Ovarian hormone depletion affects cortical bone quality differently on different skeletal envelopes.

The physical properties of bone tissue are determined by the organic and mineral matrix, and are one aspect of bone quality. As such, the properties of mineral and matrix are a major contributor to bone strength, independent of bone mass. Cortical bone quality may differ regionally on the three skeletal envelopes that compose it. Each of these envelopes may be affected differently by ovarian hormone depletion. Identifying how these regions vary in their tissue adaptive response to ovarian hormones can inform our understanding of how tissue quality contributes to overall bone strength in postme

The sealed osteons of cortical diaphyseal bone. Early observations revisited with scanning electron microscopy.

The frequency, structure, mode of formation and significance of sealed osteons remain unsettled. Sealed osteons have been reported as an unusual finding in the cortical bone of experimental animals: we extended the observation to human cortical bone studied with SEM. Tibial bone specimens from three patients who sustained a traumatic below-the-knee amputation were used in the study. The observed total mean density of osteons was 19.25/mm(2) and the percentage of sealed and partially sealed osteons was 4.2% and 1.7% respectively. The material sealing the central canal showed an X-ray microanaly

A novel mechanism for induction of increased cortical porosity in cases of intracapsular hip fracture.

It has been suggested that, in hip fracture, the cortex on the inferoanterior (IA) to superoposterior (SP) axis is thinned and shows increased porosity. This is dependent on the presence of giant canals (i.e., diameter >385 microm), which are related to clusters of remodeling osteons. To investigate further the relationship between remodeling and bone loss, osteonal diameter (On.Dm), wall thickness (W.Th), osteoid width (O.Wi), and extent (OS) were measured in femoral neck biopsies from 12 female intracapsular hip fracture cases and 11 age- and gender-matched controls. Over 83% of giant canals

Bone growth, modeling and remodeling in a supernumerary metatarsal bone associated with segmental gigantism in cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita.

Skeletal structure and processes of bone growth, modeling and remodeling were studied in a supernumerary metatarsal surgically removed from a 3-year-old boy affected by Cutis Marmorata Telangiectatica Congenita (CMTC), associated with hypertrophy of the right upper and lower limbs and postaxial hexadactylism of the homolateral hand and foot. No other anomalies were observed. The excess of periosteal growth, due to congenital anomaly, induced an abnormal development of both modeling and remodeling processes. In bone modeling, osteoblast activity on the periosteal surface was not paralleled by o

Bone changes after maxillary sinus surgery: an experimental scanning electron microscopy study.

AIMS: The purpose of this study was to explore the pathogenic role of bone in sinus surgery, and to determine whether mucosal disease after sinus surgery may be induced by underlying disease within the bone. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-five rabbits were divided into five groups. In group one, wide surgical removal of the maxillary sinus mucosa and creation of a nasoantral window were undertaken. In group two, only nasoantral window creation was undertaken. In group three, the mucosa of the anterior maxillary sinus was removed. In group four, a strip of mucosa around the ostium was removed. Supravalvular aortic stenosis with parafollicular cell (C-cell) hyperplasia.

Autopsy examination of a patient with well-documented supravalvular aortic stenosis and other characteristic features of the idiopathic infantile hypercalcemia syndrome revealed previously unreported hyperplasia of parafollicular cells (C cells). Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated up to 30 calcitonin-containing cells per high power field, whereas normal glands contain only 4 to 10 cells per low power field in areas of highest concentration. The parathyroid glands were found to be normal both grossly and microscopically, whereas the bones showed thickened trabeculas, normal Haversian can

Immunohistochemical analysis of bone metabolism in osteonecrosis of the femoral head.

Osteonecrosis of the femoral head occurs because of the suppression of blood circulation. At the level of the area affected by the ischemic phenomenon, there are two types of events, in the first stage there is necrosis of the cellular elements, followed by a reparatory phase of the spongy bone tissue. The objective of the study was the histological and immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis of bone metabolism in the repair phase. We observed the action of the main cells involved in the remodeling, the osteoblasts and the osteoclasts, following the reaction of the markers of their activity: osteop

Preliminary study of histological comparison on the growth patterns of long-bone cortex in young calf, pig, and sheep.

Some young large farm animals show a laminar bone formation in the long-bone cortex. Such a laminar bone is gradually replaced by Haversian bone with osteons during their growth periods. In this preliminary study, we observed the transverse ground samples of tibia cortex in young calves, pigs, and sheep by backscattered electron imaging. The cortex bones of all the newborn (NB) animals were basically formed with laminar bone structures. The NB and 1-month-old (1-M) calves had a typical concentric structure of laminar bone, whereas the NB and 1-M pigs showed a wire-netting bone with laminar-bon

Metabolic pathways of the fossil dinosaur bones. Part V. Morphological differentiation of osteocyte lacunae and bone canaliculi and their significance in the system of extracellular communication.

The study was carried out on dinosaur bones nearly 80 million years old. Samples for examination were prepared with specially elaborated methods. The light and transmission electron microscopic images permitted two kinds of bone lacunae and two types of paralacunar canalicular endings to be distinguished. The lacunae of the first kind were characterized by their elongated shape, their length exceeding their width several times, their dimensions being 31.2/9.4 microns. The lacunae of the other kind were not so long, their mean measurements amounting to 21.32/9.7 microns. Among the paralacunar c

Regional accelerated phenomenon in the mandible following mucoperiosteal flap surgery.

Striking remodeling activity occurs adjacent to the site of injury in orthopedic surgery. This reaction has been described as regional accelerated phenomenon (RAP), as it speeds up the healing stage. The phenomenon is a transient burst of localized remodeling process following surgical wounding of cortical bone. We explored whether RAP occurs following mucoperiosteal flap surgery in the jaw bone. Mucoperiosteal flaps were performed on 60 Wistar rats, either only on the buccal aspect or both on buccal and lingual aspects of the mandible. The surgical procedure lasted an average of 30 seconds an

Inflammatory cell changes in haversian canals. A possible cause of osteoporosis in rheumatoid arthritis.

We studied the morphology of the haversian canals in the osteopenic cortical bone of the medial femoral neck from patients with rheumatoid arthritis and compared the findings with those in patients with osteoarthritis and with uncomplicated coxa valga. In the rheumatoid bone, the diameters of the canals were larger and many more contained osteoclasts. Fewer haversian canals showed only lining cells than in the osteoarthritic or coxa valga patients. In bone from rheumatoid patients, especially in canals with osteoclasts, small blood vessels were frequently lined by tall endothelial cells with a

Mathematically modeling fluid flow and fluid shear stress in the canaliculi of a loaded osteon.

BACKGROUND: Mechanical load-induced intraosseous pressure gradients may result in some fluid stimuli effects, such as fluid flow and fluid shear stress (FSS), which may enable bone cells to detect external mechanical signals. Interstitial bone fluid flow is known to occur in lacunar-canalicular porosity (PLC). METHODS: In order to characterize lacunar-canalicular fluid flow behavior, a hierarchical osteon system is developed. The osteon is modeled as a poroelastic annular cylinder with two types of impermeable boundary cases considered on its outer wall: one is elastic restrained (Case I), wh

A new histologic approach to the differentiation of enchondroma and chondrosarcoma of the bones. A clinicopathologic analysis of 51 cases.

Fifty-one cases of central, hyalin cartilage tumors of the long and flat bones were analyzed. Although Grade 2 and 3 chondrosarcomas could be diagnosed on the basis of cytologic features alone, low-grade chondrosarcoma could not be adequately differentiated from pure, benign enchondroma(s) by cytology alone. The tumors can be distinguished by a new histologic approach based on tissue patterns. The crucial enchondroma patterns consist of multiple nodules of hyalin cartilage separated by normal marrow in conjunction with partial to complete encompassing plates of lamellar bone that conform to th

The lack of mass transfer in bone lacunar-canalicular system may be the decisive factor of osteoporosis under microgravity.

During spaceflight, astronauts experience 1-1.5% bone loss per month, especially in the lumbar spine, pelvis and lower limbs. The bone loss leads to osteoporosis and increased the risk of fracture. Current researches focus on anti-osteoporosis under microgravity mainly by inhibiting bone resorption of osteoclasts and / or increasing bone formation of osteoblasts. However, studies on the effects of mass transfer in the bone lacunar-canalicular system (LCS) on osteoporosis are lacking. Osteocytes reside in the lacunae and communicate with other osteocytes, osteoblasts and osteoclasts through the

Fungal osteomyelitis of maxillofacial bones: Rare presentation.

Osteomyelitis is defined as inflammation of the medullary cavities, haversian system and adjacent cortex of bone. Osteomyelitis involving maxilla is quite rare when compared to that of mandible. Fungal osteomyelitis is very rarely seen and documented in the maxillofacial area. It is devastating to patients if it is invasive in nature. A prospective study was undertaken from December 2011 to December 2013. Biopsied hard tissue bits were decalcified and sections were stained with H&E, periodic acid Schiff and Grocott methenamine silver. Culture sensitivity was carried out in all cases. Surgical

Collagen fiber organization is related to mechanical properties and remodeling in equine bone. A comparison of two methods.

We studied birefringence as an indicator of collagen fiber orientation in the diaphysis of the equine third metacarpal bone. We had previously shown that tissue from the lateral cortex of this bone is stronger monotonically, but less fatigue resistant, than tissue from the medial and dorsal regions. To learn whether collagen fiber orientation might play a role in this regional specialization, we tested three hypotheses using the same specimens: (1) collagen fiber orientation is regionally dependent; (2) remodeling changes collagen fiber orientation; (3) longitudinal collagen fibers correlate p

The actions of parathyroid hormone on bone: relation to bone remodeling and turnover, calcium homeostasis, and metabolic bone disease. Part I of IV parts: mechanisms of calcium transfer between blood and bone and their cellular basis: morphological and kinetic approaches to bone turnover.

The supracellular organization of living bone enables the study of isolated cellular and subcellular systems to be related to the study of the whole organism. Bone is formed by osteoblasts in successive stages, separated in both time and space, of matrix formation and primary mineralization. Osteoblasts are joined by tight junctions and largely cover the osteoid seam which separates them from mineralized bone. Secondary mineralization is not completed for several months and is not regulated by the osteoblast. Bone is resorbed by osteoclasts which simultaneously accomplish mineral dissolution a

Histological estimation of age at death in amputated lower limbs: Issues of disuse, advanced age, and disease in the analysis of pathological bone.

Histological studies of healed bone tissue following amputation are relatively rare in the literature. This study describes the histomorphological features of femoral thin sections from six uni- and bi-lateral amputees of documented age and sex. Thin sections were cut from the midshaft of both the right and left femora from each amputee and analyzed following standard forensic methods for histological estimation of age at death from the human femur. The histological age at death estimations for the thin sections from amputated bone were consistently lower than the actual chronological age of e
