Papua New Guinea (PNG) has one of the highest maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality rates in the Asia-Pacific region, with the COVID-19 pandemic exposing longstanding system weaknesses. This study examines established health system gaps affecting maternal and newborn health (MNH) outcomes in PNG, identifies those considered both high-priority and feasible to address by local stakeholders, and highlights locally driven solutions for sustainable improvements. Qualitative data were collected using card-sorting, with analysis guided by the AAAQ framework (Availability, Accessibility, Accept

Maternal and newborn health in Somalia remains a critical public health challenge within a fragile and conflict-affected health system. This review aims to examine the magnitude, determinants, and health system challenges affecting maternal and neonatal outcomes in Somalia, and to identify priority public health actions and research gaps. A narrative review methodology was employed, drawing on peer-reviewed literature from PubMed and Google Scholar, alongside grey literature including national surveys (SHDS 2020), policy documents, and reports from international organizations. Findings show th

Chronic respiratory diseases impart a huge global disease burden. Many cases of adult chronic respiratory disorders are recognised to originate early in life during critical phases of lung growth and development. We therefore reviewed the longitudinal evolution of common childhood respiratory diseases across the lifespan. We included studies relating childhood respiratory health (preterm birth, asthma, low lung function or bronchiectasis) to respiratory health in adolescents and adults, including COPD.The negative impact of preterm birth (with or without bronchopulmonary dysplasia) on future r

The Canadian Animal Health Surveillance System (CAHSS) is a collaborative network that gathers and uses surveillance data to monitor animal health, reduce disease impacts, and inform national priorities. Beef cattle practitioners, industry professionals, and veterinary epidemiologists collaborated to establish the primary animal health and welfare surveillance priorities for the beef sector over the next 5 y. A 4-step process with meetings, surveys, and a modified DISCONTOOLS rubric was used to set surveillance goals and to prioritize diseases and other issues for the Canadian beef industry. I

The most up-to-date estimate of the global burden of disease indicates that ambient air pollution, including fine particulate matter and ozone, contributes to an estimated 5.2 million deaths each year. In this review, we highlight the challenges in estimating population exposure to air pollution and attributable health risks, particularly in low- and middle-income countries and among vulnerable populations. To protect public health, the evidence so far confirms urgent needs to prioritize interdisciplinary research on air pollution exposure and risk assessment and to develop evidence-based inte

OBJECTIVES: Older patients with head and neck cancer often have comorbidity, have reduced life-expectancy and await intensive treatment. For the decision-making process, knowledge of a patient's health outcome prioritization is of paramount importance. We aim to study the health outcome priorities of older patients with head and neck cancer, and to evaluate whether general health, markers of physical, cognitive, and social functioning, and quality of life are associated with health outcome prioritization.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients aged ≥70 years with head and neck cancer received a Comp

BACKGROUND: In 2015, it was estimated that the burden of disease in Iran comprised of 19 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), 74% of which were due to non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The observed leading causes of death were cardiovascular diseases (41.9%), neoplasms (14.9%), and road traffic injuries (7.4%). Even so, the health research investment in Iran continues to remain limited. This study aims to identify national health research priorities in Iran for the next five years to assist the efficient use of resources towards achieving the long-term health targets.

The introduction of Zika virus into the Region of the Americas (Americas) and the subsequent increase in cases of congenital microcephaly resulted in activation of CDC's Emergency Operations Center on January 22, 2016, to ensure a coordinated response and timely dissemination of information, and led the World Health Organization to declare a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on February 1, 2016. During the past year, public health agencies and researchers worldwide have collaborated to protect pregnant women, inform clinicians and the public, and advance knowledge about Zika vir

Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the most persistent infectious diseases worldwide, particularly in resource-limited and densely populated regions. While community-based TB strategies are central to early detection, treatment success, and transmission interruption, their implementation often raises complex ethical and legal concerns. This paper examines the tension between public health imperatives and the protection of individual rights within community TB control programs. Determine a legal principles, human rights frameworks, and on-the-ground practice, we explore how interventions such as

Background: Antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 can be detected by various testing platforms, but a detailed understanding of assay performance is critical. Methods: We developed and validated a simple enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect IgG binding to the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of SARS-CoV-2, which was then applied for surveillance. ELISA results were compared to a set of complimentary serologic assays using a large panel of clinical research samples. Results: The RBD ELISA exhibited robust performance in ROC curve analysis (AUC> 0.99; Se = 89%, Sp = 99.3%). Antibodies were d

PURPOSE: The University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute (PHI) Model of Health, grounded in models developed over a decade ago, provides a framework for prioritizing health-related investments including setting agendas, implementing policies, and sharing resources for improving community health and health equity. The model includes multiple determinants of health and two broad health outcomes (length and quality of life). We adapted the PHI Model of Health to cancer outcomes.
METHODS: Using county-level publicly available data, health factor summary measures were derived in three area

OBJECTIVE: This paper identifies specific data items for use by state and local agencies in a maternal and child oral health needs assessment model.
METHODS: A modified Delphi approach was used to develop consensus on items for inclusion in the data set and their relative importance. Initially, 31 data items were chosen from several national sources. All state dental directors, along with other selected administrators and advisory committee members for this process, were asked to categorize each of the data items as core (essential), important but optional, or of lesser importance. BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan Africa is the region with the highest under-five mortality rate globally. Child healthcare decisions should be based on rigorously developed evidence-informed guidelines. The Global Evidence, Local Adaptation (GELA) project is enhancing capacity to use global research to develop locally relevant guidelines for newborn and child health in South Africa (SA), Malawi, and Nigeria. The first step in this process was to identify national priorities for newborn and child health guideline development, and this paper describes our approach.
METHODS: We followed a good practice
