Clostridium botulinum and bio-compost. A contribution to the analysis of potential health hazards caused by bio-waste recycling.

Bio-waste recycling and the production and use of bio-compost are politically encouraged in Europe. Quality control takes no consideration of pathogenic anaerobic spore formers, e.g. Clostridium botulinum. A protocol for health hazard analysis concerning this pathogen has been developed. Samples of marketed bio-compost were tested and results showed that about 50% of the tested samples contained C. botulinum. For the first time it has been shown that the use of bio-compost represents a health hazard to humans and animals, especially in the future when spores will have accumulated in the enviro

Data linkage to explore the risk of low birthweight associated with maternal proximity to hazardous waste sites from the National Priorities List.

Data from the 1988 National Maternal and Infant Health Survey files were linked with data from the 1990 Environmental Protection Agency National Priorities List of hazardous waste sites to determine whether any relationship existed between living in proximity to hazardous waste sites and low birthweight. The odds ratio for low birthweight versus normal birthweight was 1.03 (95% confidence interval [95% CI] = 0.98-1.16), and remained at 0.99 (95% CI = 0.86-1.16) when adjusted for maternal age, parity, infant sex, prenatal care, and behavioral and socioeconomic factors. Very low birthweight, inf

Phytoremediation mechanism and role of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria in weed plants for eco-restoration of hazardous industrial waste polluted site: a review.

Plants have numerous strategies for phytoremediation depending upon the characteristic of pollutants. Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are essential to the process of phytoremediation and play a key part in it. The mechanism of PGPR for phytoremediation is mediated by two methods; under the direct method there is phytohormone production, nitrogen fixation, nutrient mineral solubilization, and siderophore production while the indirect method includes quorum quenching, antibiosis, production of lytic enzyme, biofilm formation, and hydrogen cyanide production. Due to their economic and

Pyrolysis of Ca/Fe-rich antibiotic fermentation residues into biochars for efficient phosphate removal/recovery from wastewater: Turning hazardous waste to phosphorous fertilizer.

Ca/Fe-rich antibiotic fermentation residues (AFRs), a type of hazardous waste, can be regarded as recyclable biomass and metal resources. However, concurrent detoxification and reutilization of biomass and metals resources from AFRs have never been reported before. In this study, Ca/Fe-rich vancomycin fermentation residues were pyrolyzed into biochar to adsorb phosphate for the first time. The residual vancomycin and antibiotic resistance genes were completely decomposed during pyrolysis. The resultant Ca/Fe-rich biochar exhibited excellent performance at adsorbing phosphate without further mo

Exocrine pancreatic cancer and living near to waste sites containing hazardous organic chemicals, New York State, USA - an 18-year population-based study.

OBJECTIVES: The etiology of exocrine pancreatic cancer (EPC) remains unknown except for family history and smoking. Despite recent medical advances, rates of pancreatic cancer incidence and mortality are increasing. Although existing evidence suggests a potentially causal relationship between environmental chemical exposures and pancreatic cancer, whether residential exposure impacts pancreatic cancer rates remains unknown. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The authors identified 28 941 patients diagnosed with exocrine pancreatic cancer in New York State exclusive of New York City for the years 1996-2013

Eco-geological consequences of textile processing wastes: Risk assessment, elemental dissolution kinetics, and health hazard potential.

Although substantial quantities of toxic wastes are generated from textile industries, the characteristics of textile processing wastes (TPWs) have yet scantily been investigated from ecological and agricultural perspectives. Here, the eco-geological consequences of TPWs are evaluated by considering three types of sludges (i.e., silk fibre sludge (SFS), dye mixed silk processing sludge (DSPS), and cotton processing wastewater sludge (CPWS)). The predominance of certain components between different wastes (e.g., fibrous substances in silk industry wastes (i.e., SFS and DSPS) and amorphous mater

Strategic hazard mitigation of waste furniture boards via pyrolysis: Pyrolysis behavior, mechanisms, and value-added products.

Waste furniture boards (WFBs) contain hazardous formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds when left unmanaged or improperly disposed through landfilling and open burning. In this study, pyrolysis was examined as a disposal and recovery approach to convert three types of WFBs (i.e., particleboard, plywood, and fiberboard) into value-added chemicals using thermogravimetric analysis coupled with Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (TG-FTIR) and pyrolysis coupled with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). TG-FTIR analysis shows that pyrolysis performed at an optimum temperature of

Stabilization/solidification (S/S) of mercury-contaminated hazardous wastes using thiol-functionalized zeolite and Portland cement.

Stabilization/solidification (S/S) of mercury-containing solid wastes using thiol-functionalized zeolite and cement was investigated in this study. The thiol-functionalized zeolite (TFZ) used in the study was obtained by grafting the thiol group (-SH) to the natural clinoptilolite zeolites, and the mercury adsorption by TFZ was investigated. TFZ was used to stabilize mercury in solid wastes, and then the stabilized wastes were subjected to cement solidification to test the effectiveness of the whole S/S process. The results show that TFZ has a high level of -SH content (0.562 mmol g(-1)) and t

Study on the mechanisms of heavy metal immobilization and migration in the plasma co-melting process of iron-rich hazardous waste fly ash and bottom ash.

Hazardous fly ash (HFA) contains large amounts of toxic heavy metals and poses significant potential risks to the environment. In this study, HFA was co-melted with hazardous bottom ash (HBA) and waste glass (WG) in a plasma system to investigate its vitrification behavior, heavy metal migration, and solidification mechanisms. The results indicate high vitrification efficiency (99.5 %) and ash solidification rate (97.1 %). The original multi-phase crystalline structure transformed into a structure dominated by an amorphous silicate network following plasma melting and rapid cooling. The surfac

A Community-Engaged Oral History Study as a Tool for Understanding Environmental Justice Aspects of Human Exposures to Hazardous Waste Thermal Treatment Emissions in Colfax, LA.

This study investigates environmental justice (EJ) themes related to siting a hazardous waste thermal treatment facility near a low-income community of color. We investigated effects of living near a hazardous waste thermal treatment facility through three EJ aspects: recognitional, procedural, and distributive justice. The study involved the collection of oral history interviews from residents of Colfax, a town in Grant Parish, Louisiana, that hosts an open burn/open detonation hazardous waste thermal treatment facility. The facility processes materials such as munitions, theme park waste, an

Experimental Investigation of Compaction Deformation and Seepage Mechanism of Granular Waste Rock Backfill Materials for Mitigating Mining-Induced Water Hazards.

The development of mining-induced fracture zones in the backfilling working face near the aquifer significantly increases the seepage risk of granular waste rock backfill materials (GWRBMs), posing threats to groundwater resources and security problems. This study experimentally investigates the coupled effects of overburden stress and particle size distribution on the non-Darcy seepage characteristics of GWRBMs. A novel stepwise seepage pressure testing apparatus was designed to simulate axial loading stress (0∼15 MPa) and seepage pressure (1∼8 MPa), enabling the simultaneous monitoring of di

From indoors to outdoors: Impact of waste anesthetic gases on occupationally exposed professionals and related environmental hazards - A narrative review and update.

Waste anesthetic gases (WAGs) are trace-concentration inhaled anesthetics that exist worldwide because they are released into the ambient air of operating rooms (ORs) and post-anesthesia care units. WAGs cause indoor contamination, especially in ORs lacking proper scavenging systems, and occupational exposure, while promoting climate change through greenhouse gas/ozone-depleting effects. Despite these controversial features, WAGs continue to pose occupational health hazards. Occupational exposure to WAGs has been linked to oxidative stress and cytotoxic, genotoxic and mutagenic potential. This

Metagenomic characterization of antibiotic resistance genes and human bacterial pathogens in groundwater from agricultural, landfill, and hazardous waste disposal sites (HWDS) sources: Drivers, risks, and source tracking.

Agricultural sources, landfills, and hazardous waste disposal sites (HWDS) are major hotspots for the spread of groundwater antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and human bacterial pathogens (HBPs). However, there is a lack of systematic understanding regarding the environmental behavior of groundwater ARGs, the pathogenic risks of HBPs, and the relative contribution mechanisms of different sources, presenting critical scientific challenges for developing targeted groundwater pollution control strategies. To address this, this study collected 26 groundwater metagenomic samples to characterize th

Speciation of copper and zinc compounds relevant for the hazard property (HP) 14 classification of municipal solid waste incineration bottom and fly ashes.

The analysis of the presence and content of substances that are toxic to aquatic life in waste is essential for classification of waste with regard to hazard property (HP) 14 'ecotoxic'. For the determination of HP14 classified copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) compounds in various municipal solid waste incineration bottom ashes (IBA) and one fly ash (FA) from Germany we applied X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy in combination with linear combination fitting. The analysis showed that approx. 50-70% of Cu in the IBA are Cu(I) compounds and elemental Cu(0), but these compounds we

Fabrication of chitosan coated bentonite clay multifunctional nanosorbents from waste biomass for the effective elimination of hazardous pollutants from waterbodies: A fixed bed biosorption, mechanism, and mathematical model study.

The anthropogenic activity and hasty fluctuating technologies have been responsible for the generation of massive effluent which is so hazardous due to the loading of several toxicants. While most industries usually discharge it directly into the environment resulting in harsh damage to the ecology/public security. Therefore, it is critical to treat with a sustainable/cost-effective technique. Here, a new route of fabrication of chitosan-coated activated natural bentonite clay (CCANBC) bionanocomposites/bionanosorbents from waste biomass has been developed. Their potential application for the

Kill two birds with one stone: The management of hazardous waste and the preparation of efficient adsorbents for Pb(II) were realized by the pyrolysis of penicillin mycelial dreg.

The penicillin industry produces a large amount of penicillin mycelial dreg (PMD), potentially causing severe environmental problems without proper treatment and disposal. To achieve the goals of PMD management, the present work explored the potential of PMD as a novel feedstock to produce biochar with very high adsorption performance. PMD was pyrolyzed at 400-800 °C to prepare biochars (PMD-BCs), and the physical and chemical properties were characterized using various methods. The adsorption capacities of Pb2+ on PMD-BC400, PMD-BC600, and PMD-BC800 were 37.04, 62.89, and 107.53 mg/g, respect
