INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Congenital hallux varus (CHV) is a very rare foot deformity, defined by the medial deviation of the great toe at the metatarsophalangeal joint. It can appear in isolation or with other anomalies, such as polydactyly, metatarsus adductus, or a longitudinal epiphyseal bracket. However, an association with a ventricular septal defect (VSD) has not been described before. Early surgical correction is essential to restore function, improve cosmetic appearance, and support normal motor development.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 13-month-old male presented with congenital right

We have used an extensor hallucis brevis tenodesis procedure to treat symptomatic hallux varus in six patients (five women and one man). Indications for this procedure include the presence of flexible metatarsophalangeal and interphalangeal joints and the absence of arthritis. In this group (mean age, 47 years; range, 18-65 years), hallux varus followed correction of hallux valgus deformity in five patients and traumatic dislocation of the hallux in one patient. Excellent correction was noted and maintained in all patients at a mean interval of 28 months (range, 24-32 months) after surgery. De

The post operative iatrogenic hallux varus associates varus, big toe's dorsal flexion and supination. The pathogeny is dominated by musculo-tendinous lack of balance created by the initial operation and excessive exostosectomy. The authors have nineteen times surgically corrected this deformation. The procedure included in all cases, a medial arthrolysis; five times associated with a screwed capito-metatarsal osseous shelf (or graft) (when there was a metatarsal's head maiming); thirteen times associated with a metatarso-phalangeal arthrodesis (in cases of impaired joint surfaces). The authors

Arthroscopic first metatarsophalangeal arthrodesis for fixed hallux varus deformity can be very difficult because narrowing of the medial joint space results in difficult access. The abductor hallucis tendon and the medial capsule can be released through a small proximal plantar medial incision. This will convert the deformity into a flexible one and open up the medial joint space. This allows arthroscopic arthrodesis using the standard dorsolateral and medial portals. The plantar medial incision can also be used for arthroscopy of the metatarsosesamoid compartment and insertion of a screw for

Hallux varus and clawing are occasionally seen after a McBride procedure, due to the severance of the flexor hallucis brevis, when the lateral sesamoid is removed. The present study includes six patients, (involving ten feet), who developed hallux varus and great toe clawing after McBride procedures were performed by various orthopedic surgeons. Treatment utilized partial proximal phalangeal resection, with and without silicone single-stem implants, extensor hallucis longus tendon transfer to the great toe metatarsal, and interphalangeal joint arthrodesis, or tenodesis of the great toe to corr

Forefoot injuries are commonly caused by sport-related activities and are often around the metatarsophalangeal joints. The hallux interphalangeal (IP) joint is anatomically stable; therefore, injuries to this joint are considered to be rare compared with those to the metatarsophalangeal joint. Instability of the hallux IP joint has rarely been reported in barefoot contact sports, and its treatment has not been sufficiently explored. This study investigated chronic varus instability of the hallux IP joint. We performed a surgical reconstruction owing to conservative treatment failure. A good sur

OBJECTIVE: To explore clinical effect of minimally corrective osteotomy for the treatment of hallux valgus with deformity of little toe varus through small incision.
METHODS: From January 2013 to June 2016, 168 hallux valgus patients with deformity of little toe varus were treated by minimally corrective osteotomy through small incision. Among them, 7 males and 161 females were aged from 22 to 75 years old with an average of(59.3±3.5) years old. Preoperative clinical manifestation mainly focus on red and swollen of bunion, pain around with metatarsal bones, and diagnosed as hallux valgus with

INTRODUCTION: Congenital hallux varus of secondary type is associated with polydactyly, syndactyly or other congenital deformities of the foot. Such congenital deformities can be addressed in childhood with soft tissue reconstructive procedures. In adulthood, treatment of these deformities is challenging because of soft tissue contractures and rigid bony deformities. To our knowledge, this is the first case report demonstrating the management of neglected secondary congenital hallux varus in adults.
CASE REPORT: We present here a case of a 23 years old male patient who presented to us with un

Post-burn hallux varus is an extremely rare condition. A 22-year-old male, with a history of campfire burns in childhood, presented with secondary hallux varus of the left great toe. Surgical correction included medial soft tissue release, metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodesis, two-pin fixation of bones, metatarsophalangeal joint capsulorrhaphy, and coverage of the skin defect with a "Z" plasty of the skin and split thickness skin grafting. Follow up 20 months later showed satisfactory results.

The Cedell procedure consists of: a proximal valgus osteotomy of the first metatarsal bone to correct the metatarsus primus varus, a soft tissue plasty at the first metatarsophalangeal joint with lateral release, and tightening of the medial capsule to correct the hallux valgus. A total of 45 operations in 31 patients (2 men and 29 women) were performed. Forty-one of these operations were followed. The average age at surgery was 24 years (range 16 to 43 years), and the average follow-up time was 23 months (range 8 to 56 months). The postoperative decrease in the intermetatarsal angle averaged

In cases of hallux valgus tendon transfer combined with wedge osteotomy of metatarsus I yields good results. Considering the experience of 36 operated feet in 25 patients the operation can be recommended especially for young patients. An exact technique helps to avoid complications such as hallux varus and delayed ossification of the osteotomy.

A 74-year-old Japanese woman who underwent Mann's procedure with fibular sesamoidectomy for left hallux valgus 21 years ago complained of left hallucis pain. She was diagnosed with iatrogenic hallux varus and hammer toe deformities. Metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodesis and shortening oblique osteotomy were performed. After surgery, the hallux valgus angle improved from -28° to 0°, and the intermetatarsal angle between the first and the second metatarsus improved from 0° to 6°. The Japanese Society for Surgery of the Foot RA foot and ankle scale improved from 73 to 81 points. She could walk wi

Hallux varus is usually iatrogenic in nature; however, congenital and acquired etiologies have been described in the literature. The authors present a case of traumatic hallux varus secondary to rupture of the adductor tendon. Surgical correction was performed using a soft tissue anchor for maintenance of the soft tissues utilized for repair.

Hallux varus is most commonly seen iatrogenically following overaggressive lateral release, removal of the fibular sesamoid, or overaggressive removal of the medial eminence. There are several reported cases of traumatic hallux varus, although this is much less common. We present a case of traumatic hallux varus in a patient who was later found to have bilateral absence of her fibular sesamoids. We postulated that lack of her fibular sesamoid led to weakness of her lateral capsular ligaments, thereby making her more susceptible to this injury. We performed a repair using a split extensor hallu

A new operation for hallux valgus consists of a horizontally directed "V" displacement osteotomy done in the head of the first metatarsal. This procedure corrects most of the primus varus, the valgus tilt of the articular surface of the first metatarsal and, if present, the axial rotation of the great toe. The osteotomy is combined with a release and balancing of soft-tissue structures on both sides of the joint. No casting and usually no internal fixation is necessary. Ambulation is generally recommended on the third postoperative day. The operative techniques, indications for surgery, clinic

Hallux valgus interphalangeus deformity has been previously reported in the literature following trauma and first metatarsophalangeal joint fusion. However, to the best of our knowledge, hallux varus interphalangeus deformity has not been previously reported. We present the case of a 26-year-old skeletally mature woman who sustained an acute, open hallux varus interphalangeus injury following an osteochondral fracture of the medial head of the proximal phalanx.

Chronic varus instability of the hallux interphalangeal joint is a rare injury, and only a few reports of this injury have been published. In some studies, this injury has been related to taekwondo. Taekwondo is an essential martial art in the Korean military. We have described a case of varus instability of the hallux interphalangeal joint in a professional soldier who had practiced taekwondo for 5 years and the surgical outcome after reconstruction of the lateral collateral ligament with the fourth toe extensor tendon.
