High-strength, low-hysteresis PVA conductive hydrogel enabled by osmotic regulation for robotic hand sensors.

Conventional conductive hydrogels, despite their excellent electrical conductivity, generally suffer from poor mechanical strength, which significantly limits their applications in high-load dynamic environments. To address this challenge, this study innovatively proposes a bidirectional infiltration regulation mechanism, successfully developing a polyvinyl alcohol-based ionic conductive hydrogel (PVA-L) that combines high strength with low hysteresis characteristics. Using PVA as the matrix, a microcrystalline cross-linked network was constructed via DMSO-assisted freeze-thaw cycling. Short-t

Association between Preoperative Hand Grip Strength and Postoperative Delirium after Cardiovascular Surgery: A Retrospective Study.

The association of frailty with postoperative delirium has not been fully investigated in patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether preoperative hand grip strength is associated with postoperative delirium. This retrospective study included patients aged >65 years who had undergone elective cardiovascular surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass at a Japanese university hospital between April 2020 and February 2022. We defined low hand grip strength as hand grip values of <275 n and <177 n for men and women, respectively. Postoperative delirium

Assessment of Nutritional Status in Children With Chronic Kidney Disease Using Hand Grip Strength Tool.

OBJECTIVE: Muscle status assessment is crucial for diagnosis of protein energy wasting PEW/cachexia in chronic kidney disease (CKD) population. Hand grip strength (HGS) has been used in muscle power assessment in adult CKD. However, no data is available about its usefulness in children with CKD. Hence, we aimed to study the reliability of HGS in reflecting the muscle power and thus, nutritional status in children with CKD. DESIGN AND METHODS: In this Observational cross sectional study we enrolled 73 CKD children; 45 had end stage kidney disease (ESKD) on hemodialysis (HD) and 28 had CKD but

Hand grip strength as a proposed new vital sign of health: a narrative review of evidences.

Hand grip strength (HGS) serves as a fundamental metric in assessing muscle function and overall physical capability and is particularly relevant to the ageing population. HGS holds an important connection to the concept of sarcopenia, which encompasses the age-related decline in muscle mass, strength, and function. It has also been reported to indicate the health of an individual. We reviewed the interplay between HGS and various health parameters, including morbidity and mortality, by carrying out a literature search on PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar between 10 and 30 August 2023, to iden

Effects of eccentric training on hand strength in subjects with lateral epicondylalgia: a randomized-controlled trial.

The main aim of this study was to evaluate the short-term effects of daily eccentric exercises on functional pain-free hand strength in subjects with long-term lateral epicondylalgia. Forty-two subjects with lateral epicondylalgia were randomly assigned either to a 6-week home exercise regimen receiving eccentric training for their wrist extensors and a forearm band or to a control group receiving a forearm band only. The main outcomes were pain-free hand-grip and wrist-extensor strength at mid- and end-intervention follow-ups, 3 and 6 weeks after inclusion, respectively. Secondary outcomes we

Shoulder strength of females while sitting and standing as a function of hand location and force direction.

This study evaluated single-handed isometric push strength capabilities of females working at or above-shoulder level. We examined the influence of force exertion direction (vertical, horizontal and lateral), angle of shoulder flexion from horizontal (0 degrees, 30 degrees, 60 degrees and 90 degrees) and gross body posture (standing and sitting), on maximal volitional shoulder strength. Force exertion direction had the greatest affect on shoulder strength (p<0.0001). Strength was greatest in the vertical axis pushing downwards and weakest in the horizontal plane pushing forwards. Angle influen

Recovery of strength after reduced pediatric fractures of the forearm, wrist or hand; A prospective study.

INTRODUCTION: The way strength recovers after reduction of pediatric fractures of the upper extremity has not previously been the specific scope of research. This is remarkable, since strength measurements are often used as an outcome measure in studies on trauma of the upper extremity. The aim of this study was to evaluate how strength recovers after sustainment of fractures of the forearm, wrist or hand treated by closed or open reduction in children and adolescents in the first 6 months after trauma. How much strength is lost at 6 weeks, 3 months and 6 months after trauma, and is this loss

The value of hand grip strength (HGS) as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker in congenital heart disease.

BACKGROUND: In patients with congenital heart disease (CHD), there is little data on the diagnostic and prognostic relevance of hand grip strength (HGS) for clinical assignment, while in the general population the loss of muscle strength and mass is an important risk factor in cardiovascular disease which is conversely associated with morbidity and all-cause mortality. This study aimed to assess the degree of muscle dysfunction using HGS as a biomarker in a large group of patients with CHD who often develop muscle dysfunction. METHODS: In total, 385 patients (27.6±13.1 years, 43% female) were

The impact of hand dominance and ulnar and median nerve impairment on strength and basic daily activities.

The authors sought to determine the impact of hand dominance and its relation to function among ulnar alone and combined ulnar and median nerve lesions in leprosy patients. The study sample consisted of 62 persons affected with leprosy (mean age 36.1 years) who were either suffering from ulnar nerve lesions alone (34 patients) or combined ulnar and median lesions (28 patients). The data from the earlier work of this institution with normal hands in the adjacent rural uninvolved population were taken as controls. Grip, pulp-to-pulp, lateral, and three-jaw-chuck pinch strengths were measured usi
