Social interaction anxiety and personality traits predicting engagement in health risk sexual behaviors.

Individuals with social interaction anxiety, a facet of social anxiety disorder, withdraw from or avoid social encounters and generally avoid risks. However, a subset engages in health risk sexual behavior (HRSB). Because sensation seeking, emotion dysregulation, and impulsivity predict engagement in HRSB among adolescents and young adults, the present study hypothesized that latent classes of social interaction anxiety and these personality traits would differentially predict likelihood of engagement in HRSB. Finite mixture modeling was used to discern four classes: two low social interaction

Effect of transition home from combat on risk-taking and health-related behaviors.

Transition home following a combat deployment involves a period of adjustment. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of a new 16-item transition scale were conducted with 2 samples and resulted in 4 factors (Benefit, Appreciation, Anger/Alienation, and Guilt/Remorse). In Study 1 (N = 1,651), the number of combat events was positively related to Anger/Alienation 4 months later even after controlling for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, partial r = .18, p < .001. In Study 2 (N = 647), after controlling for PTSD symptoms, Anger/Alienation assessed at 4 months postdeployment p

Healthy choices: motivational enhancement therapy for health risk behaviors in HIV-positive youth.

This study piloted a brief individual motivational intervention targeting multiple health risk behaviors in HIV-positive youth aged 16-25. Interviews about sexual behavior and substance use and viral load testing were obtained from 51 HIV-positive youth at baseline and post intervention. Youth were randomized to receive a four-session motivational enhancement intervention (N = 25) or to a wait-list control (N = 26). Of the eligible youth approached, 88% agreed to participate, and 80% percent of participants completed at least three of four sessions. The treatment group showed significantly gre

Attempted suicide and associated health risk behaviors among Native American high school students.

Suicide represents the second-leading cause of death among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) youth aged 15-24 years. Data from the 2001 Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Youth Risk Behavior Survey were used to examine the association between attempted suicide among high school students and unintentional injury and violence behaviors, sexual risk behaviors, tobacco use, and alcohol and other drug use. The study included students in BIA-funded high schools with 10 or more students enrolled in grades 9-12. Overall, 16% of BIA high school students attempted suicide one or more times in the 12 mon

Smartphone-Measured Sleep Health Risk Factors Detect Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors Among Adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Suicide deaths and poor sleep health in adolescents have significantly increased. Smartphone sensors (eg, accelerometry) provide an unobtrusive and scalable way to monitor sleep health over extended time periods. We hypothesized that poor weekly sleep health (ie, shorter and variable time in bed; late and variable bedtime) assessed through smartphone sensors would associate with weekly suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB). METHOD: High-risk adolescents (N = 145, 13-18 years of age, 112 female) oversampled for STB (n = 114) installed the Effortless Assessment Research System applic

Health risk behaviors in relation to making a smoking quit attempt among adolescents.

The primary aim of this study was to examine youth risk behaviors in relation to: (a) making a smoking quit attempt, and (b) successful cessation among adolescent smokers. Data were analyzed from the public use dataset of the 2003 national school-based Youth Risk Behavior Survey. The sample consisted of 2,033 students (weighted mean age of 16.3 years, 49.8% female, 73.6% White) who reported a history of daily smoking. While almost two-thirds (63.5%) of adolescent smokers reported making a quit attempt in the last year, only 10% of those were able to successfully quit. Factors associated with m

Risk reduction and health promotion behaviors following genetic testing for adult-onset disorders.

Although clinical genetic testing is available for over 1,000 inherited disorders, consequences of predictive genetic testing have been most extensively examined for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC), hereditary colon cancer, and Huntington disease (HD). These focus primarily on psychological, ethical, legal, and social aspects of genetic testing. Genetic testing may also provide information that can lead to behaviors that promote health and reduce risk for disease, reflecting options available for the disorder for which the person is at risk. However, regardless of condition, people

Gambling and health risk-taking behavior in a military sample.

This study examined the gambling of a cohort of U.S. Air Force recruits (N = 31,104) and the relationship between their gambling and health-risk behaviors. Participants provided self-report data regarding gambling and health-related behaviors. Results suggest that 10.4% of participants gambled weekly or more often, 6.2% reported gambling problems, and 1.9% acknowledged loss of control over gambling. Men were more likely than women to report weekly gambling and possible problematic gambling. Minorities, compared to Caucasians, were more likely to experience gambling problems and report loss of

Violence exposure and depression in Chinese adolescents: Mediation by health-risk behaviors and alleviation by family health.

As the social environment evolves, adolescents face increasing exposure to violence and psychological stress. Adolescent violence is a global public health issue that not only severely impacts their mental health but also profoundly affects their long-term well-being. Fewer studies have explored the mediating role of health-risk behaviors in the association between violence and depressive symptoms among adolescents, particularly the moderating effect of family health. Using cross-sectional data from the 2021 Psychological and Behavioral Investigation of Chinese Residents (PBICR) involving 1065

Dosage in Implementation of an Effective School-Based Health Program Impacts Youth Health Risk Behaviors and Experiences.

PURPOSE: This study is part of a larger evaluation of a multilevel, multistrategy federal program to reduce high school students' risk for HIV/sexually transmitted infection and unintended pregnancy. Local education agencies supported schools in implementing three strategies: delivering exemplary sexual health education, increasing student access to quality sexual health services, and enhancing safe and supportive school environments (SSE). We examined how levels of school implementation of these strategies moderated program effects on targeted student outcomes. METHODS: The Youth Risk Behavi

Concussion and Risk of Chronic Medical and Behavioral Health Comorbidities.

While chronic neurological effects from concussion have been studied widely, little is known about possible links between concussion and long-term medical and behavioral comorbidities. We performed a retrospective cohort study of 9205 adult patients with concussion, matched to non-concussion controls from a hospital-based electronic medical registry. Patients with comorbidities before the index visit were excluded. Behavioral and medical comorbidities were defined by International Classification of Diseases, Ninth and Tenth Revision codes. Groups were followed for up to 10 years to identify co

Prevalence and co-occurrence of health risk behaviors among high-risk drinkers in a primary care population.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 10% of patients seen in the primary care setting meet criteria for high-risk (HR) drinking. Little data are available about the co-occurrence of other risk behaviors (RBs) in this population. This study examines the co-occurrence of smoking, poor diet, and sedentariness, and several change-related variables, among 479 HR drinkers participating in Project Health, a NIAAA-funded study testing the effectiveness of a provider-delivered intervention to reduce HR drinking. METHOD: Data were collected at study entry via standardized interview and questionnaire. RESULTS: Th
