Effect of harvesting the hamstrings tendon for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction on the morphology and movement of the hamstrings muscle: a novel MRI technique.

This study evaluated intramuscular movement of hamstrings muscle after reconstruction of the ACL with a hamstrings tendon graft. The movement of the muscles during knee flexion was measured using a novel MRI technique called the "tagging snapshot" technique, which labels multiple tagging bands within the musculature. Eleven patients who underwent ACL reconstruction using autogenous semitendinosus and gracilis tendons were studied. The difference in the maximum active knee flexion angle between the ACL-reconstructed and the intact knee was calculated as knee flexion lag. Knee flexion strength w

Hamstring Muscle Use in Women During Hip Extension and the Nordic Hamstring Exercise: A Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study.

Background Understanding hamstring muscle activation patterns in resistance training exercises may have implications for the design of strength training and injury prevention programs. Unfortunately, surface electromyography studies have reported conflicting results regarding hamstring muscle activation patterns in women. Objectives To determine the spatial patterns of hamstring muscle activity during the 45° hip extension and Nordic hamstring exercises in women using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Methods This was a cross-sectional study in which 6 recreationally active women w

Botulinum Toxin Type A Injections Impact Hamstring Muscles and Gait Parameters in Children with Flexed Knee Gait.

The aim of this study was to determine if botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) injection into the medial hamstring can improve gait kinematics and muscle-tendon length in spastic cerebral palsy (CP) with a flexed knee gait (FKG). Twenty-nine children with spastic CP (Gross Motor Function Classification System I-III) with FKG were recruited for this prospective study. BoNT-A was injected into the semitendinosus and semimembranosus (SM) muscles under ultrasonography guidance. Assessments included Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM), Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS), Modified Tardieu Scale (MTS), 3-dimen

Hamstring muscle forces prior to and immediately following an acute sprinting-related muscle strain injury.

A thorough understanding of the biomechanics of the hamstrings during sprinting is required to optimise injury rehabilitation and prevention strategies. The main aims of this study were to compare hamstrings load across different modes of locomotion as well as before and after an acute sprinting-related muscle strain injury. Bilateral kinematic and ground reaction force data were captured from a single subject whilst walking, jogging and sprinting prior to and immediately following a significant injury involving the right semitendinosis and biceps femoris long head muscles. Experimental data w

Similar adaptation in shear moduli of the biarticular hamstring muscles after eccentric-only training and static stretching.

Measures related to passive mechanical properties (e.g., shear modulus) of human skeletal muscle have traditionally been believed to chronically decrease with repeated static stretching (SS). Instead, repeated eccentric contraction has recently emerged as a promising alternative for chronically decreasing muscle shear modulus. Here, we tested the hypothesis that repeated eccentric-only training (ECC) induces greater adaptations in muscle shear modulus than SS within a matched intervention period. Eleven healthy young males participated in a 10-wk intervention (3 sessions/wk) involving knee fle

Assessment of fatty infiltration of the hamstring muscles in chronic proximal hamstring ruptures and effect on clinical outcomes after surgical repair: a novel application of the Goutallier classification.

INTRODUCTION: Increased time to surgery has been previously associated with poorer clinical outcomes after surgical treatment of proximal hamstring ruptures, though the etiology remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether degree of muscle atrophy, as assessed using the Goutallier classification system, is associated with worse outcomes following surgical treatment of chronic proximal hamstring ruptures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective case series of patients who underwent repair of proximal hamstring ruptures from 2012 to 2020 with minimum 2-year follow-

Individual Region- and Muscle-specific Hamstring Activity at Different Running Speeds.

INTRODUCTION: Hamstring strain injuries typically occur in the proximal biceps femoris long head (BFlh) at high running speeds. Strain magnitude seems to be the primary determinant of strain injury, and may be regulated by muscle activation. In running, BFlh strain is largest in the proximal region, especially at high speeds. However, region-specific activity has not been examined. This study examined the proximal-distal and intermuscular activity of BFlh and semitendinosus (ST) as a function of increasing running speed. METHODS: Thirteen participants ran at steady speeds of 4.1 (slow), 5.4 (

BET 2: LASER THERAPY IN THE TREATMENT OF ACUTE HAMSTRING MUSCLE INJURIES.

Local laser therapy has been suggested as a promising treatment for acute hamstring muscle tears. We carried out a shortcut systematic review to establish whether therapeutic lasers are beneficial for patients with acute hamstring tears. Despite a comprehensive literature search, no studies that were directly relevant to the question could be identified. The clinical bottom line is therefore that there is currently no evidence for the use of any form of laser therapy in the treatment of acute hamstring muscle tears.

Partial rupture of the hamstring muscle complex: a literature review on treatment options.

Injuries of the hamstring muscle complex (HMC) often affect athletes participating in specific sporting activities. Mild injuries that constitute a mere strain of the muscle can be managed symptomatically, while severe injuries often require surgical intervention to precipitate a return to function. Neglected injuries usually result in a long-term functional impairment. Therefore, surgical reconstruction of the HMC is advised for both partial and complete lesions. Without acute repair, a chronic lesion referred to as hamstring syndrome can result due to dysfunction of the HMC. Surgical interve

[Active muscle extension testing of the hamstrings: reference values and impacting factors].

INTRODUCTION: Less muscle elasticity of the hamstrings increases the risk of muscle strain. Muscle balance is the purpose of muscle stretching. The active knee-extension test (AKE) represents an established test of muscle elasticity. For evaluating the test results standard values are necessary. The aim of this study is to measure standard values of the AKE test in a collective of healthy male and female fitness athletes and to determine factors of muscle elasticity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed the AKE test in 119 healthy fitness athletes (56 women, 63 men) evaluated biometric and anth

Breaking points of human hamstring muscle-tendon complex: A cadaveric study.

Hamstring strain injuries frequently occur during the late swing phase of running; however, the breaking strength of the human hamstring muscle-tendon complexes remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the breaking strength of human hamstring muscle-tendon complexes. To this end, seven cadaveric specimens preserved using the Thiel's method were examined. The biceps femoris long head (BFlh), semimembranosus (SM), and semitendinosus (ST) muscles were isolated and secured to a testing apparatus. Using a material testing machine, tensile load (P) was applied to the distal end of each muscle.

Multiscale hamstring muscle adaptations following 9 weeks of eccentric training.

BACKGROUND: Eccentric training, such as Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) training, is commonly used as a preventive measure for hamstring strains. Eccentric training is believed to induce lengthening of muscle fascicles and to be associated with the addition of sarcomeres in series within muscle fibers. However, the difficulty in measuring sarcomere adaptation in human muscles has severely limited information about the precise mechanisms of adaptation. This study addressed this limitation by measuring the multiscale hamstring muscle adaptations in response to 9 weeks of NHE training and 3 weeks

Knee flexor muscle fatigue during repeated Nordic hamstring exercise.

BACKGROUND: Nordic hamstring exercise is an effective method for preventing hamstring strain injury. In this study, we investigated the response of knee flexors regarding increased muscle force and fatigue when the Nordic hamstring exercise was performed repeatedly to further understand how it can prevent hamstring strain injury. METHODS: The Nordic hamstring exercise was performed 10 times by 53 athletes; knee flexor peak tensile force and the respective flexion angle were compared at different phases during this sequence: phase 1, 1st Nordic hamstring exercise force; phase 2, mean value dur

The effect of Nordic hamstring strength training on muscle architecture, stiffness, and strength.

PURPOSE: Hamstring strain injury is a frequent and serious injury in competitive and recreational sports. While Nordic hamstring (NH) eccentric strength training is an effective hamstring injury-prevention method, the protective mechanism of this exercise is not understood. Strength training increases muscle strength, but also alters muscle architecture and stiffness; all three factors may be associated with reducing muscle injuries. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of NH eccentric strength training on hamstring muscle architecture, stiffness, and strength. METHODS: Twenty

Effects of forward trunk lean on hamstring muscle kinematics during sprinting.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of forward trunk lean on hamstring muscle kinematics during sprinting. Eight male sprinters performed maximal-effort sprints in two trunk positions: forward lean and upright. A three-dimensional musculoskeletal model was used to compute the musculotendon lengths and velocity of the biceps femoris long head, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus muscles during the sprinting gait cycle. The musculotendon lengths of all the three hamstring muscles at foot strike and toe-off were significantly greater during the forward trunk lean sprint than during the up

Eccentric Strength Assessment of Hamstring Muscles with New Technologies: a Systematic Review of Current Methods and Clinical Implications.

BACKGROUND: Given the severe economic and performance implications of hamstring injuries, there are different attempts to identify their risk factors for subsequently developing injury prevention strategies to reduce the risk of these injuries. One of the strategies reported in the scientific literature is the application of interventions with eccentric exercises. To verify the effectiveness of these interventions, different eccentric strength measurements have been used with low-cost devices as alternatives to the widespread used isokinetic dynamometers and the technically limited handheld dy
