Epilithic and endolithic microorganisms and deterioration on stone church facades subject to urban pollution in a sub-tropical climate.

Weathering of two church facades in Rio de Janeiro was caused substantially by salts, mainly halite and gypsum, detected by SEM and chemical analyses, which cause physical stresses by deposition within the rock. Biofilm populations, determined by SEM and as operational taxonomic units (OTUs), degraded stone by penetration, solubilization and redeposition of minerals on their surfaces. Endolithic cyanobacteria were associated with gypsum deposits. Microbiomes were typical for high-stress environments, high salt, intense insolation, low water and low nutrients (eg halophilic Rubrobacter, Salinic

Salar del Hombre Muerto, source of lithium-tolerant bacteria.

The Salar del Hombre Muerto is a flat salt with great microbial activity despite the existing extreme conditions like high altitude, lack of water, low level of oxygen, high radiation and high concentration of sodium and lithium chloride. Despite these unfavorable conditions, we found microbial diversity with the presence of fungi, algae, and bacteria. From aqueous solutions and soil samples, a total of 238 bacteria were isolated and 186 of them were able to grow in the presence of salt. About 30% of the strains showed the ability to grow in solid medium proximally to a LiCl solution close to

Degradation of the microbial stress protectants and chemical chaperones ectoine and hydroxyectoine by a bacterial hydrolase-deacetylase complex.

When faced with increased osmolarity in the environment, many bacterial cells accumulate the compatible solute ectoine and its derivative 5-hydroxyectoine. Both compounds are not only potent osmostress protectants, but also serve as effective chemical chaperones stabilizing protein functionality. Ectoines are energy-rich nitrogen and carbon sources that have an ecological impact that shapes microbial communities. Although the biochemistry of ectoine and 5-hydroxyectoine biosynthesis is well understood, our understanding of their catabolism is only rudimentary. Here, we combined biochemical and

The Antimicrobial and Cytotoxic Activity of Green-Synthesized Silver Nanoparticle Extract of Marine Bacteria and Their 16S rRNA Identification and Characterization.

Marine bacteria represent a substantial underexplored reservoir of bioactive metabolites with significant biomedical potential. Through 16S rRNA gene sequencing, this study identified four bacterial isolates associated with the marine sponge Callyspongia siphonella. They were Gammaproteobacterium, Idiomarina sp., Halomonas sp., and Oceanobacillus kapialis. The isolates were used to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in an environmentally friendly way. Subsequently, the antibacterial and cytotoxic activities of these nanoparticles were evaluated. All biosynthesized AgNPs were very small (7

ETfinder: harnessing conserved C-terminal tails of single-stranded DNA-binding proteins for mining and engineering RecET systems in non-model microbial chassis.

Nonmodel microorganisms offer substantial potential as next-generation microbial chassis (NGMCs), yet most lack efficient and broadly transferable genome-editing systems. Here we present ETfinder, a framework that uses the conserved C-terminal tail of host single-stranded DNA-binding proteins (SSB-Ct) as a biochemical constraint to guide the discovery of RecET recombineering systems. Applied to Rhodobacter sphaeroides, ETfinder identified 91 candidates from 18 841 α-proteobacterial genomes, and all five experimentally tested RecT homologs supported measurable double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) recomb

Bioremediation of cadmium-phoxim co-contamination by an autochthonous pollutant-resistant consortium enhances Ligusticum Chuanxiong Hort. resistance.

Prominent cadmium (Cd) pollution and widespread phoxim (pH) use hinder the growth and medicinal value of Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. (Chuanxiong). While bioremediation by rhizobacteria helps plants counter pollutants, the specific roles of indigenous resistant consortia collected from polluted soils in immobilizing heavy metals, degrading pesticides, and enhancing plant stress tolerance remain insufficiently explored. Here, an indigenous pollutant-resistant consortium (RM) was developed from a highly Cd-polluted area (14.85 mg/kg Cd) as a bioremediation strategy to alleviate stress on Chuanxio

Bile reflux alters the profile of the gastric mucosa microbiota.

BACKGROUND: Bile reflux can cause inflammation, gastric mucosa atrophy, and diseases such as stomach cancer. Alkaline bile flowing back into the stomach affects the intragastric environment and can alter the gastric bacterial community. We sought to identify the characteristics of the stomach mucosal microbiota in patients with bile reflux. METHODS: Gastric mucosal samples were collected from 52 and 40 chronic gastritis patients with and without bile reflux, respectively. The bacterial profile was determined using 16S rRNA gene analysis. RESULTS: In the absence of H. pylori infection, the ri

Degradation of Hydrocarbons and Heavy Metal Reduction by Marine Bacteria in Highly Contaminated Sediments.

Investigations on the ability of bacteria to enhance removal of hydrocarbons and reduce heavy metal toxicity in sediments are necessary to design more effective bioremediation strategies. In this study, five bacterial strains, Halomonas sp. SZN1, Alcanivorax sp. SZN2, Pseudoalteromonas sp. SZN3, Epibacterium sp. SZN4, and Virgibacillus sp. SZN7, were isolated from polluted sediments from an abandoned industrial site in the Gulf of Naples, Mediterranean Sea, and tested for their bioremediation efficiency on sediment samples collected from the same site. These bacteria were added as consortia or

Skin bacterial richness and diversity in intensive care unit patients with severe pneumonia.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with severe pneumonia admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) have a high risk of mortality, and the microbiome is likely to affect the outcome of such patients. However, the composition of the skin microbiota of ICU patients with severe pneumonia remains unclear. In this study, on the basis of 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid sequencing, we explored the difference in skin bacterial richness and diversity between the ICU patient group (PG) with severe pneumonia and the healthy control group (CG). METHODS: The diversity index and taxonomic distribution of skin bacteria wer

The microbiomes of adenoid and middle ear in children with otitis media with effusion and hypertrophy from a tertiary hospital in China.

INTRODUCTION: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is one of the most common pediatric diseases worldwide. Several studies have analyzed the diversity of the microbiomes found in the middle ear effusions (MEEs) of populations from developed countries. However, no microbiological studies of MEEs from Chinese children with OME have been reported. This study investigated the middle ear and adenoid microbiological profiles of children with OME, and compared the microbial flora of the adenoid between children with and without otitis media. METHODS: MEEs and adenoid swabs were acquired from 15 children

Comparative Insights into Bacterial Endophytome and Antifungal Metabolites in Fusarium Wilt-Resistant and -Susceptible Banana Cultivars Unveil the Resistance Toward Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense.

India contributes 26% of global banana production, yet cultivation is severely threatened by Fusarium wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense, Foc), necessitating sustainable, eco-friendly management strategies. This study evaluated the biocontrol potential of endophytic bacteria isolated from Foc-resistant and -susceptible banana cultivars. Isolates from the pseudostem, corm, and root of the resistant cultivar showed significantly greater inhibitory activity than those from the susceptible cultivar, underscoring the role of host genotype in shaping functionally competent endophytic communitie

Genome analysis of a coral-associated bacterial consortium highlights complementary hydrocarbon degradation ability and other beneficial mechanisms for the host.

Here we report the oil degradation genetic potential of six oil-degrading bacteria (ODB), previously used as a bioremediation consortium, isolated from the hydrocoral Millepora alcicornis and seawater. The strains were identified as Halomonas sp. (LC_1), Cobetia sp. (LC_6), Pseudoalteromonas shioyasakiensis (LC_2), Halopseudomonas aestusnigri (LC_3), Shewanella algae (LC_4), and Brucella intermedia (LC_5). The taxonomic identification differed from that of the original paper when we used whole genome gene markers instead of just 16S rRNA gene. Genes responsible for the degradation of aromatic

Postbiotics of Marine Origin and Their Therapeutic Application.

The increase in antibiotic-resistant pathogens has prompted the search for alternative therapies. One such alternative is the use of probiotic microorganisms. However, growing interest is now turning toward postbiotics-non-viable microbial cells and/or their components or metabolites-that can confer health benefits without the risks associated with administering live microbes. Marine ecosystems, characterized by extreme and diverse environmental conditions, are a promising yet underexplored source of microorganisms capable of producing unique postbiotic compounds. These include bioactive pepti

Investigation of Microbial Community of Korean Soy Sauce (Ganjang) Using Shotgun Metagenomic Sequencing and Its Relationship with Sensory Characteristics.

The microbial community of a soy sauce is one of the most important factors in determining the sensory characteristics of that soy sauce. In this study, the microbial communities and sensory characteristics of twenty samples of Korean soy sauce (ganjang) were investigated using shotgun metagenome sequencing and descriptive sensory analysis, and their correlations were explored by partial least square (PLS) regression analysis. The metagenome analysis identified 1332 species of bacteria, yeasts, molds, and viruses across 278 genera, of which Tetragenococcus, Bacillus, and Enterococcus accounted

Identification of functional microflora underlying the biodegradation of sulfadiazine-contaminated substrates by Hermetia illucens.

The increasing discharge of antibiotic residues into the natural environment, stemming from both human activities and animal farming, has detrimental effects on natural ecosystems and serves as a significant driving force for the spread of antibiotic resistance. Biodegradation is an important method for the elimination of antibiotics from contaminated substrates, but the identifying in situ microbial populations involved in antibiotic degradation is challenging. Here, DNA stable isotope probing (DNA-SIP) was employed to identify active sulfadiazine (SDZ) degrading microbes in the gut of black

Zearalenone exposure mediated hepatotoxicity via mitochondrial apoptotic and autophagy pathways: Associated with gut microbiome and metabolites.

Zearalenone (ZEN), a mycotoxin is frequently detected in different food products and has been widely studied for its toxicity. However, the underlying mechanisms of hepatotoxic effects, relationship between gut microbiome and liver metabolite mediated hepatotoxicity mechanisms induced by ZEN are still not clear. Here, we reported that the different microscopic changes like swelling of hepatocyte, disorganization of hepatocytes and extensive vacuolar degeneration were observed, and the mitochondrial functions decreased in exposed mice. Results exhibited up-regulation in expression of signals of

[Oxidation of inorganic sulfur compounds by obligatory organotrophic bacteria].

New data obtained by the author and other researchers on two different groups of obligately heterotrophic bacteria capable of inorganic sulfur oxidation are reviewed. Among culturable marine and (halo)alkaliphilic heterotrophs oxidizing sulfur compounds (thiosulfate and, much less actively, elemental sulfur and sulfide) incompletely to tetrathionate, representatives of the gammaproteobacteria, especially from the Halomonas group, dominate. Some of denitrifying species from this group are able to carry out anaerobic oxidation of thiosulfate and sulfide using nitrogen oxides as electron acceptor

Humus-gradient adaptive laboratory evolution remodels electroactive microbial consortia to achieve cold-resistant bioelectrogenesis.

Low-temperature conditions trigger continuous humus accumulation in substrates, inhibiting extracellular electron transfer and reducing electrogenesis efficiency, which limits the practical performance and engineering application of constructed wetland-microbial fuel cells (CW-MFCs). Conventional physicochemical regulation strategies cannot fundamentally improve the intrinsic stress resistance of electroactive microbial consortia. Herein, a two-stage experimental workflow combining adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) domestication and subsequent CW-MFC inoculation was established to obtain mix
