Hong Kong nurses' health-related behaviours: implications for nurses' role in health promotion.

The health-related behaviors of a random sample (n = 92) of Hong Kong nurses were assessed by a questionnaire written either in English or in English and Chinese. Hong Kong nurses reported negligible smoking or alcohol use, low levels of breast self-examination, cervical screening behaviour and regular exercising, seat belt use and driving within the speed limit. The sample reported high levels of making efforts to avoid foods high in cholesterol, eating foods high in fibre and eating fruit daily. Dental hygiene was reported to be high. Just over half the sample reported sleeping 7-8 hours eac

[Female migrants in the health care system. Health care utilisation, access barriers and health promotion strategies].

Due to the evident interaction between social factors and health, migrants are exposed to specific risk factors and access barriers to health services. Some examples are the lower education level, the low social position and/or the insufficient language skills. This concept is further elaborated in the multi-factorial impacts of health literacy. Female migrants often experience additional discrimination because of their gender. Despite the lack of representative data, consistent studies show that female migrants do not regularly take advantage of health care prevention and present themselves w

Network Strategies in Municipal Health Promotion: A Mixed-Methods Study.

Municipal health promotion increasingly relies on intersectoral networks to address complex health challenges amid fragmented health, social and educational systems. However, little is known about how practitioners navigate these networks or how perceived strategies correspond with observed network structures. This convergent mixed-methods study involved 14 health professionals and combined qualitative interviews with egocentric network analysis. Interview data were analysed using deductive content analysis, while the quantitative component comprised descriptive network analysis based on struc

Emphasising Learning in Health Promotion Targeting Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) face disproportionately poor health profiles, underscoring the need for targeted and tailored health promotion strategies. Increasing health-related knowledge is essential for making lifestyle changes. However, difficulties associated with ID can affect the learning processes within health promotion, challenging professionals to apply various strategies to promote health. There is a lack of research exploring strategies perceived as meaningful and helpful in everyday health promotion informed by the lived experiences of individuals wi

Personalized prehabilitation: a health promotion tool to improve surgical outcomes.

Advances in the care of surgical patients emphasize the impact of social determinants of health (e.g., age, gender, income, education) on clinical outcomes and the relevance of personalized perioperative care, which can accelerate recovery and reduce complications. The importance of implementing patient-specific health promotion strategies preoperatively is discussed here, and a personalized prehabilitation paradigm that builds on perioperative practices designed to reduce complications and accelerate recovery within the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) approach is proposed. The selected

Methodology for evaluation of complex school-based health promotion interventions.

There is a need for careful examination of large volumes of collected (structured and unstructured) information related to school-based evaluation. There is also no published, comprehensive framework/s for evaluating complex interventions in Irish primary schools. The aim of this paper is to outline a methodology for process evaluation of an Irish primary school-based physical activity (PA) and nutrition intervention. Evaluation followed the three themes outlined by the British Medical Research Council: implementation, context, and mechanism of impact that we further divided into six dimension

Recommendations on the use of artificial intelligence in health promotion.

The purpose of this perspective is to provide recommendations on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in health promotion. To arrive at these recommendations, we followed a 6-step process. The first step was to recruit an international authorship team from the Healthy Living for Pandemic Event Protection (HL- PIVOT) network. This enabled us to achieve an international perspective with insights from Canada, Great Britain, Kenya, Italy, and the US. A philosophical inquiry was conducted addressing 5 questions. What should the relationship be between humans and AI in health promotion? How can t

Health Promotion and Hydration: A Systematic Review About Hydration Care.

AIM: Hydration and well-being are highly correlated. However, practice tells us that the significance of hydration is often unrecognized and is not treated as a priority. This review focuses on how health education can improve hydration levels among the adult population. METHOD: The research question of the study is "Can health promotion improve hydration among adults?" A total of 934 papers were screened using search engines such as CINAHL, COCHRANE, PUBMED, EMBASE, and Google Scholar. Seventy-two articles were assessed for eligibility and 41 of them were selected for quality appraisal using

Prevention and Treatment of Tobacco Use: JACC Health Promotion Series.

Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death worldwide and is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Both prevention of smoking initiation among youth and smoking cessation among established smokers are key for reducing smoking prevalence and the associated negative health consequences. Proven tobacco cessation treatment includes pharmacotherapy and behavioral support, which are most effective when provided together. First-line medications (varenicline, bupropion, and nicotine replacement) are effective and safe for patients with CVD. Clinicians who care for patients wi

Occupational Therapists' Role in Perinatal Care: A Health Promotion Approach.

This article establishes and examines occupational therapists' role in perinatal care and proposes a health promotion approach for new and expectant mothers. The author demonstrates the importance of maintaining meaningful occupational engagement during this critical life stage by incorporating evidence from orthopedic, rehabilitation, and hand therapy research. New and expectant mothers are at high risk for upper extremity (UE) conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, De Quervain's tenosynovitis, and tendinosis of the UE. Occupational therapists with basic knowledge of hand therapy are well

Enjoying a healthy pregnancy: GPs' essential role in health promotion.

BACKGROUND: For many women, a major pregnancy goal is to achieve an enjoyable, healthy pregnancy. The continuum of care from preconception counselling, management of early pregnancy, referral or continued pregnancy care and management into the postpartum period places general practitioners (GPs) in a unique position to meaningfully contribute on many levels to this realisation. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to explore the determinants of a healthy and enjoyable pregnancy, and asks how GPs can facilitate an optimum experience for women in pregnancy, regardless of risk. DISCUSSION: GPs

Viewing loved faces inhibits defense reactions: a health-promotion mechanism?

We have known for decades that social support is associated with positive health outcomes. And yet, the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying this association remain poorly understood. The link between social support and positive health outcomes is likely to depend on the neurophysiological regulatory mechanisms underlying reward and defensive reactions. The present study examines the hypothesis that emotional social support (love) provides safety cues that activate the appetitive reward system and simultaneously inhibit defense reactions. Using the startle probe paradigm, 54 undergraduate

The case for more active policy attention to health promotion.

Until recently, when anthrax triggered a concern about preparedness in the public health infrastructure, U.S. health policy and health spending had been dominated by a focus on payment for medical treatment. The fact that many of the conditions driving the need for treatment are preventable ought to draw attention to policy opportunities for promoting health. Following a brief review of the determinants of population health-genetic predispositions, social circumstances, environmental conditions, behavioral patterns, and medical care-this paper explores some of the factors inhibiting policy att

Distressed or De-stressed? Crafting "Mental Health" in University Peer Education and Health Promotion.

In recent years, universities have demonstrated heightened recognition of and concern for students' mental health by expanding mental health services as well as campus-wide mental health promotion campaigns. This article examines peer education -- a growing initiative on American campuses in which students work with their institution to create and deliver health education and awareness campaigns to their peers. I present findings from an ethnographic study including 30 interviews with student peer health educators and their supervisory staff, participant observation among three university prog

Social media for students' sleep health promotion - a health intervention report during COVID -19.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected sleep health. Students' sleep health is essential for the performance of neuro-cognitive processes, as well as mental and physical balance. We assume the COVID19 pandemic has modified some sleep habits by prompting environmental and social interaction changes. In this study we surveyed a sample of 300 Brazilian students, with internet access, resident in the Federal District. They completed a questionnaire over two weeks in March 2020, i.e. the second and third week of the social isolation policy enacted in the Federal District due to COVID19. Valid responses
