Purpose Given that prisoners have significant health needs across most areas, the paucity of prisoner health research, and the difficulties involved in the conduct of research in this setting, there is a need to develop research priorities that align with key stakeholder groups. One such group are those responsible for health service provision in prisons - prison health service directors. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach Prison health service directors in each Australian state and territory were invited to participate in a national (deliberative) roundtable w

BACKGROUND: Despite the growing interest in understanding the psycho-social impact of rare genetic diseases, few studies examine this concept and even fewer seek to obtain feedback from families who have lived the experience. The aim of this project was to involve families of children living with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) in the development of a tool to assess the impact of OI on the lives of patients and their families.
METHODS: This project used an integrated knowledge translation approach in which knowledge users (clinicians and people living with OI and their families) were consulted t

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: In clinical trials, tapentadol prolonged release (PR) showed a more favourable gastrointestinal tolerability profile compared to other strong opioids in the treatment of pain. The present analysis compared tapentadol PR and classical WHO-III PR opioids in routine clinical practice.
METHOD: Retrospective cohort study (matched pair approach) using anonymised health insurance data of patients with chronic low back pain who were prescribed strong opioids following pretreatment with WHO-I/II analgesics. Data were analysed from the date of first prescription in 2015 over a max

The Institute of Medicine's vision for health professions education specifies working together across professions and schools to provide patient-centered care. Improvement in collaborative preparation of health professionals is seen as central to achieving substantial improvement in the quality of health care. In this article, the authors address one central question: How can medical schools work with other health-sciences schools to promote their educational, research, and service missions? The authors summarize the history of the University of Washington (UW) Health Sciences Center in promot

Oral health is a vital aspect of overall health and wellbeing, yet individuals experiencing homelessness often bear a disproportionate burden of poor oral health and its consequences. This paper explores how community engagement and equity-oriented research can be powerful and complementary tools to inform and enhance evidence-based service design for these patients. We present illustrative examples from both the United Kingdom and international contexts. Community engagement captures a genuine, patient-centred understanding of current realities, while research builds on this foundation to ide

BACKGROUND: Health services research often relies on secondary data, necessitating quality checks for completeness, validity, and potential errors before use. Various methods address implausible data, including data elimination, statistical estimation, or value substitution from the same or another dataset. This study presents an internal validation process of a secondary dataset used to investigate hospital compliance with minimum caseload requirements (MCR) in Germany. The secondary data source validated is the German Hospital Quality Reports (GHQR), an official dataset containing structured

OBJECTIVE: Although chronic non-bacterial osteitis (CNO) is an ever-increasingly recognised illness in the paediatric community and the adult healthcare community, a study to assess diagnosing, treatment and the psychosocial aspect of CNO from a large population pool was not available. We aimed to investigate CNO from the patient perspective.
DESIGN: Health services research, patient survey.
SETTING: Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) Pediatric Rheumatology Department CNO Conferences held in June 2013 and June 2015.
PARTICIPANTS: Using a patient survey developed by the LMU Pediatric Rheuma

Indigenous peoples of Aotearoa New Zealand, Māori, are often excluded and underserved by hearing health services that often neglect their cultural values and needs. In response to this, we aimed to advance the delivery of culturally appropriate services with Māori clients through the validation of a te reo Māori hearing screening test. A He Awa Whiria: Braided rivers framework was applied to weave Māori knowledge and cultural values into this audiological research and to support the collaboration of Māori and non-Māori researchers through a Kaupapa Māori approach stream. INTRODUCTION: Expanding access to postpartum intrauterine contraception (PPIUC) can reduce unintended pregnancies and short inter-pregnancy intervals; however, provision across Europe is limited. Our aim was to determine the feasibility, clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction of providing immediate PPIUC after vaginal birth using a health services research model.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Phased introduction of PPIUC across two Lothian maternity hospitals; all women intending vaginal birth during the study period without a contraindication to use of the method were eligible to receive PPIUC.

Although documentation that war inflicts psychological casualties dates back to the American Civil War and earlier, most research began after the Vietnam conflict, when studies focused on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). With ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, there has been significant research to illuminate the epidemiology of war-related psychological casualties. Significant findings include an appreciation for the role combat plays in the development of mental disorders, including PTSD and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Recent research has endeavoured to understand and improve

Climate change poses a significant threat to mental health, potentially increasing the rates of mental health adversities and disorders. Therefore, mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, play a crucial role in addressing and mitigating these consequences. The Philippines, as a highly climate-vulnerable nation, serves as an exemplary case highlighting the roles these professionals can undertake in the climate change response, including providing services, engaging in education and training, promoting mental well-being, and conducting surveillance and research, such as studies exp

The development of WHO's DOTS strategy for the control of tuberculosis (TB) in 1995 led to the expansion, adaptation and improvement of operational research in this area. From being a patchwork of small-scale studies concerned with aspects of service delivery, TB operational research shifted to larger-scale, often multicountry projects that were also concerned with health policy and the needs of health systems. The results are now being put into practice by national TB control programmes. In 1998 an ad hoc committee identified the chief factors inhibiting the expansion of DOTS: lack of politic

BACKGROUND: Family caregivers are integral to the care of patients and possess important perspectives regarding improving healthcare delivery. Yet, caregivers are seldom engaged in research in part because of challenges recruiting and retaining them. We sought to identify best practices for recruiting and retaining caregivers in health services research, drawing from researcher experiences in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
METHODS: We identified VA Health Systems Research (HSR) funded studies that focused on caregivers of Veterans by reviewing ongoing and completed projects from 201

This commentary discusses best practices for responding to fentanyl-related overdose deaths in adolescents and young adults, and it outlines the current state of knowledge about them. Various types of approaches to fentanyl-related overdoses in this age group may need to be developed based on the different risk factors that are emerging from the existing data. We describe the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) behavioral health services research priorities connected with fentanyl-related overdoses in youth. We highlight a key target for intervention and discuss research opportunities rela

BACKGROUND: Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) literacy allows young adults to make informed decisions about health outcomes. In Peru, roughly one fifth of the population lives in rural areas, and little is known about where young adults in rural areas get their SRH information. The aim of this study was to identify what motivates and influences young adults to seek information and care related to SRH in three rural communities in the highlands of Northern Peru.
METHODS: Five gender-stratified focus group discussions with a total of 24 participants, and nine follow-up interviews were conduc
