The only treatment for celiac disease (CD) is a strict and lifelong gluten-free diet (GFD), which must be safe and nutritionally balanced. Avoiding gluten brings difficulties with following the diet and can affect the social life of people with CD. The Zeliakide Project is a nutrition education program aimed at increasing the knowledge of the general population about healthy diets, CD and GFD, and, therefore, to improve the social inclusion and quality of life of people with CD. It is a one-month intervention program, two-armed cluster, non-randomised and controlled trial, conducted among 10-1

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Exercise participation and adherence in older people is often low. The integration of technology-based exercise programs may have a positive effect on adherence as they can overcome perceived barriers to exercise. Previous systematic reviews have shown preliminary evidence that technology-based exercise programs can improve physical functioning. However, there is currently no in-depth description and discussion of the potential this technology offers to improve exercise adherence in older people. This review examines the literature regarding older adults' acceptability

Physical activity and exercise are effective approaches in prevention and therapy of multiple diseases. Although the specific characteristics of lengthening contractions have the potential to be beneficial in many clinical conditions, eccentric training is not commonly used in clinical populations with metabolic, orthopaedic, or neurologic conditions. The purpose of this pilot study is to investigate the feasibility, functional benefits, and systemic responses of an eccentric exercise program focused on the trunk and lower extremities in people with low back pain (LBP) and multiple sclerosis (

BACKGROUND: In January 2000, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released new national health goals and objectives in a report entitled Healthy People 2010. This national report includes specific objectives for improving the vision of people in the United States during the 2000-2010 decade through prevention, early detection, treatment, and rehabilitation. The vision objectives, along with other health objectives, are designed to help the nation achieve two major outcomes: (1) increase the quality and years of healthy life and (2) eliminate health disparities among different group

BACKGROUND: People with low income are disproportionately affected by type 2 diabetes (T2D), and 17.6% of US adults with T2D experience food insecurity and low diet quality. Low-carbohydrate eating plans can improve glycemic control, promote weight loss, and are associated with improved cardiometabolic health and all-cause mortality. Little is known about supporting low-carbohydrate eating for people with T2D, although food-as-medicine interventions paired with nutrition education offer a promising solution.
OBJECTIVE: This program aims to support the initiation of dietary changes by using gr

In an epidemiological investigation of trench fever in Japan, we compared the seroprevalence of Bartonella quintana in homeless people and in the general population. In homeless rescue outreach programs held in Tokyo from May 2001 to March 2003, 151 blood samples were taken from non-hospitalized homeless people. The prevalence of IgM and IgG antibodies against B. quintana in these people was compared with that in 200 healthy blood donors using a commercially available indirect fluorescent antibody test. Although IgG titers of > or = 1:128 were found in 57% (86/151) of homeless people and 51% (

HIV prevention programs targeted to people living with HIV/AIDS are the US national HIV prevention priority. Healthy Relationships is a nationally disseminated HIV prevention program for HIV positive adults. Key characteristics of the intervention package include gender separated groups facilitated by a mental health professional and a HIV positive peer counselor, both of which cause considerable barriers to implementation. We examined an alteration of the original Healthy Relationships intervention (HR-O) that delivered the intervention to mixed gender groups by non-mental health and non-HIV

This first paper of the Lancet Series on ending preventable stillbirths reviews progress in essential areas, identified in the 2011 call to action for stillbirth prevention, to inform the integrated post-2015 agenda for maternal and newborn health. Worldwide attention to babies who die in stillbirth is rapidly increasing, from integration within the new Global Strategy for Women's, Children's and Adolescents' Health, to country policies inspired by the Every Newborn Action Plan. Supportive new guidance and metrics including stillbirth as a core health indicator and measure of quality of care a

BACKGROUND: Timely reliable data on aid flows to maternal, newborn, and child health are essential for assessing the adequacy of current levels of funding, and to promote accountability among donors for attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for child and maternal health. We provide global estimates of official development assistance (ODA) to maternal, newborn, and child health in 2003 and 2004, drawing on data reported by high-income donor countries and aid agencies to the Organisation for Economic Development and Cooperation.
METHODS: ODA was tracked on a project-by-project b

Healthy People 2020 lists Bisphenol A (BPA) as a potential endocrine disruptor for which exposure should be reduced. The Healthy People 2020 Environmental Health Objectives focus on addressing environmental factors that negatively affect individuals' health even though the health effects of some toxic substances are not yet fully understood. An American Association of Occupational Health Nurses (AAOHN) position statement outlined the role occupational health nurses play in creating healthy and productive workplaces by promoting worker health. BPA is implicated in a variety of health outcomes s

The aim of this study was to explore differences in trunk muscle activity on a stable and mobile seat for people after stroke and healthy participants. Trunk control exercises are known to have a beneficial effect on trunk control, balance, and mobility after stroke. The effect of such exercises could be enhanced by the use of a mobile seat to provide further training stimuli. However, little research on the musculoskeletal effects of trunk training on mobile seats has been carried out. On a stable and a mobile seat, thirteen people after stroke and fifteen healthy participants performed two s

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among Alaska Native (AN) people, and the second leading cause of cancer death. The incidence rate for the combined years 1999 through 2003 was 30% higher than the rate among U.S. whites (USWs) for the same period. Current incidence rates may serve to monitor the impact of screening programs in reducing CRC in the AN population.
METHODS: Incidence data are from the Alaska Native Tumor Registry and the National Cancer Institute Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program. We compared AN CRC incidence, sur

BACKGROUND: People with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) often experience mental health symptoms that exacerbate illness and increase mortality risk. Access to psychological support is low in people with T2DM. Detection of depression is variable in primary care and can be further hampered by mental health stigma. Electronic mental health (eMH) programs may provide an accessible, private, nonstigmatizing mental health solution for this group.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy over 12 months of follow-up of an eMH program (myCompass) for improving social and occupational functi

OBJECTIVE: Blood flow restriction (BFR) training, in which an inflatable cuff partially occludes blood flow around the proximal portion of a limb, coupled with low-intensity resistance training (LIRT) has resulted in gains comparable with traditional progressive resistive exercise in healthy populations. The use of BFR with LIRT may enable people with multiple sclerosis (MS) to improve strength without an increase in fatigue. The purpose of this case report is to describe the use of a BFR/LIRT program for a person with MS.
METHODS: The patient was a 54-year-old woman with a 13-year history of

Students with disabilities face challenges that limit their participation in sports activities designed to promote social cohesion. This study examined factors that discourage students with disabilities from engaging in sports at rural universities in Limpopo Province. A qualitative research approach with an exploratory design was employed. Purposive sampling was used to select participants. Trustworthiness was ensured through measures of credibility, confirmability, transferability, and dependability. Credibility was established through prolonged engagement with participants during the data c

INTRODUCTION: In the United States, tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death and disease. The health and cost consequences of tobacco dependence have made treatment and prevention of tobacco use a key priority among multiple stakeholders, including health plans, insurers, providers, employers, and policymakers. In 2002, the third survey of tobacco control practices and policies in health plans was conducted by America's Health Insurance Plans' technical assistance office as part of the Addressing Tobacco in Managed Care (ATMC) program.
METHODS: The ATMC survey was conducted in th

BACKGROUND: Eating a whole-food, plant-predominant diet reduces chronic systemic inflammation, which can improve pain in people with chronic musculoskeletal conditions. However, 85% of people have dietary perceptions that do not accurately reflect their actual dietary quality.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether patients' dietary perceptions align with dietary quality, assess correlations between dietary perception and lifestyle metrics, and evaluate how dietary perceptions relate to outcomes following Lifestyle Medicine (LSM) program completion.
DESIGN: Retrospective review of repository data.

BACKGROUND: Although obesity among immigrants remains an important area of study given the increasing migrant population in Australia and other developed countries, research on factors amenable to intervention is sparse. The aim of the study was to develop a culturally-competent obesity prevention program for sub-Saharan African (SSA) families with children aged 12-17 years using a community-partnered participatory approach.
METHODS: A community-partnered participatory approach that allowed the intervention to be developed in collaborative partnership with communities was used. Three pilot st
