[Prescribing hearing aids in ENT practice. I. General principles of prescription and hearing aid technics].

If it is no longer possible to improve hearing by conservative or surgical measures, provision of a hearing aid to the deaf patient remains an important task for the Otorhinolaryngologist. 98% of hearing aids are prescribed at the expense of the Statutory Health Insurance, 90-95% of them by Otorhinolaryngologists in private practice. The limits of the indication for the provision of hearing aids are explained, with attention to the principles of cash limits or by the Social Security system. The contractually regulated division of responsibility between the Otorhinolaryngologist and the hearing

[Auditory localisation in hearing impaired schoolchildren with and without hearing aids].

OBJECTIVE: Auditory localisation is part of central auditory processing. The study examined the impact of hearing aids on the auditory localisation ability of non-linguistic stimuli in hearing impaired schoolchildren. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Above threshold acoustic signals were presented to 20 children (7-17 years) in a free field condition with 45 loudspeakers placed on a semicircular array. All participants had a bilaterally symmetric moderate sensorineural hearing loss (WHO grade 2) and used behind the ear style (BTE) hearing aids with conventional earmolds. The children had to indicate the

Bone Anchored Hearing Aids for the Treatment of Asymmetric Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVES: Asymmetric hearing loss is generally defined as a moderate-to-profound hearing loss in the poorer ear and a mild-to-moderate hearing loss in the better ear. Application of a bone conduction hearing aid is one of the possible treatments for the poorer ear in asymmetric hearing loss. However, the device essentially stimulates the contralateral better ear, precluding true binaural hearing. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the application and utility of bone-anchored hearing aids in the treatment of asymmetric hearing loss. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 215 i

Bilateral versus unilateral hearing aids for bilateral hearing impairment in adults.

BACKGROUND: Acquired hearing loss is common and its incidence increases markedly with age. In most people, 'age-related' hearing loss is sensorineural (due to the loss of cochlear hair cells) and bilateral, affecting both ears to the same degree. Hearing loss categorised as mild, moderate or severe is primarily managed with hearing aids. People with bilateral hearing loss may be offered one aid, fitted to one specific ear, or two aids fitted to both ears. There is uncertainty about the relative benefits to people with hearing loss of these different strategies. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effec

Factors influencing degree of hearing loss at presentation, hearing aid choice, and usage in first time hearing aid users in Singapore.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the factors associated with late presentation at first hearing aid (HA) fitting, HA choice and usage among users in Singapore. DESIGN: Retrospective cross-sectional study. STUDY SAMPLE: 1068 subjects issued with HAs at a tertiary hospital from 2001 to 2013. RESULTS: Half of the subjects presented with more severe (>55 dB) hearing loss (HL) in their better ear. In multivariable analysis, older age, Malay ethnicity, conductive and mixed HL, and combination type of HL were associated with more severe HL at first presentation. Over 70% of subjects were older than 65 years.

Hearing more to hear less: a scoping review of hearing aids for tinnitus relief.

OBJECTIVE: As tinnitus is often associated with hearing loss, hearing aids have been proposed for tinnitus relief in literature for more than 70 years. There is a need for recent literature to be reviewed and guide decision making in tinnitus management. This scoping review aims to provide an update of the available evidence on hearing aids for tinnitus, focussing on the effect of sound amplification or combination devices (i.e. amplification and sound generation within one device). DESIGN: Research studies were included if they investigated hearing aids or combination devices for tinnitus an

A Position Statement on the Treatment of Hearing Impairment, Focused on Hearing Aids, From the Korean Otological Society Hearing Aid Study Group.

Hearing impairment not only diminishes sound perception but also leads to various secondary disabilities; therefore, proper management is crucial for individual well-being and socioeconomic savings. This study establishes an expert consensus on the treatment of hearing impairment, primarily concentrating on hearing aids (HAs), to assist physicians. A modified nominal group technique was used to collect expert opinions about the management of hearing impairment with HAs. The expert panel consisted of 13 otologists from the Korean Otological Society Hearing Aid Study Group. The panel formulated

Critical issues in bone anchored hearing aids.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the audiological performance and user satisfaction of bone-anchored hearing aids (BAHA). It addresses four key aspects: comparison with conventional hearing aids, differences between percutaneous and transcutaneous devices, benefits in unilateral hearing loss, and the patient adaptation process. METHODS: Between January 2023 and June 2024, 40 patients with conductive and mixed hearing loss received BAHA implants. Audiological evaluations included pure-tone and free-field audiometry, the Italian Matrix Sentence Test, and satisfaction questionnaires. RESULTS: B

[An update on bone anchored hearing aids].

Hearing loss represents a hidden handicapwith various repercussions on development and social life. In the majority of cases, classical hearing aids address most hearing losses. However, the enhancement required for severe deafness frequently involves sound distortions which are very uncomfortable for patients. With the advent of bone anchored hearing aids, conductive hearing losses as well as mixed hearing losses are now better rehabilitated. Recently their indications have been expanded to profound to severe sensorineural hearing loss. The emergence of new materials as well as subcutaneous i

Fitting hearing aids to first-time users.

Clinical experience indicates that first-time hearing aid users prefer less gain and lower maximum output levels than experienced users. This hypothesis was tested on 20 subjects being fitted with their first aids. The study was double blinded by using a programmable hearing aid, set to either the standard setting according to the manufacturer's software or to reduced gain and maximum output. Half of the subjects started with one hearing aid and half with the other, changing to the other hearing aid after 3 days trial with each setting. At the end of the study, subjects stated preference in sp

[Bone conduction hearing aids with fluid medium].

In patients with chronic otorrhoea or middle ear pathology, traditional hearing aids which depend on air conduction are of little use. In these situations a bone conduction hearing aid is preferable. Such devices by-pass the middle ear cleft and ossicular chain by conducting sound waves through bone to the cochlea. To date, bone conduction hearing aids have transmitted sound via a vibrating transducer applied either to skin (transcutaneous) or to bone (percutaneous). Unfortunately, these hearing aids possess a number of disadvantages, which include: cost, aesthetic appeal, a general anaestheti

Use and non-use of hearing aids.

A hundred and fifty hearing-handicapped were interviewed at home two years after their hearing aids had been fitted. The aim was to find out how many of the delivered aids were in use, and if not, why. A remarkable percentage of the hearing aids were very seldom, if ever, in use (23%), 57% of them were used regularly every day and 19% of the hearing-handicapped used their aids occasionally. The hearing aids were less used if the hearing loss was mild or sensorineural. Behind-the-ear aids were used more regularly than the body-worn aids. The time needed for learning to handle the aid did not af

Direct bone anchorage of external hearing aids.

Some patients with hearing disorders cannot wear a conventional hearing aid but have to use bone conduction in which the aid has to be attached with steel springs over the head. A new method of reconstruction involving the insertion of bone-anchored screws has been tested in a clinical survey of 14 patients. A titanium implant was anchored in the temporal bone and, in a later session, connected to a skin penetrating abutment. An external hearing aid was snapped on to the abutment. The patients have now been followed up for 53 months. There have been no problems with the bone anchorage or with

Hearing Aid Usage and Reported Hearing Difficulty in Americans With Subclinical Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVE: Subclinical hearing loss (SCHL) (previously defined by our group as a four-frequency pure tone average [PTA4] >0 to ≤25 dB) has recently been associated with depressive symptoms and cognitive decline. This suggests that the common 25 dB adult cutpoint in the United States for normal hearing may not be sensitive enough. We aim to characterize real-world hearing difficulties, as measured by hearing aid use and self-reported hearing difficulty, among individuals with SCHL. STUDY DESIGN: Analysis of biennial cross-sectional epidemiologic survey (National Health and Nutrition Examinatio

Deaf futurity: designing and innovating hearing aids.

One of the tenets of a posthuman vision is the eradication of disability through technology. Within this site of 'no future', as Alison Kafer describes, the disabled body is merged with artificial intelligence technology or transformed into a prosthetic superhuman. These imaginative possibilities are materialised in a future-oriented mindset in contemporary technological innovation, including hearing aids and other devices-such as vibrating vests to 'feel sounds' or sign language gloves, what design critic Liz Jackson defines as 'disability dongles'-designed to bypass deafness that simultaneou

Cartilage Conduction Hearing Aids in Clinical Practice.

A relatively loud sound is audible when a vibrator is attached to the aural cartilage. This form of conduction is referred to as cartilage conduction (CC). In Japan, a new type of hearing aid has been developed using CC and has been available in clinical practice since 2017. A clinical study conducted prior to its launch demonstrated its benefits, particularly in patients with aural atresia who were unable to use air conduction hearing aids. Several studies have been published on the benefits of CC hearing aids since their introduction into clinical practice. Most of the patients included in t

Auditory Distraction and Acclimatization to Hearing Aids.

OBJECTIVE: It is widely recognized by hearing aid users and audiologists that a period of auditory acclimatization and adjustment is needed for new users to become accustomed to their devices. The aim of the present study was to test the idea that auditory acclimatization and adjustment to hearing aids involves a process of learning to "tune out" newly audible but undesirable sounds, which are described by new hearing aid users as annoying and distracting. It was hypothesized that (1) speech recognition thresholds in noise would improve over time for new hearing aid users, (2) distractibility
