There is a paucity of objective information in the literature about first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) hemiarthroplasty. The authors postulate that it is a reasonable treatment option for severe hallux rigidus in selected patients. Twenty-two elective first MTP hemiarthroplasties were performed on 20 patients that met the inclusion criteria. Pre- and postoperative evaluations were done using the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) forefoot score, visual analogue scale (VAS) pain score, range of motion (ROM) measurements, and radiographs. Average ROM and dorsiflexion improved by 15

Seven patients (seven feet) were evaluated at an average follow-up of 42 months following soft-tissue interposition arthroplasty of the hallux metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint for severe hallux rigidus. The technique involved reaming of the base of the proximal phalanx and metatarsal head to decompress the first MTP joint and placement of a soft-tissue tendon bundle as a biologic spacer. Six of seven patients had bilateral disease, and a positive family history of hallux rigidus. At final follow-up, all seven patients rated their result as good or excellent, the level of pain was substantially

BACKGROUND: This study compared radiographic and functional patient outcomes of 1st MTP arthrodesis between hallux rigidus (HR) and hallux valgus (HV) cohorts.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted at an academic medical center on patients who underwent 1st MTP arthrodesis during 2009-2021. In total, 136 patients (148 feet: HR=57, HV=47, combined=44) met the inclusion criteria of minimum three-month follow-up (mean=1.25 years, range=0.25-6.14 years). Data collection included patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), radiographic markers, and complication and reoperation rates.

Metatarsus elevatus and gastrocnemius tightness contribute to the development of functional hallux rigidus. Although several osteotomies have been described for functional hallux rigidus, certain osteotomies are commonly used in practice for the correction of functional hallux rigidus, a long first metatarsal or an elevated metatarsal, or an unstable tarsometatarsal joint. Proximal plantarflexion osteotomy is used only in the presence of an elevated first metatarsal with a limit to dorsiflexion but without the presence of arthritis at the first metatarsophalangeal joint. In the presence of art

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: In a retrospective study, to evaluate the results of surgical treatment of hallux rigidus on the basis of clinical rating, radiographic findings and visual analogue scale (VAS).
MATERIAL: The group included 68 patients, 38 women and 30 men, treated at the orthopaedic ward of the Hospital Ceské Budejovice in the period from April 2004 to June 2007. The average age of the patients was 58.6 years (range, 34 to 79). Right and left feet were affected in 42 and 26 patients, respectively. Follow-up ranged from 3 to 30 months.
METHODS: Surgery was undertaken only after all mean

STUDY DESIGN: Case study of the management of an individual with hallux rigidus deformity.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the outcome of nonoperative and operative treatment, including kinematic and kinetic changes following cheilectomy surgery, for an individual with hallux rigidus deformity.
BACKGROUND: Hallux rigidus is a common disorder of the first metatarsophalangeal joint characterized by progressive limitation of hallux dorsiflexion, prominent dorsal osteophyte formation, and pain. Surgery may be considered when nonoperative management strategies have proven unsuccessful. Kinematic and plant

The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the outcome of cheilectomy for patients with grades 1, 2, and 3 hallux rigidus according to Regnauld's classification. We evaluated 39 patients at a mean of 3.8 years after surgery for pre- versus postoperative changes in pain, activity level, difficulties with footwear, tiptoe walking, and metatarsophalangeal joint range of motion. We used Wilcoxon paired rank tests to compare outcomes for each grade of hallux rigidus. There was significant improvement (p < 0.05) in pain, activity level, tiptoe walking, and range of motion for all three grades

Hallux rigidus results from arthritic involvement of the first metatarsophalangeal joint. The authors have observed loss of motion at this joint in patients with rheumatoid arthritis in the absence of hallux valgus or joint destruction. A hyperextension deformity of the interphalangeal joint has also been observed, with a painful callus beneath it. The first metatarsophalangeal joint appears normal on roentgenograms, and passive motion of the joint is normal when it is examined clinically. The loss of first metatarsophalangeal motion is functional, and stems from muscle spasm of the great toe

Hallux rigidus can present a difficult problem to both competitive and elite athletic populations. Once an appropriate diagnostic workup has been performed, nonoperative management strategies, including anti-inflammatory medications, injection therapies, shoewear modifications, and orthotic devices, represent the mainstay conservative management options. Surgical management can be considered where an athlete's athletic performance is limited. A joint-sparing cheilectomy can provide a predictable return to sport at the most elite levels. The addition of a proximal phalangeal osteotomy can be co

Hallux rigidus is the most commonly occurring arthritic condition of the foot and is marked by pain, limited motion in the sagittal plane of the first metatarsophalangeal joint and varying degrees of functional impairment. In conjunction with clinical findings, radiographic grading helps guide therapeutic choices. Nonsurgical management with anti-inflammatory medications, corticosteroid injections, or shoewear and activity modifications can be successful in appropriately selected patients. Patients with more severe disease or refractory to conservative management may benefit from surgical inte

The condition of hallux limitus is well understood and agreed on as visualized histologically and radiographically. But the historically described pathophysiology and anatomy that predisposes to hallux limitus has been challenged. Numerous investigators have proposed anatomic abnormalities of the foot as a primary cause of this condition, but perhaps trauma is the only unanimously agreed on cause. However, this accounts for only a small percentage of cases. To strive for better treatment outcomes, understanding the pathophysiology, assessing patient risk factors, and recognizing causative agen

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the outcomes of interposition arthroplasty performed for the treatment of hallux rigidus.
METHODS: The study included 19 feet (4 left, 15 right) of 17 patients (14 females, 3 males; mean age 61+/-5 years; range 55 to 71 years) who were treated with interposition arthroplasty for hallux rigidus. According to the grading system of Coughlin and Shurnas, 18 feet were grade 3, one foot was grade 4. One-third of the base of the proximal phalanx was resected at surgery. Preoperative and postoperative radiographic assessments included the measurements of the joint space width

INTRODUCTION: Metatarsophalangeal joint osteoarthritis of the great toe (hallux rigidus) is a frequent condition for which numerous surgical techniques have been proposed. The most used ones are cheilectomy and arthrodesis. The objectives of this retrospective study are to present the midterm results of the Valenti procedure and to compare these results with those from other recognized surgical techniques.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of a continuous group of 32 patients (41 cases) presenting hallux rigidus and treated using the Valenti technique from November

Manipulation of the metatarsophalangeal joint and injection with steroid and local anaesthetic are widely practised in the treatment of hallux rigidus, but there is little information on the outcome. We report the results of this procedure carried out on 37 joints, with a minimum follow-up of one year (mean, 41.2 months). Patients with mild (grade-1) changes gained symptomatic relief for a median of six months and only one-third required surgery. Two-thirds of patients with moderate (grade-2) disease proceeded to open surgery. In advanced (grade-III) hallux rigidus, little symptomatic relief w
