRO), is growing rapidly around the world. Many studies described the injuries affecting young artistic gymnasts, but only few concerned acrobatic sports. METHODS: During a 5-year period, 357 traumatic events were collected in young acrobats practicing trampoline, tumbling or ACRO. Accident characteristics, level of expertise and training, injury location (upper limb, spine and lower limb), type of tissue injured (bone, cartilage, muscle, ligament and tendon) and pr

[Several endocrine aspects of duodenal stasis in the process of therapeutic gymnastics].

The levels of TTH, T3, T4 and testosterone were studied in 65 female patients suffering from chronic duodenitis with concomitant hypertensive duodenal stasis, stages I and II. A significant increase in the content of the hormones under study was revealed. Subclinical hyperthyroidism was determined by the formation of the irritative autonomic (sympathicotonic) syndrome as a result of irritation of the sympathetic nerve fibers of the celiac plexus due to the presence of inflammation at the duodenojejunal junction. This condition was attended by the predominance of catabolic processes (thyroid ho

Anatomy and biomechanics of the shoulder in throwing, swimming, gymnastics, and tennis.

As the most mobile joint in the body, the shoulder is structurally insecure. The ball-shaped humeral head rotates and glides on a shallow scapular cup. A limited amount of passive stability is provided by the glenoid labrum, which slightly deepens the scapular cup, and by ligaments reinforcing the capsule on its superior and anterior surfaces. At peak maturity ligamentous restraint equals 50 to 80 kg. These structural limitations indicate that the primary source of joint stability must be balanced muscle control. Joint compression is the major factor. This is supplemented by active tangential

The Young Injured Gymnast: A Literature Review and Discussion.

Gymnastics is a sport requiring grace, strength, and flexibility, resulting in a wide variety of injuries. This article is an overview of the sport of gymnastics and associated injury trends in the artistic gymnastics population. Injury rates in gymnastics range from 1.08 to 50.3 per 1000 h of exposure. More injuries occur in competition versus practice. Fewer injuries occur in recreational gymnastics than competitive gymnastics. The most common injury in gymnastics occurs in the lower extremity, and is an ankle sprain, followed by knee internal derangement. However, in men's gymnastics the mo

Somatotype of top-level serbian rhythmic gymnasts.

Body size and build influence performance in many sports, especially in those belonging to the group of female aesthetic sports (rhythmic gymnastics, artistic gymnastics, and figure skating). These sports pose high specific demands upon the functional, energy, motor and psychological capacities of athletes, but also upon the size, body build and composition of the performers, particularly of the top-level female athletes. The study of the top athletes (rhythmic gymnasts, in this case) may provide valuable information on the morphological requirements for achieving success in this sport. Theref

Lumbar lordosis in female collegiate dancers and gymnasts.

OBJECTIVE: Postural deviations can predispose an individual to increased injury risk. Specifically, lumbar deviations are related to increased low back pain and injury. Dancers and gymnasts are anecdotally suggested to have exaggerated lumbar lordosis and subsequently may be at increased risk of lumbar pathologies. Our objective was to examine lumbar lordosis levels in dancers and gymnasts. METHODS: We examined lumbar lordosis in 47 healthy collegiate females (17 dancers, 29 gymnasts; mean age 20.2 ± 1.6 yrs) using 2-dimensional sagittal plane photographs and the Watson MacDonncha Posture Ana

Bilateral knee pain in a high-level gymnast.

Gymnast wrist or distal radial physeal injury is a common entity among gymnasts of all levels. It can lead to chronic pain, inability to perform, and growth issues at the wrist for these young athletes. However, less has been reported about other overuse stress injuries in this group. We present the case of a prepubescent female gymnast complaining of chronic bilateral knee pain. She was found to have bilateral distal femoral physeal stress injuries and had a similar clinical course to any gymnast diagnosed with the same injury at the wrist.

Radiological abnormalities and low back pain in gymnasts.

Several studies have shown a higher prevalence of radiological abnormalities among gymnasts. However, the types of radiological abnormalities associated with low back pain (LBP) have not been clarified. The hypothesis was that significant relationships between radiological abnormalities and LBP may be revealed by discriminating between the types of MRI abnormalities while considering confounding factors. The subjects were 104 Japanese collegiate gymnasts (men, 70; women, 34). The presence of LBP was evaluated using the questionnaire developed by Osaka City University (OCU Test). Magnetic reson
