Surveillance after introduction of Haemophilus influenzae serotype b vaccination in Spain identified 26 H. influenzae serotype e (HiE) isolates. Of these, 16 (61.5%) were recovered from patients aged >16 years and 10 (38.5%) from children <16 years of age. HiE caused respiratory infections in 14 patients (9 with pneumonia), conjunctivitis in 4, vaginitis in 2, abscess in 2, and cellulitis, peritoneal infection, sepsis and meningitis in 1 patient each. HiE was strongly clonal and highly resistant to ampicillin and cotrimoxazole, and the incidence of HiE infection did not increase over time.

A retrospective study was conducted on invasive Haemophilus influenzae infections in adults (greater than or equal to 16 years) for the period 1971-1983 in two regions in Sweden. The annual incidence was determined to be 1.1 per 100,000. Predisposing factors included advanced age, bronchopulmonary diseases, alcoholism, traumatic head injury, malignant diseases and pregnancy. Pleuropulmonary infections were the most common manifestations followed by epiglottitis, meningitis and septicaemia of unknown origin. A death rate of 8% was established. Both encapsulated and non-typable strains were foun

Nose and throat swabs, for culture of Haemophilus influenza type b, and blood samples, for measurement of antibodies specific for that serotype, were collected from members of 28 families from which children had been admitted to hospital with acute H. influenzae type b infections (mainly meningitis or epiglottitis). The patients with meningitis were younger than those with epiglottitis and had more siblings, with a marked predominance of sisters. Investigations within a few days of admission of the affected children to hospital detected carriers of H. influenzae type b (19 altogether) in 13 of

BACKGROUND: Haemophilus influenzae has frequently been identified as the etiologic agent in pneumonias of patients with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The experience of the authors is reviewed and the significance of isolating this microorganism in respiratory samples commented upon.
METHODS: The clinical, radiological and microbiological data of patients with HIV infection in whom H. influenzae was identified in blood, lung tissue, or samples of the lower respiratory tract obtained by fibrobronchoscopy were retrospectively evaluated.
RESULTS: Twenty cases were diagnosed w

BACKGROUND: Tryptophan plays a key role in regulating human lung homeostasis and immunity through the indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) and aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) signalling pathways. In patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), altered IDO and AhR activity is observed, potentially favouring infection by pathogens capable of synthesizing their own tryptophan. In this study, we investigated the contribution of tryptophan availability to lung infection by Haemophilus influenzae, a tryptophan synthesizing pathobiont associated with COPD exacerbations.
METHODS: A chemic

SUMMARYHaemophilus ducreyi is a Gram-negative coccobacillus that forms a distinct lineage with Aggregatibacter pleuropneumoniae and Mannheimia haemolytica within the Pasteurellaceae. H. ducreyi causes chancroid, which is characterized by painful genital ulcers (GU) and inguinal lymphadenitis, and facilitates the transmission of HIV. Although once thought to be exclusively sexually transmitted, H. ducreyi is now recognized as a major cause of non-sexually transmitted cutaneous ulcers (CU) on the lower legs of children who live in yaws-endemic areas. Due to the impact of chancroid on global heal

We report a case of Fisher's syndrome with serological evidence of antecedent Haemophilus influenzae infection. A 66-year-old woman developed unsteady gait and multiple cranial nerve palsies after upper respiratory infection. Serum anti-GQ 1 b and anti-GT 1 a IgG antibodies were positive. In the acute phase of the illness, her serum had high titers of IgM, IgG and IgA anti-H. influenzae antibodies, which significantly decreased during the clinical course. Further study is needed to clarify the clinical and immunological features of Fisher's syndrome after H. influenzae infection.

Haemophilus influenzae is a small, nonmotile, non-spore-forming bacterium, and a strict parasite of humans found principally in the upper respiratory tract. The production of capsule is of major significance to clinicians since it is an important virulence factor. We described six antigenically distinct capsular types, designated a-f. Spread from one individual to another occurs by airborne droplets or by direct contagion with secretions. Haemophilus influenzae produces at least two factors that inhibit the ciliary activity of human epithelial cells in vitro. One of this has been shown to be l

This paper reviews the role of Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) as one of the most important pathogens causing invasive infectious diseases, especially in the first 2 years of life. In developing countries H. influenzae is responsible for 30% of all pneumonia cases with positive cultures and for 20% to 60% of all bacterial meningitis cases. In this study we compared Brazilian and international epidemiologic data obtained from several bibliographic databases (MEDLINE, 1966 to 1995; LILACS, 1982 to 1995; Thesis Databank, 1980 to 1995; and Dissertation Abstracts, 1988 to 1994). BACKGROUND: Amnionitis rarely occurs with intact membranes. Haemophilus influenzae is a rare pathogen in intra-amniotic infection, but its importance and prevalence could be increasing, as reflected by the growing number of reported cases in the last 20 years.
METHODS: Using the key words "amnionitis," "intra-amniotic infection," "chorioamnionitis," and "Haemophilus influenzae," we searched MEDLINE files from 1980 to the present. Articles dating before 1980 were accessed from cross-reference of the more recent studies.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: H. influenzae, a nonmotile, aerobic, gram-negati

Four cases of neonatal haemophilus influenzae have been reported in Intensive Care Unite of Timone's Hospital (Marseille) during a 2 year period. Three of the cases were due to non typable organism, one was a type III. Hemoculture was positive twice. None of the patients had meningitis. Clinically it was a neonatal septicemia without particularity. Prognosis is bad (50% mortality). Several hypothesis have been proposed to explain the increase of the frequency of this neonatal infection. One of the major problem is the choice and the moment of prescription of antibiotherapy.

We report two children with ventriculoperitoneal shunt infections due to Haemophilus influenzae, type b. One child was cured with systemic and intraventricular antimicrobial therapy alone. The other child had persistently positive ventricular fluid cultures, ultimately required shunt removal in addition to antimicrobial therapy, and still had a relapse, which responded to antimicrobial therapy alone. In treating children with this problem we recommend removal of the shunt apparatus unless there is prompt sterilization of ventricular fluid and clinical improvement. Systemic antimicrobial therap

Haemophilus influenzae serotype b (Hib) was previously the most common cause of bacterial meningitis and an important etiologic agent of pneumonia in children aged <5 years. Its major virulence factor is the polyribosyl ribitol phosphate (PRP) polysaccharide capsule. In the 1980s, PRP-protein conjugate Hib vaccines were developed and are now included in almost all national immunization programs, achieving a sustained decline in invasive Hib infections. However, invasive Hib disease has not yet been eliminated in countries with low vaccine coverage, and sporadic outbreaks of Hib infection still

We performed a retrospective study of all patients in a large health maintenance organization in Southern California who were identified as having positive blood cultures for Haemophilus organisms during a 20-month period (September 1990 to May 1992) to assess the incidence, presentation, and predisposing conditions of bacteremia due to these organisms and to examine some of the features of these infections in the elderly. Thirty-eight patients with bacteremia due to haemophilus infections were identified. Ten (26.3%) patients were 65 years of age or older. The incidence of bacteremic haemophi

Three hundred thirty seven Haemophilus influenza isolates from infections in children were studied to determine the relationship between H. influenza, biotype III, and specimen source. Eighteen per cent (60) of the isolates were H. influenza biotype III. Of these, 70% were from the eye, 18% from the respiratory tract, 7% from the ear and 2% from blood. Although conjunctivitis was the most common clinical condition associated with H. influenza biotype III, three cases of systemic infection with this organism are presented: a 10-month-old female with pneumonia, a 17-year-old male with sepsis, an

Haemophilus influenzae (H. influenzae) is a facultative anaerobe, pleomorphic Gram-negative coccobacillus capable of causing various respiratory and blood stream infections. Introduction of childhood immunization against H. influenza type b has decreased its prevalence. Invasive infection with non-typeable H. influenzae is increasing specially in vulnerable population. We present a case of a 69-year-old female who developed septic shock due to H. influenzae infection. She was also found to have influenza A infection in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) sample although initial test with nasopharynge

Acute otitis media, inflammation of the middle ear bulla, is the most common bacterial infection in children. For one of the principal otopathogens, non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi), animal models allow us to investigate host-microbial interactions relevant to the onset and progression of infection and to study treatment of middle ear disease. We have established a robust model of NTHi middle ear infection in the Junbo mouse. Intranasal inoculation with NTHi produces high rates of bulla infection and high bacterial titers in bulla fluids; bacteria can also spread down the respiratory
