Neurobehavioral risk factors influence prevalence and severity of hazardous substance use in youth at genetic and clinical high risk for psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Elevated rates of alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis use are observed in both patients with psychotic disorders and individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR-P), and strong genetic associations exist between substance use disorders and schizophrenia. While individuals with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22qDel) are at increased genetic risk for psychosis, initial evidence suggests that they have strikingly low rates of substance use. In the current study, we aimed to directly compare substance use patterns and their neurobehavioral correlates in genetic and clinical high-risk co

The mammalian toxicological hazards of petroleum-derived substances: an overview of the petroleum industry response to the high production volume challenge program.

Petroleum-derived substances are complex and composed of aliphatic (normal-, iso-, and cycloparaffins), olefinic, and/or aromatic constituents. Approximately 400 of these complex substances were evaluated as part of the US Environmental Protection Agency voluntary High Production Volume (HPV) Challenge program. The substances were separated into 13 groups (categories), and all available data were assessed. Toxicology testing was conducted as necessary to fully address the end points encompassed by the HPV initiative. In a broad sense, volatile hydrocarbons may cause acute central nervous syste

Environmental persistence and inefficiency of natural attenuation in the removal of pyrolysis oils in Canadian marine waters under cold temperatures: Implications for hazardous and noxious substances spill preparedness.

Pyrolysis oils are emerging alternative fuels that are increasingly being transported in marine environments. Although produced from renewable resources, their physicochemical properties result in their classification as hazardous and noxious substances (HNS). Limited information is available regarding the effectiveness of traditional clean-up and remediation strategies for their removal across geographically distinct marine environments, under cold-water conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of natural attenuation in three Canadian marine environments under

Development of a risk-based prioritisation methodology to inform public health emergency planning and preparedness in case of accidental spill at sea of hazardous and noxious substances (HNS).

Hazardous and noxious chemicals are increasingly being transported by sea. Current estimates indicate some 2000 hazardous and noxious substances (HNS) are carried regularly by sea with bulk trade of 165milliontonnes per year worldwide. Over 100 incidents involving HNS have been reported in EU waters. Incidents occurring in a port or coastal area can have potential and actual public health implications. A methodology has been developed for prioritisation of HNS, based upon potential public health risks. The work, undertaken for the Atlantic Region Pollution Response programme (ARCOPOL), aims to

Using a food web model to predict the effects of Hazardous and Noxious Substances (HNS) accidental spills on deep-sea hydrothermal vents from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) region.

Deep-sea hydrothermal vents host unique ecosystems but face risks of incidents with Hazardous and Noxious Substances (HNS) along busy shipping lanes such as the transatlantic route. We developed an Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) model of the Menez Gwen (MG) vent field (MG-EwE) (Mid-Atlantic Ridge) to simulate ecosystem effects of potential accidental spills of four different HNS, using a semi-Lagrangian Dispersion Model (sLDM) coupled with the Regional Ocean Modelling System (ROMS) calibrated for the study area. Food web modelling revealed a simplified trophic structure with low energy efficiency.

Lessons Learned from Implementing a Centrally Organized, Cross-Sectoral, Patient-Centered Treatment Coordination System for Hazardous Substance Use and Substance Use Disorders: The Randomized Controlled ASSIST Study.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Although effective treatments for substance use disorders (SUDs) are available in Germany, only a fraction of individuals use them. Barriers include the complexity of the addiction support system, implementation challenges, limited coordination and communication between the different sectors and services, and stigma-related factors such as shame and guilt. Innovative, accessible, and patient-centered care models are rarely effectively implemented. The ASSIST study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a sector-independent, individualized treatment coordination mod

Predictors of time to relapse in amphetamine-type substance users in the matrix treatment program in Iran: a Cox proportional hazard model application.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine which predictors influence the risk of relapse among a cohort of amphetamine-type substance (ATS) users in Iran. METHODS: A Cox proportional hazards model was conducted to determine factors associated with the relapse time in the Matrix treatment program provided by the Iranian National Center of Addiction Studies (INCAS) between March 2010 and October 2011. RESULTS: Participating in more treatment sessions was associated with a lower probability of relapse. On the other hand, patients with less family support, longer dependence on ATS, and

Does naloxone provision lead to increased substance use? A systematic review to assess if there is evidence of a 'moral hazard' associated with naloxone supply.

BACKGROUND: Take home naloxone (THN) programs have been rapidly upscaled in response to increasing opioid-related mortality. One often cited concern is that naloxone provision could be associated with increased opioid use, due to the availability of naloxone to reverse opioid overdose. We conducted a systematic review to determine whether THN provision is associated with changes in substance use by participants enrolled in THN programs. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of the literature to assess changes in heroin or other substance use by people who use opioids following THN provisi

Monthly patterns of depressive symptoms and substance use and their relation to longer-term hazardous substance use and mental health problems: Examining mutual maintenance using monthly data from young adults.

The current study examined whether young adults showing a pattern of greater substance use on months when experiencing greater levels of depressive symptoms showed long-term hazardous alcohol and cannabis use and elevated depressive symptoms. Data were from 772 young adults in Washington State (mean age = 21.1 years, SD = 1.7; 57 % female). For 24 consecutive months, surveys asked about past-month depressive symptoms and typical number of alcoholic drinks per week and typical number hours high on cannabis per week. Participants completed a survey 30 months after baseline that included measures

Transcriptomic points of departure from the aquatic insect Chironomus dilutus for 22 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and their use in chemical hazard screening.

High throughput (HTP) assays using aquatic species are being developed in response to the large number of chemicals in or entering commerce with little aquatic toxicological data. Transcriptomic points of departure (tPODs) coupled to HTP assays have shown promise in efficiently assessing possible toxicity of chemicals. With thousands of identified per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) such strategies are required to assess their potential hazard to aquatic species. This study investigated the utility of a HTP transcriptomic assay with an aquatic insect (Chironomus dilutus) to assess the t

Community Reinforcement and Family Training versus counselling for parents of treatment-refusing young adults with hazardous substance use: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Despite the high prevalence and negative effects of hazardous substance use, few young adults enter treatment. Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT), a support programme for concerned significant others of people with substance use disorders, has proved efficacious in promoting treatment entry. The aim of the current trial was to compare the efficacy of CRAFT with an active control for parents of young adults (aged 18-24 years) with hazardous substance use. DESIGN: This was a randomized controlled superiority trial comparing CRAFT (n = 58) with an active con

Application of a series of biomarkers in Scallop Chlamys farreri to assess the toxic effects after exposure to a priority hazardous and noxious substance (HNS)-Acrylonitrile.

The antioxidant enzymes and detoxification parameters responses of the scallop Chlamys farreri to different degree of acrylonitrile (AN) were investigated. Accordingly, the median lethal concentration (LC50) at 96 h was 98.5 mg/L AN. Results from chronic toxicity test demonstrated that superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were stimulated in the highest two doses of AN (2.0 and 5.0 mg/L), but significantly inhibited in the highest concentration (5.0 mg/L) at the end of the exposure. The levels of DNA strand breaks, lipid peroxidation (LPO) and protein carb

Causal inference of whole-grain foods' risk based on a generative adversarial network and Bayesian network.

Whole-grain foods (WGFs) constitute a large part of humans' daily diet, making risk identification of WGFs important for health and safety. However, existing research on WGFs has paid more attention to revealing the effects of a single hazardous substance or various hazardous substances on food safety, neglecting the mutual influence between individual hazardous substances and between hazardous substances and basic information. Therefore, this paper proposes a causal inference of WGFs' risk based on a generative adversarial network (GAN) and Bayesian network (BN) to explore the mutual influenc

Public health consequences among first responders to emergency events associated with illicit methamphetamine laboratories--selected states, 1996-1999.

Methamphetamine, a central nervous system stimulant, is manufactured in illicit laboratories using over-the-counter ingredients. Many of these ingredients are hazardous substances that when released from active or abandoned methamphetamine laboratories can place first responders at risk for serious injuries and death. In 16 states, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry maintains the Hazardous Substances Emergency Events Surveillance (HSEES) system to collect and analyze data about the morbidity and mortality associated with hazardous substance-release events.
