LEXF-ATT-XLM: A hybrid lexicon-enhanced attention model for hate speech detection in low-resource language Roman Urdu.

Hate speech detection in low-resource and informally written languages remains a significant challenge due to the lack of annotated corpora, orthographic variability, and complex code-mixing. Roman Urdu a non-standardized variant of Urdu written in the Latin script exemplifies these linguistic hurdles. In this paper, we propose LEXF-ATT-XLM, a novel hybrid deep learning architecture that synergizes contextual language modeling with explicit domain knowledge. Our model leverages XLM-RoBERTa for deep contextual embeddings, passed through a two-layer Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit (BiGRU) and

Bipolar Mood State Reflected in Functional Connectivity of the Hate Circuit: A Resting-State Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies suggested bipolar disorder caused an aberrant alteration in the insular, putamen, and left superior frontal gyrus, which are the main components of the hate circuit. However, the relationship between the hate circuit and the pathophysiologic substrate underlying different phases of bipolar disorder remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to identify group differences of resting-state functional connectivity within the hate circuit in healthy controls (HCs) and bipolar patients in different mood states. METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging o

On hate crime victimization: Rates, types, and links with suicide risk among sexual orientation minority special interest group members.

Hate crimes remain pressing traumatic events for sexual orientation minority adults. Previous literature documents patterns in which hate crime victimization is associated with elevated risk for poor mental health. The present paper held 2 aims to advance literature. First, we investigated the rates and types of hate crime victimization among sexual orientation minority adults. Second, adopting a mental health amplification risk model, we evaluated whether symptoms of depression, impulsivity, or post-traumatic stress exacerbated the hate crime victimization-suicide risk link. Participants were

When a luxury brand bursts: Modelling the social media viral effects of negative stereotypes adoption leading to brand hate.

In early 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) developed the term "infodemic" to describe the velocity at which data can be exchanged among people, in a free virtual space where firms have limited control over the information diffusion. In particular, the diffusion of information on social media has analogies with the transmission (contagion) of social phenomena and infectious diseases. The aim of this research is to model the viral effects of a luxury marketing campaign when adopting negative stereotypes to increase the market share in a growing market. The campaign generated 506,127 like

Experiences and factors associated with transphobic hate crimes among transgender women in the San Francisco Bay Area: comparisons across race.

BACKGROUND: Trans women experience high rates of gender-based violence (GBV)-a risk factor for adverse health outcomes. Transphobic hate crimes are one such form of GBV that affect trans women. However, little is understood about factors that shape transphobic hate crimes and racial/ethnic variation in these experiences. To contextualize GBV risk and police reporting, we examined self-reported types and correlates of transphobic hate crimes by racial/ethnic group of trans women in the San Francisco Bay Area. METHODS: From 2016 to 2018, trans women participated in a longitudinal cohort study o

Beyond the Binary: The Issue of Intra-Minority Hostility and the Need to Challenge Conventional Victim/Perpetrator Frameworks Within Hate Studies.

It is well-established within the hate studies literature that the majority of hate crimes and incidents of targeted hostility are perpetrated by those in the "majority" society. In the UK, academic and official research consistently shows that young White, British males are most commonly the culprits of all forms of targeted victimization, especially racist hate. However, urban areas of "super-diversity" offer researchers an opportunity to understand hate crime victimization and perpetration in a more nuanced and comprehensive way. Hate studies research has slowly begun to highlight instances

Experiences of recent hate-related violence and their association with mental and physical health among people living with HIV in Atlanta, Georgia.

BACKGROUND: People with HIV (PWH) are disproportionately affected by violence. The majority of violence research has focused on intimate partner violence, childhood abuse, gender-based violence, and sexual violence more generally. Less research has examined community violence among PWH. In this analysis, we test the association between hate crime experience and mental and HIV outcomes in a sample of adults with HIV, majority of whom are Black/African American, living in Atlanta, Georgia. SETTING: PWH were recruited from HIV service settings (N = 285) to participate in a cross-sectional study.

Hourly Associations Between Uplifting, Humorous, and Hateful Social Media Content Exposure and Subjective Well-Being in Two Adolescent Cohorts.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent social media experiences are diverse and may vary based on developmental stage. The associations that these experiences have with subjective well-being may also vary in that different associations may emerge when examining relations at the immediate within-person level versus the general person-level. METHODS: The current study utilized an ecological momentary assessment design to examine how exposure to three types of social media content (uplifting, humorous, hateful) related to affect and state self-esteem three times per day for 14 days. These associations were ex

"Someone who hates themself doesn't come for their drugs": Experiences of mental health along the HIV care continuum in South-Central, Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Poor mental health occurs more frequently among people living with HIV. Understanding what mental health problems occur and at what point during the continuum of HIV care is critical to ensure these problems are identified and appropriately addressed. We explored how mental health is experienced along the HIV care continuum in Rakai, Uganda. METHODS: We conducted qualitative semi-structured in-depth interviews with 20 adults living with HIV and 10 health workers from March to December 2020. Interviews followed a timeline approach. Responses were analyzed using content analysis.

"No one can hate you more than I do": The perverse interplay of life and death drives in Roman Polanski's film Bitter Moon.

In this paper, the authors explore the depiction of perversion and the associated interplay of life and death drives in Roman Polanski's 1992 film Bitter Moon. To begin with, a theoretical discussion is presented regarding perverse organizations of mastery and sadomasochism. Perversion is viewed as an expression of the death drive under erotic disguise, in which the destructive fingerprint of the death drive is revealed at every stage, having as its ultimate purpose the destruction of the other. Based on these theoretical insights a dialogue is developed with Polanski's film, which brings to l

The immolation of an Indian bus driver in Brisbane, Australia: delusional disorder, not a 'hate crime' In the matter of Anthony O'Donohue [2018] QMHC 8, Dalton J.

In October 2016, a burning liquid was thrown over a bus driver in Brisbane, Australia. It was reported across the world that the 29-year-old bus driver was a Punjabi Indian and that his killing may have been a hate crime. A subsequent independent inquiry found that 50-year-old Anthony O'Donohue, who was charged with murder and other offences, had a long history of mental illness and had been discharged from treatment from a community mental health service four-and-a-half months earlier. In August 2018, the Queensland Mental Health Court found that, at the time of the alleged offences, Mr O'Don

"It's kind of hard to go to the doctor's office if you're hated there." A call for gender-affirming care from transgender and gender diverse adolescents in the United States.

Research has identified discrimination and a lack of knowledgeable providers as major barriers for transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals seeking care, which contributes to greater stress and significant health disparities affecting this population. However, research involving TGD youth is limited. The aim of this study, therefore, was to describe TGD adolescents' experiences, concerns and needs in healthcare settings, including their feedback on themes previously identified by healthcare providers (i.e. discomfort with gender-related topics, reasons for not asking patients about gen

Testing the Healthy Context Paradox: Classroom Counter Speech as a Contextual Resource and Cross-Level Moderator of the Association Between Hate Speech Victimization and Students' Well-Being.

Hate speech targets individuals based on actual or perceived group characteristics and has been linked to psychological distress during adolescence. Drawing on the Healthy Context Paradox, this study examined whether classroom-level counter speech-visible peer opposition to hate speech-operates as (a) a contextual resource associated with average classroom well-being and (b) a cross-level moderator, meaning that it changes the strength of the association between individual hate speech victimization and mental well-being. Cross-sectional survey data were obtained from 3,225 students in Grades 7

Childhood maltreatment must lead to hate? The relation between childhood maltreatment and social mindfulness among college students: the roles of self-compassion, shyness and hostile attribution bias.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment represents a significant distal risk factor for the social adaptation and development of children and adolescents. However, the impact of childhood maltreatment on individuals' social mindfulness-an emerging form of "effortless" prosocial behavior-remains largely unexplored. OBJECTIVE: To address the gap in understanding the relationship between childhood maltreatment and social mindfulness, To address the gap in understanding the relationship between childhood maltreatment and social mindfulness, we conducted a cross-sectional study to clarify their associa

The Burden of Witnessing: The Impact of Vicarious Experiences of Racism & Anti-Immigrant Discrimination on Healthcare Utilization.

Experiencing racism and anti-immigrant discrimination has a negative impact on health, including healthcare utilization. A growing body of research has connected vicarious experiences of racism and anti-immigrant discrimination to health decline; however, there is a dearth of literature examining the impact of these vicarious experiences on healthcare utilization. Using data from the 2023 and 2024 California Health Interview Survey (n = 46,481), we examined the association between vicarious experiences of hate incidents in the last 12 months motivated by race or skin color and immigration stat

The "second injury" to victims of violent acts. 1980.

This paper, originally published in 1980, is a significant contribution to the study of psychological trauma and its treatment; particularly countertransference aspects of that treatment. Initially it was widely cited but then became little known, largely because of the inaccessibility of the original publication. The three major concepts in Symond's approach are: (1) self-hate and shame are the key dynamics in post traumatic distress; (2) ordinary professional attitudes of those who are supposed to help often intensify the traumatized person's self-hate and shame. Martin Symonds called this i
