The Implementation of Mental Health Policies and Practices in Schools: An Examination of School and State Factors.

BACKGROUND: Poor mental health outcomes persist among adolescent youth. Secondary schools play a critical role in fostering positive mental health by implementing policies and practices grounded in evidence. The factors associated with implementation, however, are unclear. This study examines which school- and state-level factors are associated with improved implementation of mental health policies and practices at secondary schools across the United States. METHODS: US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data stemming from 3 datasets (School Health Policies and Practices, School Healt

A scoping review of national policies for hierarchical medical system in China since the 2009 health reform.

BACKGROUND: Universal health coverage (UHC) is driving the global health agenda. In 2009, the Chinese government launched a new round of healthcare reform toward UHC, and made remarkable progress in UHC through the establishment of a hierarchical medical system (HMS). We aim to summarize and review the evolution of China's hierarchical medical system policy. METHODS: Eligible policies were identified between March 7, 2009 and December 31, 2022, by searching the official websites of the PKULAW Database, the Chinese State Council, and related ministries. Policy screening and data extraction wer

Digital Health Technology & Cancer Care: Conceptual Framework Leading Comprehensive Fruitfulness.

Digital technologies are now integral to daily life. However, their applications for the health of populations remain largely untapped. Increasing cancer incidence, and it being the leading cause of death in every country in the world, justifies the need for increasing healthcare. Digital health technology is a promising field. Digital health means different things to different people. Thus, the need for a concrete, distinctive, comprehensive action plan. Conceptual frameworks represent ways of thinking about a problem and how complex things work. We elaborate on the latest evidence with examp

Folate and neural tube defects.

The multifactorial aetiology of neural tube defects has stimulated many theories related to dietary factors in pregnancy. The results of the Medical Research Council Study confirm that folate has a protective effect if taken in the 3 months prior to conception and for the first trimester. The dosage recommended is 5mg daily for women at risk for recurrence of spina bifida or anencephaly and 0.5mg daily for those at low risk. Dietary modification to include foods with high folate such as leafy green vegetables and wholemeal grain is not considered sufficient. Fortification of staple food items

Quality improvement in neurology: dementia management quality measures.

Professional and advocacy organizations have long urged that dementia should be recognized and properly diagnosed. With the passage of the National Alzheimer's Project Act in 2011, an Advisory Council for Alzheimer's Research, Care, and Services was convened to advise the Department of Health and Human Services. In May 2012, the Council produced the first National Plan to address Alzheimer's disease, and prominent in its recommendations is a call for quality measures suitable for evaluating and tracking dementia care in clinical settings. Although other efforts have been made to set dementia c

A conduit between epidemiological research and regional health policy.

OBJECTIVE: To transform data from a research setting into a format that could be used to support strategies encouraging healthy lifestyle choices and service planning within local government. METHODS: Details of the health status and lifestyle behaviours of the Geelong, Victoria, population were generated independently by the Geelong Osteoporosis Study (GOS), a prospective population-based cohort study. Recent GOS follow-up phases provided evidence about patterns of unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, smoking and harmful alcohol use. These factors are well-recognised modifiable risk factors

HPV-based cervical screening: Rationale, expectations and future perspectives of the new Dutch screening programme.

Based on scientific data showing that HPV testing provides better protection against cervical precancer and cancer than cytology, in 2011 the Dutch Health Council advised the Minister of Welfare, Health and Sports to replace cytology by HPV testing in the Dutch population-based screening programme. After a successful evaluation of the feasibility of HPV-based screening in 2014, primary HPV testing for cervical screening was implemented in 2017. The Netherlands has been one of the first countries worldwide to implement nationwide HPV-based screening and its experience with the new programme is

The world federation of neurology and its global engagement with the World Health Organization and the United Nations economic and social council.

The World Federation of Neurology (WFN) has increased efforts in global advocacy and promotion of neurology. These efforts formed the basis of global WFN activities between 2023 and 2025, concurring with worldwide interest in promoting brain health along with the dissemination of the World Health Organization (WHO) Intersectoral Global Action Plan on Epilepsy and Other Neurological Disorders (IGAP). To achieve these goals, the WFN leveraged the concept of advocacy, which allows promoting neurology at the macro- (global), meso- (regional), and micro-levels. Two main strategic WFN advocacy instr

Leveraging Social Media for Population Health Promotion: Evaluation of a Year-Long Nonprofit Public Health Campaign.

In an ever-evolving health communication landscape, nonprofit organizations must move beyond just maintaining a passive digital presence. Rather, they must actively engage communities to promote meaningful health outcomes. The Broward Regional Health Planning Council (BRHPC), serving Broward County, Florida, executed a year-long public health social media campaign to increase awareness of and educate the community about preventable health conditions. Among these were cardiovascular disease, oral cancer, and obesity. The campaign targeted Broward County's diverse audience of community residents

Crafting veteran to baccalaureate nursing programs.

Upon leaving the military, veteran health care personnel have difficulty finding commensurate civilian employment, yet their military transcripts document a strong record of health care education and experience. Vigorous Veterans' Bachelor of Science in Nursing (VBSN) programs can provide military personnel with opportunities to become registered nurses. This article describes the incremental planning, curriculum design, prior-learning evaluation option implementation, and student veteran results from one VBSN program with a ten-year history of successful, sustainable delivery. Infectious diseases, infection control, vaccines and long-term care: an European interdisciplinary Council on ageing consensus document.

The accelerating ageing of populations worldwide presents profound challenges for public health, particularly within long-term care facilities (LTCFs). Older adults, often burdened by multimorbidity, frailty, and immunosenescence, are highly vulnerable to vaccine-preventable diseases such as influenza, pneumococcal pneumonia, COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), pertussis, and herpes zoster (HZ). Despite the availability of effective vaccines, immunization coverage in LTCFs remains inadequate, hindered by fragmented national policies, insufficient mandates, and systemic neglect of adul

[Are there irrationalities in the consumption of anti-obesity drugs in Brazil? A pharmaco-econometric analysis of panel datasets].

The scope of this study is to analyze the determinants of the use of appetite suppressants (amfepramone, femproporex, mazindol and sibutramine) through the estimation of a dynamic panel dataset model for the Brazilian state capitals and the Federal District (DF) in the period from 2009 to 2011. The results show that consumption of appetite suppressants did not follow the geographic distribution of overweight and obese individuals across the capitals and DF. There is a recurrent consumption of appetite inhibitors, in which 79% of the current consumption of these drugs is explained by past consu

"I think there has to be a mutual respect for there to be value": Evaluating patient engagement in a national clinical trial on de-implementation of low value care.

BACKGROUND: The evaluation of patient engagement in research is understudied and under-reported, making it difficult to know what engagement strategies work best and when. We provide the results of an evaluation of patient engagement in a large Canadian research program focused on the de-implementation of low-value care. We aimed to evaluate the experience and impact of patient engagement in the study. METHODS: An online cross-sectional survey was administered using Microsoft Forms to (1) researchers and study staff and (2) patient partners. The survey was developed following iterative review

Creating integrated service systems for homeless persons with mental illness: the ACCESS Program. Access to Community Care and Effective Services and Supports.

The Access to Community Care and Effective Services and Supports (ACCESS) demonstration program was initiated in 1993 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as part of a national agenda to end homelessness among persons with serious mental illness. Demonstration projects have been established in nine states to develop integrated systems of care for this population. This paper provides an overview of the ACCESS program and presents definitions of services integration and systems integration. Evaluating the effectiveness of integration strategies is a critical aspect of the program.

The adaptation process of a safety planning intervention to promote connectedness and reduce distress in Diné adolescents and adults during the COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Indigenous connectedness is an impetus for health, well-being, self-confidence, cultural preservation, and communal thriving. When this connectedness is disrupted, the beliefs, values, and ways of life that weave Indigenous communities together is threatened. In the Spring of 2020, the COVID-19 virus crept into Tribal Nations across the United States and exacerbated significant health-related and educational inequities. The first case of COVID-19, or Dikos Ntsaaígíí-19 in the Diné (Navajo) language, arrived in the Southwest in March 2020. The virus quickly spread amongst Diné com
