Hand and wrist injuries in children.

Hand and wrist injuries in children have steadily increased over the past decade as athletic participation by both boys and girls at an earlier age has been encouraged by parents and coaches. This article will cover the spectrum of hand and wrist injuries in children including ligamentous, tendinous, and bony injuries, as well as the increasing incidence of stress-related injuries in the upper extremities.

Hand injuries--special considerations in children.

Injuries to the hand are very common in children. Because of children's tremendous capability of repair, fingertip injuries can usually be treated with dressings, and complicated closures with flaps or grafts can be avoided. Fractures are common, and the treating physician must be aware of the various ephiphyseal injuries that can occur in the hand. Because children are so active, if the hand must be immobilized, a long arm cast or valpeau dressing will usually be required.

Common hand injuries in the athlete.

Common injuries to the hand and wrist of athletes have been discussed under the headings of ligament injuries, fractures, tendon injuries, and neurovascular injuries. Although the frequency and mechanisms of certain injuries may be different in the athlete than in the nonathlete, the principles of proper early diagnosis and adequate treatment are the same whether the patient is an athlete or not.

Common injuries of the athlete's hand.

Hand injuries are among the most frequent accidents seen in sports medicine. All too commonly they are considered trivial since the athlete may continue to participate actively and neglect his injury. The consequent delay in diagnosis and proper treatment may result in long-standing or even permanent disability. This paper describes the more commonly encountered hand injuries, their diagnosis and their optimal treatment. Included are soft-tissue injuries, ligamentous injuries, fractures and tendon avulsions. The basic principles applicable to skeletal and soft-tissue trauma of the hand, which

Hand and Wrist Injuries Related to Motocross Injuries: 5 Year Series.

BACKGROUND: The increasingly fashionable sport of motocross is practiced worldwide by millions of people, but there is very little in the literature regarding its associated injuries and their prevention. We therefore present the first comprehensive, prospective study looking at hand and wrist injuries resulting from motocross injuries in the UK. METHODS: Data was prospectively collected over a 5-year period (from 2010 to 2015) at our regional trauma unit. We exclusively looked at motocross riders. Injuries sustained via motorcycle were excluded from our study. RESULTS: During the period stu

Injuries to the hand and wrist. A study of 50,272 injuries.

This study reports the causes, characteristics and treatment of injuries to the hand and wrist presented to five accident and emergency departments in a 2-year survey of 13% of the Danish population. The rate of injury to the hand or wrist was 28.6% of all injuries, or 3.7 per 100,000 inhabitants per year. 34% of the accidents were domestic, 35% were leisure accidents, 26% were occupational and 5% were traffic accidents. Only 2% of the patients were admitted to hospital for further treatment or observation and 13% were referred to a hospital as outpatients. The most frequent causes for admissi

Acute Bony Injuries of Hand and Wrist.

Acute bony injuries to the hand and wrist are very common after a fall on an outstretched hand. In the wrist, distal radius fractures are the most common; isolated distal ulna fractures are uncommon. More serious injuries to the wrist include complicated fracture-dislocation injuries such as perilunate dislocations. At the carpal level, scaphoid fractures are the most common followed by fractures of the dorsal side of the triquetrum. The metacarpals often fracture, most commonly the base of the thumb and the subcapital region of the fifth metacarpal. In the fingers, we encounter many different

[Treatment of acute injuries of the hand].

Treatment of acute injuries of the hand Abstract. Injuries to the hand are a common presentation in primary care units. When accurately assessed, many open injuries may be handled in the emergency department without referral to a hand surgery specialist. We would like to give some recommendations on how to treat the most frequent injuries like lesions to the nail and nailbed, fingertip amputation as well as burns, infections and bites. But first, we highlight the different methods of local anesthesia and discuss the use of a tourniquet or vasoconstriction with adrenalin - WALANT - instead.

Avulsion Injuries of the Hand and Wrist.

Injuries of the hand and wrist are frequently encountered in radiology. Avulsions of the hand and wrist are a heterogeneous group of injuries, but they often have a characteristic imaging appearance that relates to the intricate bone and soft-tissue anatomy and the mechanism of injury. The imaging appearance and this intricate form and function dictate treatment of hand and wrist avulsions. This article reviews frequently and infrequently encountered avulsion injuries and describes abnormalities that may mimic the imaging appearance of avulsions. Specifically discussed entities include the Ben

High-pressure injection injuries to the hand.

The authors retrospectively reviewed their experience with bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) to treat respiratory insufficiency in pediatric patients over a 5-year period. After excluding patients on chronic home BiPAP and those in whom BiPAP was used to facilitate tracheal extubation (because there were no pre-BiPAP values on which to judge its efficacy), the study cohort included 45 patients (1.5 to 22 years) in whom BiPAP was used for acute respiratory insufficiency. The primary indication for BiPAP was a primary pulmonary parenchymal process in 29 patients and postoperative atelecta

Fish vaccine injection injuries of the hand.

High pressure injection of oil-based substances can cause devastating injuries of the hand and the necessity for urgent surgical debridement has been well established. We present three cases of injection injury caused by vaccines used in the fish farming industry. Patients presented with pain, swelling and lymphangitis. The marked vascular changes often associated with such injuries were absent. All patients were treated with intravenous antibiotics combined with early surgical debridement and irrigation. We report full recovery in all three patients.

Imaging of athletic wrist and hand injuries.

Sports-related injuries of the wrist and hand are commonly encountered in clinical practice. Athletic injuries create special challenges for the orthopedic surgeon and radiologist, as these patients expect to recover quickly and return to the same athletic endeavors that caused their original injuries. A thorough understanding of the mechanism of injury and imaging findings are necessary for accurate diagnosis and effective therapy. This knowledge allows the clinician to effectively educate the athlete concerning the risks, complications, and prognosis of the injury and its treatment. This art

Injuries to the hand from dog bites.

A review of dog bite injuries referred to one surgeon over a 12 month period demonstrated a significant association between a delay in referral and a prolonged period of subsequent in-patient treatment. Two patients sustained injuries when delivering material through a letter-box.

Hand and wrist injuries in young athletes.

Successful treatments of musculoskeletal injuries in the pediatric population demand a thorough understanding of the basic anatomy and its biomechanics, and the physiology of growth and development of the immature skeleton. In addition, good treatment outcomes rely on the treating physician being an effective teacher to the young athlete and the patient's parents, coaches, and trainers. At the same time, the physician must be a good student in learning the nature of the patient's sports and each patient's athletic ability and aspirations. Most pediatric hand and wrist injuries can be treated n

Wrist and hand injuries in platform diving.

To permit a smooth entry into the water, platform divers assume a special position with their hands. An older method consists of hitting the water with both fists closed while holding one thumb in the palm of the other hand. In a newer technique fingers and wrists are hyperextended, the forearms pronated, and the hands overlapped. In this series of 21 divers, the injuries included 2 fractures and 5 sprains treated by conservative methods. Two divers required surgery: one with loose bodies in the radiocarpal articulation, the other with chronic rupture of the trapeziometacarpal ligament and syn
