Candida auris is a rapidly emerging pathogen and is able to cause severe infections with high mortality rates. It is frequently misidentified in most clinical laboratories, thus requiring more specialized identification techniques. Furthermore, several clinical isolates have been found to be multidrug resistant and there is evidence of nosocomial transmission in outbreak fashion. Appropriate infection control measures will play a major role in controlling the management and spread of this pathogen. Unfortunately, there are very few data available on the effectiveness of disinfectants against C

BACKGROUND: Recent studies put under scrutiny the prevailing hand hygiene guidelines, which incorporate quantitative parameters regarding handrub volume and hand size. Understanding the criticality of complete (i.e., efficient) hand hygiene in healthcare, objectivization of hand hygiene related parameters are paramount, including the formulation of the ABHR. Complete coverage can be achieved with optimal Alcohol-Based Hand Rub (ABHR) provided. The literature is limited regarding ABHR formulation variances to antimicrobial efficiency and healthcare workers' preference, while public data on clin

Hand hygiene is of utmost importance as it may be contaminated easily from direct contact with airborne microorganism droplets from coughs and sneezes. Particularly in situations like pandemic outbreak, it is crucial to interrupt the transmission chain of the virus by the practice of proper hand sanitization. It can be achieved with contact isolation and strict infection control tool like maintaining good hand hygiene in hospital settings and in public. The success of the hand sanitization solely depends on the use of effective hand disinfecting agents formulated in various types and forms suc

BACKGROUND: We assessed changes associated with the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2) pandemic on hand disinfection compliance and technique among inpatients and visitors in a German tertiary-care hospital.
METHODS: Hand disinfection compliance and technique were directly observed. Approximately 10% of observed individuals were included in a questionnaire-based study on motivations and knowledge (voluntary participation). A pre-pandemic period of 5 months was compared with a pandemic period of 10 months during the early phase of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in 2020.
RESULTS: A t

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) caused by multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) represent a global threat to human health and well-being. Because transmission of MDROs to patients often occurs via transiently contaminated hands of healthcare personnel (HCP), hand hygiene is considered the most important measure for preventing HAIs. Environmental surfaces contaminated with MDROs from colonized or infected patients represent an important source of HCP hand contamination and contribute to transmission of pathogens. Accordingly, facilities are encouraged to adopt and implement recommendati

Poliovirus 1 (PV 1) is the standard virus used in tests to support claims of virucidal property in commercial hand sanitizers and disinfectants in China. Classified within the same genus as poliovirus, enterovirus A71 (EV A71), which causes hand-foot-mouth disease among children, has caused numerous outbreaks in China and other countries. Hand hygiene and surface cleaning are critical to prevent and control this disease and many other infectious diseases. This study compared the efficacies of 17 self-made alcohol-based hand sanitizers and 10 commercially available disinfectants (4 high-level,

BACKGROUND: Dermatitis caused by occupational contact allergy to rubber additives such as diphenylguanidine (DPG) in medical gloves is a hazard for healthcare workers. Both the duration of exposure to medical gloves and the number of gloves used per day vary. The use of alcoholic skin disinfectants before glove donning is mandatory.
OBJECTIVES: To assess whether skin exposure to the rubber accelerator DPG released from glove material is influenced by alcoholic hand disinfectants, time, and pH.
METHODS: With the use of ethanol washes, the amount of DPG left on the hands after wearing of glove

To prevent skin problems we have recommended in Finland that hospital personnel should avoid soap or other detergents for handwashing and instead use alcoholic preparations containing emollients such as 2% glycerol. Alcohol with emollient disinfection is used frequently in hospitals and it causes fewer complaints of skin dryness than washing with soap. However, there are still members of staff who have hand skin problems. Our studies conducted during winter have shown that when these persons used emulsion for hand cleansing, instead of washing with soap, skin deterioration was much less, allow

In the area of hand hygiene, European Norms exist, or are under development, with regard to protective gloves and for assessing the antimicrobial efficacy of hand disinfectants. Important norms for gloves are EN 420 (General requirements), EN 374 (Protective gloves against chemicals and microorganisms) and EN 455 (Medical gloves for single use). A suspension test for the demonstration of bactericidal activity (prEN 12054) is obligatory for hand disinfectants in all fields of application; a test to prove activity against yeasts applies only to hygienic hand rub. (Optional) Claims for virucidal

BACKGROUND: Research on self-interested and prosocial appeals during COVID-19 has largely relied on online messages and self-reported intentions, leaving limited evidence on their effectiveness in offline health communication. This gap is important, as many preventive behaviors-such as hand hygiene- occur in stimuli-rich, offline environments.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the relative effectiveness of prosocial, self-interested, and combined motivational appeals in promoting hand hygiene in an offline retail setting.
METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial in four Swiss supermarkets dur

Two methods for artificial contamination of hands and two sampling techniques to recover the test organisms were compared for their effects on the results of two post-contamination hand treatments: a handrub with two portions of 3 ml of 2-propanol 60% v/v for 1 min, and a handwash with liquid soap 20% w/v for 1 min followed by a 15 s rinse. The two contamination methods involved a short immersion of the hands (up to the middle of the mid-hand) in a suspension of the test organism followed by either air-drying (3 min) or drying by rubbing the hands' vigorously against each other (3 min) in a st

BACKGROUND: Adenoviruses belong to the stable nonenveloped viruses playing an important role in healthcare-associated infections mainly causing respiratory infections and epidemic keratoconjunctivitis. Hand disinfection with alcoholic preparations is therefore one of the most important measures to prevent such viral infections in hospitals and other medical settings.
METHODS: The inactivation of adenovirus type 5 by ethanol, 1- and 2-propanol, and 2 commercially available hand disinfectants was examined at different concentrations, temperatures, and pH-values.
RESULTS: For ethanol and 1-prop

The most important risk factor for occupational contact dermatitis in hospital personnel is the exposure to irritants such as water, detergents and alcohol-based solutions. This study was undertaken to evaluate the short-term effects of repeated exposure to an alcohol-based disinfectant, to a detergent and to an alcohol-based disinfectant/detergent alternately. The hardening effect in preirritated skin after a 4-week interval was also evaluated. Detergent, disinfectant and disinfectant/detergent alternately were applied daily every 15 min for 6 h for 2 days to the flexor upper arms and forearm

BACKGROUND: Healthcare associated infections (HAIs) represent a serious problem for public health, as they increase the morbidity and mortality rates, present a relevant financial burden, and significantly contribute to the antimicrobial resistance.
METHODS: The aim of this review was to investigate the literature about HAIs, with particular reference to hospital environments and the role of cleaning and disinfection procedures. Hospital environments are an essential reservoir for HAIs cross transmission, and the application of appropriate procedures related to hand hygiene and disinfection/s
