Induction of IgA against Haemophilus parainfluenzae antigens in tonsillar mononuclear cells from patients with IgA nephropathy.

Much evidence suggests that IgA production in vivo and in vitro is enhanced in patients with IgA nephropathy (IgAN). We have demonstrated glomerular deposition of the outer membranes of Haemophilus parainfluenzae (HP) antigens (OMHP) and the presence of HP-specific IgA in the serum of patients with IgAN. In this study, we investigated the production of IgA and several cytokines by tonsillar mononuclear cells (TMC) from IgAN patients induced by stimulation with OMHP. The spontaneous production of total IgA and TGF-beta by TMC from IgAN patients was higher than that by TMC from patients with chr

Haemophilus parainfluenzae biliary tract infection: rationale for an ascending route of infection from the gastrointestinal tract.

Haemophilus parainfluenzae was isolated from a bile specimen of a 56-year-old patient with elevated liver enzymes and chronic cholecystitis. Several factors contributing to nonbacteremic H. parainfluenzae infection of the biliary tract include (i) the not infrequent occurrence of H. parainfluenzae in stool specimens, (ii) the presence of an outer membrane protein similar to those found in enteric bacteria which facilitates adherence to the colonic mucosa, and (iii) an adequate supply of V factor (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) supplied from bile and the local flora, which is necessary for

Utilization of enterobactin and other exogenous iron sources by Haemophilus influenzae, H. parainfluenzae and H. paraphrophilus.

The ability of Haemophilus influenzae, H. parainfluenzae and H. paraphrophilus to utilize iron complexes, iron-proteins and exogenous microbial siderophores was evaluated. In a plate bioassay, all three species used not only ferric nitrate but also the iron chelates ferric citrate, ferric nitrilotriacetate and ferric 2,3-dihydroxybenzoate. Each Haemophilus species examined also used haemin, haemoglobin and haem-albumin as iron sources although only H. influenzae could acquire iron from transferrin or from haemoglobin complexed with haptoglobin. None of the haemophili obtained iron from ferriti

Nasopharyngeal and Adenoid Colonization by Haemophilus influenzae and Haemophilus parainfluenzae in Children Undergoing Adenoidectomy and the Ability of Bacterial Isolates to Biofilm Production.

Haemophili are pathogenic or opportunistic bacteria often colonizing the upper respiratory tract mucosa. The prevalence of Haemophilus influenzae (with serotypes distribution), and H. parainfluenzae in the nasopharynx and/or the adenoid core in children with recurrent pharyngotonsillitis undergoing adenoidectomy was assessed. Haemophili isolates were investigated for their ability to biofilm production.Nasopharyngeal swabs and the adenoid core were collected from 164 children who underwent adenoidectomy (2-5 years old). Bacteria were identified by the standard methods. Serotyping of H. influen

Exploring Competitive Relationship Between Haemophilus parainfluenzae and Mitis Streptococci via Co-Culture-Based Molecular Diagnosis and Metabolomic Assay.

Various bacterial strains with nitrate-reducing capacity (NRC), such as Haemophilus, Actinomyces, and Neisseria, are known to promote NH3 production, control pH in the oral cavity, and inhibit the growth of aciduric bacteria. However, experimental evidence on various estimated bacterial networks within the salivary microbiome is insufficient. This study aims to explore potential bacterial compositional competition observed within saliva samples from dental caries patients through a co-culture assay of mitis Streptococci, which is a primary colonizer in the salivary microbiome, and nitrate-redu

Haemophilus Parainfluenzae Septic Arthritis Following Primary All-Inside Meniscus Repair: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Background: Haemophilus parainfluenzae (H. parainfluenzae) is a gram-negative rod that inhabits the oral cavity. It is a common cause of respiratory tract infections and rarely is responsible for musculoskeletal infections in immunocompetent hosts. We present a case of a 17-year-old male whose postoperative course following arthroscopic all-inside meniscus repair was complicated with H. parainfluenzae septic arthritis. The infection was successfully cleared with two arthroscopic irrigation and debridements and antibiotic therapy. The patient successfully returned to full-contact high school fo

Prevalence of susceptibility patterns of opportunistic bacteria in line with CLSI or EUCAST among Haemophilus parainfluenzae isolated from respiratory microbiota.

The application of CLSI and EUCAST guidelines led to many discrepancies. Various doubts have already appeared in preliminary stages of microbiological diagnostics of Haemophilus spp. A total of 87 H. parainfluenzae isolates were obtained from throat or nasopharyngeal swabs from adults 18 to 70 years old, both healthy volunteers and patients with chronic diseases between 2013 to 2015 in eastern Poland. Haemophilus spp. were identified by colony morphology, Gram-staining, API NH and MALDI-TOF MS technique. Both susceptibility to various antimicrobials and phenotypes of Haemophilus spp. resistanc

Detection of blaCTX-M-15 in an integrative and conjugative element in four extensively drug-resistant Haemophilus parainfluenzae strains causing urethritis.

Haemophilus parainfluenzae is a commensal organism with rising numbers of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains. This pathogen is of increasing clinical relevance in urogenital infection. The aim of this work was to identify and characterise the molecular mechanisms of resistance associated with four cephalosporin-resistant H. parainfluenzae strains collected from patients with urethritis. Antimicrobial resistance was determined by microdilution following European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing criteria. Strains were then analysed by whole-genome sequencing to determine clonal r

Typing of urogenital, maternal, and neonatal isolates of Haemophilus influenzae and Haemophilus parainfluenzae in correlation with clinical source of isolation and evidence for a genital specificity of H. influenzae biotype IV.

Over a period of 6 years, 114 strains of Haemophilus influenzae and Haemophilus parainfluenzae were isolated from genital, mother-infant, or neonatal infections. Their serotypes, biotypes, antibiotic resistance phenotypes, and outer membrane protein (OMP) electrophoretic patterns were characterized and correlated with the various clinical outcomes. Genital H. influenzae and H. parainfluenzae appeared to behave mostly as opportunistic pathogens; for instance, 62% of the cases of endometritis or pelvic inflammatory disease were related to the presence of an intrauterine device. However, as seen

Haemophilus parainfluenza-Associated Aortic Root Abscess and Septic Embolic Stroke Post-transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: A Case Study.

We present a rare instance of aortic root abscess and septic embolic stroke due to Haemophilus parainfluenza in a 75-year-old male patient who had undergone a recent transcatheter aortic valve replacement. The patient initially presented with generalized weakness and altered mental status. Blood cultures grew Haemophilus parainfluenza. Brain imaging showed multiple infarcts with some areas of hemorrhagic conversion. Echocardiography demonstrated an aortic root abscess as well as vegetation on the tricuspid valve. Surgical correction was deemed high risk; hence, management involved intravenous

Selective expansion of T cell receptor (TCR) V beta 6 in tonsillar and peripheral blood T cells and its induction by in vitro stimulation with Haemophilus parainfluenzae in patients with IgA nephropathy.

IgA nephropathy (IgAN), the most common form of primary glomerulonephritis, is recognized as a disease that often becomes worse during acute tonsillitis. Although many reports have shown that tonsillectomy is an effective treatment for IgAN patients, the immunological evidence has not yet been investigated fully. In this study, we compared the expression of T cell receptor (TCR) V beta families in tonsillar T cells of IgAN patients to those of non-IgAN patients. The reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and flow cytometric analyses showed that the TCR V beta 6 was used more

[On the phenotypical characteristics of haemophilus isolates from human respiratory tract (author's transl)].

50 strains of hemophilic bacteria from the human upper respiratory tract were studied using morphological, physiological, and biochemical features including respiratory quinones. The isolates were associated with the conventional species Haemophilus influenzae, H. parainfluenzae and H. aegyptius. They were grouped into the proposed biovarieties of the Influenzae- and Parainfluenzae-groups according to Kilian's classification. The heterogeneous group of Aegyptius-strains was not classified in detail, and the taxonomic position of one haemophilus-like strain which required blood serum for growth
