AIM: Approximately 66% of head and neck cancers are diagnosed at an advanced stage. This prospective study aimed to detect newly diagnosed head and neck cancers using regular upper gastrointestinal (UGI) endoscopy with oral-pharynx-larynx examination.
METHODS: A total of 2,849 patients underwent UGI endoscopy with an additional oral-pharynx-larynx examination. Patients aged < 20 years, those who were pregnant, had a history of head and neck cancers, were undergoing emergency endoscopy, and had a poor laryngopharyngeal view were excluded. The symptoms, incidence, location, pathology, and stage

Malignant lymphomas represent approximately 5% of all malignant neoplasms of the head and neck and may involve nodal or extranodal sites. Nodal head and neck lymphomas are similar to other nodal sites and are not further reviewed here. The head and neck region is the second most frequent anatomical site of extranodal lymphomas (after the gastrointestinal tract). Most are non-Hodgkin's lymphomas of B-cell lineage, and overall diffuse large B-cell lymphoma is the most common type. Hodgkin's lymphoma rarely occurs in extranodal sites. Other hematologic neoplasms that commonly involve extranodal s

Head and neck cancer is often associated with second primary neoplasms. These cancers most commonly involve other regions of the head and neck, esophagus, and lung. The majority of cases are also squamous cell carcinomas. In view of this rather frequent occurrence of multiple primary cancers and how they adversely affect the patient's survival, it becomes imperative to analyze how the clinician can intervene effectively. One such approach is to detect multiple primaries as early as possible. As such, panendoscopy as a part of the tumor-staging procedure has been advocated by many investigators

Basaloid neoplasms of the head and neck region pose a specific challenge both for clinicians and pathologists. It is a diverse group of neoplasms that include benign as well as malignant entities. These neoplasms can arise from various head and neck subsites such as skin, salivary gland, and sinonasal tract. Cytological diagnosis of these tumors is extremely difficult due to morphological overlap with other biphasic tumors and within the basaloid group itself. Here, we are presenting a case of basaloid neoplasm which turned out to be a basal cell adenocarcinoma of the left parotid gland on pos

BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal lesions of the head-and-neck encompass a wide spectrum of benign and malignant tumors, many of which present diagnostic challenges due to overlapping histomorphological features. In India, especially in regions like Uttar Pradesh, the high prevalence of tobacco and areca nut use contributes to a notable burden of head-and-neck neoplasms.
AIM: To investigate the histopathological spectrum of mesenchymal lesions in the head-and-neck region, with correlation to clinical parameters and Immunohistochemistry analysis at a tertiary care center.

BACKGROUND: Fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computerized tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) uptake is known to increase in infective and inflammatory conditions. Systemic inflammation plays a role in oncologic prognosis. Consequently, bone marrow increased uptake in oncology patients could potentially depict the systemic cancer burden.
METHODS: A single institute cohort analysis and a systematic review were performed, evaluating the prognostic role of 18F-FDG uptake in the bone marrow in solid neoplasms before treatment. The cohort included 113 esophageal cancer patients

The aim of this review was to present plasma cell neoplasms, their development, common features and classification. Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is a most often plasma cell neoplasm in the head and neck. 80-90% EMP cases concern to head and neck: 40% nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, about 20% nasopharynx, 18% oropharynx. Tumour symptoms are similar like in other neoplasm. It is very important to remember about plasma cell neoplasm during differential diagnosis because of relatively common occurrence. Extramedullary plasmacytoma is radiosensitive neoplasm with good prognosis therefore r

PURPOSE: Because of their relative rarity, bone and soft tissue lesions of the head and neck region can present a diagnostic challenge to anatomic pathologists who practice in a general surgical pathology model-while novel lesions may be unfamiliar to subspecialty head and neck pathologists.
METHODS: This review focuses on a diagnostically confounding neoplasm that arises in the bone (primary intraosseous rhabdomyosarcoma / FUS::TFCP2-rearranged spindle cell rhabdomyosarcoma) and soft tissue (trans-/de-/undifferentiated melanoma) of the head and neck region-each of which can easily be mistake

The clinical and histologic features of five homosexual men with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) who developed extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphomas of the head and neck region are presented. The primary sites of these malignant neoplasms include the larynx, palate, alveolar ridge, nasal vestibule, and skin overlying the mastoid tip. In all cases, the patients' lymphomas followed an aggressive clinical course with frequent central nervous system involvement. Although, to our knowledge, this is the first report of head and neck lymphomas in patients with AIDS, this malignant neoplasm has

Neoplasms of the head and neck constitute a broad spectrum of benign and malignant entities. When treatment involves resection, assessment of the surgical margins represents an important component of the pathologic examination. Margin status is an important indicator of a complete surgical resection. The ability to generalize conclusions such as 'safe distance' measurements from work performed mSCCa or cutaneous malignancy to other types of neoplasms in the head and neck region seems limited. This article reviews conditions and considerations for reliable margin assessment and interpretation.

Eighteen months after the resection and micro-vascular reconstruction of central ossifying fibroma of the right mandible in a 54-year-old male patient, there occur two synchronous neoplasms, basal cell adenoma (BSA) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Two years after reconstructive surgery, the patient reported a second primary OSCC on the left retromolar mucosa. This case reports two morphologically diverse benign neoplasms preceding metachronous OSCC in one individual. While field cancerization makes the entire mucosa susceptible to the development of multiple primary malignant neoplasm

Paragangliomas of the head and neck are uncommon neoplasms arising from the extra-adrenal paraganglia and include carotid body and glomus vagale tumors. These lesions may be discovered incidentally by imaging studies performed to evaluate carotid atherosclerotic occlusive disease. Incidental paragangliomas of the head and neck may be smaller than those discovered due to symptoms. Although surgical resection remains the definitive treatment for head and neck paragangliomas, important issues of management arise when such lesions are discovered. Two recent cases are reported. BACKGROUND: Lateral neck mass management frequently challenges surgeons. Nerve tissue neoplasms are an uncommon cause of such nodules. Neurogenic tumors form a tiny percentage of the head and neck neoplastic lesions. Considering the number of nerves in this area, it is surprising that such neoplasms are not more frequently seen.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on all patients who presented to the National Cancer Institute of Cairo, Egypt, with head and neck neurogenic neoplasms.
RESULTS: During the last 10 years at the National Cancer Institute of Egypt (2006-2015), 40 cases of

Histological reports on tumour specimens recorded at a teaching hospital in Accra, Ghana from 1989 to 2008 were reviewed to determine the incidence of head and neck tumours in children less than 16 years old. There were 4546 reports of head and neck tumours (2041 malignant, 2505 benign). Of these 613 met the study age selection criteria. 186(30.3%) were malignant and 427(69.7%) benign. The male to female ratio for malignant tumours was 1.86:1, benign 0.73:1 and for all tumours 1:1.04. Lymphoma (54.8%), nasopharyngeal carcinoma (19.9%) and rhabdomyosarcoma (14%), together constituted over 88% o

Primary neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) of the larynx and head and neck are an uncommon and heterogeneous group of neoplasms categorized by the 2017 WHO Classification of Head and Neck Tumors as: (a) well-differentiated (WD-NEC), (b) moderately-differentiated (MD-NEC), and (c) poorly-differentiated (PD-NEC) with small cell and large cell types. The classification incorporates elements of differentiation and grading and closely correlates to the 5-year disease specific survival of 100, 52.8, 19.3 and 15.3% for each diagnostic category. These survival rates are based on historical data limited

Osteolipomas are rare tumors, particularly in the head and neck region, in contrast to lipomas which are the most common benign neoplasms in this location. Osseous changes are benign and mainly occur in long-standing lipomas. Despite its rarity, this neoplasm has a characteristic histopathologic appearance with lamellar bony spicules within the mature adipose tissue. Of the 19 cases previously reported in the oropharyngeal area, only two were located in the submandibular region. We report the third case of submandibular osteolipoma, presenting as an asymptomatic mass in a middle-aged man. Our

BACKGROUND: Cystic lesions of the head and neck are a diagnostic challenge since they are seen in the clinical presentation of a wide variety of conditions. Herein, common and uncommon entities that present as cystic lesions in the head and neck are reviewed.
SUMMARY: In this study, peer-reviewed articles were selected using the database PubMed, Google, Google Scholar, and Scopus. Emphasis was placed on peer-reviewed articles that discuss the cytomorphology and differential diagnosis of entities that present as cystic lesions of the head and neck. In the anterior neck, both benign and maligna

In the 5th edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Head and Neck Tumours, the discussion of hematolymphoid proliferations is substantially reorganized and expanded in comparison to the prior edition. The 5th edition includes, in addition to hematolymphoid neoplasms, reactive lymphoid proliferations. Much more information on hematolymphoid proliferations that commonly affect cervical lymph nodes, in addition to those affecting extranodal sites in the head and neck, is included. For the first time, there are dedicated sections on multiple entities, including recently des

Extramedullary plasmacytoma in the head and neck region is a rare malignant neoplasm comprising approximately 3% of all the plasma cell neoplasms and less than 1% of head and neck tumors. This extraskeletal lesion is a unifocal, monoclonal, neoplastic proliferation of plasma cells. Some investigators believe that this lesion represents the least aggressive part of the spectrum of plasma cell neoplasms which extends to multiple myeloma. Therefore, plasmacytoma is believed to have clinical importance. We report a case of extramedullary plasmacytoma in the right maxillary sinus of a 65-year-old H

OBJECTIVE: Pilomatrixomas are benign skin neoplasms of hair follicle origin. They are one of the most common superficial masses of the head and neck excised in children. Although the entity has been well studied in the literature, few studies have been undertaken to evaluate the clinical characteristics of head and neck pilomatrixomas specifically in children. The purpose of this study was to review the clinical characteristics and management of children presenting with pilomatrixomas of the head and neck at a large tertiary care pediatric hospital.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective chart review
