A field test of the dilution effect hypothesis in four avian multi-host pathogens.

The Dilution Effect Hypothesis (DEH) argues that greater biodiversity lowers the risk of disease and reduces the rates of pathogen transmission since more diverse communities harbour fewer competent hosts for any given pathogen, thereby reducing host exposure to the pathogen. DEH is expected to operate most intensely in vector-borne pathogens and when species-rich communities are not associated with increased host density. Overall, dilution will occur if greater species diversity leads to a lower contact rate between infected vectors and susceptible hosts, and between infected hosts and suscep

High diversity and novel host associations of bat haemosporidian parasites in Cambodia: insights from a nationwide bat survey and multilocus analyses.

BACKGROUND: Haemosporidian ("malaria") parasites are a diverse group of vector-borne apicomplexan parasites that infect a wide range of vertebrate hosts, including humans. Bats harbour a remarkable diversity of haemosporidians and are considered important hosts in the evolution of mammalian haemosporidian lineages, yet parasite diversity, host associations, and evolutionary relationships remain poorly understood, particularly in biodiversity-rich Southeast Asia. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide molecular survey of 1180 bats representing 34 species across Cambodia and combined extensive samp

Ectoparasite and blood parasite prevalence in birds: a comparative study between urbanized airport environments and natural habitats.

The rapid growth of urban populations and air travel has intensified urbanization's ecological impacts, reshaping ecosystems through habitat fragmentation, pollution, and species filtering. These effects are particularly evident in urban bird populations. In this study, we examined how urban environments, especially near airports, affect birds by evaluating relationships among parasites, feather corticosterone levels, and body condition. We hypothesized that birds near airports would experience higher parasite prevalence due to stress-related immune compromise. We sampled 1,096 birds from 100

Haemosporidian Parasite Infections and Host-Feeding Preferences of Hematophagous Insects Collected at the Birds of Prey Nests With Confirmation of Vectors for Haemoproteus spp. and Leucocytozoon sp.

Avian haemosporidian parasites, such as Haemoproteus, Leucocytozoon, and Plasmodium are transmitted by blood-sucking insects and can negatively affect their host. These parasites have specific life cycles that allow them to survive and spread efficiently through their vectors. However, the research on vectors and their feeding preferences are scarce. Therefore, in this study, we investigated haemosporidian parasite vectors and their feeding preferences in insects collected at birds of prey nests. To catch the vectors, UV-light traps were hung at the nests of birds of prey between June and July

AVIAN HAEMOSPORIDIANS IN GREATER SCAUP (AYTHYA MARILA) AND LESSER SCAUP (AYTHYA AFFINIS) FROM WISCONSIN.

Avian haemosporidians are a diverse group of protozoan parasites that infect a wide range of host species. Waterfowl are an ecologically and economically important group of hosts that have been underrepresented in studies of haemosporidians. Diving ducks have unique life history traits, and morphological, behavioral, and dietary differences separate them from more common dabbling ducks. Greater scaup (Aythya marila) and lesser scaup (Aythya affinis) are closely related diving ducks with declining population trends in North America. To better understand the diversity of haemosporidians within d

Molecular detection of vector-borne pathogens from mosquitoes collected in two zoological gardens in Germany.

In Germany, knowledge of disease agents transmitted by arthropods in zoological gardens is scarce. In the framework of ecological studies, mosquitoes were therefore collected in German zoological gardens and examined for mosquito-borne pathogen DNA and RNA. In total, 3840 mosquitoes were screened for filarial nematodes and three groups of viruses (orthobunyaviruses, flaviviruses, alphaviruses) while 405 mosquitoes were tested for avian malaria parasites. In addition to the filarial nematode species Dirofilaria repens (n = 1) and Setaria tundra (n = 8), Sindbis virus (n = 1) and the haemosporid

Molecular Detection of Haemosporidian Parasites of Birds in Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae) in Kuwait.

A molecular surveillance of haemosporidian parasites from 19,521 Culex pipiens (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae) from Kuwait detected 2 pools with a unique Haemoproteus ( Haemoproteus) sp. (Haemospororida: Haemoproteidae) most likely parasitizing columbiform birds and probably representing contaminated blood meals or aborted infections in mosquitoes. Haemoproteus spp. have been previously reported in Kuwait based on microscopic examination of avian blood smears. This paper reports on molecular detection and subgenus-level identification of a novel Haemoproteus ( Haemoproteus) sp. Mosquitoes are not kn

Age-specific patterns of infection with haemosporidians and trypanosomes in a warbler: implications for sexual selection.

Although the selective loss of individuals susceptible to disease can favor the evolution of female preference for older males, the interrelationship between age, infection, longevity, and mating success remains poorly characterized in natural populations. In a longitudinal study of 61 male common yellowthroats (Geothlypis trichas), we found that the probability of infection with hematozoa increased as males aged from 1 to 5 years. Despite a significant, negative association between infection and longevity that partially masked age-effects, the odds that a male was infected with Trypanosoma, P

Inhabiting the host: ectoparasites and Vector-Borne pathogens in Phyllostomidae bats within urban forest fragments.

While bats are known to harbor various viruses and bacteria, their role as hosts for hemoparasites has not been extensively studied. This research investigated the presence of ectoparasites and vector-borne pathogens-including Anaplasmataceae agents, hemoplasmas, apicomplexans, and kinetoplastids-in 74 Phyllostomidae bats sampled from an urban forest fragment in southeastern Brazil. Overall, 31.1% of the bats were infested with ectoparasites: 82.6% carried only Streblidae bat flies, 13.0% had only mites, and 4.4% were co-infested with both parasites. No hemoparasites were observed in Giemsa-st

Why Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum are so different? A tale of two clades and their species diversities.

The global malaria burden sometimes obscures that the genus Plasmodium comprises diverse clades with lineages that independently gave origin to the extant human parasites. Indeed, the differences between the human malaria parasites were highlighted in the classical taxonomy by dividing them into two subgenera, the subgenus Plasmodium, which included all the human parasites but Plasmodium falciparum that was placed in its separate subgenus, Laverania. Here, the evolution of Plasmodium in primates will be discussed in terms of their species diversity and some of their distinct phenotypes, putati

Subtle stressors-Strong responses. Consistent negative effects of avian blood parasites on phenotypic and demographic traits across songbirds.

Stressors that subtly yet persistently deplete energetic resources-such as heat, pollutants or parasites-are well studied in laboratory and clinical settings, where their physiological effects are often well understood, yet their influence on phenotypic and demographic traits in free-living populations remains critically understudied. A prominent example is pathogens and parasites that cause sublethal infections, often considered as relatively benign, particularly in species adapted to their presence. However, parasite-induced effects on phenotypic and demographic traits are often inconsistent

Blood parasites of passerines in the Brazilian Pampas and their implications for a potential population supplementation program for the endangered Yellow Cardinal (Gubernatrix cristata).

Espinilho savanna ("seasonal steppe savanna") is a unique vegetation formation of the Pampas biome that is found near the tri-border of Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. The Yellow Cardinal (Gubernatrix cristata) is a flagship species of this ecosystem, but it is classified as "critically endangered" in Brazil due to habitat loss and poaching for the illegal trade. Population supplementation through the release of individuals that were captive-bred or apprehended by authorities from the illegal trade has been considered as a conservation strategy for this species; however, the risk of pathogen i

The first clinical cases of Haemoproteus infection in a snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus) and a goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) at a zoo in the Republic of Korea.

This study reports two clinical cases of avian haemosporidian infection caused by a Haemoproteus sp., involving a snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus) and a goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), at a zoo. The snowy owl died after presenting with anorexia, depression and lethargy. A blood smear with Wright's staining confirmed Haemoproteus infection. Necropsy of the snowy owl revealed hypertrophy of the internal organs, including the liver, gallbladder, kidney and adrenal glands. The goshawk showed anorexia, depression and a lowered head position, and was diagnosed with a Haemoproteus infection based on a blood

PCR detection of malaria parasites and related haemosporidians: the sensitive methodology in determining bird-biting insects.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge about feeding preference of blood-sucking insects is important for the better understanding epidemiology of vector-borne parasitic diseases. Extraction of DNA from blood present in abdomens of engorged insects provides opportunities to identify species of their vertebrate hosts. However, this approach often is insufficiently sensitive due to rapid degeneration of host DNA in midguts. Recent studies indicate that avian malaria parasites (Plasmodium spp.) and related haemosporidians (Haemosporida) belonging to Haemoproteus can persist both in vectors and resistant blood-suc

HAEMOSPORIDIANS AS POTENTIAL SOURCES OF GEOGRAPHIC MARKERS FOR IRRUPTIVE BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES.

Migratory birds can carry parasites thousands of miles, and therefore their parasite communities may provide an informative means of ascertaining the breeding and wintering locations of their hosts. However, avian parasites (particularly haemosporidians) are rarely used for this purpose because their usefulness is conditional upon knowing where and when birds acquired them during their annual cycles. In this study, we evaluated haemosporidian assemblages among non-resident black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus), which occasionally "irrupt" south from parts of their northern distributio

Avian haemosporidian parasites in the African houbara: Species diversity and impact on blood parameters.

Avian haemosporidia are vector-borne protozoan parasites with effects ranging from asymptomatic infections to acute disease and are often influenced by host‒parasite dynamics and environmental factors. These parasites can disrupt haematological parameters, affecting host fitness and survival. The African houbara (Chlamydotis undulata), a vulnerable species supported by a conservation breeding program in Morocco, faces combined threats from habitat loss, unregulated hunting, and poaching. This study investigated the diversity, prevalence and potential factors of haemosporidian infections in cap

First case of fatal leucocytozoonosis in domestic ducks in a zoological garden in Japan.

Leucocytozoon spp. are common avian haemosporidian parasites that can cause clinical symptoms with lethal cases in poultry worldwide. However, leucocytozoonosis has not been reported in domestic ducks (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) in Japan. Two adult domestic ducks maintained in a zoological garden in Japan became lethargic, exhibited labored breathing, and died in July 2024. These ducks had hemorrhages in the visceral organs with splenomegaly and hepatomegaly. Megaloschizonts of haemosporidia were histologically observed in the spleen and other organs. Partial sequences of Leucocytozoon mit
