A noxious agents information system with state-wide participation of the public health service.

With environmental health receiving increased attention by Public Health Services, there is a need to access as efficiently as possible detailed, current, and reliable information of physico-chemical, epidemiological, and toxicological as well as regulatory and legal aspects on this subject. Correspondingly, targets 19 and 35 of WHO's "Health for all 2000" strategy all for information systems to meet these demands. On this basis, a Noxious Agents Information System (NIS) was designed with three components: PC-based information workstations allowing access to portable and online databases; a de

Avoiding "shiny objects" and heeding "red flags": a sensemaking framework for emerging technology procurement.

OBJECTIVES: Health systems can be vulnerable to "shiny object syndrome," adopting unneeded emerging technologies (ETs), or may ignore "red flags" if they rely on linear health technology procurement processes that exclude the influence of information exchanges between the health system, vendors, and industry partners. METHODS: We conduct a post-hoc comparison of 2 procured communication-related clinical workflow ETs and examine ET-related IT Committee meetings within an academic medical center. We apply sensemaking theory, highlighting examples where sense-giving, sense-demanding, and sense-b

Developing a National eHealth Enterprise Architecture in Botswana: a digital health case study.

Botswana's health sector comprises numerous digital health systems that operate in isolation, thereby constraining interoperability, limiting data exchange, and hindering coordinated patient care. Although national strategies such as the Botswana eHealth Strategy (2020-24) articulate overarching digital health objectives, they offer limited technical direction for harmonizing digital investments and achieving system-wide interoperability. This article presents a national digital health case study detailing the development of the Botswana eHealth Enterprise Architecture, a strategic blueprint i

Communication Over Incarceration: Improving Care Coordination Between Correctional and Community Mental Health Services.

Millions of people are incarcerated every year in the United States, many of whom have mental disorders and substance use disorders. Alongside the considerable churn of people into and out of U.S. jails and prisons, numerous barriers often impede information exchange between correctional and community mental health services, disrupting continuity of care and threatening the well-being of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people. This Open Forum examines barriers to information sharing, a critical component of care coordination, between correctional and community mental health services and

Plasma exchange and glucocorticoid dosing in the treatment of anti-neutrophil cytoplasm antibody associated vasculitis (PEXIVAS): protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA, Wegener's) and microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) are small vessel vasculitides collectively referred to as anti-neutrophil cytoplasm antibody-associated vasculitis (AAV). AAV is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality due to uncontrolled disease and treatment toxicity. Small randomized trials suggest adjunctive plasma exchange may improve disease control, while observational evidence suggests that current oral glucocorticoid doses are associated with severe infections in patients with AAV. A randomized study of both plasma exchange

Examining Progress and Equity in Information Received by Women Using a Modern Method in 25 Developing Countries.

CONTEXT: The information exchanged during a contraceptive visit is important because providers need to understand clients' reproductive intentions and clients need to receive adequate information about methods and possible method-related side effects and problems. Little is known about how information exchange has changed over time and how it might vary across countries or subgroups within a country. METHODS: Demographic and Health Survey data from 25 developing countries were used to calculate the Method Information Index (MII), a Family Planning 2020 indicator that reflects some aspects of

Quarter of pig farmers readily viewed information on Toxoplasma gondii infection in pigs provided in a data exchange system of a Dutch slaughter company.

Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is a food safety hazard causing a substantial human disease burden. Because infected pig meat is estimated to attribute 12 % to this disease burden, it is important to control T. gondii infection in pigs. Providing pig farmers with information on T. gondii infection in general, and more specific on the status on their farm, could motivate them to take actions. In this study, we analysed the strategy pig farmers used to view specific T. gondii information provided for the first time on webpages in an existing data exchange system of a Dutch pig slaughter company. Innovative Information Technology-Powered Population Health Care Management Improves Outcomes and Reduces Hospital Readmissions and Emergency Department Visits.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic conditions are often the most frequent users of health care. Moreover, adapting to developments in one's illness, understanding how to self-manage a chronic illness, and sharing information between primary care and specialty providers, can be a full-time job for someone with a chronic illness. In response to these challenges, Christiana Care Health System (Wilmington, Delaware) developed Care Link, an information technology (IT)-enhanced care management support to enable populations of patients to achieve better clinical outcomes at lower cost. METHODS: In 20

Enhancing the quality and efficiency of newborn screening programs through the use of health information technology.

A variety of efforts are underway at national, state, regional, and local levels to enhance the performance of programs for early detection of inherited diseases and conditions of newborn infants. Newborn screening programs serve a vital purpose in identifying nonsymptomatic clinical conditions and enabling early intervention strategies that lessen morbidity and mortality. Currently, the programs of most intense focus are early hearing detection and intervention, using physiological techniques for audiology screening and use of newborn dried blood spots for detection of metabolites or proteins
