Chemical Diversity and Biological Properties of Secondary Metabolites from Sea Hares of Aplysia Genus.

The marine environment is an important source of structurally-diverse and biologically-active secondary metabolites. During the last two decades, thousands of compounds were discovered in marine organisms, several of them having inspired the development of new classes of therapeutic agents. Marine mollusks constitute a successful phyla in the discovery of new marine natural products (MNPs). Over a 50-year period from 1963, 116 genera of mollusks contributed innumerous compounds, Aplysia being the most studied genus by MNP chemists. This genus includes 36 valid species and should be distinguish

Epidemiology and prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in the Iberian hare (Lepus granatensis).

Hares are important game species in Europe and their meat is consumed by humans. Toxoplasmosis is an important cause of mortality in hares in Nordic countries but little is known of Toxoplasma gondii infection in the Iberian hare (Lepus granatensis). Sera from 298 Iberian hares from Navarra (North Spain) were assayed for antibodies against T. gondii by the modified agglutination test. The samples were collected at necropsy during three consecutive years (2009-2011). Titers of 1:25 and higher were found in 34 hares (11.4%; CI95%: 7.8-14.9). Significant differences in seroprevalence were observe

Effects of sublethal exposure of European brown hares to paraoxon on the course of tularemia.

OBJECTIVES: The causative agent of tularemia Francisella tularensis is highly infectious and lagomorphs are important reservoirs and a source of human disease. The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that sublethal exposure to pesticides increases the susceptibility of hares to F. tularensis and modulates the course of the infection. METHODS: Experimental hares were allocated to a) control, b) paraoxon-treated, c) F. tularensis-treated, and d) paraoxon-and-F. tularensis-treated groups of five specimens on a random basis and subcutaneously inoculated with a wild F. tularensis s

Optimal strategies and complexity: a theoretical analysis of the anti-predatory behavior of the hare.

Predator-prey relationships involving rabbits and hares are widely studied at a long-term population level, while the short-term ethological interactions between one predator and one prey are less well documented. We use a physiologically-based model of hare behavior, developed in the framework of artificial intelligence studies, to analyse its sophisticated anti-predatory behavior. The hares use to stand to the fox in order to inform it that its potential prey is alerted. The behavior of the hare is characterized by specific standing and flushing distances. We show that both hare survival pro

Edward Selleck Hare (1812-1838) and the Syndrome of Paralysis of the Cervical Sympathetic.

Edward Selleck Hare (1812-1838), the first to describe a case of cervical tumour in association with ocular symptoms (Horner's syndrome), died at the age of 26-the day before his paper was published-from typhus contracted in his wards at the Staffordshire General Infirmary. The details of his short career are described and his paper is reproduced in facsimile. He has no claim to priority over Horner, since he was not aware that the ocular symptoms in the case which he described were due to paralysis of the sympathetic.

Characterization of the Tongue Worm, Linguatula serrata (Pentastomida), Identified from Hares (Lepus europaeus) in Romania.

Linguatula serrata (Frölich, 1789) is a widespread parasite known as the tongue worm belonging to the family Linguatulidae. The adult form of the parasite is usually located in the upper respiratory tract of domestic and wild carnivores while the larval forms are located in the visceral organs of intermediate hosts (various herbivorous mammals). Twenty-four European brown hares (Lepus europaeus) were examined in this study, of which two were positive with L. serrata nymphs. The collected nymphs were examined morphologically using electron-microscopic analysis and molecularly by amplification o

Transmission of louping ill virus between infected and uninfected ticks co-feeding on mountain hares.

Most of the data on oral infection of ticks by louping ill virus have been obtained from experiments in which animals were infected by syringe inoculation with infectious material. Using infected ticks to mimic the natural situation, we have demonstrated that louping ill (LI) virus transmission can occur from infected to uninfected Ixodes ricinus feeding in close proximity on mountain hares (Lepus timidus). Under these conditions the hares developed either low or undetectable viraemias. Highest prevalence of LI virus infection was observed in recipient nymphs which had fed to repletion between

Endoparasites of the European Hare (Lepus Europaeus) (Pallas, 1778) in Central Italy.

Brown hare (Lepus europaeus) populations in Europe have declined through decades due to several, but not clear yet, factors. Parasite infections and diseases are some of the causes that directly affected the survival and breeding rates of animal population. A study on the endoparasites of 70 hares (37 hunted free-living hares, and 33 bred on farms hares) was performed between 2015 - 2017 in the province of Grosseto (central Italy), an area where the impact of parasites in the hare population has never been investigated. During necroscopic analysis of hunted hares the following helminthes were

The Seasonal Timing of Snowshoe Hare Virus Transmission on the Island of Newfoundland, Canada.

Arthropod-borne diseases negatively affect humans worldwide. Understanding the biology of the arthropod vectors and the pathogens they harbor, the arthropods are moving targets as a result of climate change, ecosystem degradation, species introductions, and increased human travel. Viruses within the California serogroup of the genus Orthobunyavirus (family Bunyaviridae) are among the mosquito-borne viruses of concern owing to their zoonotic potential. Two of these, snowshoe hare virus (SSHV) and Jamestown Canyon virus, were shown, using a combination of serology and virus isolations, to circul

The hare (Lepus granatensis) as potential sylvatic reservoir of Leishmania infantum in Spain.

Xenodiagnosis of Leishmania infection in hares (Lepus granatensis) from a focus of human leishmaniasis in Fuenlabrada at southwestern Madrid region (Spain) proved that they are infective to Phlebotomus perniciosus. Molecular characterization of isolates obtained from sand flies infected after xenodiagnosis demonstrates that hares were infected by Leishmania infantum. This is the first evidence of the transmission of L. infantum from hares to sand flies. Moreover the results confirm the role that these animals can play as wild reservoirs of leishmaniasis for the recent outbreak of visceral leis

First report of Obeliscoides cuniculi in European brown hare (Lepus europaeus).

Obeliscoides cuniculi is a New World nematode parasite of the Trichostrongilidae family infecting the gastric tract of different domestic and wild Lagomorph species. This parasite is reported for the first time from a European brown hare (Lepus europaeus). The nematodes isolated from the gastro-intestinal tract were identified using the primary characteristics used to differentiate the species of this genus as adults morphology (length and thickness) and other characteristics of spicules, cervical papillae, cuticular ridges and striations. In the Italian study area, the European brown hare liv

Severe tick infestation in a hare and potential risk for transmitting pathogens to humans.

Severe tick infestation was found in a hare in a suburban area of Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, China. We sampled ticks and identified them based on their morphologic characteristics. Three species, Ixodes sinensis, which is commonly found in China and can experimentally transmit Borrelia burgdorferi, Rhipicephalus haemaphysaloides, and Haemaphysalis longicornis which can transmit Lyme disease were detected with an optical microscope and a stereomicroscope. Risk of spreading ticks from suburban to urban areas exists due to human transportation and travel between the infested and non-infested are

The Tibetan hare Lepus oiostolus: a novel intermediate host for Echinococcus multilocularis.

Multicystic hydatids have been found in the livers of hares ( Lepus oiostolus) examined from the Qinghai-Tibet plateau of China. In this study, the causative species was definitively identified as Echinococcus multilocularis by mitochondrial DNA sequencing. This is the first confirmation of larval E. multilocularis from hares. The hydatids contained protoscolices, suggesting that the hare may contribute to the transmission of E. multilocularis on the Tibetan plateau.

Experimental infection of hare (Lepus europaeus) with Coxiella burnetii and Rickettsia slovaca.

Hares (Lepus europaeus L.) infected subcutaneously (s.c.) or per os with Coxiella burnetii and s.c. with Rickettsia slovaca overcame an inapparent infection accompanied by irregular rickettsaemia and distribution of rickettsiae to different organs and variable antibody response. Neither riskettsia could be detected in faeces of infected animals, but C. burnetii was found in the urine of one hare, which died on day 13 post infection (p.i.). Antibodies against C. burnetii persisted for one year of observation period, those against R. slovaca up to the 181st day p.i. Based on the results obtained
