INTRODUCTION: Reducing health inequalities is a priority in public and global health. Intersectionality is a powerful tool for analyzing complex inequalities. Unfortunately, its use remains limited in Francophone contexts, where it is often confined to abstract theoretical considerations, thereby constraining its transformative potential.
METHOD: This narrative review, guided by the SANRA criteria, was conducted between February and August 2025 using Google Scholar, PubMed, and Cairn to identify foundational texts, case studies, and practical resources addressing the application of intersecti

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this article is to describe the known health disparities that exist among patients with sarcoidosis by socioeconomic status, race, and gender, review potential contributors to health disparities in sarcoidosis, investigate the intersectionality among socioeconomic status, race, and gender in sarcoidosis, and outline a research agenda to address these disparities.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies have reported the significant financial strain a diagnosis of sarcoidosis has on individuals and the disproportionate affect the strain has on low socioeconomic status ind

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Structural racism is increasingly recognized as a fundamental driver of racial and ethnic health disparities, yet it remains insufficiently addressed in research. This review examines persistent disparities in urologic outcomes across malignant and benign conditions and highlights the role of upstream inequities and policies that shape care.
RECENT FINDINGS: The literature links structural racism to inequities across several domains, including screening policy and guideline implementation, referral patterns, subspecialty access, insurance design, and neighborhood-level fact

Glaucoma is an ophthalmic disorder that affects a significant number of Blacks globally. A leading cause of this condition is an age-related enlargement of the lens and increased intraocular pressure. Although Blacks are affected by glaucoma at a higher rate than their Caucasian counterparts, there remains a lack of emphasis placed on the detection, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of glaucoma in this population. Education regarding glaucoma in the African and African American populations is essential to reducing rates of glaucoma-related visual impairment and improving treatment success.

Periodontal diseases, a group of complex conditions marked by an excessive immune response and periodontal tissue destruction, are a global health concern. Since 1990, the incidence of these diseases has doubled, with Western sub-Saharan Africa experiencing the highest burden. Accurate diagnosis and case identification are crucial for understanding the etiology, features of disease, research, treatment and prevention. Modern perspectives on periodontal disease classification are based on commonality among those affected. However, current literature is often plagued by methodological inconsiste

Underserved minorities make up a disproportionately small subset of patients in the United States undergoing transcatheter and surgical aortic valve replacement for aortic stenosis. The reasons for these treatment gaps include differences in disease prevalence and patient, health care system, and disease-related factors. This has major implications not only for minority patients, but also for other groups who face similar challenges in accessing state-of-the-art care for structural heart disease. The authors propose the following key strategies to address these treatment disparities: 1) implem

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty/steatotic liver disease (MAFLD/MASLD) affects over 1 billion people globally, yet its relationship with health inequity remains poorly defined. This study aimed to clarify the impact of socioeconomic factors and food insecurity on MAFLD/MASLD prevalence and outcomes using the diverse Arab region as a model.
METHODS: Data for 22 Arab countries were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease 2021 and FAOSTAT datasets. We analyzed correlations between MAFLD/MASLD metrics (prevalence, mortality, DALYs) and indices of socioeconomic develop

As global aging accelerates alongside intensifying climate disruptions, older adults face growing exposure to extreme weather events that threaten their health and well-being. Yet, the experiences of racialized older adults, categorized as those who are non-White or non-Indigenous who often inhabit the intersection of social and ecological shaped by social marginalization, economic disadvantage, and other factors remain insufficiently understood. Guided by an Intersectional Climate Justice lens, this scoping review examined how racialized older adults across diverse contexts experience and res

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated mental and oral health outcomes among left-behind children (LBC) affected by urbanization-driven rural-urban labour migration. Although mental health impacts of parental migration are increasingly recognized, oral health outcomes remain underexplored. This review synthesizes available evidence, quantifies disparities, and identifies shared social and structural determinants.
RECENT FINDINGS: Thirty-three studies met inclusion criteria. Pooled analyses revealed significantly higher depressive symptoms among LBC compared to n

Approximately 480 million individuals worldwide (~6% of the global population) are Indigenous peoples. Despite their diverse cultures and histories, the shared legacy of colonialism has profoundly shaped their health and socioeconomic status. This legacy is deeply intertwined with poverty, systemic racism and historical trauma, contributing to significant health disparities compared with non-Indigenous populations. Among the many chronic diseases disproportionately affecting Indigenous peoples, chronic kidney disease (CKD) stands out as a major public health concern. Indigenous peoples experie

OBJECTIVES: This scoping review aimed to map global evidence on upstream interventions which promote oral health and reduce socioeconomic inequalities in oral health.
METHODS: A review was undertaken in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology for scoping reviews and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) checklist. A multistranded comprehensive search strategy was employed to identify relevant studies. Article texts were retrieved and assessed for eligibility against the inclusion criteria. Key fi

This paper is the third in a series of narrative reviews challenging core concepts in oral health research and practice. Our series started with a framework for Inclusion Oral Health. Our second review explored one component of this framework, looking at how intersectionality adds important complexity to oral public health. This current manuscript drills into a second component of Inclusion Oral Health, exploring how labels can lead to 'othering' thereby misrepresenting populations and (re)producing harms. Specifically, we address a common oral public health label: vulnerable populations. This

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing global health burden, with significant disparities in incidence, progression, and outcomes across regions-especially in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. This review explores regional perspectives of CKD inequities, going beyond socioeconomic determinants to examine the roles of genetics, environmental exposures, health infrastructure, and cultural factors. In high-income countries, disparities often stem from unequal access to advanced diagnostics and therapies. In low- and middle-income countries, challenges include limited health care resources, poor

Inclusive design has evolved as a design approach and a research topic in the last three decades. Despite its evolution, there are new frontiers to consider in the context of two phenomena: global ageing populations and the digital transition of services, particularly healthcare. This state-of-science paper presents challenges to be considered when taking an intersectional perspective and its impact on the development of digital health intervention (DHI). We present evidence highlighting how health inequalities can impact digital skills, affecting the use of DHI and potentially exacerbating ex

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Significant inequities persist in hypertension detection and control, with minoritized populations disproportionately experiencing organ damage and premature death due to uncontrolled hypertension. Remote blood pressure monitoring combined with telehealth visits (RBPM) is proving to be an effective strategy for controlling hypertension. Yet there are challenges related to technology adoption, patient engagement and social determinants of health (SDoH), contributing to disparities in patient outcomes. This review summarizes the evidence to date for RBPM, focusing on the poten

This Special Issue (SI) of Preventive Medicine is the 12th in an annual series on behavior change, health, and health disparities. The theme of this 2025 issue is Intersections of Tobacco Use with Other Addictions, Chronic Disease, and Health Disparities. Considerable attention is given to cigarette smoking as it remains the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., causing approximately 450,000 deaths annually in the U.S. and more than 7 million globally. This SI includes thirteen peer-reviewed articles that were invited from speakers at the 2024 annual conference of the Vermont Center

Persistent inequities in severe maternal morbidity (SMM) and maternal mortality in the United States have received national attention over the past decade. This scoping review aimed to outline evidence-based interventions to decrease these inequities. We adapted a socioecologic framework of SMM and maternal mortality to integrate three equity approaches: 1) interventions across subpopulations, 2) analytic strategies, such as subanalyses or reporting outcomes among priority groups, and 3) assessing risk factors unique to priority groups. We conducted a structured search of peer-reviewed medical

AI is increasingly embedded in the institutions and environments that shape health. Yet current frameworks for understanding its implications for health equity remain underdeveloped. The social determinants of health tradition provides a strong foundation, and recent work on digital determinants of health has begun to address the health implications of digital transformation. However, AI warrants distinct conceptual attention because of its triple role: it operates simultaneously as a determinant of health in its own right, as a mediator and moderator of existing determinants, and as an amplif

In the past decades, Italian hygienic requirements for dwellings have been modified by multiple derogations. Aim of the present work is to analyse the derogations introduced at a national, regional, and local level. The most important derogations were related to the habitable use of semi-basements and garrets, and building restoration. The paper also describes the regulations regarding indemnity for infringement of building abuses. The authors underline the need for more uniformity and clarity in the determination of health standards of dwellings, as well as for a simplification of the existin
