The cerebellum monitors errors and entrains executive networks.

Frontal midline θ (Fmθ) activity occurs in medial prefrontal cortices (mPFC), when expected and actual outcomes conflict. Cerebellar forward models could inform the mPFC about this mismatch. To verify this hypothesis we correlated the mPFC activation during a visuomotor tracking task (VM) with performance accuracy, in control and cerebellum-lesioned participants. Additionally, purely visual (V), motor (M) and a motor plus visual tasks (V + M) were performed. An Independent Component, with a mid-frontal topography scalp map and equivalent dipole location in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex

Increased functional connectivity of amygdala subregions in patients with drug-naïve panic disorder and without comorbidities.

BACKGROUND: Amygdala plays an important role in the neurobiological basis of panic disorder (PD), and the amygdala contains different subregions, which may play different roles in PD. The aim of the present study was to examine whether there are common or distinct patterns of functional connectivity of the amygdala subregions in PD using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and to explore the relationship between the abnormal spontaneous functional connectivity patterns of the regions of interest (ROIs) and the clinical symptoms of PD patients. METHODS: Fifty-three drug-naïve,

Adrenergic signalling to astrocytes in anterior cingulate cortex contributes to pain-related aversive memory in rats.

Pain contains both sensory and affective dimensions. We identify the role of norepinephrine in colorectal distention (sub-threshold for acute pain) induced conditioned place avoidance and plasticity gene expression in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). Activating locus coeruleus (LC)-projecting ACC neurons facilitates pain-evoked aversive consolidation and memory, while inhibiting LC-projecting ACC neurons reversibly blocks it. Optogenetic activation of ACC astrocytes facilitates aversive behaviour. ACC astrocytic Gi manipulation suppressed aversive behaviour and early plasticity gene expres

Distinct ACC Neural Mechanisms Underlie Authentic and Transmitted Anxiety Induced by Maternal Separation in Mice.

It is known that humans and rodents are capable of transmitting stress to their naive partners via social interaction. However, a comprehensive understanding of transmitted stress, which may differ from authentic stress, thus revealing unique neural mechanisms of social interaction resulting from transmitted stress and the associated anxiety, is missing. We used, in the present study, maternal separation (MS) as a stress model to investigate whether MS causes abnormal behavior in adolescence. A key concern in the analysis of stress transmission is whether the littermates of MS mice who only wi

Effort avoidance as a core mechanism of apathy in frontotemporal dementia.

Apathy is a core symptom in patients with behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). It is defined by the observable reduction in goal-directed behaviour, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. According to decision theory, engagement in goal-directed behaviour depends on a cost-benefit optimization trading off the estimated effort (related to the behaviour) against the expected reward (related to the goal). In this framework, apathy would thus result from either a decreased appetence for reward, or from an increased aversion to effort. Here, we phenotyped the motivatio

Effective connectivity and criminal sentencing decisions: dynamic causal models in laypersons and legal experts.

This magnetic resonance imaging study is designed to obtain relevant implications for criminal justice and explores the effective connectivity underlying expertise. Laypersons and experts considered sentences for remorseful and remorseless defendants, respectively, with and without mitigation, in hypothetical murder cases. Two groups revealed no differential activation. However, dynamic causal modeling analysis found distinct patterns of connectivity associated with subjects' expertise and mitigating factors. In sentencing for remorseful defendants, laypersons showed increased strength in all

Regional spectral ratios as potential neural markers to identify mild cognitive impairment related to Alzheimer's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Alzheimer's disease (AD) has prolonged asymptomatic or mild symptomatic periods. Given that there is an increase in treatment options and that early intervention could modify the disease course, it is desirable to devise biological indices that may differentiate AD and nonAD at mild cognitive impairment (MCI) stage. METHODS: Based on two well-acknowledged observations of background slowing (attenuation in alpha power and enhancement in theta and delta powers) and early involvement of posterior cingulate cortex (PCC, a neural hub of default-mode network), this study devised novel ne

Imitation encourages empathic capacity toward other individuals with physical disabilities.

Many people have difficulty empathizing with others who have dissimilar characteristics, such as physical disabilities. We hypothesized that people with no disabilities imitating the movements of individuals with disabilities could improve the empathic capacity toward their difficulties. To evaluate this hypothesis, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to measure the neural activity patterns of 26 healthy participants while they felt the difficulties of individuals with hemiplegia by adopting their perspective. The participants initially either imitated or observed hemiplegic hand mov

Reduced cortical neuron number and neuron density in schizophrenia with focus on area 24: a post-mortem case-control study.

Structural and functional abnormalities of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) have frequently been identified in schizophrenia. Alterations of von Economo neurons (VENs), a class of specialized projection neurons, have been found in different neuropsychiatric disorders and are also suspected in schizophrenia. To date, however, no definitive conclusions can be drawn about quantitative histologic changes in the ACC in schizophrenia because of a lack of rigorous, design-based stereologic studies. In the present study, the volume, total neuron number and total number of VENs in layer V of area 24

Medial and orbital frontal cortex in decision-making and flexible behavior.

The medial frontal cortex and adjacent orbitofrontal cortex have been the focus of investigations of decision-making, behavioral flexibility, and social behavior. We review studies conducted in humans, macaques, and rodents and argue that several regions with different functional roles can be identified in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, perigenual anterior cingulate cortex, anterior medial frontal cortex, ventromedial prefrontal cortex, and medial and lateral parts of the orbitofrontal cortex. There is increasing evidence that the manner in which these areas represent the value of the e

Negative valence of hallucinatory voices as predictor of cortical glutamatergic metabolite levels in schizophrenia patients.

OBJECTIVES: Negative emotional valence of auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) in schizophrenia can be a source of distress and is considered a strong predictor of illness severity. Previous studies have found glutamate to mediate AVH severity in frontal and temporal brain regions, however, they do not specifically address emotional valence of AVH. The role of glutamate for the experience of negative- versus positive emotional valence of AVH is therefore unknown and was investigated in the current study. METHODS: Using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), 37 schizophrenia patients had Glx

Afferent Connections of Cytoarchitectural Area 6M and Surrounding Cortex in the Marmoset: Putative Homologues of the Supplementary and Pre-supplementary Motor Areas.

Cortical projections to the caudomedial frontal cortex were studied using retrograde tracers in marmosets. We tested the hypothesis that cytoarchitectural area 6M includes homologues of the supplementary and pre-supplementary motor areas (SMA and pre-SMA) of other primates. We found that, irrespective of the injection sites' location within 6M, over half of the labeled neurons were located in motor and premotor areas. Other connections originated in prefrontal area 8b, ventral anterior and posterior cingulate areas, somatosensory areas (3a and 1-2), and areas on the rostral aspect of the dorsa

Whole-brain morphological alterations associated with trigeminal neuralgia.

BACKGROUND: Novel neuroimaging strategies have the potential to offer new insights into the mechanistic basis for trigeminal neuralgia (TN). The present study aims to conduct whole-brain morphometry analyses of TN patients and to assess the value of group-level neocortical and subcortical structural patterns as tools for diagnostic biomarker exploration. METHODS: Cortical thickness, surface area, and myelin levels in the neocortex were measured via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The radial distance and the Jacobian determinant of the subcortex in 43 TN patients and 43 matched controls were

Altered brain functional network dynamics in classic trigeminal neuralgia: a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating studies have indicated a wide range of brain alterations with respect to the structure and function of classic trigeminal neuralgia (CTN). Given the dynamic nature of pain experience, the exploration of temporal fluctuations in interregional activity covariance may enhance the understanding of pain processes in the brain. The present study aimed to characterize the temporal features of functional connectivity (FC) states as well as topological alteration in CTN. METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and three-dimensional T1-weighted images were

Aberrant global and local dynamic properties in schizophrenia with instantaneous phase method based on Hilbert transform.

BACKGROUND: Emerging functional imaging studies suggest that schizophrenia is associated with aberrant spatiotemporal interaction which may result in aberrant global and local dynamic properties. METHODS: We investigated the dynamic functional connectivity (FC) by using instantaneous phase method based on Hilbert transform to detect abnormal spatiotemporal interaction in schizophrenia. Based on resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, two independent datasets were included, with 114 subjects from COBRE [51 schizophrenia patients (SZ) and 63 healthy controls (HCs)] and 96 from Open

Retrograde amnesia of contextual fear conditioning: Evidence for retrosplenial cortex involvement in configural processing.

It has been suggested that contextual fear conditioning can be supported by either an elemental system, where individual features of the environment are associated with shock, or a configural system, where environmental features are bound together and associated with shock. Although the retrosplenial cortex (RSC) is known to be involved in contextual fear conditioning, it is not clear whether it contributes to the elemental or configural system. To isolate the role of the RSC in contextual fear conditioning, the current experiments examined the influence of RSC lesions on the context preexposu

Distributed learning episodes create a context fear memory outside the hippocampus that depends on perirhinal and anterior cingulate cortices.

Damage to the hippocampus (HPC) typically causes retrograde amnesia for contextual fear conditioning. Repeating the conditioning over several sessions, however, can eliminate the retrograde amnesic effects. This form of reinstatement thus permits modifications to networks that can support context memory retrieval in the absence of the HPC. The present study aims to identify cortical regions that support the nonHPC context memory. Specifically, the contribution of the perirhinal cortex (PRH) and the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) were examined because of their established importance to context

The cingulate cortex and limbic systems for action, emotion, and memory.

Different limbic structures including the hippocampal memory system and the amygdala/orbitofrontal emotion system have very different connectivity and functions, and it has been suggested that we should no longer think of a single limbic system. A framework is provided for understanding the connectivity and functions of different parts of the cingulate cortex in action, emotion, and memory, in the context of connections of different parts of the cingulate cortex with other limbic and neocortical structures. First, the anterior cingulate cortex receives information from the orbitofrontal cortex

Von Economo Neuron Loss in Frontotemporal Dementia: A Meta-Analysis of Neuropathological Studies.

Von Economo neurons (VENs) have been reported to be vulnerable to neurodegeneration in frontotemporal dementia (FTD), particularly the behavioral variant (bvFTD), but these findings have not been systematically assessed across independent brain banks. We conducted a meta-analysis of neuropathological studies measuring VEN density in the anterior cingulate cortex or frontoinsular cortex in FTD using random-effects models with cluster-robust variance estimation. Seven studies (135 FTD, 68 controls) from four international brain banks showed significantly reduced VEN density in FTD with a large e

Cortical mechanism of emotional pain.

Most basic and clinical research on chronic pain has traditionally focused on the mechanisms and treatment of physical pain resulting from peripheral injuries in individual animals or humans. However, growing evidence highlights the importance of emotional pain, a form of distress that extends beyond the individual to include family members, partners, and friends affected by another's suffering. In this review, I summarize recent advances in animal models of empathic pain and explore cortical synaptic mechanisms underlying this form of social or emotional pain. I compare the cortical processes
