Here we report a case of pneumococcal meningitis with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss at the onset. The patient was a 60-year-old man who a few days before visiting our hospital experienced common cold-like symptoms, and then he suddenly developed bilateral hearing loss. Examination of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) on the day of admission revealed pleocytosis and his CSF culture demonstrated pneumococci. Otorhinolaryngological examinations disclosed bilateral severe sensorineural hearing loss due to cochlear impairment. Many cases of bacterial meningitis concomitant with hearing loss have

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to characterize lateralization of sounds and localization of sounds in children with bilateral conductive hearing loss (BCHL) when listening with either one or two percutaneous bone conduction devices (BCDs).
DESIGN: Sound lateralization was measured with the minimum audible angle test in which children were asked to indicate from which of the two visible speakers the sound originated. Sound localization was measured with a test in which stimuli were presented from speakers that were not visible to the children. In the sound localization test, 150 ms broadband nois

BACKGROUND: Bilateral sudden hearing loss (BSHL) is a rare otologic emergency, representing 1-2% of all sudden hearing loss cases. Autoimmune processes are considered one of the key contributors to BSHL, with immune responses targeting inner ear structures. The aim of our study is to identify the role of autoimmune and inflammatory markers in patients with BSHL and assess their prognostic significance.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed 30 BSHL patients out of 420 sudden hearing loss cases. Data including audiometric results, medical histories, autoimmune and inflammator

Autoimmune inner ear disease (AIED) is an uncommon cause of fluctuating sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), which is diagnosed by exclusion and required a high index of suspicion. Secondary AIED, which accompanies other autoimmune diseases, occurs in up to 30% of AIED cases. Secondary AIED is a rare manifestation of paraneoplastic syndrome, and the causal malignancy may be occult initially. Detecting and treating associated diseases, along with the use of immunosuppressants, are the mainstay for the management of AIED. Herein, we presented a woman with bilateral fluctuating and progressive SNHL

Early identification, treatment, and medical evaluation of childhood hearing loss are essential to promoting language and social development, regardless of their age of presentation. Evaluation of hearing loss in children should prioritize reversible and treatable causes. Multiple algorithms have been established to address the changing prevalence of genetic or infectious contributions to hearing loss and include recommendations on laboratory testing, imaging, and genetic testing. Despite these recommendations, significant practice variation remains on assessing the etiology of hearing loss in

A retrospective review of children with confirmed hearing loss identified through universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) in Virginia from 2010 to 2014 was conducted in order to compare the incidence of Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (JCIH) risk factors in children with unilateral hearing loss (UHL) to bilateral hearing loss (BHL). Over the 5-year study period, 1004 children (0.20% of all births) developed a confirmed hearing loss, with 544 (51%) children having at least one JCIH risk factor. Overall, 18% of children with confirmed hearing loss initially passed UNHS. Of all children with

Children with permanent unilateral or mild bilateral hearing loss have been a focus of concern by audiologists, educators, and physicians for at least 2 decades. These children are known to be at risk for psychoeducational difficulties. However, despite this concern, little has been learned about the causative factors of these hearing losses and how those factors might be contributing to child development. This review of known causes of permanent unilateral and mild bilateral hearing loss in children is meant to draw attention to the importance of the search for etiologic factors. That is, the

Williams syndrome (WS) is a rather rare congenital disorder characterised by a series of cardiovascular, maxillo-facial and skeletal abnormalities. It sometimes displays otorhinolaryngological symptoms because of the relatively high incidence of secretory otitis media and hyperacusis, which may be present in up to 95% of patients. The present paper describes a case of WS associated with bilateral conductive hearing loss which was not related to secretory otitis media. Hyperacusis was, moreover, present in spite of the conductive deafness. Surgical or prosthetic treatment of hearing loss was de

PURPOSE: Childhood hearing loss (CHL) in need of assisting listening devices require a constant surveillance for hearing loss (HL) progression and adjustment of interventions. Despite advances in aetiological investigations, there are still important gaps in understanding causal determinants and progression patterns of CHL. The aim of this study was to analyze the prevalence and yield of aetiological investigations, and to identify causes associated with HL progression in older children.
METHODS: This descriptive retrospective study included data from 194 children with moderate-profound senor

BACKGROUND: Atorvastatin is widely prescribed for hyperlipidemia and is generally well tolerated. Auditory adverse effects are rarely reported, and statin-associated sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) remains poorly characterized.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old Ethiopian woman developed bilateral tinnitus followed by progressive, symmetric bilateral SNHL 3 weeks after starting atorvastatin 40 mg daily. She had no other ototoxic risk factors. Pure-tone audiometry confirmed bilateral moderate SNHL. Given the temporal association and exclusion of alternatives, atorvastatin was discontinued. One

Ototoxic side effects such as sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus can be caused by acute salicylate intoxication. Bilateral symmetric sensori- neural hearing loss involving all tested frequencies is a typical pattern of hearing loss in acute salicylate intoxication, which usually resolves within 2 or 3 days without any specific treatment for ototoxicity. Herein, we report a case of suicidal aspirin intoxication resulting in sudden bilateral hearing loss and vertigo. The patient exhibited spontaneous downbeat nystagmus, and the mechanism underlying this characteristic nystagmus is discussed

BACKGROUND: Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD) is a prion disease characterized as a fatal transmissible neurodegenerative disorder. Dizziness is often the first presenting symptom of sCJD, but hearing loss as an early manifestation is very rare.
CASE SUMMARY: A 76-year-old man presented with bilateral sudden hearing impairment and dizziness for 10 d. He was taking medications for hypertension and diabetes. He denied any difficulty with activities of daily living or hearing impairment before the onset of symptoms. Pure tone audiometry showed bilateral severe hearing impairment. Brain m

INTRODUCTION: Sweet syndrome (SS) is an idiopathic autoimmune disease which has been associated with various extracutaneous manifestations. Otologic symptoms secondary to SS are characterized by bilateral, progressive, sensorineural hearing loss, which requires auditory rehabilitation with, for example, cochlear implantation.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 43-year-old woman complaining of bilateral sudden hearing loss visited the Emergency Department of our University. Abrupt onset of fever peaking up to 40°C and vomiting accompanied the hearing loss and other associated symptoms were: tinnitus that sou

Langerhans cell histiocytosis is a rare disorder, with resultant bilateral sensorineural hearing loss unreported in adults. A 42-year-old man presented with 4 months of right-sided tinnitus and hearing loss treated initially as otitis media with effusion. He re-presented 5 months later with progressive bilateral hearing loss--sensorineural (>100 dB) on pure tone audiogram. CT showed bilateral petrous temporal bone and calvarial lesions. Biopsy confirmed diagnosis of Langerhans cell histiocytosis and chemotherapy was started. Though uncommon, Langerhans cell histiocytosis should be considered a

We report a case of sudden bilateral hearing loss associated with an occlusion of the right vertebral artery. A 66-year-old man was admitted to hospital suffering from sudden onset vertigo, deafness, and vomiting. He could not walk due to truncal ataxia. There was positional nystagmus to the right; spontaneous and gaze-evoked nystagmus were absent. He had no facial nerve palsy, dysarthria, pyramidal tract signs, limb ataxia, and sensory impairment. Pure tone audiometry demonstrated a profound sensorineural deafness of both ears. A tentative diagnosis of sudden deafness was made. He was treated

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical characteristics of simultaneous bilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss (Si-BSSNHL) as well as its prognostic factors.
METHODS: Patients with Si-BSSNHL who were admitted to the Department of Otology Medicine between December 2018 and December 2021 were enrolled in the case group. Propensity score matching (PSM) for sex and age was used to select the control group, which included people who had unilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss (USSNHL) during the same time period. Hearing recovery, audiological examinations, vestibular function assessments, l

Bilateral Sensorineural Hearing Loss is a rare disease that is often associated with other complex medical conditions. Primary central nervous system lymphoma is an uncommon and aggressive variant of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that can mimic many other neurological diseases. Herein, we present a rare case of lymphoma of the CNS as the etiology for progressive SSNHL. We describe a 58-year-old male with previous IgG4-disease presentation who was diagnosed with progressive sensorineural hearing loss. The condition evolved rapidly despite proper, conventional therapy. The patient acquired vestibular sym
