INTRODUCTION: Natural hallucinogens have been known since ancient times and were widely used in religious, shamanic, and folk rituals, as well as in traditional medicine. These compounds originate from plants, animals, and fungi and exhibit considerable diversity. Different groups of substances vary in their mechanisms of action, receptor responses, effects induced, and therapeutic applications. Hallucinogens are misused worldwide to achieve specific sensations and altered states of consciousness; therefore, their inves- tigation is necessary to assess safety and predict long-term consequences

Current treatments for addiction are frequently ineffective. Hallucinogenic therapy has been indicated as helpful for a range of substance use disorders, yet this approach remains understudied and publicly unavailable. It is nonetheless a promising treatment, which has significant, long-term beneficial effects with single doses and a profile characterized by general safety, low toxicity, and non-addictiveness. However, pharmacological interventions, such as hallucinogens, should not be offered if the same effects (e.g. psychological insights/mystical experiences) and outcomes (e.g. decreased d

Interest in and use of hallucinogens appears to be growing in the United States, yet less is known about the use of multiple hallucinogens. The aims of this study are to characterize subgroups of lifetime hallucinogen use and to identify sociodemographic correlates of these subgroups. Latent class models were fit using 2021-2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) data on a sub-sample of individuals who reported having ever used any hallucinogen (n = 17,977). A four-class model identified the following subgroup classes: Psilocybin (16%), LSD/Psilocybin (46%), Ecstasy (23%), and a fo

Anticholinergic drugs based on tropane alkaloids, including atropine, scopolamine, and hyoscyamine, have been used for various medicinal and toxic purposes for millennia. These drugs are competitive antagonists of acetylcholine muscarinic (M-) receptors that potently modulate the central nervous system (CNS). Currently used clinically to treat vomiting, nausea, and bradycardia, as well as alongside other anesthetics to avoid vagal inhibition, these drugs also evoke potent psychotropic effects, including characteristic delirium-like states with hallucinations, altered mood, and cognitive defici

Atropine and scopolamine are classical muscarinic cholinergic antagonists that exert multiple CNS effects. Belonging to a group of deliriant hallucinogens, these drugs induce delirium-like hallucinations, hyperactivity, altered affective states and amnesia. However, as deliriants remain the least studied group of hallucinogens, their complex and poorly understood profiles necessitate further clinical and preclinical studies. The zebrafish (Danio rerio) is rapidly emerging as a powerful model organism for translational neuropsychopharmacology research. Here, we characterize acute behavioral eff

Tryptamine produces pharmacologic effects in man and the chronic spinal dog which are similar to those produced by LSD, mescaline, psilocin, DMT, DOM and DOB. These effects include tachycardia, tachypnea, mydriasis, hyperreflexia, behavioral changes and in man, hallucinations. Chronic spinal dogs treated chronically with LSD became tolerant to its ability to produce mydriasis, tachycardia, tachypnea and hyperreflexia, and were cross tolerant to the ability of tryptamine, psilocin, mescaline, DMT, DOM and DOB to produce these same effects. Further, it was found that the brain and spinal cord co

Although psychedelic and hallucinogenic substances have gained popularity for therapeutic use, their dermatologic adverse effects are poorly characterized. This review characterizes the cutaneous reactions associated with psychedelic and hallucinogenic drugs. A review of PubMed and Scopus was conducted from the inception of databases to August 31, 2023. Search terms included drug names and classes (cannabis, MDMA, ecstasy, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, psychedelics, hallucinogens, peyote, marijuana, lysergic acid diethylamide, LSD, ketamine, dimethyltryptamine, DMT, phencyclidine, PCP, de

BACKGROUND: Hallucinogen use is rising in the US, yet little is known regarding the prevalence and psychosocial/behavioral correlates of driving under the influence of these drugs.
METHODS: This study examined data from 4447 individuals ages 16-64 who reported past-year hallucinogen use in the 2016-2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Prevalence estimates (with 95% confidence intervals [CIs]) were calculated for driving under the influence of hallucinogens (DUIH). Logistic regression examined psychosocial/behavioral correlates of DUIH, and latent class analysis (LCA) characterized sub

Background: Current drug policy debates often center on whether hallucinogen-related hospital admissions indicate a causal relationship with psychosis. This study examines the extent to which observed associations between hallucinogen use and psychosis are mediated by preexisting psychiatric conditions, providing important evidence for psychedelic policy formulation. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis using MarketScan Medicaid and commercial claims databases from 2015-2019. The population-based sample included individuals receiving substance use disorder treatment with documented s

There has been an increasing interest in the use of classic psychedelics (such as psilocybin) and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) for treating mental health conditions. Individuals often describe psychedelic sessions as among the most significant experiences in their lives, emphasizing the sense of awe, connectedness, and spiritual transformation taking place. While the psychedelic literature from the past two decades has mostly focused on using these drugs in the treatment of major depressive, anxiety, and substance use disorders, researchers have also investigated the utility of cla

The development of new drugs addressing serious mental health and other disorders should avoid the psychedelic experience. Analogs of psychedelic drugs can have clinical utility and are termed "psychoplastogens". These represent promising candidates for treating opioid use disorder to reduce drug dependence, with rarely reported serious adverse effects. This drug abuse cessation is linked to the induction of neuritogenesis and increased neuroplasticity, a hallmark of psychedelic molecules, such as lysergic acid diethylamine. Some, but not all psychoplastogens may act through the G-protein coup

Hallucinogen-persisting perception disorder (HPPD), also known as acute hallucinogen-induced psychosis or informally known as "flashbacks," is an unusual condition experienced by patients due to the use of different hallucinogenic substances. Hallucinogen-persisting perception disorder causes many symptoms, predominantly persistent visual perception distortion instead of intermittent distortion. Although different hallucinogens could cause HPPD, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and LSD-like properties seem to be the most common hallucinogens causing the symptoms. In our case report, the patien

RATIONALE: 4-Iodo-2,5-dimethoxy-N-(2-methoxybenzyl)phenethylamine (25I-NBOMe) is a potent serotonin 5-HT2A/2C receptor agonist with hallucinogenic activity. There is no data on the 25I-NBOMe effect on brain neurotransmission and animal performance after chronic administration.
OBJECTIVES: We examined the effect of a 7-day treatment with 25I-NBOMe (0.3 mg/kg/day) on neurotransmitters' release and rats' behavior in comparison to acute dose.
METHODS: Changes in dopamine (DA), serotonin (5-HT), acetylcholine (ACh), and glutamate release were studied using microdialysis in freely moving rats. The

The constituents of seven mushrooms sold as Amanita muscaria or Amanita pantherina (five A. muscaria and two A. pantherina) and four "extracts purported to contain A. muscaria" products that are currently circulated in Japan were determined. All mushroom samples were identified as A. muscaria or A. pantherina by macroscopic and microscopic observation. The dissociative constituents, ibotenic acid (IBO) and muscimol (MUS), were extracted with 70% methanol twice and determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The IBO (as the hydrate)/MUS contents were in the range of <10-2845ppm/46-1052p

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We compared characteristics of schizophrenia patients with prior LSD use who developed hallucinogen persisting perception disorder (SCH+HPPD) with those who did not (SCH-HPPD).
METHODS: Data were collected for 37 subjects in the SCH+HPPD group and 43 subjects in the SCH-HPPD group.
RESULTS: Socio-demographics and positive symptom scores were similar between groups. Individuals in the SCHIZO+HPPD group scored lower on general psychopathology and negative symptoms scores.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with schizophrenia and HPPD present with less severe ps

Methoxetamine is one of the constantly growing group of novel psychoactive substances that has emerged in recent years. The compound belongs to the arylcyclohexylamine class, which is used for its recreational and psychedelic effects. Methoxetamine is a structural analogue of ketamine, with a much longer duration of action and intensity of effects, and has been extensively advertised as its 'legal' and 'bladder friendly' alternative. This review surveys the current state of knowledge regarding the metabolism, pharmacology, prevalence and pattern of methoxetamine use, and analytical methods of

"Foxy methoxy" (chemical name, 5-methoxy-N,N-diisopropyltryptamine) is a hallucinogenic tryptamine that has been abused with increasing frequency since its appearance in the late 1990s. Like other drugs in this class, foxy frequently produces feelings of euphoria, disinhibition, and auditory as well as visual hallucinations. The drug has been linked to adverse effects, including restlessness, agitation, gastrointestinal distress, and muscle tension. In light of the relatively recent advent of foxy as a drug of abuse and given the inability of commercial toxicologic screening tests to detect th
