Trajectory of hearing loss in children with unilateral hearing loss.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to quantify the amount of deterioration in hearing and to document the trajectory of hearing loss in early identified children with unilateral hearing loss (UHL). We also examined whether clinical characteristics were associated with the likelihood of having progressive hearing loss. METHODS: As part of the Mild and Unilateral Hearing Loss Study, we followed a population-based cohort of 177 children diagnosed with UHL from 2003 to 2018. We applied linear mixed models to examine hearing trends over time including the average amount of change in hearing.

Emotions in Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing and Typically Hearing Children.

For deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children living in an environment where their access to linguistic input and social interactions is compromised, learning emotions could be difficult, which may further affect social functioning. To understand the role of emotion in DHH children's social life, this study investigated emotional functioning (i.e., emotion recognition, empathy, emotion expression), and its relation with social functioning (i.e., social competence and externalizing behaviors), in 55 DHH children and 74 children with typical hearing (aged 3-10 years; Mage = 6.04). Understanding Hearing and Hearing Loss in Children With Down Syndrome.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the prevalence of permanent and transient hearing loss, the use of hearing aids as a recommendation, and middle ear dysfunction in children with Down syndrome (DS) through a large multiage and ethnically diverse sample, using current audiologic testing practices. METHOD: Retrospective analysis of data collected on 308 children with DS (168 boys, 140 girls; average age = 5.99 ± 4.88 years) who received an audiological evaluation during 2013 as part of their medical care at a large pediatric hospital. RESULTS: Permanent hearing loss was identified in 24.9% of the

Hearing in noise test in subjects with conductive hearing loss.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: It has been reported that patients with pure conductive hearing loss (CHL) have remarked that their hearing is better in the presence of background noise. This study investigated the ability for speech discrimination under background noise in adult subjects with CHL, using the Mandarin Hearing in Noise Test (M-HINT). METHODS: Seventeen subjects with unilateral CHL and 15 with bilateral CHL participated in this study. Twenty normal-hearing subjects served as controls. During the M-HINT, the sentences and noise were presented in a soundproof chamber. Reception threshold for

Hear ye? Hear ye! Successful auditory aging.

Age-related hearing loss (presbycusis) is a multifactorial process that affects nearly all people in their senior years. Most cases are due to a loss of cochlear hair cell function and are well mediated by communication courtesy and modern amplification technology. Severe hearing loss is generally due to cochlear problems or age-related diseases and may require speech reading, assistive listening devices, and cochlear implants, depending on the degree of loss. Presbycusis may seriously impair communication and contribute to isolation, depression, and possibly dementia. Accurate diagnosis and p

[Listening to music in hearing loss with and without a hearing aid].

By means of a questionnaire it was investigated how in individuals who had previously had normal hearing deafness influences their pleasure and habits in listening to music, and which role a hearing aid can play in this respect. Out of 330 questionnaires returned, 206 could be statistically evaluated. 95% reported that formerly they had liked music, light music coming from the radio being the most frequently mentioned type of music and medium. 36% had formerly played an instrument or had enjoyed singing. 79% feel that their deafness has affected their pleasure in listening to music. Most commo

The effect of type of hearing loss on hearing aid use.

This study examined the effect of type of loss and reduced PB discrimination on hours of daily hearing aid wear. Patient data were entered in one of four matrices designed to permit examination of one variable while balancing the effects of other variables. When the influences of amount of hearing loss, age, hearing aid experience, and employment status were balanced, no evidence was found that type or shape of loss influenced the number of hours of daily hearing aid use. When the data for each type/shape of loss were pooled without regard to amount of loss, age, aid experience, and employment

The hearing function of sound engineers: A hearing conservation perspective.

BACKGROUND: Occupational activities performed by sound engineers are associated with hearing loss. However, there is a dearth of research on the hearing functions and the related hearing loss for sound engineers. OBJECTIVES: To determine the hearing function and early effects of noise on the hearing ability of sound engineers, and to establish whether there are hearing conservation programmes (HCPs) available for sound engineer participants in Johannesburg. METHODS: A quantitative cross-sectional design was used. Eight sound engineers from the Academy of Sound Engineering (ASE) participated

A review of the effects of unilateral hearing loss on spatial hearing.

The capacity of the auditory system to extract spatial information relies principally on the detection and interpretation of binaural cues, i.e., differences in the time of arrival or level of the sound between the two ears. In this review, we consider the effects of unilateral or asymmetric hearing loss on spatial hearing, with a focus on the adaptive changes in the brain that may help to compensate for an imbalance in input between the ears. Unilateral hearing loss during development weakens the brain's representation of the deprived ear, and this may outlast the restoration of function in t

Early Hearing Detection and Vocabulary of Children With Hearing Loss.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To date, no studies have examined vocabulary outcomes of children meeting all 3 components of the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) guidelines (hearing screening by 1 month, diagnosis of hearing loss by 3 months, and intervention by 6 months of age). The primary purpose of the current study was to examine the impact of the current EHDI 1-3-6 policy on vocabulary outcomes across a wide geographic area. A secondary goal was to confirm the impact of other demographic variables previously reported to be related to language outcomes. METHODS: This was a cro

Additivity of masking in normally hearing and hearing-impaired subjects.

The effects of combining two equally effective maskers were studied in normally hearing and elderly hearing-impaired subjects. The additivity of nonsimultaneous masking was investigated by measuring thresholds for a brief 4-kHz signal in the presence of a broadband-noise forward masker, a backward masker, and a combination of both. For the normally hearing subjects, combining two equally effective nonsimultaneous maskers resulted in up to a 15-dB greater increase in threshold than the 3 dB predicted by an energy-summation model ("excess masking"). However, the hearing-impaired subjects showed

The benefit of hearing aids: influence of hearing loss and age.

The relation between accessible benefit and hearing loss in combination with age of the patient is analysed. The degree of hearing loss and improvement derived by hearing aid use as found in this work is based on the individually determined speech reception threshold (SRT) for the condition with and without hearing aid in a noiseless environment. It was found that a significant correlation exists between hearing loss and SRT gain by the hearing aid (difference between unaided and aided speech reception threshold) for a pure-tone hearing loss of less than 40 dB at 500 Hz, irrespective of age, w

[New options for rehabilitation of conductive hearing loss : Tests on normal-hearing subjects with simulated hearing loss].

BACKGROUND: Bone conduction hearing aids can be worn as noninvasive devices using a clip or soft band that exerts pressure on the skin, or they can be surgically implanted. ADHEAR (MED-EL GmbH, Innsbruck, Austria) is a novel noninvasive bone conduction hearing aid that is attached behind the ear using an adhesive adapter and does not exert pressure on the skin. ADHEAR is indicated for patients with conductive hearing loss and normal inner ear function. The aim of this study was to evaluate the achievable hearing improvement with ADHEAR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve subjects with normal heari

Hearing Outcomes After Stereotactic Radiosurgery for Vestibular Schwannomas : Mechanism of Hearing Loss and How to Preserve Hearing.

The use of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) expanded to include the treatment of vestibular schwannomas (VSs) in 1969; since then, efforts to increase tumour control and to reduce cranial neuropathy have continued. Using the currently recommended marginal dose of 12-13 Gy, long-term reported outcomes after SRS include not only excellent tumour control rates of 92-100 % but also outstanding functional preservation of the trigeminal and facial nerves, with values of 92-100 % and 94-100 %, respectively. Nonetheless, hearing preservation remains in the range of 32-81 %. Previous studies have sugges

Early hearing improvement predicts complete recovery in sudden hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: Early prediction of recovery in sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) remains challenging. Early hearing improvement (EHI) may serve as a simple prognostic marker, but its quantitative relationship with complete recovery (CR) has not been well defined. We investigated the association between EHI and CR and explored whether this relationship differed according to pretreatment hearing severity. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case-control study of adults hospitalized for a first episode of unilateral SSNHL at a tertiary referral center in Taiwan between 2012 and 2022. Pati

Hearing Loss, Incident Parkinson Disease, and Treatment With Hearing Aids.

IMPORTANCE: The risk of developing Parkinson disease (PD) after objective hearing loss is unknown. PD studies using self-reported hearing loss are insensitive, and objective data are lacking. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of hearing loss with incident PD in US veterans and its effect modification by well-established prodromal conditions and hearing aids. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study analyzed electronic health record data from the US Department of Veterans Affairs for veterans who had an audiogram from January 1, 1999, to December 30, 2022. Individuals with dat
