Hand-transmitted vibration and biodynamic response of the human hand-arm: a critical review.

Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) has been associated with prolonged exposure to vibration transmitted to the human hand-arm system from hand-held power tools, vibrating machines, or hand-held vibrating workpieces. The biodynamic response of the human hand and arm to hand transmitted vibration (HTV) forms an essential basis for effective evaluations of exposures, vibration-attenuation mechanisms, and potential injury mechanisms. The biodynamic response to HTV and its relationship to HAVS are critically reviewed and discussed to highlight the advances and the need for further research. In view

Nerve conduction in relation to vibration exposure - a non-positive cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral neuropathy is one of the principal clinical disorders in workers with hand-arm vibration syndrome. Electrophysiological studies aimed at defining the nature of the injury have provided conflicting results. One reason for this lack of consistency might be the sparsity of published longitudinal etiological studies with both good assessment of exposure and a well-defined measure of disease. Against this background we measured conduction velocities in the hand after having assessed vibration exposure over 21 years in a cohort of manual workers. METHODS: The study group cons

Hand-arm vibration in orthopaedic surgery: a neglected risk.

BACKGROUND: Hand-arm vibration syndrome is an occupational disease caused by exposure to hand-arm transmitted vibration. The Health and Safety Executive has set limits for vibration exposure, including an exposure action value (EAV), where steps should be taken to reduce exposure, and an exposure limit value (ELV), beyond which vibrating equipment must not be used for the rest of the working day. AIMS: To measure hand-arm transmitted vibration among orthopaedic surgeons, who routinely use hand-operated saws. METHODS: We undertook a cadaveric study measuring vibration associated with a tibial

Vibration perception thresholds in workers exposed to vibration.

The vibration perception thresholds (VPT) at six frequencies from 16 to 500 Hz were examined in 77 workers exposed to hand-arm vibration and in 77 controls using a limits procedure. A dose-response relationship between VPTs and exposure to vibration was found, and the age-adjusted VPTs at each frequency were higher in workers exposed to vibration than in controls. Carpal tunnel syndrome (at 250 Hz) and consumption of alcohol (at 125 Hz) significantly increased the VPT, but vibration-induced white finger was not correlated with VPT. Indices for low (16 and 32 Hz) and high (63-500 Hz) VPT freque

Exposure-response relation for vibration-induced white finger: influence of different estimates of daily exposure time.

PURPOSE: It is analyzed whether differences in how the daily usage time is determined in a population exposed to hand-transmitted vibration are the cause of discrepancies between exposure-response models constructed for vibration-induced white finger (VWF). The predictions of the models are then used to evaluate the one in ISO 5349-1:2001. METHODS: Pooled analyses employing data from epidemiologic studies of vibration-exposed occupations deemed the most reliable, together with published ratios between daily tool or machine usage times determined by questionnaire or interview and measured valu

Health effects associated with occupational exposure to hand-arm or whole body vibration.

Workers in a number of different occupational sectors are exposed to workplace vibration on a daily basis. This exposure may arise through the use of powered-hand tools or hand-transmitted vibration (HTV). Workers might also be exposed to whole body vibration (WBV) by driving delivery vehicles, earth moving equipment, or through use of tools that generate vibration at low dominant frequencies and high amplitudes, such as jackhammers. Occupational exposure to vibration has been associated with an increased risk of musculoskeletal pain in the back, neck, hands, shoulders, and hips. Occupational

Measurement, evaluation, and assessment of peripheral neurological disorders caused by hand-transmitted vibration.

Regular exposure to hand-transmitted vibration can result in symptoms and signs of peripheral vascular, neurological and other disorders collectively known as the hand-arm vibration syndrome. The measurement of the effects of hand-transmitted vibration involves converting the evidence of disorder (symptoms and signs) into information that can be stored. Evaluation requires the use of scales on which to indicate the severity of the various symptoms and signs. Assessment involves a judgement of severity relative to a criterion, usually for a specific purpose (e.g. to decide on removal from work

Quantitative exposure assessment for shipyard workers exposed to hand-transmitted vibration from a variety of vibration tools.

The quantitative exposure to vibration for shipyard workers who have used several kinds of vibratory tools was studied. The dose-response relationship between lifetime exposure dose and hand-arm vibration syndrome also was studied. The study included 344 workers who were exposed to vibration in one shipyard and 53 unexposed workers in the same company. Vibration measurements were made on several vibratory tools according to the international standard, ISO 5349. The actual exposure times for the vibratory tools were measured. Questionnaires for demographics, exposure to vibration, and confoundi

[Neck and upper limb disorders caused by combined exposures to ergonomic risk factors and hand-transmitted vibration].

A review of neck and upper limb disorders caused by combined exposures to hand-transmitted vibration and ergonomic risk factors (repetitiveness, force, posture) suggested the following conclusions: (1) hand-transmitted vibration has a dominant role in the etiopathogenesis of Raynaud's phenomenon and various forms of peripheral neuropathy with sensory impairment (digital, multifocal) in users of vibrating tools; (2) vibration of low frequency and high amplitude from percussive tools concur, together with adverse ergonomic factors, to produce degenerative changes in the bones and joints of the u

The relation of musculoskeletal disorders to ergonomic work demands in welders and electrical workers: a prospective Canadian cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal disorders are known to result from physical demands at the workplace. Identification of risks specific to particular trades may encourage work modification to prevent new onset conditions. METHODS: In a Canadian cohort study of male and female welders and electrical workers, we collected self-reports of low-back pain, shoulder pain, and symptoms suggestive of vibration white finger (VWF) at each 6-monthly contact for up to 5 yr. Physician records of back and shoulder/joint disorders and Raynaud's syndrome were extracted from the Alberta administrative health data

Affected segments of the median nerve detected by fractionated nerve conduction measurement in vibration-induced neuropathy.

Peripheral neuropathy in the hand has often been reported in workers using hand-held vibrating tools. But the affected location in the hand is not clearly demonstrated. To elucidate the impaired segment of the median nerve within the hand, fractionated median sensory nerve conduction velocity (SCV) was measured in the digital, finger-to-palm, palm-to-wrist and wrist-to-elbow segments. Subjects were 56 patients with hand-arm vibration syndrome and 43 healthy controls of similar age. SCV in the digital and the wrist-to-palm segments was significantly slower in the patients than the controls. Slo

The effects of vibration-reducing gloves on finger vibration.

UNLABELLED: Vibration-reducing (VR) gloves have been used to reduce the hand-transmitted vibration exposures from machines and powered hand tools but their effectiveness remains unclear, especially for finger protection. The objectives of this study are to determine whether VR gloves can attenuate the vibration transmitted to the fingers and to enhance the understanding of the mechanisms of how these gloves work. Seven adult male subjects participated in the experiment. The fixed factors evaluated include hand force (four levels), glove condition (gel-filled, air bladder, no gloves), and locat

[Hand bones disorders in vibrational disease caused by local vibration should be considered as pathogenetic characteristic of the disease].

Opposite to the authors of the publication, that dystrophic changes in locomotory apparatus of hands and shoulders girdle could not be considered as vibration disease signs, the article authors believe that hand bone changes--tuberosity of distal finger bones, cystic transparency, local osteoporosis--could be pathogenetic signs of vibration disease, along with vascular and neurologic signs. The authors agree that periarthrosis, miofibrosis, if characterized properly through sanitary and hygienic regulations in new List of Occupational diseases, that will be put into practical medicine in the n

Diagnostics of hand-arm system disorders in workers who use vibrating tools.

A hand-arm vibration syndrome occurs in some workers who use hand held vibrating tools. It is recognised to consist of white fingers, diffusely distributed finger neuropathy, pain in the arm and hand, and a small excess risk of osteoarthrosis from percussion to the wrist and elbow. Carpal tunnel syndrome is mainly due to ergonomic factors other than vibration, but certain factors related to vibration may contribute to its development. A decrease in muscle power induced by vibration, and excessive hearing deficit have been postulated. The assessment of a disorder suspected of being induced by v

Vibration-induced disruption of retrograde axoplasmic transport in peripheral nerve.

Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) results from excessive exposure to hand-transmitted vibration. Whether the peripheral nerve damage characteristic of HAVS is a direct result of vibration or is secondary to vascular insufficiency remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of vibration exposure on axoplasmic transport in peripheral nerves and soleus motor neurons. Sciatic nerves and motor neurons from rats following two 5-h periods of vibration exposure demonstrated disruption in retrograde transport compared to normal. After 10 days of vibration (5 h/day), axoplasmic
