A case of severe methemoglobinemia caused by hair dye poisoning.

CONTEXT: Hair dyes are widely used and very popular xenobiotics. Most of these products contain paraphenylenediamine (PPD) that can cause methemoglobinemia. We here report a case of severe methemoglobinemia that we treated using large amounts of methylene blue. CASE DETAILS: A 30-year-old man visited a regional hospital with cyanosis. He was congenitally blind and had autism. For several weeks, he had mistaken hair dye for toothpaste. When he arrived at a regional hospital, he was drowsy with cyanosis and his initial serum methemoglobin (MetHb) level was 59.5%. After being treated with 2 mg/k

Significance of hair-dye base-induced sensory irritation.

Oxidation hair-dyes, which are the principal hair-dyes, sometimes induce painful sensory irritation of the scalp caused by the combination of highly reactive substances, such as hydrogen peroxide and alkali agents. Although many cases of severe facial and scalp dermatitis have been reported following the use of hair-dyes, sensory irritation caused by contact of the hair-dye with the skin has not been reported clearly. In this study, we used a self-assessment questionnaire to measure the sensory irritation in various regions of the body caused by two model hair-dye bases that contained differen

Myocardial damage in hair dye poisoning--an uncommon presentation.

A 22-year-old female presented to us after consuming hair dye with features of angio-neurotic edema, asphyxia and irregular pulse. Serial ECGs revealed presence of ST segment elevation and T wave inversion in anterior chest leads. Strongly positive c-troponin-T test further confirmed the myocardial damage. This is a rare manifestation of para-phenylene diamine poisoning mentioned in literature. Patient also had elevated liver enzymes and oliguria.

Severe allergic hair dye reactions in 8 children.

Serious adverse skin reactions to permanent hair dyes and temporary black tattoos have been reported. As temporary tattoos have become fashionable among adolescents, the risk profile for p-phenylenediamine (PPD) sensitization of the population has changed simultaneously with an increasing use of hair dyes in this age group. This investigation reports PPD sensitization in children with regard to cause of sensitization, clinical presentation and consequences. Clinical history and patch test results for consecutive children below 16 years of age with suspected hair dye allergic reactions and posi

Bladder cancer risk and personal hair dye use.

Several cohort and case-control studies have found an increased risk of bladder cancer among hairdressers and barbers who are occupationally exposed to hair dyes. However, the carcinogenic risk associated with personal use of hair dyes remains uncertain since several large case-control and cohort studies did not find an association between personal hair dye use and bladder cancer. To address this question, the authors used data collected on 459 bladder cancer cases and 665 controls who were interviewed as part of a case-control study conducted in New Hampshire between 1994 and 1998. Hypertrophic allergic contact dermatitis from hair dye.

We report a case of hypertrophic allergic contact dermatitis probably due to p-phenylenediamine (PPDA) in a 26-year-old female, which developed at the sites of application of a black hair dye to the skin. Histological examination revealed an eczematous process. The lesions subsided completely except for leukoderma that remained on the leg. Patch tests showed positive reactions to PPDA, p-aminophenol and Disperse Orange 3. PPDA, which was one of the components of the dye, was considered to be the primary sensitizer because it was the only substance able to reproduce at the patch test site both

Assessing the dyeing efficiency and irritation potentials of plant hair dyes: A multi-analytical in vitro approach.

BACKGROUND: The interest toward dyeing hairs with plant colorants has grown in popularity considering its low-toxic nature. However, researches reporting plant hair dyes are limited and the potential adverse effects of irritation are unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study is aimed to provide an avenue by which to more accurately assess the dyeing efficiency and irritation potentials of plant hair dyes. METHODS: Four extracted plant colorants were incorporated in hydrogel hair dyes that were directly applied on unbleached gray human hairs. Their dyeing performances and the effect of an iron (Ⅱ) mord

A clinical evaluation of a permanent hair dye designed to reduce allergic contact dermatitis and hair damage.

BACKGROUND: Permanent hair dye is the most commonly used anti-aging procedure used by both men and women. However, permanent hair dye can cause irritant contact dermatitis due to ammonia and allergic contact dermatitis due to paraphylenediamine (PPD). METHODS: This research examined an ammonia-free and PPD-free permanent hair dye in 50 ethnically diverse females 21-91 years of age who were current users of permanent hair dyes. Subjects were patch tested prior to dyeing. Two dye sessions were undertaken at baseline and 2-6 weeks post-baseline depending on the dyeing habits of the subject. RES

Toxicity of hair dyes in experimental in vivo animal models: a systematic review.

The increasing use of hair dyes reinforces the need to identify potential toxicological hazards associated with their constituents and formulations. These products may release aromatic amines that, after dermal absorption, can induce oxidative stress and cellular damage, with potential cytotoxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic effects. We reviewed in vivo evidence on toxicological hazards associated with isolated hair dye ingredients and finished commercial formulations in experimental animal models. Searches were conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Scopus, without language or year r

Hydrogen peroxide and monoethanolamine are the key causative ingredients for hair dye-induced dermatitis and hair loss.

BACKGROUND: Hair dyes are being commonly used to change the color of hair for cosmetic reason. However, concern is growing over the dermatitis and subsequent hair loss associated with the repeated use of hair dye products, yet the causative ingredients have not been elucidated. OBJECTIVE: Here we investigated hair dye-induced dermatitis and hair loss using in vivo mouse model to uncover the causative ingredients. METHODS: Commercially available hair dye products or combination of the ingredients of hair dye product were applied topically for 3 days on the dorsum of the female C57BL/6 mice an

Occupational asthma, rhinitis, and contact urticaria caused by oxidative hair dyes in hairdressers.

BACKGROUND: Oxidative hair dyes commonly contain paraphenylene diamine (PPD) and its derivatives, a well-known cause of delayed hypersensitivity among both consumers and hairdressers. They are also considered possible causes of occupational respiratory diseases. Despite the widespread use of hair dyes, there are only a few reports of asthma, rhinitis, and contact urticaria caused by PPD and related compounds. OBJECTIVE: To characterize patients with occupational asthma, rhinitis, or contact urticaria associated with oxidative hair dyes and to evaluate the diagnostic methods. METHODS: We revi

Personal use of hair dyes--increased risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in Thailand.

The use of hair dyes has been inconsistently associated with an increased risk of lymphomas. To further evaluate this possibility, we examined hair dye use and lymphoma risk in a case-control study in the Thai population. A total of 390 histologically confirmed incident non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) cases and 422 controls were included. Information on hair dye use was obtained through a personal interview together with information on other known risk factors of lymphoma. Analysis was performed using logistic regression; odds ratios (ORs) estimates and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculat

Contact sensitivity to hair dyes can be detected by the consumer open test.

To avoid allergic reactions to hair dyes, an open test ("skin sensitivity test" or "dab test") is recommended 48 hours before the hair colouring procedure. We have investigated in a multicenter study, under standardized conditions and medical supervision, the validity of this test as a practical method to detect allergy to paraphenylenediamine (PPD)-containing hair dyes in 30 PPD patch test-positive and 30 PPD patch test-negative subjects. A defined volume of a marketed hair colouring product containing 1.8% PPD was applied in an open patch test to the retroauricular area. The grading method c

Topical liposome targeting of dyes, melanins, genes, and proteins selectively to hair follicles.

For therapeutic and cosmetic modification of hair, we have developed a hair-follicle-selective macromolecule and small molecule targeting system with topical application of phosphatidylcholine-based liposomes. Liposome-entrapped melanins, proteins, genes, and small-molecules have been selectively targeted to the hair follicle and hair shafts of mice. Liposomal delivery of these molecules is time dependent. Negligible amounts of delivered molecules enter the dermis, epidermis, or bloodstream thereby demonstrating selective follicle delivery. Naked molecules are trapped in the stratum corneum an
